Continuing the development of his production and sound, Adam Reece returns to Borderline with what could only be considered the perfect follow up to his last outing, Simulator which broke from both his own and Borderline’s ‘tradition’ of trance, going down the hard trance route.

Thoughts of Passion & Darkness is that suitably named follow up and what a beast it is. As hard as it is subtle and uplifting as it is melancholic, its sure to stir up what its name suggests!

[item value="10"]Adam Reece - Thoughts of Passion & Darkness [/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Adam Reece’s “Thoughts of Passion & Darkness” is brilliant trance production, offering a rich auditory experience that blends technical precision, emotional storytelling, and meticulous attention to sonic detail. Following his groundbreaking release “Simulator,” Reece continues to expand his artistic identity, venturing deeper into the hard-trance-inspired uplift while anchoring the track in classic euphoric trance roots. Operating at a consistent 138 BPM, the track maintains a propulsive rhythmic foundation. The kick is tight and forward in the mix, supported by rolling basslines that alternate between sidechained swells and staccato pulses, creating a hypnotic groove ideal for both club and festival environments. Reece employs multi-layered leads and pads, weaving bright arpeggios with lush harmonic progressions. The track’s main hook leverages a minor-to-major transition, evoking both melancholy and hope, which is a hallmark of effective trance storytelling. The arrangement demonstrates impeccable pacing. Filter sweeps, risers, and carefully automated reverb tails prepare the listener for explosive drops, while the mid-track breakdown strips the soundscape to atmospheric pads and spoken-word samples before the energy resurges. Stereo imaging is leveraged to full effect. High-frequency elements like shakers and synth sparkles dance across the panorama, while low-end content remains tight and centered. Reece employs subtle mid-side processing, enhancing the immersive depth crucial for trance’s enveloping nature. Despite its club-oriented loudness, the track preserves dynamic range in its breakdowns and bridges. The tension between quiet atmospheric moments and resurgent peaks enhances the overall emotional impact. Scientific studies indicate that trance music, with its repetitive structures and high-tempo rhythmic patterns, can positively affect mental well-being. The 138 BPM drive aligns with beta-wave brain activity, potentially enhancing focus and inducing flow states. Uplifting harmonic progressions and euphoric chord resolutions may trigger dopamine release, supporting improved mood and stress relief. Tracks like “Thoughts of Passion & Darkness” can function as a mental “reset,” helping listeners achieve heightened motivation or emotional catharsis. Adam Reece delivers a track that is as technically precise as it is emotionally resonant. From its polished production and spatial clarity to its storytelling arc and dancefloor energy, “Thoughts of Passion & Darkness” exemplifies the modern standard for trance excellence while offering tangible psychological benefits to its audience. #PureGold Love IT [/content]

[item value="10"]Grant Trowbridge - Eventide / Northern Lights[/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"] It is with great pleasure that Borderline welcomes back Grant Trowbridge for another stellar EP release, showcasing his signature flair for crafting emotionally resonant, high-energy trance masterpieces. This release features two exceptional tracks, "Eventide" and "Northern Lights," both of which are perfect additions to any uplifting trance DJ's arsenal. "Eventide" captures the essence of end-of-summer euphoria with its classic Discover-eque vibes. The track is anchored at 138 BPM, a sweet spot for trance enthusiasts, offering an energetic yet melodic drive. The production is meticulously crafted, starting with pulsating basslines that provide a solid foundation, complemented by thumping drums and metallic kicks that add a sharp, dynamic texture. The balearic-style synths are layered strategically to create nostalgic undertones, evoking memories of sun-drenched festivals and beach gatherings. A standout feature in "Eventide" is the heavenly female vocal textures, adding a magical, ethereal atmosphere. These vocals are subtly woven into the mix, enhancing the trancey feel without overwhelming the instrumental elements. The track progresses into a long, stunning dreamy breakdown, where the chord progression shines. Here, Grant employs a gradual build-up technique, with the main melodies bubbling up slowly, creating anticipation. The use of massive drumrolls before the drop effectively busts the energy wide open, leading to an epic, hands-in-the-air climax that is both emotionally stirring and sonically powerful. Following "Eventide," "Northern Lights" shifts the mood slightly with a more uplifting yet darker, metallic edge. While maintaining the 138 BPM tempo, this track introduces a tougher, punchier sound profile that contrasts beautifully with "Eventide's" softer production. The basslines are tighter, and the kicks are sharper, giving the track a driving force that is irresistible on the dance floor. The breakdown in "Northern Lights" is particularly noteworthy, featuring magnificent, lush melodies that build into truly epic synths designed to make the heart race. Grant's use of layering here is exceptional, with each synth line carefully EQ'd to maintain clarity and punch. The reintroduction of the beat after the breakdown is masterfully executed, delivering a full-on, feel-good trance experience that is both euphoric and relentless. These Tracks Are Perfect for Uplifting Trance DJs. Energy and Drive: Both tracks maintain a high energy level with their 138 BPM tempo, making them perfect for peak-time sets. Emotional Resonance: The melodic structures are crafted to evoke deep emotional responses, a key element in uplifting trance. Production Quality: Grant’s attention to detail in sound design, from the crispness of the drums to the lushness of the synths, ensures these tracks sound phenomenal on large sound systems. Versatility: While "Eventide" offers a nostalgic, feel-good vibe, "Northern Lights" provides a darker, more intense contrast, giving DJs flexibility in their set dynamics. In summary, "Eventide" and "Northern Lights" are pure gold—testaments to Grant Trowbridge's mastery in producing tracks that are not only technically impressive but also profoundly moving. Uplifting trance DJs will find these tracks invaluable for creating unforgettable moments on the dance floor. Pure Gold Love it. [/content]

Release number 123 brings a bumper pack of Activa related goodies - the Collabs & Bits EP.

To kick things off we have Delta, a track from Tom Bro, who has seen releases on the likes of Pure Trance, which was an instant signing. Hearing the potential and an underlying quality to be realised, label boss Activa got stuck into the production, adding multiple elements to bring out a different vision of the track.

Next up is another collab, this time with the formidable Luke Terry which was first aired at VII in Croatia in its early form. Since then, a few tweaks have been done to really give the track that classic Max Graham / Hope Recordings vibe from the early 00’s.

Lakota gives us number 3 of this 4 tracker - a track that sits early in a night, understated but does the job perfectly to warm people into a groove. A big bassline style riff countering airy vocals and pads makes this a solid early night progressive trancer.

Last but not least is a Deeper take on Outlander, the first track from the Tri-Series vinyl releases from back in 2020, by none other than Mac & Monday. In his unmistakable style, Norbert carves out a groove laden subtle and progressive monster to lose yourself to.

1. Activa & Tom Bro - Delta (Extended Mix)
2. Activa & Luke Terry - Pandemonium (Extended Mix)
3. Activa - Lakota (Extended Mix)
4. Activa - Outlander (Mac & Monday Extended Remix)

Undulatus Asparatus unfolds as an expansive, nearly nine-minute sonic journey that showcases a masterful layering of tribal-inspired, bouncy percussion and deep, pulsating basslines. The production shines through its intricate balance between rhythmic intensity and melodic serenity. The pounding basslines are crafted with precision, employing sidechain compression techniques that ensure a dynamic, breathing texture, perfectly complementing the punchy, well-EQ’d kick drum that anchors the track. The melodic arrangement features warm analog synths, rich in harmonic content, layered with delicately processed piano chords that add an emotional depth. It’s a proud day when Borderline can bring a brand new Coredata track and his latest piece of art entitled Kaleidoscope Skies is here!

Originally written for a now shelved Movement 2 compilation, Kaleidoscope Skies was immediately impactful with that signature Coredata (almost Platipus-esque) sound; a mixture of 909 bassline loveliness and ethereal twinkling synths.

Helping Borderline keep that breadth of trance styles Coredata delivers again.

[item value="10"]Coredata - Kaleidoscope Skies[/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Coredata's "Kaleidoscope Skies" is a testament to his evolving artistry, showcasing a meticulous blend of technical prowess and nostalgic influences. Clocking in at 132 BPM, this trance masterpiece opens with a distinctive breakbeat intro, setting an engaging rhythmic foundation. The breakbeat is crafted using crisp, syncopated drum patterns layered with subtle hi-hat shuffles, establishing an immediate dynamic energy that contrasts beautifully with the smoother elements to follow. As the track transitions into the main body, it introduces chunky grooves underpinned by a wonky, driving bassline. This bassline employs a sawtooth wave processed through a mild distortion unit, giving it a gritty texture that complements the punchy, side-chained kicks. The percussive elements are meticulously EQ'd to occupy their own space, with sharp claps and hi-hats providing a crisp counterpoint to the deeper bass frequencies. Voice effects, treated with reverb and delay, add an ethereal quality, enhancing the track's atmospheric depth. One of the standout technical features is the dreamy, synthy plucks that evoke a sense of wistful nostalgia. These plucks are generated using a virtual analog synthesizer, modulated with LFOs to create a subtle vibrato effect, adding emotional resonance. The track pays homage to the Platipus era of UK trance from the early 2000s, evident in its melodic structure and sound design. The warm, melodic breakdown employs lush pad layers, crafted with granular synthesis techniques to give them a rich, evolving texture. This section also features a variety of sampled voices, pitch-shifted and time-stretched to create a haunting, otherworldly ambiance. Post-breakdown, "Kaleidoscope Skies" reintroduces its core motif with acid-like hypnotic layers. These are achieved through the use of a resonant 303-style filter sweep, creating that signature squelchy sound synonymous with classic acid trance. The background ambience remains a consistent thread, woven with reverb-drenched synth pads and field recordings that add a natural, organic feel. The final section features a cleverly crafted breaks segment, providing a rhythmic respite that allows listeners to "float" within the track's magical soundscape. This section utilizes reverse reverb effects and gated reverb snares, enhancing the dreamlike quality. Coredata’s adept handling of production techniques not only revives the golden era of trance but also injects a modern sensibility, making "Kaleidoscope Skies" a track that resonates both technically and emotionally. #PureGold Indeed. [item value="10"]AA Meeting - Flashback [/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]AA Meeting, the dynamic collaboration between trance legends John Askew and Activa, showcases an exceptional blend of technical prowess and creative flair in their track "Flashback." Operating at a vigorous 142 BPM, this uplifting instrumental trance masterpiece exemplifies meticulous production techniques and a masterful grasp of sonic architecture. From a technical perspective, "Flashback" is anchored by its robust arrangement and immersive sound design. The foundation is laid with energetic, pulsating basslines crafted through precise sidechain compression, ensuring they maintain a rhythmic synergy with the track's thumping kicks. These kicks, likely enhanced with layered samples and subtle transient shaping, provide a driving force that underscores the track's relentless energy. The percussion elements, including the pounding drums, are meticulously processed with high-pass filtering and reverb automation to create spatial depth and dynamic movement. The melancholic piano melody that leads the track introduces an emotional nuance, its reverb-drenched timbre intertwining seamlessly with the underlying acid overtones. These acid lines, likely generated using classic analog synths with resonant filter tweaks and modulation envelopes, inject a raw, hypnotic edge that contrasts beautifully with the melodic components. As the track progresses, big swirling synths come into play, constructed through layered oscillator stacks and complex modulation matrices. These synths build tension and anticipation, employing techniques like filter sweeps, LFO-driven panning, and gradual reverb decay reduction to heighten intensity. The breakdown stands out for its extended, atmospheric quality, featuring a rich tapestry of synthy plucks and airy harps. The plucks, possibly achieved with subtractive synthesis and careful envelope shaping, provide a crisp, ethereal texture. The harps add a delicate, whimsical touch, enhanced by lush reverb tails and stereo widening effects. This section masterfully builds towards the climax, utilizing crescendoing white noise sweeps, pitch risers, and strategic silence to amplify the eventual drop. The climax itself is a payoff of epic proportions, designed for that quintessential "hands in the air" moment. Borderline’s leading producer of the more ‘modern’ trance that the label releases, brings us a solid EP with Stardust and Hong Lim Park.

Stardust is what you’d expect from Grant, solid production, almost Discover-esque theme and a catchy melody, while Hong Lim Park brings out a more stripped side of Grant's style, more akin to early 00’s stripped back van Dyk productions.

Some may recognise the latter as it saw its debut in the AA Meeting set from Transmission, Bangkok, albeit via an Activa Rework which gave the main elements a bit of a shuffle!

A heavy weight EP from Grant and we love it!

[item value="10"]Grant Trowbridge - Stardust / Hong Lim Park [/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Grant Trowbridge's latest offerings on the Borderline label are a testament to his exceptional production skills and technical expertise in the realm of trance music. Both tracks, with their 138 BPM tempo, are crafted to perfection, embodying the spirit of uplifting trance and showcasing Trowbridge’s mastery over sound design and arrangement. Beginning with "Stardust," Trowbridge takes listeners on an otherworldly journey. The track is anchored by pulsating basslines and metallic kicks, creating a solid rhythmic foundation. The pounding drums drive the energy forward while expansive melodies weave through the soundscape. The breakdown in "Stardust" is a standout feature, rich with intricate elements that provide a spiritually uplifting experience. The inclusion of an excellent spoken female vocal sample adds depth and context, building anticipation until the track reaches its euphoric climax. In this section, Trowbridge’s expertise shines as he blends melodic, spacious, and sparkling elements, crafting a sound full of depth and energy that captivates and energizes the listener.
The second track, "Hong Lim Park," pays homage to the classic trance sounds of the early 2000s while infusing Trowbridge’s modern touch. It begins with a solid foundation of pounding drums and energetic basslines, complemented by elastic kicks that add a dynamic bounce. The breakdown is meticulously arranged with a variety of ethereal synth plucks, building tension and anticipation. As the track progresses, it transitions into a tech trance-focused section, where more subliminal melodies emerge, leading the track into its energetic phase. Trowbridge's adeptness at layering these elements results in a track that is both nostalgically reminiscent and refreshingly innovative. Overall, Grant Trowbridge’s tracks are not just a demonstration of his technical prowess but also reflect his deep understanding of the trance genre. They are expertly designed to engage listeners, keeping them immersed in a sonic journey that is both exhilarating and deeply fulfilling. These tracks are indeed #PureGold and a must-listen for any trance aficionado. Love IT [/content]

Hot on the heels of Luke Terrys impressive Deep Space which featured on the Universe EP and supported by many, including Armin who referenced the return of classic styled trance, is a track equally as impressive. Magik Epoch as the name may suggest to some harks back to that time again but with a modern flavour, very much in the vein of Deep Space. While Deep Space had some big Ferry and VdM flavours, Magik Epoch has classic Tiesto vibes. Massive track!
