The Welsh music producer and mixer’s portfolio includes a diverse range of artists from Frank Ocean to Weval.

No matter how much talent you may have, and how original your songs are, you still need to find yourself a producer, preferably a very good one, and someone who can master a track brilliantly in order to have a chance of scoring a hit. Which is why this year's ADE Sound Lab is going to focus on the fine arts of production, mastering and sound engineering.

Last year Luca Pretolesi demonstrated how he mastered David Guetta’s ‘Goodbye. The first speaker  announced for 2019 is Welsh producer/mixer David Wrench. Based in London, Wrench has worked with some of the world’s most innovative and influential artists including ex-Talking Heads singer and composer David Byrne, The xx, Frank Ocean, Caribou, Sampha, Goldfrapp, Let’s Eat Grandma and Weval. His work regularly garners awards and nominations e.g Grammy’s, Mercury Music Prize, Brit Awards and MPG Award.

Wrench has worked on chart-topping albums in both the UK and the US, and also recently released his own artist project ‘audiobooks’ - debut album ’Now (in a minute!).

Day, time and venue for session to be announced.

ADE Sound Lab
ADE Sound Lab features intimate and revealing talks with major figures from the electronic scene, with formats such as ADE MusicTalks, The Record Bag Of... and Studio XL. The inaugural ADE University edition of the mini-mentor program for five young female professionals, selected by ADE and shesaid.so, was very well received by both mentors and mentees and will make its way back into the 2019 ADE program.

In this follow-up about She.Grows, the mini-mentor program that took place as part of ADE University 2018, Haarlem based International Music Management student Kaari Tõke was partnered with mentor Tamar Tieleman, marketeer at Melkweg.
"I saw the opportunity to take part in this project 4 hours before the deadline. When I saw who our potential mentors could be, I didn’t hesitate at all to apply. (...) My main hope for the day was that I could ask about her past and how she started as a drama student to work in marketing. And also get to know her on a more personal level. I swear the first time she or I swore in front of each other all the walls came crumbling down."
For Tieleman it was also an interesting opportunity:
"It’s just an honour that Kaari read into my work as much, and I really love that now she has several meetings with awesome companies that would suit her personality well. I think that’s the biggest gift you can give and receive: To connect like-minded people to each other. Not just for Kaari, but also my friends who I know I’ve passed on a valuable possible employer. On both ends it saves so much time going through bad experiences. It’s very rewarding to be a link in that."
Tõke: "I got so much advice from her, regarding my next steps in becoming woman working in the music industry. She told me that it is important to show up to places and always be yourself because that’s the most important thing. She also told me to say yes to different offers or be open to them. All in all, me and Tamar will be in contact for sure so I can always ask her for advice if I need it.
Tieleman: "I enjoyed meeting Kaari, and really wanted to set her up with some people as she is so driven and captivating. But the network event I took her to was very busy and I felt like she deserved more attention from me. Therefore I think our contact via text and meeting each other was best; we really had one on one time and I knew exactly who to let her get in contact with. What I love about Kaari is her drive, her enthusiasm and humour. She came into the breakfast extremely well prepared and was really able to show herself with confidence. She reminded me of myself and how I used to be when I started out and she really reminded me to never lose that flame."
Both Tieleman and Tõke definitely enjoyed the whole experience: "I think the most important thing that I learned was that I’m on the right track. It is so uplifting to hear it from a person who has done all of it what I am at the moment. She was also the first person to acknowledge my interest in the event management what my future in Amsterdam could be. (...) Also, I didn’t expect to get so close to her. I was so beyond happy how after half an hour of meeting each other she suggested someone I should meet and she delivered: she did not let me down! I had a meeting with Maarten, her husband in the ID&T offices in A’dam Tower. It was such an amazing meeting, I felt like I learned more from him in two hours that I have in two years in my studies. Also, I met Phil Horneman, the Wicked Jazz party owner and we are good friends now!"
Tieleman  "I think it’s great if you can help someone get to where you are via an easier road. You’ve paved it, give them access."

To stimulate innovation in the dance and festival scene, DGTL, ADE and the Tech & Dance Collective joined forces again to organize the third ADE Hackathon. As technology is at the core of electronic music, these three parties acknowledge that there is much to discover on how festival organizers, artists, labels and any other player in the music industry can use data and technology to grow, innovate and do new creative stuff. At the ADE Hackathon, developers, designers, entrepreneurs and other creative minds were asked to think about the challenges that are faced by the dance and festival scene, but also to think about the opportunities that data and technology provide. A group of 100 selected bright minds were invited to develop smart concepts, new apps and inspiration within a challenging timespan of 24 hours.

We visited Label A & Bynder at Max Euweplein 46 and we experience the positive atmosphere and the superb conditions under which ADE Hackathon was running under the co-ordination of Maarten Greve who was so polite to offer us some of his precious time to talk to us about ADE Hackathon and explain to us what this particular Hackathon involved plus he explained the themes that creative minds had to service with their innovative ideas. Thanks to Maarten for his time!

The DJ Mag Top 100 DJs Poll results are in. Dutch DJ/Producer Martin Garrix has retained the crown of ‘World’s No.1 DJ’ for a third consecutive year, since becoming the youngest ever to be voted the World’s No.1 DJ back in 2016.

In aid of UNICEF, the 2018 edition of Top 100 DJs marks the 25th anniversary of the globally celebrated poll. This year saw record numbers of voters with in excess of 1.2 million verified votes received, an increase of nearly 200,000 on 2017 being submitted during the 3 month campaign period — making it the biggest publicly-voted music poll in the world.

Martin Garrix received the award at the official DJ Mag Top 100 DJs Awards ceremony during Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE). The show took place at the Johan Cruijff Arena in front of a sold-out capacity crowd of 35,000 fans as part of the Amsterdam Music Festival (AMF), an initiative of ALDA Events and ID&T.

Few can argue about the irrefutable global reach of one of dance music’s most revered stars. The meteoric rise of the Dutch superstar Martin Garrix’s career has been nothing short of breathtaking, with the past 12 months being perhaps his finest year yet. Whether it’s with hit singles that include ‘So Far Away’ with David Guetta and ‘Ocean’ featuring Khalid, to his globetrotting touring diary that puts him at the top of the bill for the biggest festivals and events on the planet from Tomorrowland to Creamfields, to appearing at the Winter Olympic Games in South Korea or supporting popstar Justin Bieber on tour, the young Dutch native is rarely out of the public eye. This win means Martin Garrix becomes only the third DJ to have recorded three Top 100 DJs wins, aligning him with previous winners and fellow Dutch DJs Tiësto (3x) and Armin van Buuren (5x).

Other high entries in the 2018 Top100 DJs Poll includeTomorrowland residents and Belgian brothers Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike who are a non-mover at #2 and again scooped the award for ‘Highest Group’. Trance don Armin van Buuren slipped one place, behind Hardwell [#3], to #4 but claims once more the category for ‘Highest Trance’artist. David Guetta [#5], Tiësto [#6], Don Diablo (‘Highest Future House’) [#7], Afrojack [#8], Oliver Heldens [#9] and Marshmello [#10] make up the remaining positions of the Top 10.

Australian sisters NERVO, are up 15 places to #27 this year, making them the highest ranked female DJs in the ranking. Next to them is hardstyle pioneer Headhunterz, who claimed the ‘Highest Hard’ award by landing at #28. This year’s ‘Highest Climber, powered by Beat Fever’ accolade goes to the Israeli psytrance duo Vini Vici [#34] who have made an undeniable mark on the festival circuit this past year.

Martin Garrix is the number 1 DJ for 3rd year

A former No.1 DJ himself and still the reigning lord of the underground, Carl Cox is up 9 places at #53 and wins the ‘Highest Techno’ award this year. Melodic masked marauderClaptone was a new entry in the 2017 poll but is up 12 places this year landing at #57 and once again winning the ‘Highest House’ award. The reunion of EDM’s best-loved collective certainly didn’t go unnoticed by voters as the Swedish House Mafia claimed #63, earning the ‘Highest Re-entry’ award. Individually the Swedes also ranked at #58 (Steve Angello) and #41 (Axwell Λ Ingrosso).

With new entries from Breathe Carolina [#77], Adam Beyer [#79], Marco Carola [#86], Cedric Gervais [#87], to female artists being represented by artists such as MATTN #72 who won ‘Highest New Entry’, Nina Kravis [#97] and Alison Wonderland [#96], this year’s poll once again represents a varied selection of popular electronic music genres from house and big room EDM to techno and trance, as well as psy-trance to progressive house and drum & bass and hardstyle, with the inclusion of artists from countries as far and wide as Australia, Guatemala, Brazil, China plus many more.

The territory that yielded the highest number of votes was again the USA, with the UK, Brazil and Mexico ranking next, closely followed by the central European countries of Italy, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Spain. Following the widening of the voting process using a 2FA SMS login option for markets without Facebook, there was a 28% increase in votes from China. This has undoubtedly helped the top two Chinese DJs — Carta [#73] and DJ L [#84] — climb 19 and 14 places respectively, while other areas in Asia— including Japan, Vietnam and Thailand — all saw similar increases.

Receiving votes from 179 countries, the Top100DJs is a definitive annual guide to the world's most popular DJs and a living symbol of the strength and diversity of the global electronic music scene.  In ongoing efforts to build on the diversity of the poll, DJ Mag has partnered with Beatport who co-presented a Beatport Breakthrough Award, which was won by Brazillian DJ, ANNA. In the following weeks, DJ Mag & Beatport will announce the Alternative Top 100 DJs results, to highlight DJs from genres traditionally on the periphery of the global poll.

Top100DJs has always had charity beneficiaries, however, 2017 was a major escalation that saw UNICEF elevated to headline status. The partnership raised a total of £30,000, including a personal donation of £10,000 by DJ Mag. The fundraising for the 2018 campaign is on track to beat the previous total, with the full amount to be announced next month.

UNICEF works in more than 190 countries and ensures more of the world’s children are vaccinated, educated and protected than any other organisation. Through the power and unity of music, the money raised through the Top100DJs Poll will support UNICEF to vaccinate children to protect them from deadly disease, provide life-saving food for malnourished children, train teachers and provide education, protect vulnerable children from violence and abuse and deliver humanitarian aid for children in danger from war and disaster around the world.
