The groundbreaking orchestral project redefines musical boundaries by merging the high-energy pulse of electronic dance music (EDM) with the refined elegance of classical symphony.

Conceived by the creative visionaries behind Tomorrowland, Symphony of Unity first captivated audiences in 2015 during the festival’s “Secret Kingdom of Melodia” edition. Since then, it has evolved into a globally celebrated experience that unites diverse audiences through the universal language of music.

Featuring an ensemble of approximately 50 world-class musicians, the orchestra reimagines iconic electronic tracks through rich, cinematic orchestral arrangements. The project bridges generational and cultural divides, resonating with both EDM fans and classical music enthusiasts alike.

Among the highlights is “Insomnia” by Faithless, a timeless anthem that defined a generation of electronic music lovers. Equally legendary is “Universal Nation” by Push, widely regarded as one of the most influential trance tracks ever produced and a cornerstone of Belgium’s electronic music heritage. The album also features “All That Matters” by Kölsch, Troels Abrahamsen and ARTBAT, a modern melodic masterpiece celebrated for its atmospheric depth and emotional storytelling. Another standout is “In My Mind” by Ivan Gough, Feenixpawl, Georgi Kay, and Axwell, a global festival favorite known for its powerful vocals and euphoric energy. Also featured is ‘Mammoth’ by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and MOGUAI, an unmistakable Tomorrowland anthem that has electrified main stages worldwide.
“Recording this album with the Symphony of Unity has been an incredible journey. By adding a breathing, cinematic orchestral layer, the music gains a new emotional depth while bringing these legendary tracks into the world of a full orchestra. This album celebrates the music itself, the friendships within the orchestra and the team behind it, and the shared passion that allows these iconic tracks to be experienced in a completely new way." - Kevin Houben, Symphony of Unity Conductor
More than a musical performance, Symphony of Unity embodies values of diversity, inclusion, and collective empowerment. Each show invites audiences into a shared emotional journey, transforming concerts into immersive artistic experiences.

In 2024, Symphony of Unity returned triumphantly to Tomorrowland’s Freedom Stage, delivering a record-breaking performance with the largest crowd in the stage’s history, with similarly impressive audience numbers recorded again in 2025. This milestone underscored the project’s growing international appeal and its status as a festival highlight.

With performances across Belgium, Amsterdam, Dubai, Las Vegas and Brazil, Symphony of Unity continues to expand its global footprint. The release of Orchestral Selection I marks a significant new chapter, bringing its signature sound to audiences worldwide. As Symphony of Unity prepares for future world tours, the ensemble continues to inspire audiences across continents.

With Orchestral Selection I, the project reaffirms its mission: proving that music knows no boundaries.

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Armin van Buuren’s “Sonic Samba (Rising Star Remix)” is a masterclass in euphoric trance production. The track takes the intimate piano-driven soul of the original “Sonic Samba” from the Piano album and elevates it into a powerful 142 BPM trance anthem. Its rich piano melody merges seamlessly into a high-energy rhythmic framework, creating an immediate emotional connection. The remix excels in rhythm, groove, and drive, with crisp kick drums, rolling basslines, and syncopated percussion that lock in perfectly for dance floor momentum. From a technical perspective, the melodic hooks and harmonic layers are meticulously arranged. Rising Star employs lush pads, soaring leads, and harmonically tuned arpeggios that support the main piano motif. The transitions, drops, and build-ups are crafted using subtle filter sweeps, reverb tails, and stereo imaging techniques. Each drop is preceded by tension-building risers and perfectly timed snare rolls, creating a euphoric release that defines uplifting trance. Energy flow and momentum remain consistent, owing to careful automation of velocity and EQ, while sound design leverages modern VST synths layered with subtle analog warmth for a polished yet emotive result. Production quality is top-tier. The mix demonstrates excellent dynamic range and loudness balance, allowing the track to feel powerful without over-compression. The spatial design is immersive, with reverb-drenched atmospheres and panning effects that create a three-dimensional sonic experience. Cue points and loop potential are thoughtfully embedded for DJs, and the intro/outro structure makes the track highly suitable for both club and festival sets. Beyond the dance floor, “Sonic Samba (Rising Star Remix)” has notable impacts on mental health and wellness. Scientific research suggests that high-energy music at 120–145 BPM can enhance physical performance, mood, and motivation in fitness and wellness classes (Karageorghis & Priest, 2012). Uplifting trance, with its positive harmonic progressions, has been linked to increased dopamine release, which promotes a sense of euphoria and reduces stress (Salimpoor et al., 2011). The melodic structure and rhythmic drive of this track make it ideal for aerobic workouts, yoga flow sessions with dynamic pacing, or even as a mood booster during daily routines. The emotional resonance of the track is undeniable. By preserving the soulful essence of the original and amplifying it through Rising Star’s signature uplifting trance style, Armin van Buuren delivers a euphoric journey that enhances both the mind and body. The creative cohesion, storytelling, and artistic identity of this remix set it apart as a memorable addition to any trance enthusiast’s playlist. #PureGold Love iT [/content]

Critical Acclaim

Early reactions to Piano have praised its emotional depth and artistic bravery. Zane Lowe called it “a beautiful album,” while Jack Pepper of Magic Classical, UK described it as “a classical curveball.” EDM Nomad hailed it as “deeply human, born from reflection,” and “an invitation to experience Armin van Buuren’s quietest and most sincere moments”. EDM.com said: “The compositions move with a cinematic sense of pacing and purpose.”

An Exclusive Prelude on Apple Music

Ahead of the album’s wide release, Piano launched exclusively on Apple Music and Apple Music Classical as part of a unique partnership. The announcement was celebrated with a surprise in-store performance at Apple’s Leidseplein store in Amsterdam, followed by a panel and playback session at Dolby Atmos House, both held during Amsterdam Dance Event. The reflective tone of the album was first introduced during Armin’s in-depth conversation with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, where he described Piano as “a return to stillness.” Watch the full interview here

A Journey from Heart, to Keys, to Ears

Far from being a departure from his electronic roots, Piano emphasizes the classical influences that have long shaped Armin’s sound. His music is deeply rooted in a lifelong connection to classical tradition —nurtured by a piano-playing father and an early immersion in composers whose works instilled in him a lasting respect for melody, harmony, and structure.

What began as a decade-long pursuit to learn piano—initially intended to enrich his electronic work and support his mental well-being—evolved into a creative journey of its own. Growing bored of playing existing scores, Armin began composing his own melodies, which later developed into fully realized pieces under the mentorship of classically trained composer Geronimo Snijtsheuvel.
Armin van Buuren says: “Creating melodies behind the piano has always been the foundation of my music. Together with my teacher Geronimo, sketches grew into fifteen pure pieces, free from beats. This project shows another side of me: intimate, honest, direct. My roots lie in a home filled with classical, rock, and electronic music, shaped by my father, brother, and artists like Vangelis and The Orb. After decades of trance and festivals, I longed for music without pressure — just fingers on keys. In 2025, I recorded everything in one take at ConcertLab. This album is my most personal work: from heart, to keys, to ears.”
Recorded in One Take

Recorded and filmed at ConcertLab — the world’s first purpose-built filming studio dedicated to Fine Arts Music — in Utrecht in early 2025, Piano was captured over seven days, with each performance recorded in a single take and mixed in Dolby Atmos®. The album features van Buuren performing both solo and with guest musicians, including cellist collaborators and a chamber orchestra led by renowned violinist Lisa Jacobs.

In addition to original compositions, Armin revisits one of his all-time favorite trance classics — ‘Children’ by Robert Miles — reimagined as a solo piano piece that bridges his electronic roots with his classical sensibilities.

Each Note Tells a Story

Each composition on Piano is inspired by a feeling, emotion, moment, or person(s) deeply important to Armin, including his family — his wife, Erika, his father, his brother — as well as the natural world. The album translates these memories and emotions into piano-driven narratives. The first piece Armin composed for the project, ‘Fathers & Sons’, set the tone for the album and inspired him to continue in a similar emotional vein.

This year’s Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) will open with ‘Scripted Orkestra’, a collaboration between the acclaimed producer/composer/performer Henrik Schwarz and the world’s leading non-classical orchestra Metropole Orkest. The event will take place in the Melkweg on October 19th and will mark the musical opening of ADE 2016. Tickets go on sale on Saturday 23 April.

Although this is the first time Metropole Orkest will perform at ADE, they are no strangers to creating symbioses between orchestral and dance music. In the past they’ve worked with Basement Jaxx, Junkie XL and more recently with Squarepusher. Schwarz on the other hand, is an ADE regular. Over the past few years he has taken the stage at the Concertgebouw, Q&A'd at the Sonos Studio and performed at the Muziekgebouw with Dan Berglund and Bugge Wesseltoft.

Henrik Schwarz has worked with orchestras before, but he expects this particular experience to be very different. “So far I have only worked with ensembles who mostly play classical music. Metropole Orkest plays jazz and pop and I am sure they will also be able to play techno and electronic-inspired music,” he says. “It’s important that the musicians are experienced at playing music that is syncopated.”

Henrik Schwarz will be composing an hour of new music for the project. Metropole Orkest chief conductor Jules Buckley will be his right hand man, helping Schwarz to realize this musical vision through proper orchestral scoring and detailed feedback. “Our first meeting was in a coffee bar in Berlin,” Buckley said. “And we were mainly looking to see if there was common ground to do something cool together. We had not met before but I know his music pretty well. His album ‘Instruments’, created an awareness amongst a very broad audience and the buzz from that drew me in further.” Schwarz adds: “The sources for Instruments were electronic tracks that I had made over the years. This time it will be all new music written just for this project. Jules has encouraged me to really challenge the orchestra, and he is open to everything. He has full understanding of how an orchestra works, but also knows a lot about dance music, and where I come from.”

The end result will be a true collaboration instead of just an orchestra playing dance music. Henrik: “If you listen to what Metropole Orkest has done before you can hear an open-mindedness that is absolutely necessary when you want to create something new.” Jules adds: “Both Henrik and the Metropole Orkest are fully committed to pushing boundaries in everything we do. We are excited to work with Henrik, his forthright and open approach to making new music makes this the perfect match.”

Countless, widely heard remix productions for a Who’s Who of the international dance scene have ensued, making their way into DJ charts.
