[item value="10"]Bjerkestrand - Skyfritt [/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Hailing from Oslo, Norway, Morten Bjerkestrand is a fresh face in the Pure family, and his debut track "Skyfritt"—a Danish and Norwegian word meaning "cloudless sky"—is an apt reflection of the track’s luminous, uplifting vibe. "Skyfritt" stands as a testament to Pure trance's ethos, blending technical prowess with emotive storytelling through sound. At its core, "Skyfritt" is built around a meticulously crafted 136 BPM framework, characteristic of classic Pure trance, providing both the energy needed for peak-time sets and the emotional depth to resonate beyond the dancefloor. The production showcases an intricate layering technique where bell-like melodies sparkle over a bed of lush, atmospheric pads. These melodic elements are crafted using high-resolution digital synthesizers, likely leaning on virtual analog models for that warmth and clarity synonymous with the genre. What sets "Skyfritt" apart is its masterful use of dynamic range and spatial effects. The track employs a variety of trancy melodic progressions and effects, including reverb-drenched synth plucks and ethereal harp lines that are carefully EQ’d to create a sense of vastness—mirroring the expansive, cloudless sky its title evokes. The breakdown is particularly noteworthy: a long, chilling section where electronic dreamscapes take over, driven by evolving filter sweeps and subtle automation that keeps the listener engaged. The main melody emerges gradually, utilizing a breaks-like sequence that builds anticipation seamlessly. The climactic buildup is where Bjerkestrand’s arrangement skills shine. Layer upon layer of sugar-sweet melodies interweave, each harmonically complementary, creating a euphoric crescendo that feels both inevitable and exhilarating. The choice of synth patches—likely a combination of soft synths and hardware modules—adds to the track’s rich tonal palette, while sidechain compression ensures that the kick drum maintains its punch without overpowering the melodic elements. For any Pure trance DJ, "Skyfritt" is a must-play due to its perfect balance of technical sophistication and emotional resonance. Its versatility allows it to fit seamlessly into a variety of set contexts, from sunlit outdoor festivals to intimate club nights. Bjerkestrand’s attention to detail in both sound design and arrangement makes "Skyfritt" not just a track to be heard, but an experience to be felt—an essential weapon in any trance DJ’s arsenal. #PureGold Love it. The track opens with a lush, lapping-waves intro that sets a serene, immersive atmosphere, achieved through carefully layered field recordings and subtle reverb processing to create spatial depth. Haunting vocal stabs are delicately woven into the mix, treated with ethereal delays and modulation effects that enhance their hypnotic quality without overshadowing the instrumental components. The understated, sonorous lead melody stands out as a hallmark of progressive trance, crafted using warm analog synth patches that evolve subtly over time. The interplay of hypnotic rhythms is anchored by deep, pulsating basslines, designed with sidechain compression to breathe seamlessly with the moody kicks. These kicks, characterized by a punchy yet subdued timbre, maintain groove while leaving space for the melodic elements to flourish. Tribalish percussion elements are intricately programmed, featuring syncopated patterns that add dynamic drive and rhythmic complexity. This 140 BPM uplifting masterpiece not only embodies the spirit of classic trance but also showcases cutting-edge production techniques that make it a standout addition to any uplifting trance DJ set. From a technical standpoint, "Blue Sky" excels in its meticulous sound design and production quality. The track opens with pounding techy drums and thumping kicks, meticulously layered to create a driving energy that captures the listener's attention immediately. The kicks are sharp and punchy, achieved through precise EQing and sidechain compression techniques that ensure they cut through the mix without overwhelming other elements. The pulsating basslines are crafted using a combination of analog and digital synthesis, providing a warm yet dynamic foundation that complements the rhythm section perfectly. The melodic elements are where "Blue Sky" truly shines. The main melody, epic and optimistic, is constructed using rich, layered synths that evolve throughout the track. Maywave employs advanced modulation techniques, including filter sweeps and dynamic reverb automation, to add depth and movement, creating an immersive auditory experience. The breakdown section is particularly noteworthy; it features atmospheric layers with heavenly harps performing the main melody, enhanced by ethereal pads and subtle background textures. This section transitions seamlessly into synthy plucks, gradually building tension through the use of rising white noise, pitch risers, and strategic drum fills. The climax is a euphoric explosion of uplifting energy, characterized by wide, lush synth leads and a powerful, driving beat. The use of stereo imaging and spatial effects, such as delay and reverb, gives the track a vast, expansive feel, making it ideal for large festival stages and club environments. The meticulous attention to detail in the mixdown and mastering processes ensures that every frequency range is well-balanced, allowing the track to sound pristine on any sound system. For uplifting trance DJs, "Blue Sky" is an invaluable addition to their sets. Its energetic tempo, emotional melodies, and high production values make it versatile for peak-time moments or as a euphoric closer. Progressive didn’t give birth to the mix-comp, but through the fabled likes of ‘Northern Exposure’ and ‘Global Underground’, it did elevate it to a higher form. With its eponymous album series, it is to these lofty heights that Solarstone’s Pure Progressive aspires. In order to reach them however, radical approaches have been required!

Mixcomps and albums are works of art and heart, which their creators can pour months, sometimes even years into. However, to pull both off simultaneously, and as a dual-release no less … well, that takes a special kind!

It is one with precedent though, as both Orkidea and Forerunners have previously delivered (in 2020 and 2022 respectively). Early last year, Solarstone laid the same challenge at the feet of another long-time musical likemind (and regular Pure Progressive contributor), Slam Duck. The rest you can guess ... FFWD a dozen or so months and the label is sitting on the cusp of ‘Pure Progressive 3’, their third artistic album-360.

Split between The Artist and The Mix discs, ‘Pure Prog 3’ divides in order to conquer!! The former sees Alexander ‘Slam Duck’ Smirnov field an impressive ten new, previously unheard Slam Duck-ers. Meanwhile, drawn from the studios of Solarstone, Gundamea (aka Stoneface & Terminal), Clameres, Forerunners and others, the latter has Slam whipping 13 desk-hot cuts up into a formidable wall of progressive sound!

After ‘Space Trace I’s intergalactic overture, The Artist supplies the deep space funk of ‘Fragile’. With echoes of early Kleinenberg, ‘Afterglow’ keeps the vibe flowing, while ‘Frazzled’ balances out its rock-ish guitars with cursive synths. Quickening the pulse, ‘An Ode To Love’ brings in melodic trance elements, while ‘Allure’ pitches a mid-disc curveball, adding a quirkily offbeat breakbeat number to the album. Vocally, ‘Palmy Days’ is a call-back to the golden age of house, as guitar-jam and sunrise synths deliver its elevation. For those looking to add some thump to their prog, ‘PP3’s got you covered, as closing act numbers ‘Trust Me’ and ‘Middle Ages’ issue clear invitations to the dance!!

Of his approach to these twin-albums, Alexander says, “I started making music about 20 years ago, and from the beginning my main motivation was to make it as diverse as possible. At the same time however, that - along with my sets, had to be recognizably Slam Duck! Pure Progressive provides the ideal platform with which to do this, as it showcases how the artist evolves their sound from the studio to DJ set. I'm very happy to have the opportunity to convey my vision through Pure Progressive - a label and series that has no boundaries in electronic music!”
To cross from The Artist to The Mix, Alexander went studio-to-studio, in search of music that captured his musical ID. He didn’t have to look far … Clameres, who Slam first collabed with a decade ago, supplied ‘Extraterrestrial’, while fellow countrymen Gorkiz & Disto, Vasily Dvortsov and others were every bit as quick to feed their latest. Partenaire upped remix-sleeves on Forerunners & Mike Isai’s ‘Arrakis’, while Egypt’s Mir Omar weighed in with an equally devastating (not to mention deep and chunky!) take on Solarstone’s classic ‘4Ever’.

Musical Slam dunks, start-through-finish, Slam Duck goes above the rim with ‘Pure Progressive 3’.. It is available to pre-order/save HERE.

A fan favourite from ‘Electronic Excursions’; ‘Celeste’ is all about the slow burn. With a moody, hypnotic analogue arpeggiator that ebbs and flows throughout this +8 minute ‘electronic excursion’ & meaty synth brass summoning up memories of Pink Floyds’ Dark Side of the Moon’. Gai Barone’s remix is without doubt one of his finest – and darkest – to date; soaking the listener in reverb this version is at home on a very dark, sweaty, strobe pulsed dance floor. Gai makes the arpeggiator contract and explode, kind of like an audible singularity, then lets the LFO filters have their wicked way post drop.

Gai Barone is on the mixing duties of the latest Bonzai Progressive compilation In The Mix Vol.6. After the very successful previous editions the legendary compilation series returns with Gai Barone who has selected some of the finest progressive house cuts mainly from Bonzai Progressive but also from other well known record labels in the progressive scene. It's super hard not to love this sympathetic Italian with that endless talent and great taste for progressive at the edge away from what the mainstream sirens may dictate to produce and be successful. Last time we met Gai Barone in person was at the Pure Trance ADE event when we did an interview along with Basil O'Glue and Andromedha. Now Gai on its own takes the risk to answer our questions with very enlightening answers. Read it now while on your CD player or digital download or streaming service you enjoy his In The Mix vol.6 compilation. You can buy at beatport click here

Interview is written and conducted by Dimitri Kechagias, Music Journalist and Radio DJ

Dimitri: First of all nice to have you back after our epic video interview at Pure Trance event during ADE 2017. Let’s connect the dots and tell us what you were up too from November till now that you are replying to this interview.

Gai: My Pleasure , always great to be part of the Flux Blog!!! It was amazing to see you at ADE and still remember that interview, with Haris and Patrick, definitely one of the best I ever had! Well, I had some gigs around the globe, I’ve played at the progressive stage for ASOT with some of my fav heroes, finished 4 different remixes and mixed a beautiful compilation for Bonzai ;)

Dimitri: Of course your main release the last few months was your In The Mix vol.6 compilation for Bonzai Progressive. Your latest mixed compilation was for Pure Trance along with Gai Barone. What are the differences between these two dj mixes? Have you treated the compilations differently?

Gai: Well I think there are not big differences, actually I my way of choosing or picking tracks is always the same, maybe there’s more about me, I mean Gai Tracks in the Bonzai compilation, but both reflect my world and what I really love.

Dimitri: Do you usually get some guidance from the label about where they wish the compilation to go or you were free for example for In The Mix vol.6 to choose the tracks that you adore to include in it?

Gai: It was very easy to choose the tracks for the compilation as we worked very well with the Bonzai team, they sent me some tracks and let me free to choose the ones I loved most; so I did, selected almost every track they sent me, absolutely stunning pieces and added some gai-flavour to them, and the compilations was ready to go
Gai Barone

Dimitri: In The Mix vol.6 includes great wealth of material from Bonzai Progressive. What is your opinion about the record label and its contribution in the electronic dance music culture.

Gai: you can’t even imagine how many vinyls I have collected from the Bonzai Label in the years ! It’s been a great honour to work with one the most important label for electronic and dance music! They were real pioneers in the industry and still delivering some of the best tools for me as a dj!

Dimitri: Can you describe to us the process of selecting, mixing and releasing this compilation. How did you work for it? Did you use particular DJ software that allows you to do any correction and reach perfection or you use DJ decks to record it?

Gai: As I told you it was very easy to select the tracks for the compilation, if I feel a track I usually play it, that’s it, and it worked for the compilation as well! about the mixing process, I used the software Mixed in Key and Ableton , both made my life easier!

Dimitri: It would be fantastic to pick for us your Top 5 tracks from within the compilation and give us a short comment about the importance of each track for you.

Gai: Wellenrausch track, under his alias Kymatic is absolutely a stunning track! A masterpiece of techno and progressive!

Mark Found track is stunning, big fan of him and I’m sure he ll be one of the best in the next months;

Tanner, Half Way, it’s one of my favorite track to warm it up properly!

My Tanita, which is the intro track of the first part of the compilation ! I m in love with Twist in My Sobriety and always wanted to give this tune a light progressive touch;

And the last but not the least another one from , a track called the Bloop, hard to define, cause it’s a not a trance track, nor a progressive nor a techno but I love people reactions every time I play it!

Dimitri: Do you see this compilation as reflection of your actual dj sets or you tried to take care the home and car listeners who enjoy this compilation in their intimate personal surroundings?

Gai: Definitely this is what I play at the moment, and The Progressive Section may be one of the sets I play in a club right now!

Dimitri: Did you had the opportunity to check out the previous edition of the In The Mix series? If yes which volume is your favourite and why?

Gai: Yes indeed and I really loved the selection from Mr Aiwave, still one to remember

Dimitri: Bonzai Progressive release schedule is vast so are there any tracks that you wished to include in the compilation and for whatever reason you didn’t manage to add them?

Gai: Probably some more Antidote track, something that I’m feeling at the moment, it ’s what the real deep trance should sound, in my opinion!

Dimitri: Are you going to release new material on Bonzai Progressive soon?

Gai: ...and the answer is Yes!! I can’t wait, there’s a new track called Myonic, which will see the light along with an awesome remix from a stellar Producer I love….but it’s still a secret ;)

Dimitri: It would be great to talk about some of your latest tunes as well. Can you give us a short comment about each one of them?

Gai: Basil O'Glue - Everyone has a story (Gai Barone Remix): it’s a trippy track, a bit of techno, progressive, trance and tech house! I really enjoyed making this remix for a good friend ;)

Gai Barone – Monoroid: I’m so happy about it, and even more for releasing it on Zero Three! One of the best label for Real Prog! They rock

Wellenrausch & Gai Barone - Heroes of Light: Believe me, working with Torsten is amazing, we share the same attitude for music and for producing it! and what to say about the Markus’ Voice ? Such a stellar TUNE!

Dimitri: Some labels are tempted to release uplifting or big room trance remixes of your tracks. Do you welcome this interpretations and which remix from other artist in your track is your favourite?

Gai: Honestly I like the way the other producers see my music, and I’m ok with that, I know that tastes are purely personal, but music is a Godsend and everyone should have the chance to express their on point of view about it.

Dimitri: I was very happy to see you as part of the ASOT850 Utrecht line up. How your experience of your DJ set at ASOT was and are you happy to see progressive getting the recognition it deserves in such big scale mass dance events?

Gai: It was such a stellar night, totally different from the others, I mean I’m a “shy” progressive dj and being there with those giants was unbelievable ! I didn’t even know what to play at the beginning, but seeing that crowd dancing on the progressive stage is something I ll never forget! I know that progressive is always an issue for many people out there, expecting more banging or uplifting tunes, but I’m sure that something is changing, and I’ll be my best to help this movement to be bigger and better! Promise

Dimitri: Which events are coming up in your tour schedule and we should have an eye on them?

Gai: I'll be in San Francisco this Saturday for the Pure Trance VI celebration and I’ m so looking forward to it, next my debut in Cardiff with Will Rees and in may another special Pure Trance Event in Phuket at the Unkonscius Beach Festival!

Dimitri: Lets finish of with your predictions for 2018. Can you pick your top 3 artists that you believe that would do great in 2018?

Gai: Mark Found

Division One

Tannura

Dimitri: Thanks Gai very much for this interview.

This is the 2nd instalment of David Forbes first Hal Stucker album ‘Electronic Excursions’ (forthcoming on Pure Progressive in a couple of months time). The Hal Stucker sound is dance legend David Forbes (Public Domain, Optimus, Active Force, Tekra, Arkadi etc.) exploring his progressive side; deep, emotive, melodic, expertly crafted dance music.

‘Disillusioned’ is constructed around a pulsing, arpeggiated bass-line made from multiple, filtering layers, which creates a locked-in groove on the floor. A neat dialogue sample makes it’s statement at the break, while analogue Pink Floyd-esque tones come to the fore – driving the track to it’s grinding peak. First on the remix tip is the Australian Matter – famed for his stunning ‘The Bends’. His remix, in Matter’s own words is “possibly by best work yet” – and we wholeheartedly agree. It is deep, sultry and glorious. Secondly, Russian Slam Duck – fresh from the mind-blowing ‘Mercury EP’ delivers an acid-bass-line fuelled prog masterpiece.

[item value="10"]David Forbes pres. Hal Stucker - Disillusioned [/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]The Scottish legend David Forbes brings the second track taken from his Hal Stucker alias album that will be out soon on Pure Progressive. The track Disillusioned is a magnificent deep dark haunting hypnotic trancer with progressive house references. Pulsating basslines, thumping kicks, rolling drums and thrilling suspenseful synthy line that appears in the breakdown along with the excellent choice of vocal sample that sounds just the right sample in the right place to elevate the whole production. Matter remix goes for a nearly 9 minutes deep travelling spacey journey with superb application of the dark moody and sinister synthy hook while on top Jean Michel Jarre type of synth highlights the tension even more. Lastly Slam Duck continues on the same driving melodramatic melancholic progressive trance with pulsating basslines and superb cinematic strings with warm atmosphere. #PureGold Love IT [/content]

With his latest album still making waves in the Progressive Trance scene, we present something a little more melodic from Haris Vasiloglue, set apart from the moody industrial tones of ‘Depth of Field’. ‘The Promise’ is fuelled by a rolling bassline, chunky kick and crisp percussion. Addictive Perfecto-esque sequenced bleeps and a warping, zapping, acidic lead riff provide the hook lines, drawing us in until the big key change is unleashed +4 minutes in, which is a proper ecstasy moment in the best possible sense. Brilliant.

 [item value="10"]Basil O'Glue - The Promise[/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]The Promise is another stunning production from the hands of the upcoming progressive talent Basil O' Glue. With many releases on his back catalogue and even his own well respected and recognised label Saturate Audio proves that this man has a serious plan and his life seems to be all about music. His track The Promise can be summerized as a very spacious spacey cosmic trance journey. Moody dark basslines, punchy drums, strong kick and superb build up of the tension with great   sci-fi synthy noises and psy-trance influences. The breakdown is dark and colorful at the very same time while the climax is full on and melodic in an anthemic direction without though becoming happy or overexcited. Serious production from start to finish with steady direction to please and ignite serious trance followers who travel rather than just jumping when they dance along. #PureGold Love IT. [/content]

This is absolutely beautiful, a 10 minute excursion into the deep. Mir Omar hails from New York City, a quiet unassuming guy who just happens to have a real talent for producing subtle, warm & emotional progressive music. ‘Suddenly’ is a combination of ethnic percussive tones, incessant rhythms, analogue sequencers & spacious pads. A nod of respect to that man.

 [item value="10"]Mir Omar - Suddenly [/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Mir Omar provides on Pure Progressive definitely a stand out track called Suddenly. Deep melodic dreamy progressive with house and trance elements that will manage easily to relax your senses and welcome you on the dancefloor. Deep pulsating basslines, driving rolling grooves and great guitar and piano riffs along with harps and cinematic strings while little trancy synthy lines are added to give you that illusion of travelling without moving searching to discover what it maybe hidden underneath the surface. Suddenly has melancholic moody touches with influences from Anjunadeep sound but in a trancier colorful direction. #PureGold Love iT [/content]

Robert Nickson delivers on every level, probably one of the reasons why he is known behind-the-scenes as the ‘producer’s producer’ when it comes to Trance. Under his RNX guise Nickson takes things deeper – much deeper. Atoms is a prime example of the RNX sound with its mutating arpeggiator lead, Italo-esque bass line and gritty spoken-word sample. On the remix we welcome back the legend that is Vadim Zhukov; a man synonymous with edgy, groove-propelled tech-infused progressive trance deliciousness. His remix is built upon tight, crisp, Sauvignon Blanc percussion (that’s ‘dry’ if you’re not a wine connoisseur!) and brash, gritty synth work. Two complimentary mixes, one slamming release.

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Pure Progressive continues to excite the faithful followers with another super tasty package. RNX aka the beloved Robert Nickson went deeper and he has crafted a beautiful hypnotic deep journey with nice simple dreamy synthy riff and most importantly super clever outstanding vocal sample that will engage your mind and awake your imagination. Smooth arrangement involving and evolving will catch you and never let you get away from its influence. Vadim on the other hand stays true to the original vibes and deliver the truly infectious deep alternative with rolling basslines, techy drums, crunchy foundation and great soaring warm strings along with a very cinematic synthy hook along with the original dreamy one plus the vocals. The result will find supporters who tend to go for more organic sounds and alternative sounds. #PureGold Love iT[/content]
