What a line-up (and yes, you’re absolutely right to be excited)! The unmistakable voice of the ‘Concrete Angel’, Christina Novelli, joins forces with UK singer-songwriter Reigns (rightly renowned of course for her work with Carl Cox, Low Steppa, Benny Benassi, Disco Fries and others). If ‘Say Something’s song sounds familiar, well there’s nothing wrong with your memory! Its original version is now pushing 700million YouTube views, having come to prominence through several reality music shows, while also putting a fair old dent in the global music charts. Notably, it also arrived a decade back, right around the time Christina Novelli was first embarking on her career.

In conversation, Ciaran and Christina chanced upon the subject of ‘Say Something’, which immediately opened up the most organic of collaborative opportunities. Banding together, they’ve converted A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera’s track into something that not only emotionally storms the heart and mind .. but also the clubfloor!

Movingly relatable, ‘Say Something’s song reflects on one of life’s ‘we’ve all been there’ moments. Christina sings from the perspective of someone struggling to justify keeping a relationship alive, while oh so slowly coming around to the painful acceptance that it may be beyond saving.

“Anywhere I would have followed you”, she asserts before placing vulnerable heart-on-sleeve with "I'll be the one … if you want me to", while Ciaran picks out each expressive twist with melodic shimmer and chime. Black Hole Recordings is a name synonymous with the irresistible rise of trance, and to this day the label remains one of the largest indie dance record labels in the world. In recent years, trance has once again come to the fore as a popular music genre and with this new club night “Black Hole presents Stardust Odyssey” the label presents some of their label favorites.

Christina Novelli

Christina Novelli is one of the best-known singers within the Trance genre. Christina reaches millions of fans worldwide with her unique voice, through collaborations with Armin van Buuren, Richard Durand, Craig Connelly, and Dash Berlin. Christina recently released her debut Dance album 'It's Not Me, It's You' and will be playing tracks from the album for the first time during Stardust Odyssey.


Richard Durand

Richard Durand is a master at creating catchy melodies in trance. His collab “The Air I Breathe” with Christina Novelli was the A State Of Trance #1 Tune Of The Year in 2018, in 2019 he came 2nd in the same list with Christina with “Save You”. Richard already has 5 artist albums to his name, and a mountain of In Search Of Sunrise mix compilations. He is known for his energetic DJ performances that he has given all over the world.


PARAFRAME

Extremely talented producer who creates a new musical dimension with his mix of progressive house and melodic techno. Worked with artists such as Miss Monique, Matvey Emerson and Avis Vox. In 2020, he released his first solo album Inhale, which contains 10 original songs. PARAFRAME is an innovative artist who takes his audience on an immersive journey, often supported by the coolest visuals.


Daniel Wanrooy

Dordrecht DJ/producer who has been influencing the playlists of the world's biggest artists for more than a decade. In 2020 he started his own label Elpida Music, in collaboration with Black Hole Recordings. Daniel is a versatile and creative artist who pushes the boundaries of trance, progressive, house and electro. He is also responsible for one of the mixes on the most recent edition of the legendary In Search of Sunrise series, #19 from December 2023.



Fisherman

Dutch DJ known for his energetic and melodic trance sound. Started his career as half of the duo Fisherman & Hawkins, which scored hits such as “Apache”, “Gotham Serenade” and “Off The Hook”. He collaborated with and received support from big names such as Markus Schulz, Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten and Tiësto. Fisherman is a passionate artist who always strives for musical innovation. His debut album 'Metamorphose' will be released in 2024.

Since her auspicious entry into the electronic music space (ask yourself, how was ‘Concrete Angel’ not GRAMMY-nominated!!?), taking the alt-route has become par for Christina Novelli’s course. To start putting that into context, her new album ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You!’ (out Feb 9) is the direct follow up to 2019’s ‘Through My Eyes’. Given that the latter was an all-acoustic affair, while ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You!’ could hardly be more ‘club’, it allows you some idea of the artistic latitude Christina’s carved for herself.


As Christina says, through the album she’s “looking to share experiences of the various types of relationships I’ve navigated in my life, and the journey, so often of self-discovery, they’ve taken me on.” As ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You!’s title suggests, they’re ones with which you’ll likely relate. Behind her personal insights lie themes familiar to many: love, regret, obsession, passion, grief; break-ups, make-ups, and parental/sibling relationships to mention but a few.


Convention-challenging titles and lyrics are something Novelli’s carried through from her first release to her most recent work. So, it’s as much about the ‘how’ she’s approached the album’s themes as the ‘why’. Consider … where else would you find a title like ‘Heavy’, whose lyrics are foreshadowed with promise and brighter days potential? Who else would wrap up the ‘Leaving Me’/‘Beautiful Lies’/‘Fallen Ones’ singles run with a track that so emphatically states, ‘I’m Not Sad’! This is Christina’s world, where the prosaic or preformed have no place and ‘the usual’ is something she pushes back against with all her artistic psyche. 


By their natures, soloists thrive in the spotlight’s beam. Here however you have a vocalist actively seeking to share mic and song-sheet with others of the same skillset. Over its ten-track course, Christina co-writes and sings with Sue McLaren, Sarah de Warren, Bo Bruce, Linney, Reigns, and Susie Ledge on songs that span the aforementioned themes. While ostensibly novel, her commitment to developing other female artists is something Christina’s pursued through her Muse Music Records and Muse Music Management enterprises for a number of years now.

 She expands: “for as long as I can remember I’ve always wanted to do joint vocal collaborations, so I thought this was the perfect time to introduce this. The vocal collaborations are also co-writes, which meant we were able to share our stories, in the lyrics we wrote. Each artist that I worked with on this album, I chose specifically because of their individual and unique talents. I love how perfectly they have mastered their own craft and how much they have inspired me in their music. So, I just knew they would get the vision I had for this album and together we would create magic.”


There’s no better window to a singer’s soul, than through their lyrics, and Christina’s telling us much about hers on this album. ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You!’ also holds a mirror up to shared life experiences though, while its tracks collectively comment on the human condition - frailties and all. At its core however, ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You!’ asks a simple question: … Can you relate!?

With tags like ‘Leaving Me’, ‘Beautiful Lies’ and ‘Fallen Ones’, you’d be forgiven for thinking the course of true love wasn’t running smooth Chez Novelli. However, it’s not the headlines that count here … but the between-the-lines implications of her songs. With a finely crafted subtlety, she goes beyond their titles to tell matters-of-the-heart tales infinitely more nuanced.

With the final action of her second 2023 EP, she clarifies those complexities: ‘I’m Not Sad’ truly says it all! FIND IT HERE !

While the EP’s tracks had subtext, their overarching theme couldn’t be clearer - and more original. Their all-female, all-duet composition is something all but unheard of within electronic music. After recent songwriting link-ups with Sarah de Warren, Bo Bruce and Linney, she wraps that run up with a Reigns teaming.


Having already lent voice to Carl Cox, Benny Benassi, Low Steppa and Disco Fries’ productions, UK vocalist Reigns comes to ‘When My Angel Sleeps’ with plenty of shared credit pedigree. This however is the first time she’s co-owned mic-&-song with another singer. 

Chiming with ‘I’m Not Sad’s emphatic statement, ‘When My Angel Sleeps’ is a masterstroke of emotional elevation. With its irresistible, irrepressible riff detectably sharing some musical DNA with another of Christina’s ‘Angels’, it’s a masterful last flourish to Novelli’s most accomplished EP to date. You’ve got to hand it to her … when it comes to putting together meaningful, impactful collaborations, Christina Novelli has all the right instincts. With her latest, ‘Beautiful Lies’, she’s teamed up with Bo Bruce, and it’s hard to imagine another singer with whom she shares more common ground.

Christina and Bo grew up somewhat in the UK spotlight and in 2012 enjoyed near overnight success, Bruce as the season 1 finalist on The Voice and Novelli, of course with the unforgettable, ‘Concrete Angel’. Now, together, they’ve pooled that affinity to spin some ‘Beautiful Lies’.

If you were expecting something lighter-weight than Christina’s last release (the emotionally slaying ‘Leaving Me’ with ‘Monster’-singer, Sarah de Warren), best guess again! Their song mulls a love-on-life-support, where half-truths have indeed tipped over into ‘Beautiful Lies’.

“You say you want the truth, but the truth hurts”, sings, Christina, while Bo counters “you’ve been burning me”, “I’ve been burning you” but “I keep on coming back, ‘cause it’s all I know”. A testament to their lyric-writing abilities, the duo manages to seed a first-listen catchiness into ‘Beautiful’s intricately involved song. Propelled floor-ward, by its pulsing bass and sky-kissing synths, ‘Beautiful Lies’ arrives today through all good sales and streaming channels HERE.
