Amsterdam Dance Event is the place to be if you are involved one way or another with the electronic dance music industry and culture. Five incredible days packed with fantastic conferences covering the most important topics, with well known speakers and five stunning nights with excellent events covering every single genre of EDM.

On Thursday 17th of October the event that was Sold out early and is a must to attend on many ADE delegates list, was the tenth year anniversary party for the best Global Dance Label; Armada Night. The label’s biggest stars were in attendance including Armin van Buuren & Cosmic Gate who performed in the main room, while in the second room DJ’s like Max Graham & Ruben de Ronde rocked it with their brilliant mind-blowing sets. We caught up with Max Graham and conducted the interview which follows regarding the Armada Night at ADE and much more.

Interview was written and conducted by Dimitri Kechagias, Music Journalist & Dj/Radio

Dimitri : What is your opinion about the Amsterdam Dance Event and its contribution to the growth of the EDM scene & industry?

Max Graham: Seems like a well run event, nice to see everyone in the city. I have not attended the seminars so I can’t comment beyond that.

Dimitri: Do you have any special memories or experience that happened during ADE this year or the previous editions of ADE that you would like to share with us?

Max Graham: Both years I’ve been and it’s really just great to be in the same place as all your peers. The Armada dinner with all the artists was really a good chance to catch up and exchange ideas.

Dimitri: Last year you performed at Armada Night in the main room and at this year’s Armada Night event during ADE you performed in the second more intimate floor. Would you like to tell us about the difference between the two performances and which you enjoyed most?

Max Graham: I don’t like to play favourites and make things compete against each other. Both gigs were a lot of fun and I enjoy playing both small and large rooms. The Intimate events are always great to catch up with fans and play a little more underground vs a main room where you play more big room tracks. I enjoyed both a lot though.

Dimitri:  This year Armada Music celebrates its 10 years of success. Why do you believe this record label is so successful, and who had the idea to start Re*brand with Armada Music.

Max Graham: I started Rebrand in 2005 and brought it to Armada in 2008 so they could help it grow. Maykel is a hard worker, the team they have is all pushing to grow so it’s easy to see why they are successful.

Dimitri:  During those years did other companies try to persuade you to move your label to them? If yes why did you choose to stay with Armada Music?

Max Graham: I did have some choice before I chose Armada but it made the most sense due to the connection with ASOT and the team there believing in what i do and the sound i want to release.

Dimitri: Your latest releases on Re*brand are two great EP’s including remixes from other artists. Would you like to give us a short comment about each remix?

Max Graham:

Diamonds (Wezz Devall Remix)
Wez really brought a funky cool sound to this one, we loved it.

Where You Are (John O'Callaghan Remix)
John is a legend and he contacted me as he loved the riff, he asked to make a version that suited him and I was honoured. The vibe is different on this and I love it.

Sun In The Winter (KhoMha Remix)
This one I’ve been playing for two years, KhoMha loved the vocal and agreed to do the mix just for us to play, it became so popular we just had to release it. He uses the vocal really well.

Still There's You (Juventa Private Mix)
Juventa helped with the original production and did his own version for himself to play, it was a great addition to the pack as a new way to showcase Jeza’s voice.

Dimitri: One of the latest releases that got great comments and reactions was your collaboration with Protoculture for the remix of the massive ‘Gabriel & Dresden feat. Neil Ormandy - Tomorrow Comes’ anthem. Can you tell us about the production process of this remix?

Max Graham: Protoculture and I work step by step, there’s actually a great breakdown of exactly what we did here - http://www.maxgraham.com/tomorrow-comes-the-breakdown-of-a-collab/

Dimitri: Re*brand supports many new talent from around the globe. Is it possible to give us a short comment about each one of them?

Max Graham:
Solid Stone: Love soft deep bass sound with emotional melodies.
Johan Malmgren: Hi tech bass, great chords and incredible detail in the production.
Steve Haines: Steve makes dance floor bombs, full of energy and driving sounds.

Dimitri: Your weekly Cycles Radio show has been a big success and many fans tune every week to listen the exclusive tracks that you select with much care for every episode. Can you reveal for us how long it takes you to select the tracks and produce the radio show?

Max Graham: It takes a full day on Monday of listening to all the new releases and promos. I edit each track to fit my style then mix the show tuesday mornings before it airs. I’ve even changed an episode due to an amazing track arriving in my inbox and uploaded it to DI.fm with only 10 minutes to spare before the show but this is rare. It’s usually done by Tuesday morning.

Dimitri: Which Cycles Radio episode is your favourite until now which you remember most?

Max Graham: I don’t think finest exists as everyone has different things they like but 067 is a personal favourite as it’s the first time I bought some techno to the show and people loved it. I’ve always loved and played techno live but kept it off the show as it was primarily a trance audience but they’ve grown with me and we’ve gained new fans so it’s even more diverse now.

Dimitri: Do you advise other DJs who may read this interview to start their own radio show soon and why?

Max Graham: It’s a great way to let people know what to expect at your shows as our style inevitably changes over time.

Dimitri: Is it possible to reveal to us the forthcoming releases on Re*Brand that we should wait to purchase with anticipation?

Max Graham: New music coming from Johan Malmgren, Solid Stone, Protoculture and myself. Cycles 5 will have some exclusives :)

Dimitri: Are there any release plans for the brand new Cycles vol.5 compilation? If yes do you still accept submissions for new tracks? What kind of tracks are you searching for  in this new volume in particular?

Max Graham: Yes Jan 15th on Armada/Rebrand. I’m always accepting submissions for both Rebrand and the CD I have in the works at any given time. Genre is not important really. http://maxgraham.com/contact/ is the place to go.

Dimitri: Let’s finish off with the explosion of EDM music in the USA. Do you see it as a positive development for your personal career and for the whole EDM music scene in general?

Max Graham: Anytime more people are brought into the world of dance music it’s a positive effect for everyone in the industry so yes, as far as the whole scene I couldn’t say. I just do my thing :)

Many thanks to Max Graham for his time to reply on this interview and we hope to see him again at ADE 2014

25 years of dance music in The Netherlands

This year marks the celebration of 25 years of dance music in The Netherlands and as part of that ADE hosted multiple initiatives to join the festivities, such as the presentation of the book Mary Go Wild, club events, in- and outdoor expositions and many presentations and movie screenings.

For more information, live reports, pictures and video's visit www.amsterdam-dance-event.nl

The ADE took place from October 16 - 20 and is organized by the Amsterdam Dance Event Foundation, an initiative of Buma. Official partner ADE: Samsung.

Hugo de Graaf, A&R Manager at Black Hole Recordings
Are you spending your nights and days to create that one track that will get you in the Beatport charts and on the biggest festivals? Are you the next Tiësto or the next Trent Reznor? Now it all really starts; you must now leave your bedroom and come to Amsterdam to attend ADE and get your music to the biggest record labels.

Here are some reasons why you should come to Amsterdam Dance Event and how to get the most attention to your demo track.

Amsterdam Dance Event is the biggest dance event out there: you will not find that many artists, managers, label owners and dj's in one place anywhere else. This is the best opportunity to meet your idol or that one A&R manager that can get your track into the charts and make you a superstar!

ADE is a cool spot to be inspired, many speakers can give you that one tip you will remember for the rest of your career.
There are presentations on the best ways to use your hardware but also presentations on how to get the best result from your facebook page and twitter account.

All the key players in the dance music industry are present in Amsterdam, you can now learn from the best!

The conference is the epicenter of ADE but all parties are at walking distance so when you have been speaking to all those managers all day you can easily go for a drink and dance your ass off at hundreds of cool parties.

When you are attending ADE or preparing your demo, make sure you are well prepared:
    – Be certain that the music on the demo USB/CD is correct
    – write a nice biography, not too long and not too short
    – make sure you have a cool package of the demo, cheesy dj pics are really a no-go!
    – social media, write down all the URL's to your twitter, facebook and youtube account
    – your full contact information, full (real) names, email address, telephone number and home address, hey we all need to know who we are talking to right?

Why do you want to meet A&R managers every 15 minutes? Find the right labels that are already releasing your kind of music, when you make trance it's no use to hand out a demo to a label that only releases drum and bass, how harsh it might sound, you are not that one special artist that will change an A&R manager's mind.

Make sure you write down everything you have discussed with the A&R managers or artists so you can do the right follow up some time after ADE, it doesn't make sense to contact on Monday right after ADE, we are all too busy recovering from the hangovers from those great parties in Amsterdam.

Come on, Amsterdam is a cool city!! The canals, great architecture, cool people and the Dutch attitude is known all over the planet. Business and fun in one package!

Above all, just go and have FUN! And be easy on the Dutch herbs and alcohol it might get you into the hospital and you will forget all the cool artists you've met and the great meetings you have with all those cool A&R managers!

We've created a nice Amsterdam Dance Event sampler, put it on before you head out to Amsterdam.

Words written by Hugo de Graaf, A&R Manager Wildife / Rub A Duck Black Hole Recordings

After confirming a whole bunch of top names for ADE Pro and ADE Next, including Tiesto, Nile Rodgers, DJ Shadow, Dave 'Mr.MIDI' Smith, and Danny Tenaglia, we did not think that we'd be adding any more to such an esteemed list. But we just have, and it's none other than Giorgio Moroder, the man who revolutionized dance music by adding throbbing, sexy as hell electronics to disco beats.

A measure of the importance of Moroder's work with Donna Summer back in the late 70s, is that Love to Love You, Baby and I Feel Love still sound as if they were made yesterday, they're still staples of DJ sets around the world, and they remain guaranteed floor-fillers 36 years after being released. On top of that, they have inspired some of the world's greatest remix talents including Patrick Cowley, Faithless and Masters at Work to add their flair and creativity to these truly seminal slices of cybertronic soul.

Giorgio Moroder will be appearing on the panels The Game-changers 2 and D.I.S.C.O. How Deep Are Your Roots? at ADE Pro.

The I AM HARDWELL documentary sees the light of day at ADE Playground.

After kicking off his world tour concept, 'I am Hardwell', earlier this year in his home country of Holland, Hardwell will release his 'I am Hardwell' documentary at ADE. For over two and half years, Hardwell had been followed by videographer Robin Piree, the man behind Hardwell's aftermovies and Q&A concepts. During that time, Piree had been extensively filming the 25-year-old DJ/producer's exponential growth from being an upcoming artist to becoming an international superstar.

The documentary provides a captivating inside-look on Hardwell that is just as rare as the story behind the dance music phenomenon. The first viewing that is open to the public will take place at de Balie on Friday October 18 and Saturday October 19. These daily screenings are free exclusive for ADE Card Holders (limited seats, full is full).

We all know Paul Oakenfold as one of the pioneers of trance, having remixed hits like PPK - ResuRection and produced classics Bullet In The Gun, Southern Sun and Not Over Yet as well as recent hits "Full Moon Party", "Glow in The Dark" and "Come Together". This year Oakenfold is pushing a different sound through his label Perfecto Fluoro, a blend of Goa and Psychedelic Trance. Psy-trance may traditionally bring the image of hippies running around naked in a field, but that has not been the case for over the last 20 years. Oakenfold will showcase his take on the psychedelic sound during Luminosity presents: Perfecto Fluoro and friends.

This is not a sound that can be explained easily, one must dig a bit deeper into this dance genre. Trance is most commonly known because of DJ’s like Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten and Paul van Dyk. They all play trance but their sound, as of late, is influenced by the rise of commercial house. Perfecto Fluoro’s mission is to showcase an energetic, unique and psychedelic sound whose roots originate from Goa Trance as opposed to pure Psy. This showcase will open the doors for artists like Neelix, John ‘00’ Fleming and legend Astrix.

All of these artists are veterans within their style and are still creating fresh sounds, but when it comes to the masses they fall under the radar. John ‘00’ Flemming reminds people that the vast majority of the psy-trance scene doesn’t care for commercial success and the fans try to protect the underground scene. Although, with the up rise of commercial dance sub-genres, some artists feel the need to say no to the softer trance rather than adapt their sound to match it.

Simon Patterson is a perfect example; his recent style change to encompass a mix of psy-trance as well as tech received massive support from all over the world. Patterson has not only by remixed the Neelix Classic - Leave Me Alone but also by used psy-trance elements in his most recent Beatport trance number one hit ‘The One’ signed to Armin van Buuren's Armind label. Fans all over the world refer to him as the Psymon Patterson, instead of just Simon.

We are very happy to see these artists perform during this year’s Amsterdam Dance Event, being a platform for all electronic music genres. For those looking to avoid the cheese and if you are up for a night of deep, dirty and dark psy-trance, not to be mixed with Korean gangnam style, definitely check out this event on Wednesday October 16th.

ADE and Buddha to Buddha team up and proudly present the official ADE'13 Bag!

This year marks the beginning of a beautiful new collaboration between ADE and Amsterdam-based jewellery and fashion brand Buddha to Buddha. This brand is internationally renowned for their robust handcrafted, silver jewellery and durable accessories. Both organisations’ creative teams worked together very closely to come up with something fresh and new that still has the unmistakable ADE accents and the fine finishing of the artisan style of Buddha to Buddha.

The result is a sturdy vintage looking bag that combines the black and yellow trademark ADE colours with metallic studs and silver coloured logo sign that refers to Buddha to Buddha’s silver jewellery line. The bag is big enough for your laptop and all other ADE conference essentials with extra pockets for earplugs, business cards and agenda.

The ADE'13 bag is exclusively available to all 1 and 5-Day conference visitors, but luckily a limited number of 500 pieces will also be sold through both the Buddha to Buddha and ADE website and during the ADE. Price: €49,90.

He was the first DJ ever to top the DJ Top 100 poll three times in succession back in 2002-4, but perhaps more remarkably this astonishingly consistent Dutch trance superstar has been hovering between second and third place ever since.

Yes, we are talking about Tïesto, ladies and gentleman, and we're sure you don't find it hard to imagine that we are absolutely delighted to be able to announce that he will be joining us at ADE Pro this year. Although he has been a regular performer at ADE Festival, it has been 14 years since he took part in ADE's daytime events, the last time being in 1999.

Tïesto will be at ADE Pro on Friday, October 18th, and will be taking part in a Q&A session with Tommie Sunshine.
