Dennis Sheperd has built a respected career in the trance and progressive music scene with over 60 million Spotify streams and performances in more than 30 countries. He’s played at iconic venues and festivals such as ASOT Festival, Ministry of Sound, Space Miami, Stereo Montreal, Colosseum Jakarta, Home Sydney, and Avalon Hollywood. Along the way, he’s collaborated with industry legends including Markus Schulz, Rank 1, Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Gareth Emery, and Above & Beyond. One of his standout career moments was mixing In Search Of Sunrise 18, a compilation previously helmed by Tiësto, cementing his reputation as a producer with vision and depth.
Known for his powerful vocal collaborations, Dennis has worked with celebrated singers like Clementine Douglas, Diana Miro, JES, Christina Novelli, Jonathan Mendelsohn, Eric Lumiere, and Ana Criado. These partnerships have led to tracks that connect with listeners around the world while showcasing his signature melodic sound. Dennis continues to explore new creative directions while building on the style that has defined his career.
His latest sixth studio album, The Next Generation, out 26th of September, is a bold and innovative project that redefines the art of collaboration. Instead of inviting the usual roster of established names, Sheperd chose to exclusively work with his own production students from across the globe—spanning Canada, the USA, Mexico, Australia, the UK, and Poland. The result is a vibrant fusion of mentorship and creativity, combining Sheperd’s polished, powerful sound with the fresh, genre-blurring ideas of rising talent.
Moving effortlessly between progressive trance, melodic techno, and uplifting euphoric moments, the album is a journey for both DJs seeking peak-time tracks and trance fans who crave emotional storytelling.
In this interview, we dive into his creative journey, his approach to mentorship, and how he continues to shape the future of electronic music.
Dimitris: What initially sparked the idea for this album, and how did that inspiration evolve over time?
Dennis: The idea came one night in December last year, when I thought that it would be so cool to give my super talented students a platform to shine. So, I decided to collaborate with 16 of my mentees and created a beautiful album with all of them, mostly consisting of vocal records done with amazing singers.
Dimitris: Were there any specific life experiences, places, or emotions that influenced the album’s themes?
Dennis: This was the time that I moved to Bali, Indonesia, officially. So, this new place and environment was very inspiring for me. And I feel this reflects in the album as well.
Dimitris: Which artists, genres, or cultural movements inspired the sound and feel of this album?
Dennis: The album is super varied. It goes from deep house to progressive house, melodic house, melodic techno to progressive trance, and even oldskool trance! Of course, every of my student has their own style and this had to be taken into consideration when creating the album.
Dimitris: How does this album reflect your growth as an artist compared to your previous releases?
Dennis: Even though I have always been very open minded genre wise, I feel this album reflects this the most. I also think that the consistency of quality here is very very high. So overall, I'm very proud of the album!
Dimitris: Can you describe your creative process when producing this album from start to finish?
Dennis: Every production is starting differently for me. Sometimes it's a melody that I come up with, that's super inspiring. Sometimes I create a cool drum pattern and take it from there. So the process always differs. However, making everything sound cohesive takes a bit of work and adjustments on each track.
Dimitris: What role did experimentation play in crafting the unique sounds throughout the album?
Dennis: Experimentation is always a huge thing in my productions. It may not alway be noticeable, but it could just be with background sounds, certain effects, or even how the final structure was decided (through experimentation).
Dimitris: What software, synthesizers, or production tools were essential in bringing your vision to life?
Dennis: In terms of software synthsizers, I mainly used 3 synthesisers on the album: Serum 2, Diva and Jup-8000 V. In terms of processing tools, I really love everything that FabFilter and Soundtoys do. Their plugins are essential in my productions.
Dimitris: How do you approach sound design and layering to create complex textures in your tracks?
Dennis: Sometimes it's a bit of trial and error until I get there and sometimes I have a very clear vision of how I want my sounds to sound. Either way, I usually get there and try to create something that sounds unique.
Dimitris: How do you manage dynamic range and sonic clarity, especially when dealing with dense electronic arrangements?
Dennis: With today's tools this is fairly easy. 15 years ago it was so much harder! But with TrackSpacer, Soothe 2 and dynamic EQ's it's so easy to make space while keeping the production extremely full.
Dimitris: Was there a track that went through significant changes from its initial idea to the final version? What was that journey like?
Dennis: My track 'Too Late' with Ponymeadow is one of those tracks. We started with a totally different instrumental. Then I went to Amsterdam and recorded vocals with Katty Heath for the record. And then we changed everything, melodies, arrangement, structure, simply everything. And it turned out so nice!
Dimitris: Can you discuss the mixing and mastering process for this album? Were there any unique techniques you applied?
Dennis: Not really, mixing and mastering is not a very creative process per se in my opinion. Not to say that I don't love it - I really do! But I believe it's more of a logical and mathematical process than anything else. Having said that, it's my favorite part of music production I would say. Really love it. :)
Dimitris: Were there specific tracks that served as pivotal points for the album’s overall sound or theme?
Dennis: Yes, I would say 'What Is Left Of Me' and 'In The Dark' are both records that kinda set the mood for the album.
Dimitris: How do you choose collaborators who align with your artistic vision and sound?
Dennis: I think chemistry is everything! With collaborators as well as with vocalists. No chemistry, no collab! Simple as that. After that comes artistic vision and whether or not I love their sound.
Dimitris: How did you structure the tracklist to create a specific journey or narrative for the listener?
Dennis: It's a very intuitive process for me. I like the increase the energy throughout the album and go 'higher and higher' towards the end (pun intended). Small explanation here: The last track of my album is called 'Higher' and it features repeated "higher and higher" vocal parts. :)
Dimitris: How do you hope listeners will feel when they experience this album from start to finish?
Dennis: Uplifted, inspired and grateful. :)
Dimitris: What feedback from fans or peers has been most meaningful to you regarding this project?
Dennis: There has been so much good feedback on this album and its concept. It really makes me happy to see that people appreciate the efforts I make towards the next generation.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your journey, insights, and experiences with us. Your thoughtful responses will surely inspire and resonate with fans and fellow artists alike. We truly appreciate your contribution to the electronic music community and look forward to witnessing your continued success!
Thanks so much to Dennis who was so kind to reply in this interview.

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Dennis Sheperd's lead single, "What Is Left Of Me," from the forthcoming album Next Generation, is a masterclass in progressive trance production. This track not only showcases Sheperd's veteran artistry but also highlights his commitment to nurturing fresh talent through his collaboration with rising producer George Jema and the angelic vocals of Katty Heath. Clocking in at 126 BPM, "What Is Left Of Me" is a dreamy melodic progressive trance composition that intertwines technical precision with emotional depth. The production kicks off with pulsating basslines that form a solid, rhythmic foundation. These basslines are meticulously layered with chunky grooves, creating an immersive low-end that resonates powerfully in club settings. The track's percussive elements are equally noteworthy. The electro-touched kicks provide a sharp, driving force that cuts through the mix, complemented by crisp hi-hats and intricate snare placements that maintain an energizing cadence. The rhythmic structure is skillfully crafted, using sidechain compression to allow the bass and kick to interact dynamically, enhancing the track's overall punch and fluidity. Synthesizer work in "What Is Left Of Me" is both lush and evocative. Sheperd and Jema employ a variety of analog and digital synths, crafting dreamy pads and soaring leads that ebb and flow with the track’s emotional landscape. The melodic progression is thoughtfully arranged, with each synth layer adding depth and texture, ultimately building towards euphoric climaxes that are both uplifting and cathartic. Katty Heath’s ethereal vocals are the soul of the track. Her voice is treated with subtle reverb and delay effects, creating a spacious, almost otherworldly ambiance that perfectly complements the track's melodic elements. The vocal arrangement is carefully woven into the mix, with strategic automation applied to enhance emotional crescendos and lyrical emphasis. Mixing and mastering elevate "What Is Left Of Me" to a polished, professional standard. The stereo imaging is expansive, with a well-balanced frequency spectrum that ensures clarity and presence across all playback systems. Dynamic range is preserved, allowing the emotional highs and lows to breathe naturally without falling into the trap of over-compression. In conclusion, "What Is Left Of Me" is an exemplary progressive trance anthem that encapsulates heartbreak and hope through masterful production techniques and heartfelt melodic storytelling. It's a track that not only captures the listener's heart and soul but also stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of trance music. #PureGold #LoveIT[/content]

Taglo reimagines the track at 124 BPM, seamlessly blending deep trance with progressive and melodic techno nuances. The remix’s foundation is built upon smooth, resonant deep basslines that create an immersive low-end warmth. Taglo employs chunky, syncopated grooves enhanced by laid-back tribal percussion, which adds an organic texture to the electronic tapestry. A standout feature of this remix is the atmospheric layering of dreamy synth pads, meticulously modulated to evolve throughout the track. The subtle use of reverb and delay effects creates a spacious, ethereal soundscape that perfectly complements Katty Heath’s enchanting vocal performance. Her voice is processed with light chorus effects and delicate EQ adjustments to ensure clarity and presence within the mix, making the vocal lines feel both intimate and expansive. Transitioning to "Angels," remixed by Freak E Beatz & RELEJI, the track is transformed into a peak-time, mainstage proglifting anthem clocking in at 135 BPM. Dennis Sheperd’s been on a journey, and it’s been one he’s documented album-by-album each step of the way. Through title and theme, ‘A Tribute To Life’, ‘Fight Your Fears’, ‘Find The Sunrise’ and 2022’s ‘Onwards // Upwards’ have all touched on, alluded to or out-and-out addressed the area of mental wellbeing. It goes without saying that it’s a topic as close and personal to Dennis as any. So much so that it pushed him to co-found Soundcation – the music production retreat specifically geared towards budding producers, and led by artists like Jerome Isma-Ae, Protoculture and Dennis himself.
With his newest album however, Sheperd’s widening the lens and focusing on a next-step challenge. After ‘Onwards // Upwards’ hinted at a life being taken more in its stride, it’s time to release ‘Release’.
Dennis elaborates: “’Release’s title carries a deep personal significance for me, delivering a message I feel strongly about. We all grow up shaped by certain environments, rules, and expectations, but without questioning them, we may never truly live out our full potential. Now is the time to break free, shed the limitations, and open your mind to life in its purest and most complete form. This is the essence of what I’ve tried to do here, venturing into more sub-genres of electronic dance music than ever before. I hope you get as much pleasure from listening to it as I had making it!”
As with Dennis’s previous longforms, ‘Release’ is near universally a collaborative affair, for which a handful of his ‘Onwards // Upwards’ cohorts return. Among them is regular sergeant-at-arms George Jema, co-producing on the cool ‘n’ breezy saxophony of ‘Illusion Of Time’. Koni Blank meanwhile helps add the pixelated-beats and piano tints to ‘Majestic’, while RELEJI’s synths reign (and rain down on!) ‘You & Me’. Alongside Freak E Beatz, Katty Heath strikes a wonderfully pensive note on ‘Afraid To Feel’, while Freak returns two tracks later on the irrepressible ‘Rhythm Taking Over’.
In order to “venture into more sub-genres than ever before” though, Dennis has a predominantly new album tribe in tow. ‘Afterlight’ (which spotlights the Milanese tones of Alessia Labate) lets the bass bounce and good vibes flow, as does the album’s midpoint, where Dennis and KITA team up for ‘Outer Space’. More transcendental, ‘Swim’ assumes a progressive stance, while ‘Release’s theme could hardly be better served than by ‘Liberation’s hail. One track later, Cari is starting to see through those ‘Perfect Lies’, while ‘Release’ approaches its finale moments with ‘Resonance’, which has a trancier profile. Having topped the album with the foundationally atmospheric ‘Morning Glory’, Dennis tails it with its jaunting, title-says-it-all closeout, ‘Epilog’.
An album (and artist!) on a mission, ‘Release’ leads by example, breaking free from previous constraints, while subtly encouraging all to transcend the boundaries along with it. The album’s available wherever all good music is sold or streamed FIND HERE

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Dennis Sheperd had a wonderful 2022 with series of quality releases collaborating with awesome producers and great singers like Diana Miro. Their common beauty is called Denials. The track itself moves within the progressive territory of 122 BPM with slow deep moody basslines, chunky grooves and dark melancholic distorted synthy hooks that support perfectly Diana's vocal performance of the so touching and moving lyrics. It is easy listening perfect to warm your audience and keep them hypnotized on the dancefloor singing along and feeling its inner beauty and strength. Soundscapes on the way that Dennis knows as he is truly versatile and very capable on what he is doing for years now. [/content]
Long before lockdown, Dennis Sheperd was way ahead of the conversational curve, addressing the areas of mindfulness and mental wellbeing through his 2015 album, ‘Fight Your Fear’. Given that six years elapsed between that LP and 2021’s ‘Find The Sunrise’, you could be forgiven for a sense of surprise at the speed with which he’s achieved ‘Sunrise’s follow-up.
It's not been an exactly quiet 365 for the producer from Essen, Germany either. Aside from peppering its course with precursor singles, he’s also mixed an ‘In Search of Sunrise’ disc, co-hosted this year’s Trance Retreat @ ADE and toured all four corners of the globe. Some of the follow-up’s rapidity however may have been born of necessity. Artistically, stylistically and topically, the album has a brother-in-arms like relationship with ‘Find The Sunrise’. It’s title, ‘Onwards // Upwards’ also says much as to the headspace Dennis has found himself in this year.
Sheperd has realised the album with an almost entirely new cast of co-producers and featured singers too (with only George Jema, EKE & RELEJI returning from ‘Sunrise’). Amongst ‘Onwards // Upwards’ cohorts you’ll find the likes of York, Diana Miro, Scott Cameron, Mira Feeder, Nic Toms, Elliot Johns and others, all lending voice and further studio creativity to its proceedings.
It’s entirely possible that with your first spins of ‘Onwards // Upwards’, a line won’t immediately be drawn between its music and the album’s inspirational subject matter. That’s largely down to Dennis’s skill at alluding and echoing subtly through the music, rather than writing it big-print-large on each of the album’s 14 tracks.
Through the succession of 2022 album precursors, (‘Run’, ‘Wishful Thinking’, ‘The Fall’, ‘Intouchable’, ‘Sugar Coat’ amongst them), those messages are there to discover. They are though bound up in artful lyric writing, smart metaphor and elegant figuration, albeit in a fashion that never loses sight of their primary clubfloor and airwave directives.
Largely tracking ‘Find The Sunrise’s stylistic arc, ‘Onwards // Upwards’ does spread its tonal wings wider than Dennis’s best-known-for, regularly stepping into cooler, deeper and more downtempo arenas. ‘Denials’ with Diana Miro keeps the tempo low, whilst setting the mood at simmer, while the Nadda Mercenary-sung ‘Every Little Thing’ exists in much the same space. ‘Cryptoverse’, one of the album’s few instrumentals has a looming, impressing and faintly dystopian edge to it, while ‘Hearts’ adds some old skool breakbeats to the album’s equation. Its magnificent swansong is the Mira Feder-voiced ‘Torture’ - an astonishingly powerful-yet-club-catchy number, already being talked about as a potential best-ever from Sheperd. A more fitting finale, it’s hard to imagine and ‘Onwards // Upwards’ heads in precisely that direction. It’s available now through all good online stores here.

Crowning high summer in the time-honoured (and frankly only decent!) fashion, this year’s ‘In Search Of Sunrise’ is on the none-to-distant horizon. Its 18th expedition, the series that MIXMAG dubbed “the Superbowl of mixcomps” and “the greatest trance series of them all” returns for more epic, sun-questing exploits
With both hands firmly on its stylistic yoke, Markus Schulz delivers his fifth from the lead-mix position. Stuffed to capacity with exclusives, first-hears and bespoke-created studio work, as fluidly as ever its sonics travel the innerspace of progressive, trance and euphoric techno.
If any electronic music compilation album can lay claim to having its very own lane, it’s ‘ISOS’. Defined more by its feel, tempo & vibe than any one genre, the continuance of its unique atmosphere has been a matter of honour for every spinner entrusted with it. Following in the path of previous ‘ISOS’-creating artists, (Giuseppe Ottaviani, Jerome Isma-Ae, Andy Moor, Kryder, Kyau & Albert & Gabriel & Dresden among them), 2022’s sees Markus joined by France’s Matt Fax and fellow German, Dennis Sheperd. Collectively, ‘ISOS18’s co-mixers have once again summoned the one-of-a-kind feel and fashioned it into nigh-on four hours of dawn-adorning audio.
Featuring music from Above & Beyond & Mat Zo, Purple Haze, Ferry Corsten/Gouryella, Grum, Will Atkinson, Solarstone, Chicane, BT, Sunny Lax and a galaxy of other renowned music producers from across its spectrum, ‘In Search of Sunrise 18’ sees the light on September 2.
Few DJs who operate with more stylistic latitude than Markus Schulz (something that probably helped land him the ISOS role in the first place!). He brings all that formative open-till-close nous to bare on a mix that’s twenty tracks rich, an hour & fifteen deep and mind-expandingly wide. Overturing with his quintessentially sunrise-esque ‘When the Light Breaks in Sarmi’, he elevates straight into recent Emma Hewitt collab, ‘Into My Arms’. When it comes to renowned names, Markus pulls no punches, drawing on the latest from Above & Beyond & Mat Zo, Purple Haze, Jam & Spoon, Will Atkinson, Kyau & Albert, Grum and others to keep 2022’s ‘Search’ dialled in. Peppered throughout is plenty from Markus’s own Coldharbour cohort, too, with spear-sharp material from Daxson, NOMADSignal, Mike EFEX and others. Markus also has a direct production hand in no less than eight of the tracks in his fifth trip. Amongst them are ‘Equinox’ and ‘Atlas’: new collabs respectively with Ferry Corsten & Copini. There are also new custom-created Down the Rabbit Hole remixes of Probspot’s ‘Blueberry’ and Rapid Eye’s ‘Circa-Forever’. He also takes another walk to the Dakota dark-side with ‘Manray’, while (echoing ISOS 18’s rocky visual aesthetic) ‘From The Ridge’ plays out another consummate Schulz summer summerizer!
In finding his own sound and groove in amongst the myriad of electronic music producers, Matt Fax is a man who’s pulled off the hardest of latter-day tricks. Getting his ISOS call-up, he codes his set-time into the titles of its bookending tracks. Commencing with/at ‘4.38 AM’, he wastes no time in working his recent revision of Gouryella’s eponymous classic. New Fax-er ‘Compass’ is quickly followed by his purpose-created remix of Kamaya Painters’ ‘Summerbreeze’. Matt proceeds to sandwich a new ISOS-themed take on his own ‘Longing’ release between Solarstone’s languid ‘island’ and the beautiful ache of Eco’s ‘Let You Down’. Giving you what he knows you want, Matt then feeds some stonecold ISOS classics into his mix. Chaining The Thrillseekers remix of Chicane’s ‘Autumn Tactics’, with ‘Eugina’ from Salt Tank, Solarstone’s Seven Cities’ and BT’s ‘Mercury & Solace’, he signs the mix off with his own sun-up track, ‘5.49 AM’
Your final dawnseeker for 2022 is Dennis Sheperd and weighing in with six of his own, he’s been burning plenty of midnight studio oil too. Amongst them as are the JES-collab’ing ‘By My Side’; his x York x Iris meet-up ‘The Fall’ and - overturing the mix - his most recent single, ‘Intouchable’. In and around those, Dennis weaves instrumental treasure like Sunny Lax’s ‘Ayahuasca’ and ‘Signal’ from Kudus. There’s plenty of vocal manna too, not least, the Diana Miro-sung ‘Too Many Games’ from Tim van Werd and his own ‘Torture’, stunningly vocalled by Mira Feder. As the mix crosses its meridian, its tone develops even more stride, as ‘All We Ever Need’ from Paul Arcane, Dennis’s mix of Minus One’s ‘As Memories Fade’ and Florida Forgotten’s ‘Without You’ all apply further surge. Signing ‘ISOS18’ off in grand style, Dennis deploys George Jema’s ‘Meet Me At Sunset’, his own ‘Break The Ice’ and DJ T.H. & Deirdre McLaughlin’s ‘Over And Over Again’ to devasting and evocative effect.
