Two great forces in trance, John Askew and David Forbes, combine for their first-ever collaboration in the form of “Vanquish” — a hard-hitting tech trance roller with blistering beats, drilling 303 acids, and a huge riff. This is peak-time power with all the punch you’d expect from this combination, dropping on the label right before David joins the fold at VII’s 10th birthday in Manchester. Full power.

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]John Askew and David Forbes’ collaborative track “Vanquish” is a masterclass in modern tech trance production, showcasing exceptional technical prowess and creative synergy. At 140 BPM, the track delivers an unrelenting rhythmic drive supported by tight, heavy kicks and metallic techno basslines that sustain energy from start to finish. Its groove is meticulously layered, balancing the relentless propulsion of the percussion with hypnotic acid patterns that evolve throughout the arrangement. The melodic hooks emerge through swirling synths and harmonically rich euphoric leads in the breakdown, providing an emotional contrast to the darker, more aggressive main body of the track. This careful interplay between harmonic layers and rhythmic elements ensures that the momentum never falters while maintaining a cohesive narrative flow. The production techniques employed in “Vanquish” are exemplary, with pristine sound design and high-end spatial effects that create a fully immersive listening experience. The drops and build-ups are engineered with precision, using dynamic filtering, reverb swells, and tension-building risers that seamlessly transition between sections. The use of distortion on the 303 acid lines and subtle stereo imaging in the lead synths contributes to a wide, club-ready mix that maintains loudness without sacrificing dynamic range. The arrangement demonstrates originality and clear artistic identity, with structured storytelling that progresses naturally toward its climactic peak. Even without vocals, the track achieves emotional resonance, drawing listeners into its high-intensity journey while retaining catchy motifs that encourage repeated plays. Scientific research supports the positive impact of such high-energy electronic music on mental health and wellness activities, including fitness and group exercise classes. Studies indicate that rhythmic entrainment to electronic dance music enhances mood, increases dopamine release, and improves cardiovascular endurance during physical activity (Karageorghis & Priest, 2012). Immersive soundscapes and uplifting harmonic progressions such as those found in “Vanquish” can contribute to reduced stress levels and heightened motivation (Thoma et al., 2013). Additionally, the track’s pulse-driven energy and emotionally rich breakdowns stimulate both psychological arousal and mental focus, making it ideal for wellness settings such as spin classes, high-intensity interval training, or even guided movement meditation sessions where music-induced flow states are desired. The track’s club and festival suitability is unquestionable, with its extended intro and outro structures allowing seamless integration into DJ sets, and its BPM consistency facilitating effortless beat-matching and looping. Each cue point offers potential for creative layering, while the progression maintains a dynamic energy flow that is likely to elicit strong crowd reactions. Through its combination of technical excellence, emotional expressiveness, and physical impact, “Vanquish” succeeds not only as a peak-time trance weapon but as a track that enriches human experience through both physiological and psychological channels.  #PureGold Love IT [/content]

From the hands of U.K. mainstay John Askew comes a belter brimming with pure, uplifting energy. Driven by lush, atmospheric pads, commanding drums, and melodies that evoke power and emotion from every angle, Panoramic is simply breathtaking.
John mentions in his instagram "When I was remixing John O’Callaghan’s Pebble Beach I kept developing additional ideas that were surplus to requirement so I pushed all those across into a new project that would evolve into many variations as it developed but the end result was Panoramic which is my favourite JA single to date. Love this track, especially the strings and pads chord progression which I wrote drawing inspiration from the sublime chords in Underworld - To Heal. Different chords but similar vibe. Emotional, melancholic but with a strong overtone of hope. Panoramic is out and available to stream on all platforms."

[item value="10"]John Askew - Panoramic[/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]John Askew’s Panoramic is an exceptional trance production that encapsulates the essence of high-energy, emotionally charged dance music. Operating at 140 BPM, the track draws from early 2000s U.K. trance influences while simultaneously embracing a futuristic edge. The rhythmic foundation is powered by driving basslines and chunky, tightly compressed drums that provide unwavering groove and momentum. Acidic overtones and well-layered percussive elements are intelligently placed to propel the track forward, ensuring seamless transitions and build-ups that keep listeners fully engaged. From a compositional perspective, Panoramic thrives on its melodic hooks and harmonic layering. The strings and pad chord progressions, inspired by the sublime emotionality of Underworld’s To Heal, convey a melancholic yet hopeful narrative. These harmonic layers are enriched by lush atmospheric textures and carefully modulated synths, which expand the stereo field and create a sense of immersion. The arrangement demonstrates originality through the judicious use of automation to evolve energy levels, while filter sweeps and spatial effects enhance the dynamic range and storytelling capabilities of the track. Production-wise, Askew employs meticulous sound design techniques to achieve a balanced yet powerful mix. Sidechain compression is effectively used to allow the kick and bass to cut through, while the midrange is given clarity through precise EQing of pads and leads. The track’s loudness is competitive yet maintains adequate headroom to preserve dynamic impact. The seamless club-ready intro and outro structure ensures BPM consistency and ease of synchronization, making it a DJ-friendly tool for festival and club performances. Beyond its technical brilliance, Panoramic has demonstrable positive effects on mental health and physical performance. Research has shown that high-tempo music around 130–150 BPM can enhance exercise endurance and improve mood through the release of endorphins (Karageorghis & Priest, 2012). The track’s uplifting harmonic resolution and emotional overtones can support mindfulness or meditative states during wellness and fitness sessions, while simultaneously reducing perceived effort in high-intensity workouts. Furthermore, studies indicate that music with strong rhythmic predictability can stimulate dopamine release, leading to enhanced motivation and cognitive engagement (Salimpoor et al., 2015). Overall, Panoramic excels as a multi-dimensional trance anthem: technically polished, emotionally resonant, and physiologically beneficial. It stands as a testament to John Askew’s mastery of production and his ability to craft music that not only ignites dance floors but also uplifts the human mind and body. #PureGold Love iT [/content]

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]AA Meeting, the dynamic collaboration between trance legends John Askew and Activa, showcases an exceptional blend of technical prowess and creative flair in their track "Flashback." Operating at a vigorous 142 BPM, this uplifting instrumental trance masterpiece exemplifies meticulous production techniques and a masterful grasp of sonic architecture. From a technical perspective, "Flashback" is anchored by its robust arrangement and immersive sound design. The foundation is laid with energetic, pulsating basslines crafted through precise sidechain compression, ensuring they maintain a rhythmic synergy with the track's thumping kicks. These kicks, likely enhanced with layered samples and subtle transient shaping, provide a driving force that underscores the track's relentless energy. The percussion elements, including the pounding drums, are meticulously processed with high-pass filtering and reverb automation to create spatial depth and dynamic movement. The melancholic piano melody that leads the track introduces an emotional nuance, its reverb-drenched timbre intertwining seamlessly with the underlying acid overtones. These acid lines, likely generated using classic analog synths with resonant filter tweaks and modulation envelopes, inject a raw, hypnotic edge that contrasts beautifully with the melodic components. As the track progresses, big swirling synths come into play, constructed through layered oscillator stacks and complex modulation matrices. These synths build tension and anticipation, employing techniques like filter sweeps, LFO-driven panning, and gradual reverb decay reduction to heighten intensity. The breakdown stands out for its extended, atmospheric quality, featuring a rich tapestry of synthy plucks and airy harps. The plucks, possibly achieved with subtractive synthesis and careful envelope shaping, provide a crisp, ethereal texture. The harps add a delicate, whimsical touch, enhanced by lush reverb tails and stereo widening effects. This section masterfully builds towards the climax, utilizing crescendoing white noise sweeps, pitch risers, and strategic silence to amplify the eventual drop. The climax itself is a payoff of epic proportions, designed for that quintessential "hands in the air" moment. The elements converge in a powerful synthesis of melody, rhythm, and texture, showcasing AA Meeting's deep understanding of trance music's emotional and technical dimensions. #PureGold indeed—"Flashback" is a testament to the intricate art of trance production, where every sonic detail is crafted with precision and passion. #LoveIT [/content]

We are evolving the concept of VII.

We are changing to an exciting new format which will allow us to release music from anyone and not just the seven focus artists on the label.

While the existing format of the label does give a focused spotlight on a hugely talented group of core artists, we also feel it excludes so much good music that we get sent, music that fits our mantra and vibe perfectly.

Also with this evolution we want to evolve our booking policy for VII events - meaning we will now book artists from the list of producers that have previously released on the label. These changes will avoid repetition and predictability, two things we don’t want on our path forwards.

With this exciting change we feel our brand will become more diverse and above all will be able to present a much wider range of music - but all aligned with the core sound and style.

And so with that change we’re now proud to present our first VII release that falls under the new format - this is Drop It from the utterly brilliant Zach Zlov who we’re thrilled to now bring under our wing with his futuristic tech sound that that been blowing our minds for years.

A new chapter begins with Drop It, by @zachzlov - out on VII this Friday!

John Askew commented about the track: “I can’t tell you how excited I am about this release. It’s well documented that Zach is my favourite tech producer and I love everything he makes but this one takes the fucking biscuit. It is IN-SANE. I played this out for the first time on my Asia tour last year, including at Transmission during our AA Meeting set and it just takes the dance floor apart. The quality of the production is amazing, so full, powerful. Zach is a master and it’s an honour to have him release on VII”.

[item value="10"]Zach Zlov - Drop It [/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"] VII is an underground collective of boundary-pushing artists, renowned for their refusal to conform to musical norms. Their latest offering, "Drop It" by Zach Zlov, exemplifies this ethos with a sophisticated blend of dark tech-inspired elements and meticulous sound design. From a technical standpoint, "Drop It" is 142 BPM masterclass in production. The track opens with wild, driving dark techy basslines, crafted through precise layering of distorted sub-bass frequencies and mid-range growls, creating a rich, textured low-end. The pounding moody percussion is built using a combination of synthesized drum hits and processed live drum samples, giving the rhythm section both punch and organic flair. The kicks are tightly compressed, offering a driving force that anchors the track, while the live-like drums add dynamic nuances, achieved through subtle velocity changes and reverb automation. Zach Zlov’s use of dark, swirling synths adds another layer of complexity. These synths are likely created with analog gear or analog emulation plugins, enriched with modulation effects such as phasers and flangers to achieve a swirling, evolving texture. This contributes to the track’s rough, raw atmosphere and intense drive, effectively immersing the listener. One of the standout features is the AI-produced spoken vocal samples. These samples are not mere placeholders but integral components designed to hypnotize the crowd. The AI algorithms probably involved text-to-speech synthesis with pitch and formant modulation to achieve a unique, robotic yet human-like timbre. The vocal processing includes delay and reverb effects, adding spatial depth and enhancing the hypnotic quality. The breakdown section is a testament to Zlov’s prowess in tension building. It’s mysterious and dystopic, featuring siren-like sounds that are crafted using pitch-bent synth layers combined with filtered white noise sweeps. The background ambiance is enriched with subtle granular synthesis effects, creating an otherworldly soundscape that maintains listener anticipation. As the track builds towards its climax, automation plays a critical role. Filter cutoffs, resonance boosts, and gradual increases in reverb size and decay times create a sense of rising energy. The climax is characterized by an unstoppable surge of sound, with head-down, aggressive energy that is both uplifting and cathartic—hallmarks of a perfect tech trance experience. [item value="10"]John Askew - We've Talked Enough[/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]John Askew has once again captivated the trance music scene with his electrifying track, "We've Talked Enough." Following the triumphant release of his recent album, this 8-minute epic piece is a testament to Askew's mastery in creating euphoric UK Trance. Operating at a brisk 140 BPM, the track embodies all the hallmarks of the genre that fans have trusted and adored for years. Askew's technical prowess shines through with energetic, pulsating basslines that lay a robust foundation. The punchy kicks are perfectly calibrated, providing a relentless drive that keeps the listener hooked. Metallic drums contribute to the track's powerful structure, while a subliminal alarm-like synth hook serves as a central motif, propelling the track forward with an undeniable vigor. This deceptively simple yet powerful riff is a standout feature, promising to move mountains with its infectious energy. The production quality is further highlighted in the track's meticulously crafted breakdowns. The first breakdown is expertly designed to build anticipation, characterized by a gigantic drum roll that introduces the alerting synth hook alongside swirling synths and sophisticated effects. This section is a masterclass in tension building, setting the stage for what is to follow. The second breakdown transforms the listening experience by incorporating ambient noises and percussive dark melodies. It crescendos into a massive climax, driven by a manic drumroll that seamlessly introduces new Ibiza club-style synth riffs. These elements are cleverly interwoven with acid overtones, nudging the track towards a more hypnotic, euphoric, yet still dark and sinister trance direction. Are we looking at the final artist album from John Askew?? It is after all his first since his ‘Z List Uber Star’, which is currently closing in on its 20th anniversary. Add to that the duality of ‘A Room Full Of Pros & Cons’s title; the faintly Last Supper-ish lean of its cover, not to mention some flagrant nose-thumbing of LP conventions, and, well, the question could at least be asked.

As with so much in life though there’s more to that than meets the eye. Between John’s production schedule (breakneck), day to day roles in artist management, international touring (both as a DJ and live act), label management, event organising and his ‘open-all-hours’ industry rep, the man’s had his hands way full. Lesser wonder then that it’s taken him five years to close all the ‘P’s and curve all the ‘C’s on ‘A Room Full Of Pros & Cons’.

The title’s John’s summation of half a lifetime’s worth of observations and experiences, garnered at the business end of the electronic music industry. One that hopscotched him from England’s unchained free party scene to Ministry of Sound resident, and from being managed by the biggest agencies to, himself, managing legendary names. All the while mind you, refusing to compromise on absolutely anything … ever. That’s always going to leave a mark, all of which has been poured into this album.

In ways big and small, subtle or big-print, ‘A Room Full Of Pros & Cons’s track titles (‘Running In The Dark’, ‘Be Careful What You Wish For’, ‘Take A Breath’, ‘When Darkness Comes’, ‘I Want Your Soul’ and ‘Afterburner’ to mention a few) each speak to its theme. Many are fueled by John’s signature sound, one as dependably immediate, tenacious, and floorward-thinking as any DJ from his bloc. Key to their potency is the intuitively high-wire balancing act Askew strikes between darkness and light, the subtle and the visceral, always ensuring there’s nuance and alchemic colour (or shadow!) in every floor roar.

Others tracks project their power through alternate studio methods. ‘Be Careful What You Wish For’ (featuring singer Lyonheart) is a soul searing, breakbeat scattered affair, while ‘Grave Digger’ features a cavernous feel and apocalyptic polemic (voiced by Askew), straight from the darkest ‘Cons’ corner of the ‘Room’. Regarding that “flagrant convention nose-thumbing”, ’00.00’ sees John slide some doors with the album’s originally envisioned overture. Now track 5, it forms a brilliant palate-cleanse, ahead of the transcendental ‘Take A Breath’, (a collaboration with Sikh singer, songwriter and philanthropist, Manika Kaur) and the instantly infectious hook of ‘Running In The Dark’.

Artists of John’s ilk don’t tend to have vocal muses, and it’s debatable whether Ohio-born/Nashville-based singer Shelby Merry fills that role. As you cross John’s Room’ though, vocally, lyrically and significantly she features three times, each track with its own individual tone and something-to-say tale.

So, if this does prove to be John’s last LP hurrah, what’s he leaving us with? Well at the very least, 15 brilliantly honed pieces of music, fused together to create a cohesive, journeying bravura, that’ll delight his diehards, while drawing others to the flame. Half industry cheer, half-cautionary tale, ‘A Room Full Of Pros & Cons’ arrives on physical and digital formats Sept 27. Now … don’t say you weren’t warned.  FIND HERE

01. John Askew & Shelby Merry – Wild Horse (Extended Mix)
02. John Askew & Shelby Merry - Wild Horse (Siskin Remix)

‘Wild Horse’ is John Askew’s latest collaboration with Shelby Merry and the final single to be released ahead of ‘A Room Full Of Pros And Cons’ - his hotly anticipated third longform. Also taking the role of the album’s swansong finale, comparative to anything John’s released before ‘Wild Horse’ is a markedly different animal ...

Seasoned JA watchers will immediately sense the change in gear, tone and intent: somewhat akin to an out of body experience for the English producer. ‘Wild Horse’s intense, humid atmospheres haze the studio’s windows, as its beats kick with a slower, more brooding resonance. Around them artfully drawn strings, celestially streaming fx and the most casual or breakbeat loops all raise its pressure. Think mid-nineties Massive Attack, with heavier drums and you’re not far from the mark.

Having previously cut her teeth on ‘Steady & Stronger’ and ‘When Darkness Comes’, Nashville’s Shelby Merry is already a thoroughbred Askew collaborator. ‘Wild Horse’ may be a case of ‘saving the best (or at least most intense!) till last’. From the opposing perspective she relates a tale of deception, gaslighting and mindgames, baring her soul to convey real world conversations and experiences. Contrastingly, she shares her story of ‘girl-meets-wrong-boy’, leaving it up to the audience to conclude who’s saying what - and to what end.

John deferred on the remix, passing ‘Wild Horse’s reins to an outfit eminently capable of handling complex lyrics (you could even say they’ve built a career on it!). For something as intimate as ‘Wild Horse’, progressive forms the perfect bedrock, which is exactly what Sue and Suzanne supply. Drum roll, pulsing LFO, reverb-heavy percussion, raincry harmonies and Siskin’s fluid melodies all lend Shelby’s song a curiously optimistic filter.

John’s Original ‘Wild Horse’ arrived on the 9th HERE, while Siskin’s club orientation lands one week later on Aug 16 HERE. ‘A Room Full Of Pros & Cons’ will be released 27th Sept. 2024 and you can pre-order here

[item value="10"]John Askew & Shelby Merry - Wild Horse (Original & Siskin Remix) [/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]John Askew & Shelby Merry collaborate for the stunning track Wild Horse. The original is a stunning breaks anthem with dark moody atmosphere and the fantastic indie rock magical voice by Shelby. The result is a winner that will manage easily to carry your mind away and appreciate the superb story that the emotional lyrics describe with so much power, dynamism and intensity.  Siskin are the beloved female duo that always impress with her productions and their remix is coolest version that you didn't expect to get. Rather than the full on tech trance remix, Siskin add their flirting melodic progressive touch that moves in and out of trance and house with cool dark melodic techno dystopian synthy lines leading to the euphoric feeling free type of climax that floats so beautifully and encourage you to let the inhibitions and adopt your hidden free spirit. #PureGold Love IT [/content]

John Askew drops the next single from his forthcoming artist album. I Want Your Soul is a powerful vocal collaboration with rising star of the raw / hypnotic scene Sinful Biz. Fusing disco grooves with fast paced trance kick and rolling bass the track builds with funk and groove all the way to the massive breakdown and drop. The infectious vocal hook that grabs you by the heart brings the temperature up further before the track slams back in with more driving, funk laden beats. Sinful Biz’s remix completes the package nicely with a darker take that pushes the floor with those 7am locked groove vibes. Hypnotic and intoxicating.

John Askew breaths new life into his 2010 Discover Records hit The Witch with a fresh 2023 interpretation that pushes into harder, more driving direction. That trademark riff which builds layer upon layer bringing in the higher harmonics for a devastatingly effective, eye rolling crescendo, remains but now a fuller, tighter, more energetic production sits as the framework behind it. Here she is - just in time for Halloween, Askew’s ’23 take of The Witch.

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]John Askew is on great shape delivering constantly superb forward thinking trance anthems like Running in the Dark. It's one of those tracks that combine infectious super catchy vocals with energetic psy tech trance basslines, dirty greedy synthy riffs, acid overtones packed with endless amount of energy that simply can crank up your sound system. It's uplifting trance but with attitude of psy trance and the roughness of tech trance turning this into one of the biggest trance anthems of the year. Totally unique different and ultra exciting. #PureGold Love IT [/content]

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]John Askew is definitely one of the real heroes in trance music scene. He produced countless tracks on various labels and now he debuts on Armind with clean, clear and crispy uplifting feel good trance sound on the track Aces Hi. The track is written by the book of UK uplifting trance sound with pumping energetic driving basslines, thumping grooves and sharp kicks while on top the darker sinister synthy melodies are transformed in the breakdown into beautiful feel good euphoric epic melodies along with some melancholic synthy plucks that will bring Ibiza and summer holidays in your mind.
