‘Sound of You’ features vocals from Pendulum frontman Rob Swire, drops today on Armada Music
Pioneering drum-and-bass metal band Pendulum and legendary trance DJ and producer Armin van Buuren have joined forces for their debut collaboration, ‘Sound of You,’ out today on Armada Music. This high-voltage drum-and-bass festival weapon was crafted during a joint studio session in early 2024, later debuting at Tomorrowland Belgium 2024, and stands out as a rare dance linkup for Pendulum, who have recently been focused on their live music setup.
The collaboration stemmed from a shared admiration between the artists. Initially, ‘Sound of You’ started as a big room progressive house track penned by Armin van Buuren, featuring Pendulum’s Rob Swire on vocals—marking Swire’s first feature in several years—which was released last month. Inspired by their shared creative energy, Armin van Buuren suggested developing a drum-and-bass version together with Pendulum—an idea that quickly took shape in the studio.
Rob Swire, frontman of Pendulum, reflected on the collaboration: “Armin and I had talked about working together for a while. When he played me the original ‘Sound of You,’ I knew instantly I wanted to sing on it. After that, Armin suggested doing a drum-and-bass version, and he had so many great ideas. We sat down in early 2024 to refine them together, and it all came together really quickly. We even road-tested together at Tomorrowland Belgium 2024, where it got an amazing reception.”
For Armin van Buuren, stepping into the drum & bass world was an exciting challenge: “Drum-and-bass isn’t my usual space, but I had some ideas and it was a no-brainer to collaborate closely with Pendulum on this version. Being in the studio together made all the difference, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.”
Formed in 2002 by Rob Swire, Gareth McGrillen and Paul ‘El Hornet’ Harding, Pendulum quickly took to the road, touring across their native home in Perth to internationally acclaimed clubs and festivals around the release of their seminal debut album ‘Hold Your Colour’. After relocating to the UK and forming the Pendulum live band, El Hornet took the reins on the Pendulum DJ Sets and has spent the past 15 years performing at some of the biggest electronic festivals in the world including Liquicity, Let It Roll, Rampage, Dreambeach and EDC.
Now alternating between the individual band members, and sometimes performing as a trio, the Pendulum DJ sets have taken on a life of their own with a huge global presence and genre spanning shows ranging from drum and bass, house, techno, tech house breaks and hardcore. To find upcoming events and shows for Pendulum DJ set, please visit our Tour Page where you can find ticketing information.

Lyrics Find myself in the eye of a hurricane another wounded soul Through the dust I've been trying to call your name Come and take me home
'Cause no matter the noise You're bringing peace to my mind Being drawn to your voice Even when you're out of sight
Wish I could find all the words 'Cause I've been trying to describe The look in your eyes
The sound of you When my world was going down All I needed was the sound of you
When my head was spinning round All I needed was the sound of you You The sound of you
When my head was spinning round All I needed was the sound of you
Felt the pulse of your heart in the shadows You got me wanting more
A dream at night shows a line as the story goes That's all I'm asking for
'Cause no matter the noise You bring peace to my mind Being drawn to your voice Even when you're out of sight
Wish I could follow the words 'Cause I've been trying to describe The look in your eyes
The sound of you When my world was going down All I needed was the sound of you When my head was spinning round All I needed was the sound of you You The sound of you
When my head was spinning round All I needed was the sound of you
Sound of you You
The sound of you When my head was spinning round All I needed was the sound of you

Dimitris Kechagias Review: [review top="1"] [item value="10"]Armin van Buuren & Rob Swire - Sound of You [/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Armin van Buuren & Rob Swire's collaboration on "Sound of You" emerges as a quintessential club anthem, meticulously crafted to energize dancefloors worldwide. The track is anchored by Rob Swire's compelling vocal performance, which is not only the emotional backbone but also an expertly processed element that stands out amidst the dense, dynamic instrumentation. The vocals are treated with subtle reverb and delay effects, enhancing their spatial presence without overshadowing the track's rhythmic intensity. From a production standpoint, "Sound of You" thrives on its robust low-end foundation. The energetic basslines are likely synthesized using analog emulations or digital wavetable synths, offering a rich, warm texture that complements the track’s aggressive tonality. The bass is meticulously side-chained to the kick drum, a common technique in dance music that ensures both elements coexist harmoniously, maintaining clarity and punch. The thumping kicks are crafted with precision, possibly layered with multiple samples to achieve a full-bodied impact that cuts through the mix. Paired with punchy drums, including crisp snares and sharp hi-hats, the rhythm section provides an irresistible groove. The drum programming showcases intricate patterns that balance between syncopation and straight-driven beats, ensuring both complexity and accessibility. Euphoric melodies soar over this rhythmic bed, crafted with lush synth pads and arpeggiated leads. These melodic elements are rich in harmonic content, likely achieved through the use of wide stereo imaging and modulation effects such as chorus and phaser. The melodies are arranged to build tension and release, a hallmark of Armin van Buuren's trance influences, creating an emotional journey for the listener. Operating at 128 BPM, "Sound of You" is tailored for mainstage performances, its tempo ideal for maintaining a high-energy atmosphere. The track's arrangement features strategic breakdowns and build-ups, employing risers, sweeps, and dynamic filtering to manipulate energy levels and keep the audience engaged. Anticipation builds for the upcoming remix by Pendulum, an electrifying Drum and Bass rendition, set for release on 11th April, 2025, which promises to reinterpret the track’s elements with a faster tempo and more intricate breakbeat patterns. "Sound of You" is pure adrenaline, a masterclass in electronic music production, and a testament to the synergy between Armin van Buuren and Rob Swire. #PureGold Love iT [/content]
