Interview by Alex Wright
Gerome has been providing plenty of his own rich, uplifting melodic trance to the underground scene this year predominantly on labels Elliptical Sun Energies and the newly formed Emergent Skies. Following on from his dreamy, evocative vocal collaboration with local Lebanese vocalist Cassandra Grey 'Black Bird' from earlier this year, he recently released 'Into The Unknown' which has seen support from DJs Aly & Fila (Future Sound Winner), Daniel Kandi, ReOrder, Tempo Giusto, and more. As he is creating such a buzz with his productions, I am excited to find out what inspired Gerome to begin his career in making music and learn about his production processes, equipment, and future plans.

Interview was written and conducted by Alex Wright, Electronic Music Producer & 1Mix Radio host.

Alex Wright: Hi Gerome, pleasure to have you here! If you don't mind can you please introduce yourself with a few facts about who you are, where you are from, and what you are currently doing in day-to-day life?

Gerome: Hey guys, I'm Gerome! I'm just another bedroom producer that's always trying to improve my skills and take them to another level. I also work as a part time sound engineer in a radio station and I produce music for ads. I also play video games.

Alex Wright: When did you first start producing and what inspired you to pursue it?

Gerome: I started DJing when I was 14 and producing when I was 16. I used to make Electro House, back when it was the "in" trend. What pushed me to pursue it was one night when I won a DJ competition in a festival, I ended up playing in front of 1000 people and it felt so good! Also my lovely friends who keep pushing me and motivating me to work!

Alex Wright: I really loved your track 'Black Bird' with Cassandra Grey which came out on Elliptical Sun Energies earlier this year and saw support from DJs Armin van Buuren, M.I.K.E. Push, Ori Uplift, and Sneijder to name a few, how did you originally get in touch with Cassandra and begin working with her?

Gerome: Well, she lives across the street! Me and her brother have been friends for ages. There was a day when we heard her singing some Cosmic Gate song and we decided to have a go at collaborating with her to see what we could come up with. Recording with Sandra was so much fun! Besides her incredible voice, the vocal melodies she comes up with are great. Personally this is how I love making vocal tracks: put down some chords, compose the vocal line and then work on the arrangement of the track. Not the other way around!

Alex Wright: Are there any producers in the scene which have helped you shape your sound to the way it is today?

Gerome: Yes! Asking producer friends and DJs for feedback is a must for every producer. If I have to choose one friend it would be Farid, I always ask for his approach to my tracks and his feedback is always effective. Dennis Pedersen and Daniel Kandi also helped me improve my mixdowns.

Alex Wright: What do you think is your biggest frustration or most difficult part of producing tracks?

Gerome: Nothing really, producing is fun in every aspect. Sometimes my mind gets blocked while trying to get the mix perfect and I start overdoing things. Taking a 1-2 day break of not listening to the track at all then checking again with fresh ears does the job.

Alex Wright: What is your favourite synth and effect VST plugin to use?

Gerome: I use Massive, Sylenth1 and Spire for my synths mostly. For effects I like built-in Ableton ones as well as the ArtsAcoustic reverb.

Alex Wright: If there is one thing you would like to improve about your productions, what would it be?

Gerome: I think trying new sounds and listening to new tracks will always push skills forward. Maybe improving my mixing, which I think gets better with time.

Alex Wright: Which is your favourite track that you have made so far?

Gerome: Black Bird.

Alex Wright: What are your future plans within music? Are there any new releases ready to come out soon?

Gerome: I have an original coming on Always Alive Recordings which I'm very excited about. Also 2 collabs with Sandra, one is a follow-up to Black Bird coming on Emergent Skies in December. Vocals in the breakdown only, just the way I like it! And another original on AVA Recordings!

Alex Wright: If there was one main goal for you to strive towards in the future in music, what would you want to achieve the most?

Gerome: My main goal is to keep making good music and inspire more people.

Alex Wright: Awesome! Many thanks Gerome for taking the time out to talk to us today! It's great to hear from you, and I wish you all the best for the future. Anybody wanting to buy a copy of the 'Into The Unknown' can do so via all download stores NOW, if you haven't heard it make sure you take a listen to both tracks included within this interview.

Guest Reviewer Alex Wright ahead of his monthly radio show Trance Encounters that is streamed every first Friday of the month on 1mix radio  presents his top 5 anthems for April 2016. He describes in his own words why these tracks have attracted his attention as professionally educated music producer and most importantly trance fan. Enjoy reading them and put in your dairy to listen his radio show.

Ciaran McAuley - Isla [Digital Society Recordings]
This guy's been on fire as of late pushing his own trademark sound that feels organic and natural in the way that it's produced. Full of warmth and satisfying melodies, his latest track 'Isla' was recently supported on A State Of Trance radio show and came second in the Future Favourite poll (one place in front of my own track 'Galactica'). His style has everything that a proper uplifting record should have, without trying to emulate the boshiness of the new generation of uplifting with maximized energy but rather focusing on the soul of the music with beautiful chord progressions and angelic female vocal refrains. This is music for blissed out summer weather which shouldn't be too far round
the corner! (Hopefully.)

Daniel Kandi & Zack Mia - Sector 7 [Always Alive Recordings]
Coming back to the front line of his own label, Mr. Daniel Kandi has delivered another spotless production alongside the great up and coming talent Zack Mia. A nice tough groove gets things started with a classic rolling bassline to boot, and nice atmospherics swirl around in the backstage with spacious supersaws lining the sonic spectrum with anticipation of what is to come in the break. Subtle soft arps and vocal pads build up the excitement before the huge pads open and give way to a very catchy main hook line. This one shines bright as an outstanding uplifter and is bound to set a huge smile upon anybody's face, particularly on a buzzing dancefloor!

Gautum Khaw - Moonglade (Sam Laxton's Moonshine Remix) [Beyond Belief Recordings]
Another newcomer to the scene is Sam Laxton from Newcastle, previously known for making tight and impressive Dubstep and Electro House but has recently turned his hand to the sound of pure uplifting trance. After releasing a massive track called 'The Rise' on Solarstone's Pure Trance label, he has been selected for remix duties on Amos & Riot Night's very own Beyond Belief Recordings. Boasting clean drums and tight basslines in the intro, he raises the energy with a soft and subtle pluck melody and smooth pads before winding things down into a light piano melody line during the break. A great main melody shows that this guy has a great musical ear and stylistically it sits just between the area of energetic and beautiful trance which is what I love the most.

Plutian - Ashgray [Elliptical Sun Energies]
South Korean producer Plutian has been making some excellent tracks as of late and this is another one of them. Currently sitting at number 40 in Beatport's Top 100 Releases chart, 'Ashgray' features floaty underwater melodies and gorgeous airy pads which are complimented by grand string layers and a simple yet effective main pluck. Driving the track along is a crunchy saw bassline which sits nicely in the mix with the punchy groove making this an all-round winner for any uplifting trance fan.

The Ashk One - Paradise (Derek Palmer Remix) [Levitated / Silent Shore recordings]
Also receiving a surprise ASOT airplay this month was my good friend Derek Palmer, who has turned in an expertly produced remix of a lower BPM progressive trance track released on Manuel Rocca's Silent Shore Records sublabel Levitated Music. A tight groove carries this one along with dreamy melodies and breathy vocals, while floaty pads begin to surface their way into the foreground beside soft piano touches. The breakdown in this one is truly to die for, literally taking you to paradise. Pure goosebumps all over from the atmosphere created with the textures that  Derek has so maticulously crafted together, making the climax a proper hands-in-the-air, jump-up-and-down-job. Melodic, uplifting trance served just the way I like it.

Guest Reviewer Alex Wright ahead of his monthly radio show Trance Encounters on 1mix radio every first Friday of the month presents his top 5 anthems for this month and explains in his own words why these particular tracks make him happy and what elements through his own experience as producer appreciates more.

Sean Tyas - Ambush (Original Mix) [Black Hole Recordings]

Released on his Degeneration Volume Two EP last December, this thumping Tech-Trance crossover has been re-released on Sean's debut album this month along with 13 other fantastic tracks that feature influences ranging from intense psy-trance, powerful melodic uplifting, tearout Drum & Bass, liquid, downtempo, and breaks to say the least. This track stands out as one of my favourites, as it proves that Sean Tyas' musical influences range from far places that all add up to make Trance great. Not much melodic content in this one, as it's a pure heads down filler track which could fit well into any Trance set in the higher BPM ranges. I would personally love to hear more tracks in this vain being created and played in Trance sets, as it adds for great diversity amongst more melodic tunes.

Pedersen & Farid - Going Back (Area51 Remix) [Elliptical Sun Energies]

With support from the likes of Aly & Fila, Armin van Buuren, Dan Stone, Daniel Kandi, and Manuel Le Saux, this remix release of the label's first catalog entry did an exceptionally good job at showing how a great melody can be transformed into equally special pieces of art by two quality producers. My personal favourite out of Mhammed El Alami's more soaring, uplifting take and Area51's tech-tinged version has to be the latter, as it provides a great "hands in the air" breakdown moment before flipping back in to rolling Tech grooves and teasing the brilliant melody back in. Played by Dan Stone at The Gallery last month, this remix just pips it to the post, however I have to also recommend the equally brilliant Mhammed El Alami remix as well.

Cold Rush & Mhammed El Alami - Aviana (Original Mix) [Always Alive Recordings]

In case you haven't heard of these two amazing talented artists before, I suggest you check both of their respective back catalogues, particularly their recent works. Both have an excellent winning formula for quality, powerful melodic trance and here they put their heads together to make 'Aviana', released on Daniel Kandi's Always Alive Recordings. Driving, straight forward grooves carry this monster along with rhythmic rolling basslines and an infectious main melody which sends the climax into pure, soaring euphoria.

Lewis Duggleby & Mark Landragin - Rotation (Amir Hussain Remix) [Digital Society Recordings]

Another excellent offering from Amir, this time in the form of a remix for Trance Sanctuary promoters Lewis Duggleby and Mark Landragin. Amir's sound has been a big inspiration to me as of late, with his excellent layering and EQ placement to create a beefy, driving and anthemic sound that has proven to work great on the dancefloor. Completely changing the key from the original and providing plenty of tension and a rewarding main section, this interpretation of the excellent original shows how Amir can effortlessly remix a track to make it his own.

Allen & Envy And Allen Watts - Vega (UDM Remix) [Together Recordings]

Released in its original form at the beginning of this year and picking up support from the likes of Armin van Buuren and countless others, the Leicester duo Allen & Envy's own 'Together Recordings' delivers this remix release which adds further diversity to the excellent melody in the original. Dmitriy Uskov aka UDM's remix is my favourite out of the package, with thumping drive and huge lead sounds making it perfect for any peak time set.

Arcuate - Pismo [Elliptical Sun Energies]

ESE have had a strong start since launching at the end of last summer, pushing the lush, melodic side of Trance that labels like Anjunabeats were renowned for championing. This freebie from label mainstay Arcuate was released as a thank you for them reaching 1,000 likes on their Facebook page this month, and it's nothing short of mesmerising, featuring playful vocal chops and floaty pianos, with a gorgeous pluck melody and enchanting chord progression to boot.

Additional info:

Ferry Tayle & Stonevalley - Battle Of The Barrels (Daniel Kandi's Classic Remix) [Always Alive Recordings]

The master is back on his own Enhanced sublabel Always Alive Recordings, this time remixing Ferry Tayle & Stonevalley's collaboration from Ferry's album 'The Wizard'. It's evident in that Daniel is the ultimate perfectionist within the uplifting subgenre, layering meticulous rhythmic basslines together on top of clean, punchy drums and smooth pads, along with a huge anthemic lead line that carries the climax into soaring euphoria.

Additional info:

Jackob Rocksonn - Dark Forest [Mondo Records]

I just had to include this Polish powerhouse in here again for this month's reviews, he's been on fire as of late churning out production after production. His sound has developed drastically over the latter half of last year and the level of detail in his sound design has become nothing short of staggering. This latest track from him demonstrates his constantly evolving ability to create well-rounded dark progressive trance that is full of tension and atmosphere.

Additional info:

Jochen Miller - Lost Connection (Andres Sanchez Remix) [Exclusive Promo]

As expected, Andres Sanchez has lifted this classic into 140bpm melodic Trance heaven, with a huge buildup and massively rewarding payoff! His mixdowns are always on point, with excellent basslines and a melodic reworking of the original riff which I do have a big soft spot for. Andres is one of my favourite producers within uplifting Trance, and this remix is no exception as regards to the quality of his work.

Mohammed Khalila - Sakhnin [Always Alive Recordings]

Another Always Alive release from this month, 17 year old Mohammed Khalila from Israel makes his label debut with this lovely uplifter. Bright, clean production makes this track groove nicely into the break section where warm pads come to the forefront along with the catchy vocal chop line and supporting piano part. The main part of the pudding however is the beautiful lead melody, which is unique and memorable, building up to the powerful main section which is pure hands in the air, peak time material.
