3.00pm: BREAKING THE STIGMA – SEVERE AND ENDURING MENTAL ILLNESS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY (in association with Tonic Music for Mental Health)

Over the past few years, awareness of mental health in the music industry has improved significantly, which is best highlighted by the increased number of panel discussions focusing on the topic.

Whilst the music industry has benefited from a greater understanding of stress, anxiety and depression, there remains a lack of awareness with regard to severe and enduring mental illness in the form of bipolar, personality disorders and schizophrenia.

A consequence of this is stigma, which people living with severe and enduring mental health illnesses still experience in the music industry.

This panel aims to start breaking the stigma around severe and enduring mental health illness, by holding an open discussion about how to support people in the music industry. living with bipolar, personality disorders and/or schizophrenia.

The panel will be moderated by the mental health charity, Tonic Music, and feature panelists sharing their own experiences around the topic.

10.00am: AIRWAVES

Radio vs Playlists vs Podcasts. Who rules the airwaves these days?

In today’s rapidly evolving music landscape, the battle for listeners’ attention is fiercer than ever.

Traditional radio, once the undisputed king of music discovery, now competes with algorithm-driven playlists and personality-driven podcasts for dominance over the airwaves.

We will dive deep into the shifting dynamics of these platforms, exploring where audiences are tuning in, how music is breaking through, and what this means for artists, labels, and producers looking to maximise impact.

Our expert panel—featuring industry leaders from broadcasting, streaming, and digital media—will examine how each platform shapes music consumption and whether radio still holds influence in an era ruled by on-demand listening.

For labels and producers, the big question remains: where should they allocate their budgets to reach the right listeners?

Should they invest in radio promotions, pitch to high-profile playlists, or tap into the engaged audiences of niche podcasts?

Whether you’re an artist seeking exposure, a label strategizing marketing efforts, or a curator shaping the future of music discovery, this is your roadmap to navigating the modern listening ecosystem.

A PhD Scholarship in the name of electronic musician, DJ and techno pioneer Richie Hawtin, aka Plastikman, has now been unveiled at the University of Huddersfield.

Applications for the scholarship, titled The Richie Hawtin PhD Scholarship in Electronic Music, Cultures and Production, are now being taken up until 10th February to start in September 2023. The winning applicant will be selected by the university with guidance from Richie Hawtin, who will also offer tutorial support throughout the scholarship.

“There is huge scope for research within this PhD,” says Professor Rupert Till, the University’s Head of Department of Music and Design Arts, and an acclaimed musician in his own right under the name Professor Chill. “It could be anything within music such as electronic music, dance music, club music, DJ culture or even around composition or analysis.” “Richie has set up his own labels; technology companies; an investment fund; a sake brand; has run a residency in Ibiza; and written many genre-defining albums. This is a wonderful opportunity to tap into his knowledge and experience.”
The University has deep links with Richie, starting when the British-Canadian artist was the subject of a PhD around a decade ago. Since receiving his honorary doctorate, Richie has visited to give masterclasses and one-to-one sessions with students where he has offered advice on their music.
Speaking about the PhD Scholarship, Richie Hawtin comments: “I’m honoured to continue my relationship with the University of Huddersfield and participate in their PhD Scholarship program. My hope is to offer my experience and insight into the many areas of Techno culture which I’ve been involved in over the past thirty years. To assist in a student's exploration of the past and inner workings of our industry and help them offer new critical analysis from a contemporary perspective.”
The University features more than 20 different recording and production studios, all equipped with top-of-the-line hardware, software and plug-ins, and there is an impressive collection of industry- leading microphones and recording equipment. It’s music department is ranked 5th in the UK for music research and is ranked 25th in the QS World University Subject Rankings. Although the successful candidate would usually be expected to be based in Huddersfield, the University also has a distance learning PhD route. It also offers degree and masters courses in creative music production.

The successful candidate will work within the Popular Music Studies Research Group (PMSRG), which is part of the Centre for Research in Music and its Technologies (CRMT). The PMSRG is a hub for practice-based, practice-led and text-based research around popular music. It has hosted a string of international research events including the Ambient @ 40 symposium in 2018 and the industry-focused Creative Sampling, Sound Design, Artificial Intelligence in Mixing Day in 2022.

The successful candidate can expect:

• Full waiver of tuition fees.

• Automatic consideration, for appropriate research projects, for the Creative Music Production Scholarship and/or the Nitin Sawhney Scholarship in Popular Music (both of which provide an annual stipend of £17,668 in addition to a fee-waiver).

• Full-time PhD study for three years beginning in September 2023.

• Supervision from internationally renowned staff, including, if appropriate to the subject of the research project, some tutorial support from Richie Hawtin.

• Opportunities for creative production work, collaborative projects, publication, and the expectation to gain teaching experience.

• Access to the Teaching Assistant Preparation Programme (TAPP), which can lead to the qualification of Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).

• Access to additional financial support through the Postgraduate Support Fund of the School of Arts and Humanities.

• If not successful, consideration for a partial fee-waiver or full-fee study.

Please indicate clearly on the online application form that you are applying for The Richie Hawtin PhD Scholarship in Electronic Music, Cultures and Production.

Today’s announcement signals the next phase in Richie Hawtin’s dedication to music education. Also unveiled last week, he announced his forthcoming U.S tour. The From Our Minds – To Be Announced 2023 tour is the next evolutionary step in Richie Hawtin’s lifelong commitment to support the development of the electronic music scene. On March 10th, this unique eight-date tour will begin in the birthplace of techno, Detroit, before rolling out to a series of North American warehouses. With a mission to develop and increase awareness of the younger generation, the tour showcases a diverse group of North American underground artists moving the ideals of ‘90s techno forward in their own unique ways. The From Our Minds – To Be Announced 2023 tour sees him return to the U.S after hitting the road in 2012 and 2015 as part of the U.S CNTRL Tours, where Richie hosted lectures and workshops on techno by day, and experiential learning sessions on the dancefloor of each venue by night.

About Richie Hawtin:

Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman is a genuine original. His critical acclaim spans the creative realm of the fine art community to the technological vanguard. As a performing artist, he is constantly pushing conceptual frontiers, moving things forward, welcoming as many as he can to ideas and experiences that would have seemed pure science fiction when he began his career as a DJ and producer in the emerging techno scene in Detroit. Hawtin is British-born and Canadian-raised. He is the business mind behind the labels Plus 8, MINUS Records and now From Our Minds. And, of course, he is Plastikman, perhaps that most of all, electronic musician par excellence, maintaining an underground agenda of avant-garde electronica over six albums. The New York Times called him “one of the electronic dance world's intellectual forces,”. However, it's plaudits from other areas that showcase the breadth of Hawtin's appeal. Raf Simons, Co-Creative Director at Prada, says he listens “to Richie Hawtin's music like others listen to classical music”, calling him “the Kraftwerk of today”.

In 2013 Simons asked Hawtin to put on a special performance at the Guggenheim, New York's iconic art museum, this pushed Hawtin to complete his last Plastikman album "EX”. In 2020/2021, during the pandemic, he composed original runway soundtracks for Raf & Miuccia Prada’s first ever seasonal online fashion shows. In technology, it was Hawtin who led the shift from physical to digital DJing through the creation of Final Scratch and his own blistering DJ performances; he was a co-founder of the pioneering Beatport digital store; is the head of his own music-technology fund Plus 8 Equities (investors in Endel, Landr, Splice, Subpac and others); and now with his own PLAYdifferently company for innovative DJ and performance technologies.

Trance is a musical style capable of inspiring passions like few others, and one that - over its considerable lifetime - has been much-documented. Arguably though, never as comprehensively as within the pages of Hypnotised – A Journey Through Trance, which is released this month. Authored by Dutch writer Arjan Rietveld, and based on three years of exhaustive research and interviews that sit alongside his personal reflections on the subject, the book is the most definitive account yet of the music’s history.

Subtitled 1990 To 2005, Rietveld covers its proto to seminal periods, through to its ascendance and glory years reign. For Hypnotised, he spoke to some of its foremost operators, with the likes of Solarstone, Laurent Veronnez, Banco de Gaia, Sander Kleinenberg, Cosmic Baby, Delirium, Jam El Mar, Marco V, Nu NRG and Push all contributing empirical context and ringside insight. In doing so, they relate the production backstories of some of trance’s most renowned musical moments, lending observations that will fascinate fans, both casual and dedicated.

Further, Hypnotised includes extensive conversations with the label heads and owners – the people tasked with meeting the rapidly expanding demand for the new musical form. Acclaimed Black Hole Recordings head Arny Bink, Bonzai’s Christian ‘Fly’ Pieters, Eric Morand of France’s F Communications, Benjamin Woods’ Hooj Choons offshoot Lost Language and MFS’s Mark Reeder collectively provide a pan-European account of its label origins.

The book also examines what’s lent the style its enduring appeal and takes a forensic look at the labyrinthine architecture of its sub-genres, objectively weighing their pros and cons. Collectively, Hypnotised reconstructs trance’s earliest years, building the clearest-yet picture of how it all began. Stripping back the glitz and glamour of the superclub era, it uncovers the organic bare bones and cottage industry-nature of its beginnings. Who stayed in and who departed (and why), who got paid and who didn’t, the lows, the highs, the rock, roll & indisputable soul of the genre are all to be found between its pages.

The book’s release is also complemented by a companion CD, vinyl & digital album release, which places ‘A Journey’s spotlight on the Dutch contribution to trance’s nascence. Featuring both embryonic and breakout moments, it includes landmark tracks like Armin’s ‘Blue Fear’, ‘Out Of The Blue’ by System F, ‘Janerio’ from Solid Sessions and Vincent de Moor’s ‘Fly Away’. Equally the album covers inspirational, seminal, ‘trance-before-trance’ tracks, including World Tour’s ‘You Wanna Be Loved’, Armin’s ‘Electronically Entertained’ release (under his Technology alias), Fractals’ ‘Lifelab’, ‘Mirror’ by Stray Dog (a.k.a. Tiësto), Geert Huinink’s Photon Project and others. In doing so it also puts a rare spotlight on trance’s lesser-known label beginnings, incorporating music from there-at-the-start imprints like Cyber, Massive Drive and Alien Recordings.
