A true architect of the electronic underground, Baby Doc (Quentin Franglen) remains one of the most influential figures in the evolution of UK dance music. Emerging in the early 1990s as a pioneer of the Hard House and Nu-NRG sounds, he became a defining force at legendary institutions like London’s Trade. With a discography spanning iconic labels such as React, Prolekult, and Positiva, his production prowess has been sought after by global icons, resulting in over 200 remixes for artists including The Pet Shop Boys, Iggy Pop, and Cher.
In 2026, Baby Doc continues to push the boundaries of modern techno with his latest single, "Electric Blue," released on Cologne’s prestigious BluFin Records. Described as a "peak-time acid stomper," the track reaffirms his mastery of driving rhythms and hypnotic, analog-driven textures. This latest work follows a prolific run of recent releases, including collaborations with Mijk van Dijk and high-impact remixes on labels like Voltaire Music and Recovery Tech.
Shifting away from traditional DJing, Baby Doc’s contemporary presence is defined by immersive live sets. By eschewing standard formats in favor of prepared hardware-based performances, he delivers a visceral, high-energy journey that bridges his heritage in the 90s underground with the cutting edge of today’s Berlin and London techno scenes.
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]In 2026, Baby Doc’s “Electric Blue” emerges as a prime example of modern acid techno artistry, released under the acclaimed BluFin Records label in Cologne. Clocking in at 140 BPM, the track envelops listeners in a relentless surge of energy, defined by pulsating basslines, tight thumping kicks, and precise percussive layers that create a seamless, propulsive drive. Its rhythmic architecture demonstrates exceptional groove and momentum, effortlessly guiding dancers and listeners alike into a state of immersive flow. The intricate layering of analog acid lines and hypnotic synth motifs forms a harmonic spectrum that is both technically sophisticated and emotionally engaging, displaying a clear mastery of melodic hooks and sound design. The production quality of “Electric Blue” reflects Baby Doc’s meticulous approach to modern techno craftsmanship. Transitions and build-ups are executed with surgical precision, using spatial effects and evolving textures to create a sense of forward motion without ever breaking the energy flow. The dynamic range is carefully balanced to maintain an impactful loudness while preserving the depth of the mix, ensuring every element from the pounding low end to the shimmering acid lines occupies its own space. This attention to detail enhances the track’s club and festival readiness, providing DJs with clean cue points, looping potential, and consistent BPM stability that facilitates seamless integration into peak-time sets. On the creative front, the track’s arrangement is a testament to Baby Doc’s artistic identity, fusing classic acid techno elements with a modern, trance-inflected storytelling arc that captivates from intro to outro. Subtle variations in effects, dynamic energy shifts, and spatial modulation generate a sense of continuous progression, contributing to its high replay value and crowd reaction potential. Its immersive atmosphere not only energizes dance floors but also resonates on a psychological level. Research in music neuroscience indicates that repetitive, high-tempo electronic music can promote flow states and enhance mood regulation (Thompson et al., 2001; Zatorre & Salimpoor, 2013). Moreover, studies on rhythmic entrainment have shown that driving techno rhythms can support fitness and wellness activities by synchronizing movement and increasing exercise efficiency (Karageorghis & Priest, 2012). Beyond its technical merits, “Electric Blue” offers positive effects for mental health and fitness contexts. Immersive electronic music with clear rhythmic structures and progressive energy profiles has been associated with reduced stress, heightened focus, and improved emotional regulation (Chanda & Levitin, 2013). In wellness and group exercise settings, tracks like this can boost endorphin release and foster collective synchrony, enhancing both the physical experience and feelings of social connection. By merging high-level production with psychological impact, Baby Doc delivers a track that is not only a sonic powerhouse on the dance floor but also a supportive tool for human well-being. #PureGold Loveit [/content]

On their new release for BluFin Records, Noah Levin and Chris Maico Schmidt deliver "Dirty Bird ", a track that blends melodic layers with hypnotic rhythms.
A perfect fusion of emotion and energy, this is melodic techno designed to move both the mind and the dancefloor.
How wonderful, a cross-generational release from father and son!
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Noah Levin and Chris Maico Schmidt’s collaborative track “Dirty Bird” is a prime example of modern melodic techno fused with progressive and trance-inspired elements. Clocking in at 129 BPM, it’s a meticulously produced piece that balances hypnotic rhythms with emotive melodic layers, making it suitable for both home listening and high-energy club environments. From a production standpoint, “Dirty Bird” demonstrates masterful use of sound design and spatial imaging. The track opens with a tight, rolling kick drum layered with subtle low-end textures to establish a solid rhythmic foundation. Gradual introduction of percussive hi-hats and syncopated claps creates a forward-driving groove, while the bassline is crafted with a sidechain compression technique that syncs seamlessly with the kick, enhancing the track’s momentum. The melodic layers rely heavily on minor-scale arpeggios and soft atmospheric pads, supported by reverb and delay effects that add depth and stereo width. The mixdown showcases excellent loudness balance, with clear frequency separation and dynamic headroom that prevents listener fatigue. The arrangement follows a classic progressive structure, with well-timed build-ups and drops that guide the listener through a sonic journey. Transitions are handled via filter sweeps, risers, and white noise bursts, maintaining tension and release. The creative use of automation in panning and reverb tails enhances immersion, and the outro is neatly constructed for DJ-friendly cueing and looping. Scientific research supports that electronic music, particularly rhythmic and melodic techno, can positively influence mental health. The repetitive, hypnotic structures in “Dirty Bird” align with studies on auditory driving and flow states, which suggest that consistent BPM patterns can reduce anxiety and promote focus (Thoma et al., 2013). Its uplifting harmonics and steady tempo make it ideal for fitness and wellness classes, such as spin sessions, yoga flow with electronic accompaniment, or dance-based workouts. The release of dopamine through rhythmic entrainment and the stimulation of the motor cortex during listening can improve mood and motivation (Zatorre, 2005). Group wellness settings may also benefit from the social bonding effects of synchronized movement to music. Listeners are likely to experience heightened alertness and an emotional uplifting effect due to the track’s harmonic progression and rhythmic structure. The subtle interplay of atmospheric pads and driving basslines elicits both cognitive engagement and physical response, making it a powerful tool for DJs and wellness instructors. Its versatility across contexts—be it in clubs, festivals, or guided exercise environments—demonstrates its broad positive impact on human experience. Overall, “Dirty Bird” is not just a melodic techno gem with exceptional production quality; it also offers tangible mental and physical benefits, making it a standout track for both personal enjoyment and active wellness contexts.#PureGold Love IT [/content]

Running at an energetic 125 BPM, this melodic house-meets-techno anthem demonstrates a meticulous arrangement and sonic richness that effectively absorbs the mind and hypnotizes the spirit. From a production standpoint, DANCCER employs a sophisticated layering technique, where cool electronic synths are harmoniously intertwined with melodramatic strings, creating a moody, cinematic atmosphere. The track’s foundation is built upon a pulsating bassline that anchors the rhythm while allowing space for lush, atmospheric pads to float in and out, adding depth and dynamism. The drum programming stands out with meticulously crafted percussive elements that balance tight, punchy kicks with crisp hi-hats, subtle shakers, and intricate snare rolls, driving the track forward. The use of reverb and delay effects on select percussive hits enhances the spatial dimension, giving the track a sense of expansiveness without overwhelming the core groove. DANCCER’s sound design showcases an adept manipulation of synthesizers, with analog-inspired leads that deliver warm, resonant tones. Filter automation plays a crucial role, gradually unveiling sonic textures and facilitating smooth transitions between sections. This technique not only maintains the track’s hypnotic quality but also sustains listener engagement through dynamic shifts. The arrangement is cinematic and mysterious, characterized by strategic breakdowns that strip the composition to its emotive elements before rebuilding with dramatic flair. Mixing-wise, the track exhibits a polished balance where each element occupies its distinct space in the frequency spectrum. The low-end is tight and powerful, the mids are rich and full-bodied, while the highs are crisp yet controlled, providing clarity without harshness. German house innovator Audio Monkey drops a new progressive gem on BluFin Records.
Audio Monkey is based between Dusseldorf and Ibiza and brings deep, progressive and melodic innovation to the tech and house world.
Halo is a slow building gem packed with tension that keeps you on your toes. The deft synth details build atmosphere while thunderous bass rolls low and sweeping effects lead into a spine tingling breakdown. Once the drums drop again, the cinematic mood is all pervading as distant vocals come into earshot to send chills.
This is a well crafted new weapon from Audio Monkey.
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Audio Monkey's latest release, "Halo," is a masterclass in tension-building and sonic sophistication. Clocking in at a steady 120 BPM, this track is a slow-burning gem that meticulously crafts an atmosphere brimming with anticipation and emotional depth. From a technical standpoint, "Halo" showcases deft synth programming that layers intricate melodic elements with precision. The synth details are not merely decorative; they serve as the backbone, weaving a rich tapestry of sound that gradually unfolds. The thunderous bassline is engineered with sub-bass frequencies that roll deep, providing a solid foundation while maintaining clarity, thanks to expert EQ balancing that avoids muddiness in the low-end spectrum. The production employs sweeping effects that are skillfully automated to create dynamic motion within the mix. These effects act as transitions, seamlessly guiding the listener into a spine-tingling breakdown. Here, reverberant soundscapes expand the stereo field, making the atmosphere feel vast and cinematic. The breakdown is further enhanced by the use of sidechain compression, subtly breathing life into the track by allowing the kick drum to punch through without overpowering the melodic elements. When the drums re-enter, the percussive arrangement is both powerful and immersive. The use of layered drum samples, combined with meticulous transient shaping, gives each hit a crisp, impactful quality. Distant, ethereal vocals drift into the mix, treated with lush reverb and delay effects that add to the haunting, otherworldly vibe. One of the track’s standout moments is the breakdown featuring heavenly chorus vocals infused with an ethnic touch. These vocals are processed with a combination of pitch modulation and granular synthesis techniques, adding to their mysterious and ethereal character. The atmosphere here is simply transcendent, leading to a climactic drive that employs rhythmic modulation and harmonic layering to propel any dance floor into a hypnotic frenzy. In summary, "Halo" is not just a track; it's an auditory journey meticulously crafted with advanced production techniques and a deep understanding of sonic architecture. #PureGold indeed. From its humble beginnings amidst the vibrant sounds of Cologne to becoming an influential name in the global electronic scene, Andrea shares heartfelt insights into the challenges, triumphs, and personal growth that have shaped both her and the label over two dynamic decades.
In this exclusive interview, Andrea delves into the stories behind BluFin’s anniversary compilation, featuring previously unreleased tracks and remixes, and the special radio show that brings together over 20 of the label’s artists. Join us as we celebrate the legacy, the music, and the resilient spirit of BluFin Records through the eyes of the woman who has been its driving force.
Dimitris: Congratulations on BluFin Records' 20th anniversary! How does it feel emotionally to reach this significant milestone?
Andrea: Thank you, Dimitris! Reaching BluFin Records' 20th anniversary is both surreal and deeply emotional. Reflecting on this journey, it feels like time has flown by, filled with countless challenges and triumphs. Managing BluFin on my own for two decades has been incredibly demanding, but it's also been rewarding. When I think about everything I've navigated—the ups, the downs, the growth—I can't help but feel a genuine sense of pride. It’s been a remarkable adventure, and I'm grateful for all the experiences that shaped BluFin into what it is today.
Dimitris: Reflecting on the past two decades, how has your journey with BluFin Records shaped you personally and professionally?
Andrea: Reflecting on these 20 years with BluFin Records feels like flipping through the pages of my own personal diary, each track marking a significant chapter. BluFin has been more than just a label; it's been the rhythm to my growth, both personally and professionally.
Personally, this music has been the backdrop to my evolution, resonating through moments of joy and challenges alike. Professionally, the lessons have been profound—understanding the intricacies of the music industry, navigating the complexities of human connections, and most importantly, discovering deeper layers of myself.
I often find myself reminiscing about one of our early tracks, "Swimming With Sharks." It’s symbolic, really—navigating the industry sometimes felt exactly like that. But each experience, each challenge, and each triumph has sculpted who I am today, both as a part of BluFin and as an individual.
Dimitris: What inspired you to create BluFin Records back in 2005, and how did that decision reflect where you were in your life at the time?
Andrea: The inspiration to create BluFin Records in 2005 was deeply personal and transformative. My late husband and I had owned a beloved record store in Cologne, Music Man, which wasn’t just a business; it was a vibrant hub for music lovers and a big part of our identity.
However, with the rise of MP3s, the entire music landscape shifted dramatically. We had to sell the store—not out of choice, but necessity driven by changing times. That pivotal moment pushed me to harness the connections and experiences I had gathered, leading to the birth of BluFin Records. It was both a continuation of our passion for music and a new chapter reflecting resilience and adaptation in my life.
Dimitris: How have your relationships with artists not only influenced the label’s growth but also your own personal development?
Andrea: The relationships with the artists are truly the cornerstone of everything. They’ve shaped not just the growth and identity of BluFin, but have deeply impacted my personal development as well.
I genuinely cherish most of them, both on a personal and artistic level. Each artist contributes uniquely to what BluFin represents today. Without their talent and collaboration, the label wouldn’t have evolved into its current form.
We often refer to it as the BluFin Family because that’s what it feels like—a close-knit, supportive community where everyone plays a vital role.
Dimitris: Can you share a moment with an artist that profoundly impacted you on an emotional level?
Andrea: There have truly been countless moments where an artist has touched me deeply, making it difficult to single out just one. Each encounter holds its own unique emotional resonance.
Dimitris: The anniversary radio special features over 20 BluFin artists. How does seeing these artists come together for this celebration make you feel?
Andrea: Overwhelmed, but in the most wonderful way. Seeing over 20 BluFin artists come together for this anniversary radio special fills me with immense pride and gratitude. It's a testament to the incredible talent and dedication within our community. The energy, the collaboration, and the shared passion for music create a powerful, emotional experience that truly celebrates our journey and achievements together.
Dimitris: What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned from working so closely with diverse artists over the years?
Andrea: Working closely with such a diverse range of artists has taught me invaluable lessons. One of the most significant is the power of communication—sometimes things don’t go as planned, but there’s nothing that can’t be resolved through an open, honest conversation. This approach not only helps in overcoming challenges but also strengthens relationships. Over time, many of these artists have become friends, and through our collaborations, I’ve learned the importance of empathy, adaptability, and the beauty of different perspectives. Each artist brings a unique story, and being part of their creative journey continuously enriches my own understanding and growth.
Dimitris: How have the creative journeys of the artists you’ve worked with inspired or transformed your own perspectives on life and music?
Andrea: Absolutely, there are a few collaborations that stand out to me. Working with artists who challenge my usual approach has been incredibly transformative. For example, collaborating with certain artists pushed me to explore new sounds and emotional depths I hadn't considered before. Each partnership brings unique lessons, but it's the mutual trust and openness to new ideas that truly fosters personal growth. Those experiences not only shape my music but also broaden my perspective on life, teaching me about resilience, adaptability, and the beauty of creative exchange.
Dimitris: Are there any collaborations that hold a special place in your heart because of the personal growth they brought you?
Andrea: Yes, absolutely. There have been a few collaborations that truly stand out because of the profound personal growth they inspired in me. Working closely with individuals who challenge your perspectives and encourage you to step out of your comfort zone is invaluable. And Dimitris, you definitely hold a special place among them; our collaboration has been both enriching and transformative for me.
Dimitris: The anniversary compilation includes previously unreleased tracks and remixes. How do these tracks symbolize your personal and emotional journey with the label?
Andrea: The anniversary compilation is a reflection of a musical journey spanning over 20 years. It includes both old tracks and previously unreleased ones, each carrying personal significance. When selecting the tracks, I often find inspiration from the posters in my office from past events—thinking, "This has to be in," or "This track holds a special place for me." The process is guided more by gut feeling than by market trends or analyses; it's about what feels right emotionally and personally.
Dimitris: Could you share a story behind a track or an artist on the compilation that deeply resonates with you personally?
Andrea: Back in 2005, we used to hand-deliver vinyl, hauling white label samples to the post office with a sack barrow. It was a tangible, hands-on process. Now, everything’s digital—swift, global, and changed. Yet, despite all this evolution, one thing holds true: some tracks linger in your mind, unforgettable, stirring something deep within you.
Dimitris: How have the challenges and successes of running BluFin Records shaped your resilience and emotional strength?
Andrea: Running BluFin Records has certainly been a journey filled with both challenges and successes. These experiences have taught me to stand my ground more firmly and confidently. Now, I feel that I can even extend my elbows if necessary, asserting myself when the situation demands it, both emotionally and professionally.
Dimitris: Looking ahead, how do you hope your personal growth will continue to influence BluFin Records in the years to come?
Andrea: Looking ahead, I hope that my personal growth will continue to inspire BluFin Records with fresh perspectives and unwavering passion. Over the years, I've learned the value of resilience, adaptability, and staying true to our musical roots. My journey has been intertwined with BluFin's evolution, and as I grow, I aim to infuse that growth into every project we undertake. While the future is always uncertain, my commitment to nurturing talent, embracing new sounds, and cherishing every connection remains steadfast. I'm deeply grateful for the past 20 years, and I look forward to what lies ahead with optimism and an open heart. 🖤
Dimitris: Are there specific artists or projects that have pushed you out of your comfort zone and helped you grow?
Andrea: Yes, definitely. There have been key tracks and projects that really challenged me and fostered my growth. For instance, Cat.No. 4 by Acquaviva & Lutzenkirchen stayed at No. 1 on Beatport for three months. It was a massive achievement, though it’s interesting that many people weren’t even familiar with Beatport at the time. Experiences like this have pushed me beyond my comfort zone and contributed significantly to my development.
Dimitris: How do you balance the emotional connections you’ve built with artists while making tough business decisions?
Andrea: Dimitris, that's a thoughtful question. To be honest, I haven’t always managed to keep business and emotional connections completely separate. There are times when they intertwine, and while that can be challenging, it also adds a layer of authenticity and humanity to the work. It’s this very blend that often makes the experiences meaningful and real.
Dimitris: Has there ever been a moment when an artist’s work moved you in an unexpected way, perhaps shifting your views on music or life?
Andrea: Yes, there was a moment that truly stands out. I once listened to a piece by an artist I had never paid much attention to before. The emotion woven into the melody and the raw vulnerability in the lyrics struck me profoundly. It wasn’t just about the music—it felt like the song was peeling back layers of my own experiences, making me reflect on aspects of life I had overlooked. It shifted my understanding of how deeply art can connect us to our own emotions and to others, transforming not just my view on music but also my perspective on personal growth and empathy.
Dimitris: What has been the most rewarding personal experience for you as the owner of BluFin Records?
Andrea: The most rewarding personal experience for me as the owner of BluFin Records? That's a tough one, but I’d say the showcases at the Winter Music Conference (WMC) in Miami really stand out. They were incredible moments where I got to see our artists shine and connect with a passionate audience. It was truly fulfilling to witness the energy and enthusiasm surrounding our music in such an iconic setting.
Dimitris: If you could give advice to your younger self, just starting BluFin Records, based on everything you’ve learned, what would it be?
Andrea: The world has changed dramatically over the years, and the music industry has evolved in ways I could never have anticipated. If I could give advice to my younger self starting BluFin Records, I would say: stay true to your vision but remain adaptable. Embrace change as an opportunity for growth rather than a challenge. Build strong relationships, not just for business, but for mutual support and inspiration. Always keep learning and be open to new ideas, technologies, and sounds. Trust your instincts, but don't be afraid to seek advice when needed. Ultimately, enjoy the journey, because every experience, good or bad, shapes who you become.
Dimitris: Lastly, what heartfelt message would you like to share with the artists, fans, and partners who have been part of your personal and professional journey with BluFin Records over the past 20 years?
Andrea: I'd like to thank Mike and Evosonic again for the opportunity to do the show. From the beginning, we thought it was better to support each other than be selfish. I've always thought that.
Thanks to all my friends/artists who sent greetings and sets. Ramon, Jens, Namito, Martin, DJ Hildegard, Mijk, Toni, Robert, Pierce, Lutzenkirchen... I've known them for over 25 years... my brother Baby Doc, John from at the very first beginning, Rainer, who helped me in the beginning with remixes and contracts... my best friend Felix, who carried out the events with me, Tim, who has to put up with me, and of course Gottfried, my hero.
I have so many memories of the last years.. it's just a snippet … love you all
As we wrap up this heartfelt conversation, we extend our deepest gratitude to Andrea Engels for sharing her inspiring journey with us. Your candid reflections on BluFin Records' milestones, personal growth, and profound connections within the music community have been truly enlightening.
Andrea, thank you not only for your thoughtful answers but also for the genuine friendship that shines through in every word. Your passion, resilience, and dedication continue to inspire all who have the privilege to cross paths with you. Here's to celebrating the past 20 years and looking forward to many more filled with music, growth, and cherished memories. 🖤

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Mira Falkenstein enters BluFin with the stunning peak time techno banger Deeper. More than 7 minutes 138 BPM peak time techno horse power to make you scream loud and proud on the dancefloor. Its powerful and elegantly produced with hypnotic female vocals to hypnotize the mind until the heavy metallic drums and deep pounding basslines are unleashed to bang hard and fast without any delays. There are cool underrated synthy themes at the background to add certain moody dark atmosphere with Belgian trance influences in them. The result is a powerful weapon that techno and even trance djs should check out and listen if it can fit their sets. Highly Recommended. #PureGold Love IT [/content]

Dimitris Kechagias Review: [review top="1"] [item value="10"]Mikerobenics - The Cat And The Canary (Part 2) [/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"] One of the most seminal underground trance anthems by Mikerobenics, the iconic The Cat And The Canary is remixed perfectly in the second part of the remixes collection. Hackfeed remix is characterised as progressive house but actually this remix is a fantastic mixture of melodic techno, progressive and trance. This remix goes in a total different direction with not so many elements from the original. It's rather a great version that gets the inspiration from the original to follow a very unique and powerful interpretation. Noah Levin remix is 126 BPM tech house version that employs many elements from the original like the cool exotic melodies and acid layers. The tech house groove is danceable and uplifting so definitely is one of those versions that club DJs can not resist to play just once in their sets. Blame The Machines unleash an exceptional peak time driving techno version that is hypnotic and melodic with punchy kicks, pounding drums, driving basslines, great acid touches and fantastic playful use of the original melody creating another very majestic nostalgic club ready version not to be missed from your collection. #PureGold Love IT [/content]

1zimmerapartment is a new project by Electronic music lovers duo „Veteran“ DJ & Producer Chris Maico Schmidt and his voice – „newcomer“ prose poet & presenter Patrizia Battistella. She is the spark for their collaboration and inspiration to the man behind EVOSONIC Radio, also known under the following aliases: Mike S., Cybordelics or Mikerobenics. Eternelle is their first release and certainly not the last.
1zimmerapartment, that's Chris Maico Schmidt and Patrizia Battistella. They first met in 1999 when Mike was a DJ and host at EVOSONIC Radio in Munich. Although they crossed paths from time to time, it wasn't until 2022 that they truly got to know each other. And from hours of chatting and silly giggling, it turned to silly giggling, endless chatting about music and hours of hedonistic indulgence – Mike in the role of the DJ, Patrizia on the side of the audience.
It's hard to say whether it's merely due to mutual fondness, but because Patrizia mostly likes Mike's music and he seems to be obsessed with the timbre of her voice, it was only a matter of time before their first collaborative track emerged.
The creative coexistence of the two not only continually fosters (and challenges) each other's musical evolution – they also repeatedly encourage each other to stay true to themselves, to follow their own path – no matter how quirky or mundane the idea, how contrarian and unorthodox the sound.
For the roots of 1zimmerapartment's artistic identity lie in their philosophical principles – true authenticity, lived freedom, and the endeavor to escape the mainstream and rise above unquestioned conventions – socially and musically.
We are very excited that Mike and Patrizia aka 1zimmerapartment have accepted the challenge to answer our questions and you can read their answers and discover their music roots and future perspectives of this very promising new project.
1-Dimitris: It would be nice to start by telling us your 3 most important achievements or goals fulfilled in your career so far that you very are proud of.
Mike: My successes in the late nineties with Mikerobenics' Julika and Cybordelics – Adventures of Dama. Both tracks are still being played and remixed, and are also on some people’s alltime favourite techno track. German Dance Award for EVOSONIC Radio – I still run the radio station, and today there are of course countless web radios. But in the early days, it was a pioneer in terms of independent radio stations for non-commercial music. It still has a bit of cult status today. And because you can't separate the producer from the person, my greatest success is my son Noah Levin, who now produces and DJs himself.
2-Dimitris: Why and under which circumstances did you took the decision to start DJing or producing electronic dance music?
Patrizia: After spending so much time with Mike while he was live mixing for his radio shows or listening to him producing new songs, it was somehow just a matter of time. By now I could equip a whole studio myself. Fun fact: the only item that I still don’t own myself is a proper microphone :D
Mike: How it all started for me is well known.
3-Dimitris: Can you note down the top 3 producers that have influenced your decision to get involved in the electronic dance music scene and you admire and respect them very much?
Patrizia: Chris Maico Schmidt – the answer might seem constructed, but it is the truth. Being so close to music production made me want to contribute to it myself. Melodies, harmonies and – of course – lyrics and vocals.
Mike: The live show of Tyree Cooper at the Oz in Stuttgart. That must have been around 1989. I was flashed by that kind of powerful House music.
4-Dimitris: Can you tell us the top 3 tracks from the past that have influenced your sound the most and why?
Mike:
- Underworld: after listening to their “Dark and long”, I simply felt the urge to produce myself.
- Leftfield: Album Leftism.
5-Dimitris: It would be fantastic to talk about your latest release Eternelle EP on BluFin Records. Please tell us how these tracks came about and what was the idea behind them.
Mike: I wanted to try out the voice of Patrizia in a track. Somehow I heard some potential. When I heard the first sample – the lyrics of Eternelle recorded on her mobile phone – it was immediately clear to me that I want to work with that voice.
So we produced the first track. But since I wanted to do a Breakbeat version and because we couldn’t agree on some of the sounds, I produced two other mixes.
6-Dimitris: How long it took you to produce it and can u describe the production process in simple steps?
Mike: Actually all three edits were finished pretty quickly. Nevertheless, I was in doubt for months. During that time, I again and again changed some parts, so that it might become a global hit. At some point of time though, I had to admit to myself that it couldn't get any better. Today, I'm absolutely happy with all three versions.
7-Dimitris: Did you had any particular difficulties accomplishing that particular track or any specific technical challenges or obstacles that you had to overcome during its production.
Mike: The constant struggle with myself and my standards. And not to forget that I also have to please the other part of our duo, which is not less challenging ;)
8-Dimitris: If you would have the opportunity to change something in your track and maybe to do a new remix what elements are you unhappy with and you are going to change? Is there any artist that you feel would be fantastic to remix this track and why?
Mike: Richie Hawtin. And Underworld, of course.
Patrizia: Far & High. And Acid Pauli... of course 😊
9- Dimitris: Which music composition software or hardware you prefer and why? What is your opinion of the latest movement to produce music with more analogue equipment and with less or without any digital software?
Mike: I mainly work with plugins and Ableton Live as my DAW. I don't really care what someone is using for his productions and whether digital or analog „is better“. To me, it’s the result that counts.
10-Dimitris: Do you prefer vocal or instrumental tracks? If there are vocals on the track we discuss about tell us about the singer you work with?
Mike: Normally, when I use voice samples in my tracks, I use them as kind of an instrument. With Patrizias voice it is slightly different, I put it much more in the foreground. She is no singer, but she has a very powerful and subtile versatile voice. If I had to describe her: when I hear her, I see her as the dubbing voice of Eartha Kitt.
11-Dimitris: You are the owner of EVOSONIC Records please tell us when did you set it up, the reasons behind this decision and your top 3 releases on the label so far plus 2 or 3 releases that we should look after from your label.
Mike: EVOSONIC Records, since 2016. Because I wanted to have my own label and I also had the opportunity.

2. VA – Evosonic25 (EvoRec 063)

12-Dimitris: Tell us about your fantastic radio station Evosonic Radio. Why is the coolest choice for any electronic music lover?
Mike: Our radio is designed for anyone who likes electronic music outside the standard. I try to filter out the most interesting tracks or albums from the genres House (Afro, Deep, Funky, Progressive, Tech and Melodic), Breaks, Electronica, Indie Dance, Minimal, Nu Disco, Downtempo, Ambient, Trance (Psy, Raw, Deep and Hypnotic) and Techno (Peak Time, Driving, Raw, Deep, Hypnotic and Hard). In addition, there are genre-bending ALL time classics from the last 40 years. When choosing shows, imperfect uniqueness is such a criterion for the DJ/radio host AND his music.
You also have to listen to it, because we allow the word, we also see ourselves as "educational radio". For example, our two professors from Trier University of Applied Sciences, who take everyone on an exciting journey into the future of renewable energy systems with their weekly show "Climate and Coal – The Campus Talk". Together, they will discuss how we can master the energy transition and make a personal contribution to mitigating climate change. Another example that sets us apart from the rest is the show "Gods House". As the name suggests, it is a new form of God's service. Basic knowledge from the Bible, explained in a comprehensible way and garnished with current as well as classic house music, which has its origins in Christian gospel. One of our most successful shows is "Innovation Germany". Every Thursday we talk for 30 minutes about current trends, innovations and with start-ups from the German start-up scene. Live over the phone. It's unbelievable how many innovations are being created in Germany. Our listeners learn things about the sourdough bread machine for everyone to sustainable shipping packaging. If that's not a reason to listen in.
13-Dimitris: What the future holds for EVOSONIC in 2024?
Mike: In 2024, we are not only entering our 27th year, but are also facing a new challenge. An association has been founded: EVOSONIC e.V. While our listenership has grown over the years and so have our costs, we face a reality: financial support is crucial. The independence and freedom with which our station has always broadcast can only be maintained through the generosity and commitment of many. If many contribute by becoming members, especially our Radio Hosts, we can continue to make electronic music and its values resound in all its diversity. Donations will help ensure that our station not only survives, but continues to bring inspiration, connection and joy to the world.

14-Dimitris: Please share your most funny and most serious incident that happen to you during your DJ or LIVE PA performance?
Mike: Too much to mention.
Patrizia: I wanted to throw something at Mike while he was on air. And the object just so perfectly hit the crossfader that there was absolute silence.
15-Your current Top 3 tracks with short comment:
Patrizia:
1. Where to – Acid Pauli Remix: everythings’s at ease.
2. Love Type – POOLCLVB: my summer hit in winter.
3. Tight Dope – Apaull: it’s just so refreshingly different.
Mike: This is almost never possible for me to tell. Here are three tracks I played most often in all my radio shows combined in 2023.
16-Dimitris: Can you describe your music as certain music genre such as trance, house, techno or your music exempts these categorizations? What is your opinion about hybrid styles and artists who are attempting to mix influences from various genres in their tracks?
Mike: I can rarely, if at all, categorize my productions into genres. However, it would be better in order to satisfy the "box thinking" of the masses and thus to achieve more success.
Patrizia: To be honest – this whole genre discussion s****.
17-Please choose for us your favourite holiday destination and share with us your most unforgettable holiday experience(good/bad)
Mike: I don’t have any free time.
Patrizia: Since I heard that “Chris Maico Schmidt” has a bunch of fans in Alaska (!), I imagine us going on vacation to Alaska with Mike having a couple of gigs there.
Thanks so much to Mike and Patrizia for their fantastic answers.
Thanks so much to Andrea Engels from BluFin Records for arranging this super nice interview
The history of EVOSONIC RADIO begins on May 1, 1997, as the world's first station specializing exclusively in electronic dance music. At that time, the radio station could be received throughout Germany via cable and satellite and broadcast live from Cologne.
EVOSONIC was not based on the concepts of traditional radio stations (so-called format radio), but largely left the design of the broadcasts to the music editors and DJs. These bring the current club sound 24 hours a day non-stop into the living rooms of the listeners. The shows cover all kinds of styles in the field of electronic music, where "word contributions" were not the focus.
At the end of the 1990s, the station became so successful that Mike S., whose real name was CHRIS MAICO SCHMIDT (then as now head of programming), received the German Dance Award in the category "Best Medium" in Hamburg in January 2000. Due to the loss of carrier frequencies (cables), EVOSONIC can no longer be received via cable as of June 1998. This is followed by the relocation of the station from Cologne to Munich. However, after unsuccessful negotiations on a new feed into the cable network, broadcasting had to be stopped for good on 1 October 1999.
The success of EVOSONIC was based not only on the completely new and innovative way of creating a station program, but also on the great response that the station was received by its audience. They loved the "different" culture at EVOSONIC and wanted to continue celebrating their music.
Attempts have been made again and again to bring EVOSONIC back to life. In 2010, Mike S. finally took over all name and trademark rights and put "EVOSONIC.DE" back online. With lasting success. In the coming years, large LIVE events will be held on the Internet again and again, thus maintaining the spirit.
In 2016, Mike founded his own record label EVOSONIC Records. The first release is the LP "Two Point Zero", which Mike releases as "Chris Maico Schmidt", as he calls himself an artist from now on – and EVOSONIC takes the next step towards "revival".
On May 1, 2017, the time has come: The station, which so many have sorely missed in the media landscape, will finally go back on air for its 20th anniversary!
24 hours a day – 7 days a week – 365 days a year. Still led by Chris-Maico Schmidt, various greats of electronic music are now represented with their own broadcasts on EVOSONIC, and new formats and new presenters are constantly being added. Not only from Germany, but from all over Europe.
The station quickly became the first port of call for electronic music in Germany. The mixture of independent live broadcasts, DJ mixes, a wide variety of styles and even talk radio quickly makes EVOSONIC one of the most popular stations of its guild again. Always a little different from the others – always with a good ear for the "special".
