Dimitris: Can you tell us the story behind how “Dirty Bird” came to life?
Noah Levin: I experimented with some synthesisers and came across a sound that reminded me of a track by claude van stroke. He owns the label Dirty Bird and so this name initially functioned as a working title for this project. Our last joint production was called "Camel on Speed" and so we thought "Dirty Bird" would be a suitable successor.
Dimitris: What was it like collaborating on this track with your father?
Noah Levin: The cooperation with him has save the track. In the course of the production I was at some point where I didn’t get any further thematically. I had a good idea with a soundly stable basic framework but the more I tried to bring the project to a conclusion, the more I moved away from what the track made before. When hanging up together with Mike, I used a raw version of the track in the DJ mix and immediately aroused Mike’s attention. Originally he wanted to make a remix but in the end we decided to finish my raw version together.
Dimitris: How did your father influence your journey into electronic music and production?
Noah Levin: Mainly with his broadcast series „Auslaufen“ on Evosonic Radio. Anyone who knows the sound of this show knows that it is a journey through the history of electronic music. Bootlegs that don’t actually exist, unreleased tracks and remixes as well as songs that are exclusively available on vinyl. I initially attended this program as a pure consumer, until the sound grabbed me at some point that I wanted to get deeper into the matter.
Dimitris: How do you see “Dirty Bird” fitting into both club sets and home listening environments?
Noah Levin: In terms of sound, the song keeps up with the current club sound, but we did not produce it specifically for the club. It is a very varied song that rather tells a story instead of maintaining danceable loops. If you work towards the track in a club setting, it can certainly fill a sophisticated dance floor.
Dimitris: Looking ahead, do you plan to continue collaborating with your father, or focus more on solo projects?
Noah Levin: Both as well. Making music with Mike is incredibly enriching for me. Over 30 years of production experience that then sit next to me, are also not to be replaced by Ai or the Internet. In addition, I really appreciate that our shared passion brings us together. Despite all this, there will probably be more solo projects of mine than co-productions in the future.
Dimitris: From your perspective as a father and mentor, what was the most rewarding part of creating “Dirty Bird” with Noah?
Chris Maico Schmidt: Actually, "Dirty Bird" was the production where our collaboration was least synchronous. Noah approached me with this brilliant song idea, saying he was stuck and something was missing. Together, we found that missing ingredient, and just like that, the track was finished – a production that bears 80% of Noah's signature.
Dimitris: How did collaborating with your son differ from your usual creative process with other artists?
Chris Maico Schmidt: This was by no means our first collaboration; our musical journey began as early as 2023 or even before. Up until the middle of this year, we often sat side-by-side making music. Pretty early on, Noah began developing his own style. The most beautiful thing during this shared time was watching Noah grow into his own artistic confidence. As a father, you wish for your child to find something they're truly passionate about – that it turned out to be music, which has always fascinated me too, was incredibly fulfilling. As a mentor, it was a moment of pride, seeing how he not only absorbed knowledge but applied it in his own unique, creative way. Noah now has his own studio at home. You could say he has truly spread his wings.
With Noah, everything felt more intuitive and emotional. While with other artists you often have to start by aligning ideas, styles, and expectations, that wasn't necessary with Noah. He knows my way of working, my preferences, and he surprisingly quickly grew into this music. The dynamic was more playful and driven by curiosity, far removed from a professionally detached routine. It felt more like two explorers venturing into new territory together.
Dimitris: In what ways did Noah surprise you during the production of this track?
Chris Maico Schmidt: He surprised me with his pronounced sense of rhythm and his boundless willingness to experiment. Noah wasn't afraid to make bold suggestions – sounds I might never have thought of myself. Furthermore, he delved very quickly and deeply into the subject matter, partly because he wasn't afraid of English-language tutorials. The latter, by the way, is a real hurdle for me personally!
Dimitris: How do you balance guiding your son musically while allowing him to develop his own artistic voice?
Chris Maico Schmidt: Once we started, after just six months, I no longer had to make great efforts or perform huge adjustments. And as I mentioned, it was never really a classic "teacher-student" relationship. The Corona period even proved to be an advantage in our case. At some point, he sat next to me, watching me move "colored boxes" around on the screen. Soon after, we started DJing together more often, then he played alone, until he eventually got his own PC and started moving "colored boxes" himself (literally!), explained to me how the bass works, and now he releases independently on labels like "Audio Safari."
Here's what I tell anyone in a teaching/learning relationship: The most important thing is to let go at the right moment. And if the learner has their own ideas, even if they seem completely outlandish, you should let them pursue it, so they can gain their own experience. Our goal was never for him to become a copy of me, but for him to discover his own artistic self.
Dimitris: What does “Dirty Bird” represent to you personally, both as a producer and as a father?
Chris Maico Schmidt: The great thing about this track, and all the others we've created and will create, is simply the fact that I can produce electronic music together with my son. How many fathers can say that? Every track we make together will therefore never lose its significance in the future. Moreover, every track we have created and will create together is a shared milestone, a precious memory, and a strong sign that music can bridge generations. When I listen to the track, I feel pride, deep gratitude, and great anticipation for all that Noah still has ahead of him musically.

Andrea: Reflecting on these 20 years with BluFin Records feels like flipping through the pages of my own personal diary, each track marking a significant chapter. BluFin has been more than just a label; it's been the rhythm to my growth, both personally and professionally.
Personally, this music has been the backdrop to my evolution, resonating through moments of joy and challenges alike. Professionally, the lessons have been profound—understanding the intricacies of the music industry, navigating the complexities of human connections, and most importantly, discovering deeper layers of myself.
I often find myself reminiscing about one of our early tracks, "Swimming With Sharks." It’s symbolic, really—navigating the industry sometimes felt exactly like that. But each experience, each challenge, and each triumph has sculpted who I am today, both as a part of BluFin and as an individual.
Dimitris: What inspired you to create BluFin Records back in 2005, and how did that decision reflect where you were in your life at the time?
Andrea: The inspiration to create BluFin Records in 2005 was deeply personal and transformative. My late husband and I had owned a beloved record store in Cologne, Music Man, which wasn’t just a business; it was a vibrant hub for music lovers and a big part of our identity.
However, with the rise of MP3s, the entire music landscape shifted dramatically. We had to sell the store—not out of choice, but necessity driven by changing times. That pivotal moment pushed me to harness the connections and experiences I had gathered, leading to the birth of BluFin Records. It was both a continuation of our passion for music and a new chapter reflecting resilience and adaptation in my life.
Dimitris: How have your relationships with artists not only influenced the label’s growth but also your own personal development?
Andrea: The relationships with the artists are truly the cornerstone of everything. They’ve shaped not just the growth and identity of BluFin, but have deeply impacted my personal development as well.
I genuinely cherish most of them, both on a personal and artistic level. Each artist contributes uniquely to what BluFin represents today. Without their talent and collaboration, the label wouldn’t have evolved into its current form.
We often refer to it as the BluFin Family because that’s what it feels like—a close-knit, supportive community where everyone plays a vital role.

Andrea: There have truly been countless moments where an artist has touched me deeply, making it difficult to single out just one. Each encounter holds its own unique emotional resonance.

One of the most significant is the power of communication—sometimes things don’t go as planned, but there’s nothing that can’t be resolved through an open, honest conversation. This approach not only helps in overcoming challenges but also strengthens relationships. Over time, many of these artists have become friends, and through our collaborations, I’ve learned the importance of empathy, adaptability, and the beauty of different perspectives. When selecting the tracks, I often find inspiration from the posters in my office from past events—thinking, "This has to be in," or "This track holds a special place for me." The process is guided more by gut feeling than by market trends or analyses; it's about what feels right emotionally and personally.
Dimitris: Could you share a story behind a track or an artist on the compilation that deeply resonates with you personally?
Andrea: Back in 2005, we used to hand-deliver vinyl, hauling white label samples to the post office with a sack barrow. It was a tangible, hands-on process. Now, everything’s digital—swift, global, and changed. Yet, despite all this evolution, one thing holds true: some tracks linger in your mind, unforgettable, stirring something deep within you.
Dimitris: How have the challenges and successes of running BluFin Records shaped your resilience and emotional strength?
Andrea: Running BluFin Records has certainly been a journey filled with both challenges and successes. These experiences have taught me to stand my ground more firmly and confidently. Now, I feel that I can even extend my elbows if necessary, asserting myself when the situation demands it, both emotionally and professionally.

Dimitris: Are there specific artists or projects that have pushed you out of your comfort zone and helped you grow?
Andrea: Yes, definitely. There have been key tracks and projects that really challenged me and fostered my growth. For instance, Cat.No. 4 by Acquaviva & Lutzenkirchen stayed at No. 1 on Beatport for three months. It was a massive achievement, though it’s interesting that many people weren’t even familiar with Beatport at the time. Experiences like this have pushed me beyond my comfort zone and contributed significantly to my development.
Dimitris: How do you balance the emotional connections you’ve built with artists while making tough business decisions?
Andrea: Dimitris, that's a thoughtful question. To be honest, I haven’t always managed to keep business and emotional connections completely separate. There are times when they intertwine, and while that can be challenging, it also adds a layer of authenticity and humanity to the work. It’s this very blend that often makes the experiences meaningful and real.
Dimitris: Has there ever been a moment when an artist’s work moved you in an unexpected way, perhaps shifting your views on music or life?
Andrea: Yes, there was a moment that truly stands out. I once listened to a piece by an artist I had never paid much attention to before. The emotion woven into the melody and the raw vulnerability in the lyrics struck me profoundly. It wasn’t just about the music—it felt like the song was peeling back layers of my own experiences, making me reflect on aspects of life I had overlooked. It shifted my understanding of how deeply art can connect us to our own emotions and to others, transforming not just my view on music but also my perspective on personal growth and empathy.
Dimitris: What has been the most rewarding personal experience for you as the owner of BluFin Records?
Andrea: The most rewarding personal experience for me as the owner of BluFin Records? That's a tough one, but I’d say the showcases at the Winter Music Conference (WMC) in Miami really stand out. They were incredible moments where I got to see our artists shine and connect with a passionate audience. It was truly fulfilling to witness the energy and enthusiasm surrounding our music in such an iconic setting.
Dimitris: If you could give advice to your younger self, just starting BluFin Records, based on everything you’ve learned, what would it be?
Andrea: The world has changed dramatically over the years, and the music industry has evolved in ways I could never have anticipated. If I could give advice to my younger self starting BluFin Records, I would say: stay true to your vision but remain adaptable. Embrace change as an opportunity for growth rather than a challenge. Build strong relationships, not just for business, but for mutual support and inspiration. Always keep learning and be open to new ideas, technologies, and sounds. Trust your instincts, but don't be afraid to seek advice when needed. Ultimately, enjoy the journey, because every experience, good or bad, shapes who you become.

Andrea: I'd like to thank Mike and Evosonic again for the opportunity to do the show. From the beginning, we thought it was better to support each other than be selfish. I've always thought that.

Mike : Honestly, it’s the fact that we’re still doing radio the same way we did back in 1997—about 90% of the time. EVOSONIC has never followed the traditional radio playbook. We don’t stick to rigid formats. Instead, we give our music editors and DJs the freedom to shape their shows. That’s how we bring the freshest club sounds straight into our listeners’ living rooms, 24/7. Our programming covers all sorts of styles within electronic music.
Dimitris: How has electronic music’s evolution influenced Evosonic Radio’s programming and direction over the years?
Mike : Honestly? It hasn’t. We’ve always been about the underground. We play what’s hot now, just like we did back then. And we’re just as passionate about the sounds of yesterday as we are about what’s coming next.
Dimitris: The anniversary event features a diverse lineup of artists. How did you put together this special list?
Mike : It’s pretty simple—our lineup is made up of our radio hosts and artists and collectives we’re friends with. If people find it special, then we’ve done something right.
Dimitris: How have you managed to keep Evosonic Radio’s original identity intact while expanding globally and reaching new audiences?
Mike : It’s all about staying true to who we are while being open to reinvention. We’re curious about new ideas, but we don’t jump on every trend. We form our own opinions, but we also listen to others. Respect is key. Looking back, it’s kind of like walking a tightrope—every single year.
Dimitris: What exciting projects or developments can Evosonic Radio listeners look forward to as you start the next chapter?
Mike : We’re planning to broadcast from space. Seriously.
Dimitris: Mike, when you reflect on 28 years of Evosonic Radio, which personal moments are especially memorable to you?
Mike : Ha, ha, ha… answering that could take forever. If I ever write a book about it—which has been on my mind quite a few times—that’s where you’ll find all the stories, down to the smallest detail. I promise.
Dimitris: How has the station’s mission or vision evolved since the beginning?
Mike : At first, we were focused on the business side of things. Now we operate as an association, but our goal has always been the same: preserving our cultural heritage.
Dimitris: Evosonic Radio has seen a lot of technological changes over nearly three decades. Which of these developments has influenced your experience as a radio host the most?
Mike : None, really, when it comes to hosting. But as a DJ? Moving from lugging around 30 kg of vinyl records to just using a USB stick—that’s been a game-changer for me.
Dimitris: Can you think of a particularly challenging time for the station and how you managed to get through it?
Mike : Not too long ago, I dealt with some people who attacked me personally and publicly. They’re still spreading false stories because I removed them from the Evosonic platform—for good reason, I might add. They were misusing it for their own egos. How did I handle it? I didn’t respond at all. It was easy because these were people no one really takes seriously. Looking back, my mistake was not realizing sooner what kind of negativity I’d let in.
Dimitris: How do you curate content with such a diverse range of programs and artists while maintaining Evosonic’s unique vibe?
Mike : It’s pretty straightforward. I look for the unusual, the different. It HAS to be outside the norm and something I genuinely like. You’ve got to know, love, and live the music to present it on Evosonic.
Dimitris: What role has feedback from the community played in Evosonic Radio’s development over the years?
Mike : A huge role. Honestly, we probably wouldn’t still be around if it weren’t for our listeners. Their words have kept me going when I felt like giving up. Here’s an example:
Back in 1997, I was just 17. Someone at my apprenticeship said, "Hey, if you change the audio frequency on DSF, you can pick up this 'illegal' radio station… ;)))" Boom! Parents asleep, little Tobi connects the stereo to the TV, hits record—Evo Pool Update! 😍😍 Roch Dadier… Massimo… Chris Liebing… It’s Friday night! 🚀🚀🚀 Hearing your voice again feels so good. The jingles have been with me my whole life and always will be. Huge respect for sticking with it. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🤗🤗🤗

Dimitris: Are there any special shows or collaborations planned for this milestone that you feel really capture the spirit of Evosonic Radio?
Mike : Honestly, all of them do.
Dimitris: What do you think the future of radio looks like, and what role will Evosonic play in it?
Mike : As long as electronic music exists, Evosonic will be part of the scene. Whether it’s still called "radio" down the line—I don’t know. Evosonic will only disappear when I pull the plug.
Dimitris: Are there any behind-the-scenes stories from the past 28 years that you’ve never shared publicly but that really capture the essence of Evosonic?
Mike : Those stories will be in the book… if I ever get around to writing it.
