inner city electronic returns to Leeds for another citywide celebration of electronic music and culture on Saturday June 1st 2019. Taking place across a selection of Leeds-based venues, this year’s festival will run for 24-hours, mirroring Leeds’ cultural renaissance as a European-style 24-hour city. The first names announced for the multi-venue event include Nina Kraviz, Nightmares On Wax, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Ben Ufo, Octave One, DJ Stingray, Ross From Friends and many others. 

inner city electronic will take place at 11 of the leading venues in Leeds including Brudenell Social Club, Church Leeds, Distrikt, Freedom Mills, Hifi, Hope House, Hyde Park Book Club, Old Red Bus Station, Sheaf St, Wire, The Wardrobe, plus secret locations to be announced. 

With venues ranging from 250 to 1700 capacity, the festival offers a unique experience to explore the city across a range of parties and events, from small intimate art galleries boasting state of the art sound systems to terrace parties, industrial warehouses and even an 18th century church. 

The festival line up will perform at venues across the city over 24-hours, running alongside a comprehensive daytime programme of talks and workshops at the conference, focused on musical development, music industry, culture and technology, which is yet to be announced.

Last year’s conference program featured masterclasses from the likes of KiNK and Prince Fatty, an ‘in conversation’ series of talks with artists Craig Richards, Paul Woolford and Midland and a range of talks and panels with numerous industry panellists. In addition inner city electronic played host to technology showcases from the likes of TPI Audio, Master Sounds, Pioneer, Rane, Akai and many more.

CHURCH LEEDS 

Church Leeds has been dubbed one of the most exciting venues the city has to offer. A stunning grade II listed church that boasts a state of the art El Acoustic sound system that has played host to the likes of Jeff Mills, Fatboy Slim, Erick Morillo, Louie Vega, Kolsch, Derrick Carter, Craig Richards, Todd Terry, Damian Lazarus & Matthias Tanzmann to name just a few.


WIRE

The city’s much-loved, iconic basement venue pushes quality underground music in an intimate setting. The club is powered by a full Funktion One Sound system and is a favoured home to many world class DJs, with previous guest including Daniel Avery, Midland, Ben UFO, Hunee, Joy Orbison and many more.  


HIFI

The HiFi Club is home to a wide range of DJ-led and live music nights based around a variety of musical genres, including soul, funk, hip hop, Motown, reggae and disco, with previous guests including Nightmares on Wax, Onra, Horse Meat Disco, Gilles Peterson and many more.  


BRUDENELL SOCIAL CLUB

The Brudenell is a lively and fun loving venue that embraces music and art under a wide and diverse umbrella that has no boundaries. Their open music policy promotes freedom and creation and holds the belief that music and expression provide useful social interaction. It is a community ‘non profitmaking’ venue that holds charitable status, based in Leeds 6. The Brudenell Social Club is owned by its members, run by its members, for its members.


FREEDOM MILLS

Freedom Mills offers an exciting, stripped back warehouse space on the outskirts of the city centre.
This charismatic venue has played host to the likes of Hessle Audio, Subdub, Iration Steppas, and a long line of local promotion outfits. 


THE WARDROBE

The Wardrobe sits amongst some of the most iconic live music venues in the city. Since opening its doors in 1999 it has played host to a vast array of live music, as well as comedy and club nights in its basement venue. Wardrobe plays an integral role to the cities Live at Leeds festival as well as curating a board range of regular club and live shows with previous guests including Trevor Nelson, Dutch Uncles, Aquilo, JP Cooper, Sub Motion Orchestra and many more.  


DISTRIKT 

Distrikt is a unique, intimate, underground bar located in the city centre that has played as a firm favourite for underground music enthusiasts in the city. Boasting a state of the art sound system and outdoor terrace space, the venue has seen the likes of Shonky (Apollonia), Adam Shelton, Nick Curly, Nightmares on wax, Session Victim, Gideon, Audiojack, San Proper, Marshall Jefferson and many more illuminate its dance floor.  

  
SHEAF ST 

With a new lease of life being poured into a red brick Victorian factory on the cusp of the south side of the River Aire, Sheaf Street offers an artistically inspiring cafeteria, events space and terrace, which is situated as the front door to Duke Studios, a creative co-working and studio space. As a venue, Sheaf Street is quickly becoming a favourite for local residents and promoters and has recently been fitted with a custom-built Pioneer sound system.


HOPE HOUSE

Hope House is the home of inspiring Leeds based organisation MAP (Music and Arts Production) that provides alternative education for young people who are having difficulty accessing mainstream education. The Hope House Gallery occasionally holds exhibitions and events, using both internal and external art, as well as the much-loved underground clubbing event Cosmic Slop. As a venue it has recently received notoriety due to its outstanding custom-built sound system, created based on the sound system in New York’s famous Paradise Garage club.

OLD RED BUS STATION

The Old Red Bus Station is a bar, music club and canteen, which has transformed an out of use relic of the city's past and has quickly become home to a selection of the city’s underground electronic music events. The venue offers two events spaces spanning both floors of the old station with a stripped back industrial interior. 


HYDE PARK BOOK CLUB

Hyde Park Book Club is one of the city’s many unique gems. Situated on the edge of the city centre, the venue is a boutique arts space serving coffee, beers, wines and food on Leeds’ Hyde Park Corner. Through the day, a chilled out space to hang out, eat, meet, read or write. At night, an array of the most interesting creative groups from the city pop by to speak, perform, exhibit and play, with a wide range of happenings from techno to spoken word poetry.

Alongside a vast array of great electronic music, the multi venue festival will also feature a programme of talks and workshops, and live masterclasses with KiNK and Prince Fatty. There are technology presentations and workshops from world leading companies including Pioneer DJ, Roland, Rane as well as cutting edge independents like London Modular, NorthSouth, TPI Sound and MasterSounds.

inner city electronic’s talks and workshops aim to enable people to find creative avenues in music, with a host of professional recording artists, agents, managers and label owners set to tell their stories and share their experiences, as well as discussing electronic music history and culture.

KiNK - Live Masterclass

With his live performances KiNK manages to bridge the divide between man and machine. KiNK's live masterclass will give people an opportunity to learn some of the technical tips and tricks that go into his performance.

Prince Fatty - Dub Masterclass

A strong theme running though inner city is the crucial role of dub reggae and it’s impact on electronic music, especially in Leeds. Prince Fatty is a master on the board with dub FX and has worked with Hollie Cook, Adrian Sherwood, Dub Syndicate, A Tribe Called Quest and many more. Prince Fatty gives a masterclass in dub before performing live with Iration Steppas.

Community Sound With Cosmic Slop
‘You’d never expect to find one of the best custom sound systems in the country hidden away in an unfashionable inner city area of Leeds, but Tom Smith from Cosmic Slop has indeed created one. Smith researched classic New York sound systems including The Gallery and Paradise Garage before tirelessly setting about buying individual elements on eBay and assembling them. The resulting system is used exclusively for fund-raising Cosmic Slop parties to support the MAP charity. A sound that benefits the community is the heart warming story presented by Tom Smith at Hope House.’
London Modular
‘Currently making waves as London Modular Alliance Live, this workshop will give an introduction to modular synthesis including a brief history, basics of control voltage and signal routing, CV, gates, triggers, VCAs and envelopes. You will be able to get hands on and try some of the latest and best modular gear and patches with Phil Ventre from LMA on hand in person to assist’.

Equaliser is a Leeds-based club night and collective, providing a platform and free to access DJ workshops for non-cis* male DJs and electronic music talent, they’ll be joined by Danielle Moore, sharing her expertise on DJing, and music production with her band Crazy P.

The producer forum gives emerging artists an opportunity to play their tracks to professionals on the Cosmic Slop custom built sound system.

inner city electronic will take place at Belgrave Music Hall, Church, Distrikt, Headrow House, Hope House, Hyde Park Book Club, Hi-Fi, Old Red Bus Station, Sheaf St, Wire & The Wardrobe. This will be the first time these venues have assembled together, representing a unique spirit of collaboration. 

The range and scope of the spaces is staggering, ranging in capacity from 1200 to 120. There are 4 outdoor terraces for day parties and 15 different dance floors featuring an eclectic mix of music. The event curation is focused on cutting edge electronic music with live acts, DJ performances and cutting edge talent from a mix of international and local artists. inner city electronic will also feature some of the best sound systems in the city, including custom built rigs from Subdub and Cosmic Slop, alongside an industry leading sound instillation from TPI sound.
