Ciaran McAuley - Tears [Digital Society Recordings]

Alex Wright Review: Northern Irish producer Ciaran McAuley has been delivering many great tracks all containing his signature melodic sound which is full of emotion and human feeling. 'Tears' is no different, playing on happy major themes with soft, metallic rolling basslines and acids. The filtered vocal chops are a nice unique touch as well as the mini-break and build up which arrives shortly after mixing the tune in. The trademark Ciaran McAuley strings are in the mix too with warm, unusual female vocal refrains to enhance the soundscape. The main pluck melody reminds me a bit of The Thrillseekers' 'Amber' but plays a less-haunting, more feel-good kind of sequence here and the climax section is full of power and finesse, making this a great all-rounder. Overall Mark: 9/10

Gerome - Exalted [Always Alive Recordings]

Alex Wright Review: Lebanese producer Gerome has made some beautiful trance over the last 12 months, this being of no exception with happy, feel-good melodies. Some nice filler FX and acid sweeps set the tone for a building, uplifting piece which rises through light clouds of soft pads and sensitive plucks which give way to the heavenly, euphoric chord progression alongside a positive, inspiring piano ostinato. The fifth chord in the progression hits the sweet spot for me with its gorgeous seventh added on top which is played by a gorgeous warm pad sound before the epic, climbing pluck melody rises out of the sound bed. The buildup and payoff is hands in the air and jumping around for sure and hits the right nerves to give that perfect shot of endorphins. Overall Mark: 9/10

Matt Eray & Nicolas Menicou - Dolphin [Beyond Belief Recordings]

Alex Wright Review: Polish producer Matt Eray teams up with Nicolas Menicou for another Beyond Belief Recordings release which oozes that classic, pure, uplifting sound that many of us love. Featuring nostalgic corded plucks, twinkling piano hits, and a nice clean guitar part, the vibe is kept very aquatic and suits its title well. The main theme is nice and variant with a great tone along with a cheeky vocal blur (which sounds very similar to Richard Bedford from the Above & Beyond track 'Thing Called Love'), making for a groovy and immersive track! Overall Mark: 8/10

Additional info:

Omniks - Looking For You [Silent Shore Records]

Alex Wright Review: Belarussian talent Omniks kicks off 2017 at ReOrder's Silent Shore Recordings with this strong, pacey trancer which features tightly mixed percussion, pulsing offbeat bass, and frantic, darting acids and leads which are enhanced during the breakdown when a catchy piano theme gives way to the full, majestic, arpeggiated sequence. Some great airy pads add much needed depth to the track's atmosphere and along with some suspensful, dramatic fills and FX which help carry things along into the soaring climax and outro section. Overall Mark: 7/10

Additional info:

Stella Project - Mysterious Euphoria (Mark Eworth Remix) [Mysterious Station]

Alex Wright Review: This rather low profile label occasionally churns out a nice track or two, usually by this act known as 'Stellar Project'. This time Mark Eworth's no-nonsense remix of 'Mysterious Euphoria' features tough, rolling drums and bass which are intertwined by growling acids, floaty yet authoritative FX, and hectic arpeggiated  lead sounds. The main melody is great and memorable with plenty of atmosphere and a nice breakbeat section too, adding suspense for the big build which ends in a stabby, industrial, tech drop which works brilliantly! Overall Mark: 7/10

Interview by Alex Wright!
With releases on Andy Moor's AVA Recordings, Jordan Suckley's Damaged Records, Monster Force, Redux Recordings, Levitated Music (Abora), Discover, Critical State and many more, DJ T.H. has put a nice footprint of his own into the trance scene in the last few years. With remixes by Alex Wright, Nolita, and Alex Bryka, his single with vocalist Alisha Nauth 'Lost In Me' is out on FloE's Entrancing Music label on Monday 30th January 2017. We caught up with Thomas ahead of the release to talk a bit about what got him into DJing and his experiences so far.

Interview was written and conducted by Alex Wright, Electronic Music Producer & 1Mix Radio host.

Alex: Hey Thomas, thanks for speaking to us at FluxBPM Online! How have you been recently and what have you been up to?

Thomas: Hey Alex, thanks for this interview. It's going well here. I've been working on lots of new stuff actually, more information will be coming soon. It was nice to have you remix 'Lost In Me', your remix works so well.

Alex: How long have you been DJing and what were the early days of learning and playing like for you?

Thomas: I've been DJing for years now, DJing and producing professionally since 2009/2010. The early days of DJing were interesting experiences for me and the early days of producing were really hard. There is so much to learn to be able to produce good music.

Alex: Where was your first gig?

Thomas: My first gig was at an official event called 'Save Our Souls' in Cologne.

Alex: What has been your favourite gig to date?

Thomas: It's hard to say, I've played at many great events. My favorites were the We Love Trance events in Hamburg 2016 and 2015.; the Legendary Event in Wuppertal in 2014 with Solarstone; and Essen Original in 2013 with more than 2,000 people.

Alex: You've released many great tracks over the last few years. Which one was the most important release for you in terms of progressing your career and how was it?

Thomas: My best releases until now are my collab with Cyre 'Salida Del Sol' which won the A State Of Trance Future Favourite;

my collab with Rene Ablaze and Ian Buff which was the "10 Years Anthem" for Redux Recordings;

and of course 'New Day' with Denis Sender and Hanna Finsen which was included on 'A State Of Trance Year Mix 2015' by Armin van Buuren!

My greatest solo tunes were 'Dancing In Chinatown' in 2013, 'Haunting' in 2015, 'Nocturnal Creature' in 2016, and of course 'Lost In Me' with Alisha in 2017!

Alex: Do we expect any new releases or gigs to come later this year from you that you can tell us about?

Thomas: My next releases are my tunes 'Where We Belong' with Natalia Meister on Pure Energy Records, 'Be My Hero' with Robin Vane on Fenology Records, a collab with female DJ Miss Cortex on Redux Recordings, and a great upcoming vocal collab with FloE and Kate Miles on Entrancing Music. Even more are in the making actually! I may also announce that I play in summer 2017 at one of the biggest German festivals, more information will be coming soon!

Alex: Awesome! Thanks for taking the time out to talk to us Thomas, it's great to hear from you and I wish you the best of luck for the future. Remember, anybody wanting to buy a copy of any 'Lost In Me' can do so when it comes out on Monday 30th January, if you haven't heard them yet make sure to take a listen to all the mixes included in this interview!

Event Review by Alex Wright
On my journey down from Nottingham to London via the train, I was very excited to be attending Trance Sanctuary once again after last year's event which truly impressed me. Despite seeing many of the DJs play already at Luminosity Beach Festival this year, I knew the special atmosphere at Egg would provide an entirely unique clubbing experience, and to see Giuseppe Ottaviani play with his live set up for the first time was another thing which intrigued me.

When entering The Garden area this time, as usual the layout had changed yet again to make this room the main focus of the event, with Mark Landragin, Menno de Jong, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Bryan Kearney, and Will Atkinson playing their sets here. I arrived on time at just after 3PM and managed to get a good chat with event team member James Rae about many things related to production and the scene in general, the floor filled up nicely over the first few hours as it was warmed up by tempting, slower progressive before building up to more main room sounds. Giuseppe Ottaviani was already seen checking out the DJ booth at this time, which was a surprise as he was due to play at around 6:30 but it was cool to see how keen he was to ensure his live setup would work properly.

Mark Landragin
At around 4:30, Mark Landragin took control of the decks and played some top-notch, groovy trance 2.0 sounds from labels like Anjunabeats, providing plenty of hands in the air moments and euphoria to gear us up for what was to come later that night. The highlights from him set were Josep's goosebump-inducing 'Love Spreadin'' (who was of course Will Atkinson who was to be performing later on), Jason Ross - Valor, and Kyau & Albert's euphoric 'Memory Lane'.

Menno de Jong
Once Mark's set was finished, Menno de Jong starting pumping out heavy psy and dark, melodic uplifting which had great hooks and energy. I really enjoyed this set as I always do with Menno's as his selection is full of class and fresh, high quality trance.

Giuseppe Ottaviani
At the end of Menno's set, I saw Giuseppe Ottaviani setting up from the front row and found it interesting to see what his setup consisted of. It was nice to hear parts of other tracks automated on top of others to switch things up to make the set more lively and unique, however the track selection wasn't my most favourite of the night to be honest.

Bryan  Kearny
Bryan Kearney took over after Giuseppe and played a mostly melodic set which had some nice vocal highlights including when I heard the acapella of DJ Shah Feat. Andrina Thorpe - Who Will Find Me? which I absolutely adore, however I was in more of a dirty, techno-ish mood myself so I was really looking forward to Will Atkinson's set who was up next.

Will Atkinson
Straight away when Will took charge of the decks, the rhythms were more infectious and free just the way I like them on a dancefloor, and I was particularly taken over by the later stages of his set where a couple of tribalish tunes were dropped including Paul Webster's banging take on Oliver - You're Not Alone which I hadn't previously heard before and worked brilliantly in the club. 'Numb The Pain' was also a big highlight which for me is one of the best produced and arranged uplifters around from recent years.

This set was a brilliant way to end the night, however after trying to speak to Will Atkinson and other DJs in the VIP area and being turned away by the club manager and due to tickets being sold out my friends and I couldn't get in to the afterparty, so we got a taxi home early from what was another great, unique afternoon at one of the most well-presented trance events in the country.

Daniel Kandi & Miroslav Vrlik - You & Me [Always Alive Recordings]

Alex Wright Review: I heard about this one coming earlier this year and it was exciting to say the least as I am such a fan of both of these artist's styles. The two producers seem to have stricken a nice balance between their individual sounds and production techniques as Daniel's lead work, FX transitions, and mastering are audible as well as Miroslav's floaty but punchy drive and melodic style. The introduction is just perfect  for autumn days and so is the breakdown which features a lovely plucky sound which decays away like falling leaves. I always appreciate when songs are unique and this breakdown paints a lovely soundscape with great sounds and when the melody hits with the basslines, the result is very uplifting and hands in the air. Just how I like my trance!

Finding Wonderland & Skylex - Wonder Sky [Blue Soho Recordings]

Alex Wright Review: I was recently brought to attention by Skylex's amazing remix of Thrillseekers Pres. Hydra - Amber and here partnering up with 'Finding Wonderland' on Blue Soho Recordings, he shows his maturity and skill at crafting excellent, clean mixdown with buzzy basslines and nice chops which set the perfect mood along with textured plucks and subtle ambient pads. The chord progression is very nice and refreshing with plenty of uplifting moments and some sky-high piano touches send this one into heaven. Some vocal atmospheres enhance the mood before the sound level drops giving way to an impacting lead melody which when coupled with the punchy beats and atmospheres in the climax creates a very satisfying payoff.

Additional info:

Levekar Feat. Cassandra Grey - Darkest Light (Den Rize Pres. Blur8 Remix) [Emergent Skies]

Alex Wright Review: Originally being really impressed by the original mix of this which was released back in August and featured on Dan Stone's disc from Aly & Fila's FSOE450 compilation, I was excited to see Den Rize's name on the remix package as I am a big fan of his Blur8 work. In this remix there is plenty of delicious atmospherics and great vocal treatment, with punchy beats and a driving yet laid back groove aided by a sliding saw bassline. The breakdown takes a deeper, more minimal approach which is full of misty moodiness and some nicely phased plucks create a gorgeously tantalising effect on the ears. A great alternative to the more anthemic original by Den Rize here which is my favourite out of the remix release which also includes remixes by Aldo Henrycho and Selective Divergence.

Mike Squillo - Beleza [Digital Society Recordings]

Alex Wright Review: My buddy from New York has his first release in a while on DSR with 'Beleza' which features a lovely bittersweet guitar melody at its core and is dressed by a dramatic bed of pluck sequences and scene-setting pads. Trance with a balearic flavour definitely hits my soft spot and this track by Mike has captured that mood really well. The chords and melodies in the breakdown remind me of the beautiful yet sad 'One Last Look' by Signalrunners from Anjunabeats, and if you don't know that track I really suggest you give it a listen! The lead is a nice arpeggiated saw which fills the track out nicely underneath the gentle guitar parts with  plenty of power and prowess. Great work here from this dude!

R3dub - Covenant [Maraphobia]

Alex Wright Review: A really well-fleshed out production here by Romanian producer R3dub on Maratone's label Maraphobia, 'Covenant' has plenty of power and depth with a nice wide stereo field, some nice acids squelch away in the mids and high end to provide extra flair and drive to a thumping groove. The main lead melody is straight forward and powerful and is complemented nicely by twinkling pianos and great atmospheres. Good job here by William at creating a well-executed, memorable track with plenty of bite.

Interview by Alex Wright
Showing plenty of promise in the last 12 months by releasing well-written, emotive songs such as 'Black Bird', 'Into the Unknown', and 'Darkest Light' alongside producers Gerome and Levekar is Cassandra Grey from Lebanon. I had a brief online chat with her to find out more about her inspiration and previous experience as a singer / vocalist.

Interview was written and conducted by Alex Wright, Electronic Music Producer & 1Mix Radio host.

Alex: Hey Cassandra, thanks for speaking to us at 1mix radio & FluxBPM Online! How have you been recently and what have you been up to?

Cassandra: Hello Alex! I’ve recently been swinging between my studies, my music debut, and my dancing hobby. Last summer I passed my entrance examination at the faculty of medicine at the Lebanese university and I am now a second year student. While focusing on my studies, I was rehearsing with my friends for the Latin dance competition in Lebanon which we won 1st place in two divisions. At the end of this month we are heading to Milano and for the first time, we, as crew, are going to perform a fusion dance representing Lebanese talent in one of the most important international festivals! Last but not least, I have been a vocalist member of the amazing Emergent Skies label family for the past year and I am currently working on various collaborations with my “partner in crime” Gerome and other talented producers such as Levekar & Derek Palmer. Some tracks are work in progress and others are yet to be announced.

Alex: How long have you been singing and what were your earliest inspirations to make you want to become a vocalist?

Cassandra Grey
Cassandra: Well, my answer may seem a little bit surprising but I am merely an amateur singer who happened to have a nice voice and an unexpected opportunity. I never really considered myself a professional singer neither a trance vocalist! I actually remember the first time I realised that I could sing was when I was home, trying to reach Adele’s beautiful high notes in “Rolling in the deep”. I haven’t taken any classes or received any vocal training before but I haven’t stopped singing since. I simply love it!  At first, I was mostly interested in pop, R&B, and Arabic music but when you have an older brother with an ear for trancy music and vocals, acquiring a taste for this exquisite genre is allegedly inevitable! I went from listening to tracks like 'In And Out Of Love', 'Rain (Cosmic Gate Remix)'”, Markus Schulz’s 'Nothing Without Me', to getting the entire Armin van Buuren album “Mirage” and Andrew Rayel’s amazing singles. I had been singing whenever and wherever I pleased but the idea of entering the music industry was the last of my expectations.  One night, out of nowhere, my brother calls me asking me to record a little something for Gerome, the black bird lyrics. Although disapproving at first, I eventually did it, and the outcome was far better than I presumed. As a matter of fact, this was my first step into the trance scene generally and the Emergent Skies (previously Elliptical Sun Energies) label particularly.

Alex: I love the lyrics to your song 'Black Bird', did you write these yourself and if so, do you always write lyrics yourself?

Cassandra: Thank you! Well Alex, for the first time I will reveal the secret behind my brilliantly-written lyrics: My brother Elias. As I already mentioned, I had no serious experience in singing or writing but he was so keen on helping me express myself that he was the one who encouraged me to become a vocalist in the first place. Without his and Gerome’s help I wouldn’t have been able to succeed in a domain I knew nothing about. So I solemnly thank them for all their hard work and I’m glad I've had the chance to mention this today.

Alex: Are you a big trance music fan? If so, who are your favourite artists within the Trance scene right now?

Cassandra Grey
Cassandra: I am not a big trance music fan who attends every concert, pre-orders every upcoming album, and listens to trance music 24/7.  I am a fan of every sound I like regardless of its genre because for me, music itself is pure inspiration. In fact, one of the reasons I am a trance vocalist is that the sound of my voice fits better in the dreamy side of trance music. Nevertheless, among all the artists within the trance scene my favorites are A.R.D.I, Cosmic Gate, Daniel Kandi, and of course Susana (her voice is out of this world)!

Alex: Have you got any new projects in the works and plans for the future relating to music?

Cassandra: Of course, I have many new projects in the works for this year, especially after my last collaboration with Danish producer Dennis Pedersen entitled “Painting Summer” which got the attention and interest of lots of producers and trance listeners out there. In addition, I plan on making some time for more singing lessons so I can really give the best of me to everyone who listens to my music.

Alex: Awesome! Thanks for taking the time out to talk to us Cassandra, it's great to hear from you and I wish you the best of luck with your future endeavors. Anybody wanting to buy a copy of any of Cassandra's tracks can do so on all stores now, if you haven't heard them yet make sure to take a listen to them within this interview!
