01. John Askew & Shelby Merry – Wild Horse (Extended Mix)
02. John Askew & Shelby Merry - Wild Horse (Siskin Remix)

‘Wild Horse’ is John Askew’s latest collaboration with Shelby Merry and the final single to be released ahead of ‘A Room Full Of Pros And Cons’ - his hotly anticipated third longform. Also taking the role of the album’s swansong finale, comparative to anything John’s released before ‘Wild Horse’ is a markedly different animal ...

Seasoned JA watchers will immediately sense the change in gear, tone and intent: somewhat akin to an out of body experience for the English producer. ‘Wild Horse’s intense, humid atmospheres haze the studio’s windows, as its beats kick with a slower, more brooding resonance. Around them artfully drawn strings, celestially streaming fx and the most casual or breakbeat loops all raise its pressure. Think mid-nineties Massive Attack, with heavier drums and you’re not far from the mark.

Having previously cut her teeth on ‘Steady & Stronger’ and ‘When Darkness Comes’, Nashville’s Shelby Merry is already a thoroughbred Askew collaborator. ‘Wild Horse’ may be a case of ‘saving the best (or at least most intense!) till last’. From the opposing perspective she relates a tale of deception, gaslighting and mindgames, baring her soul to convey real world conversations and experiences. Contrastingly, she shares her story of ‘girl-meets-wrong-boy’, leaving it up to the audience to conclude who’s saying what - and to what end.

John deferred on the remix, passing ‘Wild Horse’s reins to an outfit eminently capable of handling complex lyrics (you could even say they’ve built a career on it!). For something as intimate as ‘Wild Horse’, progressive forms the perfect bedrock, which is exactly what Sue and Suzanne supply. Drum roll, pulsing LFO, reverb-heavy percussion, raincry harmonies and Siskin’s fluid melodies all lend Shelby’s song a curiously optimistic filter.

John’s Original ‘Wild Horse’ arrived on the 9th HERE, while Siskin’s club orientation lands one week later on Aug 16 HERE. ‘A Room Full Of Pros & Cons’ will be released 27th Sept. 2024 and you can pre-order here

[item value="10"]John Askew & Shelby Merry - Wild Horse (Original & Siskin Remix) [/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]John Askew & Shelby Merry collaborate for the stunning track Wild Horse. The original is a stunning breaks anthem with dark moody atmosphere and the fantastic indie rock magical voice by Shelby. The result is a winner that will manage easily to carry your mind away and appreciate the superb story that the emotional lyrics describe with so much power, dynamism and intensity.  Siskin are the beloved female duo that always impress with her productions and their remix is coolest version that you didn't expect to get. Rather than the full on tech trance remix, Siskin add their flirting melodic progressive touch that moves in and out of trance and house with cool dark melodic techno dystopian synthy lines leading to the euphoric feeling free type of climax that floats so beautifully and encourage you to let the inhibitions and adopt your hidden free spirit. #PureGold Love IT [/content]

18 months is all it’s taken for Siskin to have gone from here-and-there … to pretty much everywhere. They’ve brought shows, sets, singles and EPs to all four corners, but what you haven’t yet heard from the duo is a fully-fledged album ... So let’s do something about that!

In its fullness, ‘We Are Siskin’ might go down as the perfect longplaying debut; one without a vocal, lyric, arrangement or note even remotely out of place. That’s entirely due to the extraordinary artistic connection shared by Sue McLaren and Suzanne Chesterton. It’s one that saw them define their sound with their very first release and then emphasize it with every one that’s followed!

At Siskin’s heart lies a kindred sistership, however there’s also an innate ‘oneness’ to the group. A dynamic where both Sue and Suzanne each hold the necessary DJing, singing, songwriting and studio skillset equally. Amongst others, ‘We Are Siskin’ contains the ASOT100-wowing singles ‘Always You’, ‘Let Go’, ‘Villaneve’ and ‘Rest Of My Days’, as well as brand new gems, ‘Forever Gold’ and ‘Atari’.

‘We Are Siskin’ arrives today!

Setting Siskin further apart is the mastered art of studio duality, where progressive texture is initially emphasised over tenacity, before its wonderfully camouflaged floor-shifting elements fully pop on clubbier systems. (Café del Mar up top, Amnesia underneath, if you will!) This has allowed one track after another to cross mightily from radio to clubfloor, (in turn playing a considerable part in turbocharging their behind-decks activities).

More than any other aspect though is the deeply affecting nature of their music – as creative, balanced and introspective as any in 2023. The meaning behind some of Siskin’s lyrics is manifestly clear, with tracks like ‘Fly Away’, ‘Let Go’, ‘Rest Of My Days’, ‘Are We Dreaming’ being as fathomable as they are relatable. However other themes (most notably on ‘Nobody Loves Me’ and ‘Can You Feel It’), are far more nuanced than their titles suggest. Deeper yet, ‘Villaneve’, ‘Atari’, ‘Forever Gold’ and ‘Electric Love’ are outright opaque, imperceptibly encouraging ever-closer reflexion from the listener. ‘We Are Siskin’ though has implication burnt into every word … and that’s ultimately decide if their LP debut is indeed … perfect.
Says Siskin, of their road to the album, “over the past six years, life has pulled us both in so many different directions with family, work commitments and obstacles like the COVID Pandemic and living over 120 miles away from each other, but our strong passion and belief in each other have really propelled us to this point. Since we first met in the greenroom of a trance night back in 2017, never could we ever have imagined that our initial connection would eventually lead to the creation of our debut album and all the laughs, tears and elation we’d have on the way… it’s been a heck of a journey so far and this is only the beginning!”

Black Hole Recordings are proud to present an album from a multitalented group that puts progress into the Progressive. You can find ‘We Are Siskin’ here.

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Siskin is a great project with a lot of potential and their strength is evident in their incredible remix of the BT track Kintsugi taken out from the Metaverse album. Their remix makes excellent application of the original elements turned into a melodic deep progressive house beauty that builds beautifully full of nice melodic layers and whispery female vocals that enhanced the message of the track even more. Bubbly deep pulsating basslines, driving atmosphere, eclectic melodic elements and cinematic strings that are so infectious and simply irresistible for dancefloors or home listening. This is just the perfect 2023 start for Siskin. #PureGold Love iT[/content]

Siskin, the all-singing/spinning/songwriting sistership of Sue McLaren and Suzanne Chesterton, sign off their second 2022 EP. And if there wasn’t quite enough ‘S’s in a sentence for you … well here’s another! ‘Seratonin’, the EP from which it’s all come has had one central theme, and that’s concerned matters of the heart. Following the progressively hypnotic ‘Always You’, ‘Nobody Loves Me’ and its thematic expansion ‘Piece Of My Love’, the EPs rounded off by feelings of an even more thought provoking nature ...

Siskin’s ‘Deeper Love’ completes ‘Seratonin’ today.

Scratch beneath its surface and you’ll see that Sue and Suzanne have done something both remarkably smart, but also remarkably balanced with the EP. While ‘Nobody’ and ‘Piece’ speak to its subject’s numerous upsides, both musically and lyrically, ‘Deeper Love’ heads further down ‘Always You’s not quite so sanguine road.

Its words speak to the pitfalls – both perceived and actual – of a relationship where emotions run unchecked … and feelings might just be out of control. “Can we survive a deeper love?” its song contemplates … and it’s a provocative question at that. Siskin mirrors the feel of the music with pensive breakbeats, mournful horns and equally brooding piano lines, while their gently modulating pads & chords hint at the hope of a rescued outcome.

A force to be reckoned with, Siskin wraps up the ‘Serotonin EP’ with ‘Deeper Love’ today. Find it through all good sales and streaming channels here

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Siskin is definitely a duo that manage to attract the attention of the electronic music community straight away. With progressive house sensibilities and trance melodies their EP is a noteworthy sonic experience. Deeper Love moves on the same direction with deep pulsating basslines, dark moody atmosphere and great ethereal piano melodies. The breakdown includes a tripping out breaks section with the brilliant vocals until to move again in the climax that will please with its hypnotic melodies and whispering dark vocals that sounds like coming from the very depth of the ocean or even from faraway galaxies. Quality single to wrap up the must play EP. #PureGold Love IT [/content]

As artists in their own right, Sue McLaren and Suzanne Chesterton have covered a good deal of stylistic ground. However, as Siskin, they’ve shaped, focused and honed that into their artistic quintessence … And what’s more they’ve done it all in a little over 12 months, and - as of today - 7 singles.

So complete and well-defined is that sound, that it would be almost indecent to wonder if the bar can be raised! Judge for yourself as, after ‘Nobody Loves Me’ and its thematic expansion ‘Piece Of My Love’, Siskin sign off their ‘Seratonin EP’ with ‘Always You’.

Naturally, ‘Always’ is every bit as production-rich and infinitesimally blissed-out as Siskin’s six previous for Black Hole. Every listen after your first though brings its subtle sub-tone that much closer to the sonic fore. Behind the warmly wistful feel of its vocals and ‘Always You’s sanguine title lies its true meaning, which is lyrically related in a laid-bare, openhanded manner. Mirroring it, its production also shifts almost imperceptibly from the trance left-foot to the progressive right. Its percussion and bass emphasis expands, bringing with it a track you could happily (and hypnotically!) listen to on-loop all day long.

Combining forces to become a sum greater than their parts, Siskin deliver their supremely immersive and endlessly replayable ‘Always You’ today. Find it through all good sales and streaming platforms here.
