Remixing the official anthem for A State of Trance 2024 can be quite the challenge, yet Ben Nicky and Cubicore knock it out of the ballpark. Retaining the qualities that made ‘Destination’ a full-blown anthem whilst injecting a sound all their own, the two scene powerhouses show exactly how on top of their game they truly are.

[item value="10"]Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Rank 1 & Ruben de Ronde - Destination (A State of Trance 2024 Anthem) (Remixes) [/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]The original mix of the ASOT festival has achieved significant success, propelling charts, playlists, and streaming platforms. However, the collaboration between Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Rank 1, and Ruben de Ronde, titled “Destination (A State of Trance 2024 Anthem),” has been remixed by renowned artists. Ben Nicky’s remix combines hard house and hard dance elements with a psy trance influence, tailored for mainstage performances during peak moments. The Cubicore remix takes the track into the progressive trance genre, characterized by punchy basslines, thumping drums, electro-infused grooves, and exceptional flow, effectively incorporating the iconic main theme riff suitable for progressive trance DJs. #PureGold Love IT[/content]

Collaborating with long-time friends and fellow flagbearers is the perfect setup for an inspired audial adventure, especially when it’s for the official anthem of one of trance’s biggest annual events. For the 2024 instalment of A State of Trance - which celebrates the milestone number of 1150 episodes of the brand’s legendary radio show and also sees the event series move into its new home in Rotterdam - Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Rank 1 and Ruben de Ronde joined forces to create the event’s official track: ‘Destination’.

Made in June 2023 during a livestreamed three-day studio session that gave fans the opportunity to share feedback and gain rare insight into the production process (all sessions are available to watch back via YouTube), the official anthem for A State of Trance 2024 is as epic as you’d expect from a link-up between trance mainstays Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Rank 1 and Ruben de Ronde. Chock-full of energy, euphoria and uplifting appeal, ‘Destination’ will be the go-to track for trance fans from all over the world celebrating this new milestone for A State of Trance.
“We’re still buzzing ourselves, to be honest,” said Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Rank 1’s Benno de Goeij and Ruben de Ronde when asked what it’s like to create the official anthem for A State of Trance live together. “Despite having been friends, colleagues and likeminded trance music enthusiasts for years, it took a while before we were finally able to do something like this with everyone in the same room; it was such a blast to finally get in the zone together and make this work, even more so because our fans were able to watch us live. The creative spark and euphoria were there from the get-go; we had a lot of fun and ‘Destination’ is all we wanted it to be. We hope everyone will love this official anthem for A State of Trance 2024!”
Launching an official A State of Trance anthem has been a yearly tradition since the first anthem for A State of Trance 450, ‘450’ by Sebastian Brandt, was released back in 2010. Since then, official anthems have been released every year, such as Armin van Buuren and Markus Schulz’s ‘The Expedition’ (for A State of Trance 600), Ben Gold’s ‘I’m In A State Of Trance’ (for A State of Trance 750), Armin van Buuren’s ‘Turn The World Into A Dancefloor’ (for A State of Trance 1000), Armin van Buuren and Cosmic Gate’s ‘REFLEXION’ (for A State of Trance 1100) and now ‘Destination’ by Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Rank 1 and Ruben de Ronde. Always celebrating a new milestone number of episodes of the radio show, every annual event and corresponding anthem centers around a specific theme.

About A State of Trance

Having evolved from a small radio show into a wide-ranging and far-reaching brand with many different spin-offs, ‘A State of Trance’ is one of the world’s biggest and most popular dance music brands. Built from the ground up since the very first episode of Armin van Buuren’s radio show in 2001, ASOT now entails a globally acclaimed label and a breath-taking event series to boot, drawing tens of thousands of music lovers from all over the globe.

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Rank 1 & Ruben de Ronde met in the studio for 3 days to produce the track Destination (A State of Trance 2024 Anthem). The track merges the experiences and years of days and nights spend in the studios by the four prolific producers. It embraces the nostalgic feel of the late 90's trance with chunky kicks, punchy basslines and thumping drums sounding truly old school coming out of the deepest vaults of trance history remodeled for the future trance generations. The main melody in the breakdown is very infectious and ear catching giving you goosebumps and wide smile supporting clubbers to let all the worries behind and meet their new Destination in Rotterdam. It will be great to see some remixes on this anthem coming from each artist. #PureGold Love IT[/content]

At the top of its game in 2001 - Rank 1’s Piet Bervoets and Benno de Goeji having already aced the scene with ‘Airwave’ - high-flying Belgian-Dutch duo XiJaro and Pitch ensure ‘Such Is Life’ is still a force to be reckoned with over two decades later. The acceleration in and out of the breakdown, the melody and chord changes bringing dazzling light from the darkness, the restoration of the string/orchestral sections, and Shanokee’s composed vocal before and after the rush hits…it’s the power and the glory of trance, forever undefeated.

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Rank 1 tracks will always be adored because of the incredible synths and the memorable melodies. The timeless Such is Life feat. Shanokee is perfectly remixed by XiJaro & Pitch who deliver energetic driving basslines, pumping bouncy kicks and classic style beats while on top the original melodies are gracing the track. The breakdown is highlighted from the mouthwatering classical orchestral strings and stunning Shanokee voice that shines with her brilliant performance. The climax is powerful and euphoric as the original but tougher and sharper and crispier perfect for the loud sound systems of 2023.  #PureGold Love IT[/content]

The original ‘Awakening’ from Dutch powerhouse pair Rank1 is taken from 2002’s ‘Symsonic’ album, with versions from Ferry Corsten and Cosmic Gate. The Amsterdam-Australian Altitude ringleader MaRLo is given the responsibility of blasting the remix into the ears of the next generation, and does so fast and furiously. Racing through the night with plenty of sting, allowing for brief shelter by returning the compliments of the breakdown, ‘Awakening’ is all-action with a capital A. As all of the original’s components climb to the top, trance’s golden era comes home to blow minds second time around.

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Rank 1 are responsible for brilliant trance anthems with Awakening being one of their finest moment. The track still delivers and whenever is remixed gets the applause and support by many. The beloved MaRLo is on remix duties for the Awakening and does what he knows best to bring the classic in 2023. Heavy pounding techno infused basslines, cold thundercrushing drums, heavy grooves and raw atmosphere interrupted from snippets of the hair raising synths until the big breakdown comes in to reveal the euphoric melody in all its glory plus the whispering female vocals. The climax goes of the hook banging and booming for the ultimate crescendo to bring tears to the eyes of all those who loved it back in the days. #PureGold Love IT[/content]

The only ever made one … and it was damn near perfect ... Twenty years ago this month, Benno de Goeij & Piet Bervoets put out ‘Symsonic’, their one and only Rank 1 album. Following anthems like ‘Such Is Life’, ‘Awakening’ and their signature track ‘Airwave’, the album thrust the group into the big leagues, cementing their reputation as one of the Dutch trance greats.

To mark the 20th anniversary of its release, across streaming, download and - for the first time - vinyl, Rank 1 are delighted to bring fans the definitive version of ‘Symsonic’. October 27 will bring the criterion edition which features all the original versions of the album’s time-tested classics. Digital formats meanwhile will also carry a disc’s worth of the best known and most celebrated remixes of their work, from artists like Cosmic Gate, Ferry Corsten, Push, ATB and Marco V.

An album unlike any other, ‘Symsonic’s reputation grew and grew as fans became evermore aware that it would be the group’s one-and-only. Favouring the greater immediacy of the record-and-release dynamic, after ‘Symsonic’, Rank 1 dedicated themselves exclusively to shorter forms like singles, EPs and collaborations. The fans desire for Rank 1 albums though meant that ‘Symsonic’ became their lightning rod and was still being discovered a decade after its release.

The album also came to be recognised as the foundation block for the revered ‘Rank 1 sound’. During its production, Benno & Piet spearheaded the use of a number of groundbreaking production techniques, including the use of sidechain compression, which brought their music its renowned ‘stadium sound’. Drawing on their classical piano backgrounds, they also pioneered the use of symphonic and orchestral elements in trance music, something reflected in both the album’s title and title track.

As we said, ‘Symsonic’ was damn near perfect, but any which way you slice it though, twenty years is a long time in music! So, for the Deluxe edition of the album, Benno & Piet have returned to the album and remastered each of her tracks, giving them a 20-years-later update. Tunes like ‘Down From The Deep’ and ‘Equilibrium’ boom that much bigger, while ‘Cosmomatic’, ‘Airwave’, ‘Conspiracy’ and others soar that bit higher. The album’s cooler-heeled numbers like ‘T.T.C.’ and the Sunday Afternoon Rework of ‘Such Is Life’ meanwhile are that much sharper, richer and more defined.

No doubt ready to delight Rank 1 fans further are a disc’s worth of the most hallowed remixes of ‘Symsonic’s jewels. Included amongst them are ATB’s rework of ‘Airwave’ and Marco V’s rewiring of ‘Such Is Life’. Both the Cosmic Gate and Ferry Corsten rebuilds of ‘Awakening’ are included, as is the Push remix of ‘Breathing’ and Dumonde’s refit of ‘It’s Up To You’.

And if all that wasn’t quite enough, accompanying ‘Symsonic (Deluxe)’, October 27 also sees Rank 1 redux their legendary Live Trance Energy 2002 set. Offering the chance to recapture a true moment in the genre’s history, the mini album contains Piet & Benno’s 30-minute mainstage turn at the famed Jaarbeurs Exhibition Hall in Utrecht. Quickly becoming the stuff of trance legend, before a capacity audience, the pair performed ‘Cosmomatic’, ‘Airwave’, ‘Awakening’, ‘Such Is Life’ and others. Every kick-drum thump, goosebump-inducing harmony, rafter-raising synth, knob-twist, fader-flip (and resulting crowd cheer!) has been remastered, ready to be enjoyed all over again.

Still letting their music do the talking twenty years later, Rank 1’s ‘Symsonic (Deluxe)’ arrives on October 27 and is available through all good streaming, vinyl and download channels here. You can experience Rank 1’s live-as-live-gets 2002 Trance Energy set on the same day here and there’s a full range of Rank 1 merchandise available at beyourselfplay.nl/rank1shop.OPR!!
