The 25th edition of Amsterdam Dance Event, which took place digitally over the past five days has reached millions of visitors from around the globe. The yearly ADE PRO conference, which traditionally takes place alongside its festival, also reshaped to an online environment and attracted thousands of professionals working in the electronic music industry.

One of the highlights included a unique live conversation between Timbaland, Martin Garrix and David Guetta on the evolution of their sound, with more than 250,000 people worldwide tuning in. Meanwhile, the ADE PRO conference delved into future prospects for artists, clubs and festivals, health issues with James Blake, activism and music with Neneh Cherry and much more. All ADE PRO content is now available on demand via the platform.

Other highlights offered in the free digital experience included the European premiere of the documentary Larry's Garage, a collaboration with Nyege Nyege festival from Uganda and a livestream from elrow with Desperados which attracted hundreds of thousands of viewers. In addition studio tours and master classes by a wide range of artists including Bloody

Mary, Carista, Carl Cox, Âme's Frank Wiedeman and Pan-Pot formed an in-depth program for the new generation of DJs, while viewers were given a unique glimpse into the future of digital performances with innovative audiovisual experiences.

Favourite moments from previous editions of ADE were shared on TikTok via the hashtag #ADEmoments throughout the week with the likes of Tiësto, Martin Garrix, Stella Bossi, Don Diablo, Armin van Buuren and Carly Wilford getting involved as well as the Rijksmuseum and other organizations. This reached more than 35 million people.
ADE co-directors, Jan-Willem van de Ven and Meindert Kennis, look back with great satisfaction on the first edition under their care: “We obviously had something different in mind when we started in December, but given the circumstances we’re happy to hear people say we’ve raised the bar for the future of digital events. It’s great that we were able to fulfil our role as a world leading platform for electronic music even in these strange times and we look forward to further developing the digital platform over the coming months to benefit our subscribers”

ADE Pro invites industry experts from Activision, EA Games, Playstation and Position Music for the panel Game On - Video Game Music in 2020 and Beyond, organised and presented by Buma Music in Motion, the platform for the innovative use of music in games, film, television and advertising.

The panelists will be taking an in-depth look at a range of pressing issues, including the music placement and scoring opportunities that exist both for AAA+ games and the growing crowd-funded independent gaming sector. The A-List panelists will also be discussing whether you really need to learn how to use games engines such as Unity to be a games composer, when and if production music is used in the sector, and which gaming music supervisors are currently curating the huge sports games playlists.
”The core-mission of Buma Music in Motion is to promote synergies between music and moving images, and one of the most fertile areas for that right now is gaming. Music forms such an integral part of today's biggest console and multi-player games, and is often used in artfully integrated, creative ways . So, we're very proud to partner with ADE to present a stellar line-up of speakers working at the forefront of music/movement innovation," says BMiM's Maartje Glas.
ADE Pro will also be hosting two BMiM Shorts from music synchronisation specialists, offering advice and pointers for people wanting to work in this growing and dynamic sector. Additionally, in between the keynotes, workshops and panels, correspondents from Berlin, Sydney, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paolo, Warsaw, Tokyo, London, Los Angeles and more, will be joining in to recount how life under lockdown has been for them, the burning issues of the day as seen by them, and their hopes for the scene and the world post-COVID 19.

“While the industry attempts to adapt to a challenging new chapter in its long and rich history, ADE is convinced that this is the time to be optimistic, positive and constructive, without losing sight of the current realities. To this end, our conference program is dominated by emerging opportunities, solid, business-based reasons to be optimistic, strategies for coping with the psychology of a crisis, and constructive engagement with the challenges ahead.” Say Meindert Kennis and Jan-Willem van de Ven, ADE Co-Directors.

ADE Pro conference topics include; New Opportunities for Artists, Labels and the Live Industry, How Music Marketing Needs to Adapt in a Pandemic, The Technology Behind Triller, Activism and Music featuring Femi Kuti & Robert Hood, Sexual Misconduct and Gender Equality in the Music Industry, Music in Video Games and Synching and Sampling. The conference program will also look at modern piracy on the high seas with Pulitzer Prize winner Ian Urbina and his recently launched music project featuring Steve Rachmad and Vince Watson, as well as the astounding wave of musical creativity currently exploding across the African continent.

The countdown to ADE Pro 2020 has officially begun, and we're kicking off October by tackling some of the industry's most pressing issues throughout our digital conference program. Joined by professionals from organisations including AFEM, Conflux Connect, Netflix and the University of Portsmouth, we're delving into gender discrimination, the lack of intersectionality and sexual misconduct in the electronic music industry.

Alongside that, ADE is working with the Nyege Nyege Festival from Uganda to offer first-hand insight into the many emerging scenes across Africa, and with the help of two specialist publishers, we will be dissecting the pressurised and complicated situation that publishers and lawyers often have to confront surrounding publishing splits between writers and big-name DJs.

The Only One in the Room - Gender Equality on the Workfloor

Matthew Adell (CEO, OnNow.tv), Kikelomo Oludemi (Product experience specialist, Native Instruments), Meriem Nassiri (Photo & AV Studio Lead, Netflix), Prof. Dr. Samantha Warren (Professor of Organization Studies, University of Portsmouth), Sarah Hildering van Lith (co-chair, AFEM), Shino Parker (co-chair, AFEM Diversity & Inclusion working group)

Five female music professionals and one male return to ADE in 2020 to talk about gender discrimination and the lack of intersectionality in the electronic music industry. They will attempt to understand how gender discrimination relates to racism, as well as to intolerance towards religions and sexual orientation, by looking at successful initiatives from other sectors to understand how to apply their successes to the music industry. As part of our ongoing efforts to establish the AFEM Code of Conduct, Sarah Hildering and Matt Adell will present ideas on how we can apply the code to workplaces, the live sector, and on the dance floor.

Alongside that, Dr. Samantha Warren returns to present further findings from the AFEM Diversity & Inclusion Survey results, part of AFEM's broader long-term commitment to understanding the mix & make-up of diversity within electronic music.

Please follow the link to take part in the ongoing survey if you work in the electronic music industry. We are interested in all companies within the electronic music industry, so please complete the survey even if you are a freelancer or small business. SURVEY HERE

Sexual Misconduct in the Music Industry: Some Solutions

Jori Lowery (founder, Conflux Connect)

Sexual misconduct within the music industry is a problem that has existed as long as the industry itself, and a topic that has been much discussed over recent months, and one about which Conflux Connect founder Jori Lowery advocates zero tolerance. Lowery will also be introducing us to OutSmartNYC, a group of industry professionals based in New York City that offers workshops, certifications and active solutions aimed at creating a safe environment in the nightlife and events industries. Lowery and OutsmartNYC will be laying out their mission, defining sexual violence and its catastrophic effects on individuals, explaining how best to intervene, and answering the big questions, such as why victims may not want to come forward, how to encourage victims to feel safe regardless, and the proper procedures for handling situations such as these.

How Africa is Redefining Electronic Music

DJ Asna (DJ), Ibaaku (Artist), Rophnan (Artist / producer), Slikback (Producer)

We're teaming up with the Nyege Nyege Festival from Uganda to offer first-hand insight into the scenes and sub-genres that are emerging all across Africa. This one panel obviously cannot truly do justice to such an immense continent and all the exciting and highly original stuff that is happening there right now, but it does give us the insider's view on the developments, opportunities and struggles that are part of a flourishing and lively scene, as seen through the eyes of artists from Egypt, Ethiopia, The Ivory Coast, and Senegal amongst others.

The Elephant in the Room: Publishing Splits

Miller Williams (Senior VP Creative, Kobalt Music Group), Rachel Graham (Head of Music Publishing, Passé Publishing)

Negotiating publishing shares between a DJ and songwriters is complicated and impacts multiple projects across the mainstream dance scene. Every such release faces issues, including: is it better to talk about DJ shares before a DJ starts adding music/production to a topline? How does a DJ’s 'market value' impact on publishing shares - and vice versa for A-list songwriters? Does the number of writers on a song affect the percentage publishing a DJ might receive? Also important and unresolved is the fact that songwriters don't usually participate in gig fees, merchandise or artist royalties, so why should DJs have an equal or larger publishing share than the original writers?

The Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), the global industry meeting point and citywide festival for electronic music, is to go digital-first for its 2020 edition, which will take place from October 21st - 25th. This October's exceptional online edition of ADE Pro has set out to dive into the future of the global music industry after an unprecedented year, tackling strategies and new opportunities with key players in the industry, including CEOs, label representatives, musicians, mental health experts and other music professionals from around the globe. To ease your navigation through this year's extensive digital conference, we have rounded up the program items confirmed so far.

You have no doubt already heard about our most recent conference updates, including James Blake in conversation with Jennie Morton, a conversation between Femi Kuti & Robert Hood, The Outlaw Ocean Project with Pulitzer Prize winner Ian Urbina, Steve Rachmad and Vince Watson, and an in-depth workshop on what makes games, film and TV resonate featuring Deborah Mannis-Gardner.

Now, we are excited to have rounded up the first series of panels, conversations and interviews diving into the many aspects surrounding the future of the music industry after the heavy impact of the global pandemic on venues, events, artists, professionals and music enthusiasts alike:

Femi Kuti and Robert Hood in conversation about the politics in their music during ADE Pro

ADE Pro will be hosting a virtual conversation featuring two veteran musicians who are also famously not afraid to let their politics inform their musical output. Robert Hood, one of a trio of founding members of Underground Resistance, and Nigeria's Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti, known to most of us as Femi Kuti, will be discussing the delicate and highly personal way that politics and music are, and always have been, inseparable in their lives.

Kuti is the son of Afrobeat legend and activist Fela Kuti, and the grandson of political campaigner and women's rights activist Funmilayo Ransome Kuti. He showed his true political colours in September this year when he stated publicly that he would not join Nigeria's ruling party, the APC, when he refused to enter politics as he had yet to find a party that has the interest of Nigerians at heart.

Robert Hood famously first came to wider attention as a member of one of the most radical and politically progressive musical collectives, Underground Resistance, as the group's Minister of Information. Although since then he has generally been better known as one of the inventors of minimalist techno, his recent track The Struggle, featured an acid-influenced techno backing overlaid with a speech by the activist Tamika Mallory given just after the murder of George Floyd. The B-side, meanwhile, samples the comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory on Save The Children.

The two will be sharing the issues that matter most to them, how that passion filters through into their music, their plans for the coming months, and how the pandemic has impacted their need to fight for justice for all of us.

 The Outlaw Ocean Music Project

The book is based on five years of reporting, much of it offshore, exploring lawlessness on the high seas. More recently Urbina has launched The Outlaw Ocean Project non-profit organisation, which engages in innovative storytelling practices on ocean issues, and also features The Outlaw Ocean Music Project, melding music by Steve Rachmad and Vince Watson with Urbina’s passionate and ground-breaking journalism. The trio will be discussing the joy and pain of creating music to accompany and compliment the dramatic storylines that make up this modern-day tale of cat and mouse, currently being played out on the world’s oceans.

New Opportunities for the Live Industry

Derek Debru (Co-founder, Nyege Nyege Festival), Nicolas Bonard (CEO, Montreux Jazz Festival), Tom Lally (Senior booking agent, Source Artists) and more

New Opportunities for the Live Industry tackles the strategies for coping with the huge impact of Covid-19 on everything from small venues and clubs through to large-scale open air and indoor events. This multi-part panel series will include discussions between representatives of the live scene, agents and managers, plus an audience Q&A, all dominated by one very big issue: what are the positive takeaways from the live shutdown, and what sort of live scene do we really want to see emerging in the years ahead?

How To Mentally Manage The Next 6 Months

Dr. Aida Vazin (GPS Counselor), Tamsin Embleton (Founder, Music Industry Therapist Collective), Tom Middleton (recording artist & co-chair, AFEM Health Group)

As the impact of Covid-19 working restrictions continues in the physical world, from closed offices and festivals to shut down conferences and clubs, the issue of looking after our mental health is paramount. Our panel of experts will be looking at the importance of sleep patterns and how to protect your physical and mental state. They'll also be sharing advice on what you can do to help protect the mental and physical health of those around you whilst partial and regional lockdowns continue.

New Opportunities for Labels and Artists

Bloody Mary (DJ & label owner, Dame-Music), Roland Leesker (DJ & managing director, Get Physical Music), Michael Ugwu (CEO, FreeMe Digital), Susan Gloy (Director of Industry Relations, Beatport) and more

The multi-part panel series New Opportunities for Labels and Artists takes an in-depth look at the question of how sociological and societal shifts created by the pandemic affect the world and the place, power and relevance of music within it. Because everything that was previously accepted as normal is now being examined and questioned in a very different light, which areas are the most promising in terms of a thoroughly fresh approach, and how might the post-Covid structure of the music business look?

How can technology help artists? How do you make virtual shows as engaging and satisfying as events in real life, and what other new, tech-led systems are helping artists to get paid properly for their work?

The Artist-Centric Future of Marketing

Charles Kirby-Welch (CEO, Kartel Music Group), Claudia de Wolff (VP Creative Content and Programming, Vevo), Michael Aneto (Chief Design Officer, SAI)

Welcome to the new reality where streaming rules and the traditional measures of artist success, such as radio and TV plays and, to a lesser degree, charts, are becoming less relevant. What used to be a relatively rapid process of radio play > TV appearance > chart position, has been replaced by an altogether more complicated chain of events. It's already very clear that a marketing focus around tracks is not enough, replaced by the need to sell the artists and everything about their creative world. What new skills do marketeers need, and how do you translate data into effective, engaging actions and positive results?

The Future of Merchandising and Fan Engagement

Alex Drewniak (Artist manager & founder, Beatcave Digital), Aly Gillani (UK/EU Label Rep, Bandcamp), Maru Asmellash (Co-founder, The New Originals)

A revolution is coming in how fans show their allegiance and what they wear to show that tribal identity. While it is clear that personalisation and unique designs will form the core of the next wave of merchandise products, the future of artist/fan relationships seems to be one of increasing intimacy and personalisation. How close can an artist get to his or her fans in order to leverage the enormous possibilities offered by such levels of customisation, and what does that mean to record labels and their artists, the merchandising industry and streaming platforms?

Hipgnosis' Global Strategy and the Future of Song Management

Merck Mercuriadis (Founder, Hipgnosis Songs Fund Limited)

Mercuriadis opens up about what Hipgnosis intends to achieve through song management, how he intends to continue his buying-spree, the strategy behind Hipgnosis, and what the future of publishing and publishers might be.

Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) confirms first speakers for digital conference and announces ADE Specials

The Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), the global industry meeting point and citywide festival for electronic music, is to go digital-first for its 2020 edition, which will take place from October 21st - 25th. The first speakers for the virtual ADE Pro conference alongside a select number of Covid-proof seated concerts and cross-cultural projects under the ADE Specials banner, set to take place in Amsterdam in close coordination with the city council.

This year’s 25th anniversary edition of ADE was set to become the biggest celebration of electronic music yet. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the organisers of the annual gathering have been obliged to ensure the safety of its 400,000 international visitors by shifting its conference program to an online-first environment, as well as drastically changing its festival proposition to a limited number of seated ADE Specials.

The latest announcement by the Dutch government affecting clubs and nightlife is another blow for the industry, says co-director Jan-Willem van de Ven: “Clubs and music venues form the backbone of Amsterdam’s nightlife and are incredibly important in shaping and innovating the cultural identity of the city, its inhabitants and visitors alike. Without them, electronic music loses an integral part of its culture and industry and therefore needs all support from the government.”

Nonetheless, co-director Meindert Kennis is confident ADE can continue to provide a leading industry platform for artists and industry professionals. “Creating a digital alternative of ADE’s annual industry gathering in Amsterdam was quite a puzzle because we needed to represent not just a conference program, but meaningful connections between visitors as well. Whereas other digital conferences offer a one-off knowledge sharing event, we wanted to embrace the challenge of investing in a sustainable social platform that provides real value throughout the year for music industry professionals globally.”

Some of the first confirmed ADE Pro digital conference highlights include Grammy award-winning artist James Blake in conversation with mental health expert Jennie Morton, and an in-depth workshop on music clearance by Deborah Mannis-Gardner, as well as panels talks and interviews with Bandcamp's Aly Gillani, VFX specialist Angelo White, VEVO’s Claudia de Wolff, BBC Radio 1 DJ Jaguar and music industry entrepreneur Merck Mercuriadis. More ADE Pro announcements are set to follow soon.

The ADE 2020 Digital Pro Pass grants access to the entire ADE Pro conference program as well as a year-long subscription to its social media platform. It also includes a hefty discount for next year’s edition, and is available here.

The first participating venues under the Covid-proof ADE Specials banner to take place throughout Amsterdam include Bimhuis, Concertgebouw, Melkweg, Paradiso and Paradiso Noord, with more to be announced soon. Furthermore, the organisation will provide a free online platform that hosts a variety of digital content including DJ sets, artist talks, studio tours, masterclasses and an art & film program.

News about ADE 2020’s offering and program, including confirmed artists and news about its virtual efforts, will follow soon. All news and updates can be found here.
