🎧 Progressive House Review
⌨️ BT ft. Jan Johnston - Mercury & Solace (Sasha Remix) out on Black Hole Recordings
Somewhat impossibly, it’s been (wait for it) ... almost thirty years since progressive house evangelists BT and Sasha’s names featured together on the same release. Indeed, you’d need to roll right the way back to 1997 and the latter’s epic 12 minutes on BT’s ‘Remember’ for their last interconnective moment.
All of which makes what we’re looking at here quite exceptional.
Now we’d love to tell you that this prog house lover’s grail-level bucket list item is the result of years-long negotiations between the two houses. It was though as simple as Sasha dropping BT a line last year and requesting the parts. After giving it a first ID-revealing airing last autumn, it’s been popping up on Sasha’s setlists ever since. That’s led (somewhat inevitably) to feverish fan discussion regarding a release. And, well, that time ... is this time, with the bragging rights falling to Black Hole Recordings.
Since it gleamed into existence on his ‘Moments In Still Life’ album, Brian Transeau’s remained famously tight-lipped around the enigmatically titled meaning behind ‘Mercury & Solace’. Originally released in 1999, it stands as one of BT’s defining works, weaving together his filmic production ideals, progressive trance textures and bleeding-edge FX.
Sasha has located its “fruit of life” vocal shamanics in the opening half, while quartering Jan Johnson’s dubbed up and time-stretched its effortlessly eternal “reach out for me” refrain in the latter. That comes backed by a drawn down tempo, while he’s upped its b-line chug and swapped BT’s hi-hats for a more funked up perc roll, all or which expand its atmospheres no end.
A genuine moment in latter-day progressive house history, Sasha’s remix of BT’s ‘Mercury & Solace’ out now.
🎧 Review by: Dimitris Kechagias
SUMMARY REVIEW
BT’s “Mercury and Solace” in Sasha’s remix is nothing short of a masterclass in progressive house and trance hybridization, and its technical execution justifies the perfect score it has received. The melodic hooks and harmonics are immediately captivating, with Sasha skillfully reinterpreting BT’s original motifs into a lush, evolving soundscape. The track opens with ethereal “fruit of life” vocal shamanics, carefully layered over a cinematic bed of pads that ebb and flow with harmonic tension. As the remix progresses, Jan Johnson’s timeless “reach out for me” refrain is quartered, dubbed, and time-stretched, creating a hypnotic loop that enhances the emotional pull while maintaining harmonic cohesion. This harmonic movement is not just musical but structural, driving a sense of journey that aligns perfectly with progressive set-building.
The sonic engineering and production quality are flawless, reflecting both Sasha’s veteran status and his meticulous approach to modern club soundscapes. The low-end b-line chugs with controlled authority, its frequencies tightly carved to leave room for the rich midrange layers and sparkling highs. The hi-hats have been replaced with a funked-up percussive roll that expands the groove, while subtle stereo imaging and phase tricks make the track feel alive in a spatial context. The mixdown achieves an impeccable balance, where every layer breathes yet contributes to the whole, and the mastering ensures that the track maintains dynamic impact without sacrificing warmth or depth, a hallmark of sonic excellence.
Effects and spatial design are deployed with precision, giving the remix its atmospheric and immersive qualities. Sasha’s use of reverbs, delays, and modulation effects transforms the soundstage into a three-dimensional experience, with vocal fragments drifting in spectral layers and percussive elements moving fluidly across the stereo field. This attention to detail in spatial construction reinforces the arrangement and build dynamics, which gradually unfold in classic progressive fashion. The track rises and recedes with intentional pacing, creating waves of energy that sustain both emotional resonance and dancefloor momentum, a duality rarely handled with such finesse.
Creativity and artistic identity shine throughout, as Sasha manages to honor BT’s original masterpiece while stamping his signature sonic fingerprint on the remix. Each transition is thoughtfully executed, with energy flow calibrated for seamless club or festival integration. DJs will appreciate its intro and outro mixability, as the extended phrasing and subtle cue points allow for flexible looping and layering. The remix’s catchiness and replay value come not from oversaturation, but from the hypnotic cycles of its motifs, which invite repeated listening in both personal and live settings. Its emotional impact is undeniable, evoking nostalgia for long-time fans while feeling fresh and forward-thinking for contemporary audiences.
In terms of practical utility, the track excels across all dimensions: from club and festival performance to online streaming platforms, its algorithmic fit and Shazam-ready hooks ensure strong digital traction. Its structure and energy also make it ideal for TikTok and short-form edits, without compromising its integrity as a long-form progressive journey. Crowd reaction potential is immense, with the combination of deep emotional resonance and infectious rhythmic drive eliciting both introspection and euphoric release. Sasha’s remix of “Mercury and Solace” is, in every technical and artistic metric, pure gold, reaffirming the legendary synergy of two titans of progressive music and delivering a timeless piece that will resonate for decades to come..

The successor to Christian Burns’s 2021 opus ‘Love Songs From Suburbia’ will be ‘Waking Up In A Northern Town’, and as both albums’ titles suggest, they’ll share a closely associated throughline.

Further underscoring that are the five singles already drawn from ‘Northern Town’s wider body: ‘Darker Days’, ‘I Will Follow’ and, most recently, ‘Strangers’ among them. Now, with the LP locked for a June 19 release, Christian and UV man Paul Thomas deliver it an astonishing sixth statement.

Neat shorthand for the alchemic coming-together of Paul’s progressive studio lexicon and Christian’s inimitable and instantly discernible vocals, ‘The Two Of Us’ finds them unified on one outstanding piece of music.

For his part, Paul delivers a masterclass in progressive construction and arrangement, bringing ‘The Two Of Us’ his brand of understated chemistry. He kits it out with slowly cascading synth-lines, which unfolds over its chugging rhythms, LFO undulace and hissing, pressurised FX. Its mainline drives the track on in measured fashion, allowing space and restraint to do the heavy lifting, while maximising its impact through less-is-more minimalism.

Naturally, every bit as critical to this brilliant equilibrium is Burns himself, who’s vocal haunts up an end-to-end storm on it. His tones arrive with a spectral lightness, suspended somewhere between presence and absence, almost akin to an internal monologue let slip. Each lyrical line feels inward-facing yet impressively expansive, deepening the ethereal imprint ‘The Two Of Us’ leaves behind.

With the curtain all-but ready to go up on ‘Waking Up In A Northern Town’, ‘The Two Of Us’ provides it another brilliant pre-release marker. You can find it where all good music is streamed Click here: blackhole.lnk.to/TwoofUs.

[item value="10"]Christian Burns & Paul Thomas - The Two of Us [/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Christian Burns & Paul Thomas’s collaboration “The Two of Us” stands as a remarkable demonstration of modern progressive house production, delivering an immersive auditory experience that seamlessly combines technical precision with emotional resonance. The track’s 122 BPM foundation provides a steady, dancefloor-friendly pulse, enhanced by a tightly engineered rhythmic structure that maintains both groove and drive without ever feeling rushed. From the opening bars, the carefully crafted percussion layers and chugging basslines lock in the listener, while the slow evolution of LFO-driven synths and pressurized effects allow a hypnotic momentum to build naturally. This restraint results in a perfect balance between energy and spaciousness, making each build and drop feel earned rather than forced. Melodically, the track excels with its dreamy harmonic layers and balearic-style synth hooks, which unfold progressively to create a lush, immersive atmosphere. The production showcases an exceptional understanding of spatial design and dynamic range, utilizing subtle reverbs, stereo imaging, and airy pads to create a three-dimensional soundstage that feels simultaneously intimate and expansive. Each transition and build-up is executed with seamless precision, demonstrating high-level sound design and an intelligent arrangement that keeps the energy flow and momentum captivating from start to finish. Christian Burns’s vocal performance is the ethereal core of the piece. His voice floats with spectral lightness, blurring the line between presence and absence, creating a heavily introspective and emotional experience. The lyrical content and delivery feel like an internal monologue drifting outward, enhancing the track’s cohesion and storytelling. This emotional resonance, combined with its melodic and atmospheric qualities, gives the track a distinctive identity that is both creatively fresh and technically polished. From a broader perspective, “The Two of Us” offers notable benefits for mental health, fitness, and wellness contexts. Research in music therapy and exercise science has demonstrated that steady rhythmic structures and emotionally rich music can improve mood, reduce stress, and enhance cognitive focus during workouts or meditation sessions (Thoma et al., 2013; Karageorghis & Priest, 2012). The entrancing progression and consistent BPM make this track particularly suitable for fitness classes, yoga, and mindfulness practices, where rhythm and emotional immersion can elevate physical and mental well-being. The rich harmonic layers and uplifting yet introspective tone can trigger dopamine release and positive affect, promoting both relaxation and motivation (Salimpoor et al., 2011). “The Two of Us” not only performs flawlessly across all technical criteria—from transitions and sound design to cohesion and club readiness—but also demonstrates the profound effect that high-quality electronic music can have on human wellness. Its catchiness, replay value, and crowd impact make it a gem for DJs, while its immersive qualities position it as a valuable tool for enriching mental and emotional health. #PureGold Loveit [/content]

From the very first beat at 125 BPM, the track captivates with its rhythmic foundation, offering a tight and polished groove that sustains both dance floor energy and meditative flow. The layered percussion and bubbly tribal rhythms are meticulously programmed, creating a natural pulse that not only drives the track forward but also stimulates mental alertness and enhances physical engagement, making it perfect for wellness classes and fitness sessions. The melodic architecture of “Every Moment” is a testament to the producers’ expertise. Warm piano chords and soaring synth layers intertwine to craft a cinematic harmonic tapestry that is as emotionally resonant as it is technically precise. These melodic hooks, combined with the lush harmonic layers, induce positive emotional responses, a phenomenon supported by research on how consonant harmonies and sustained melodic progression can trigger dopamine release and improve mood (Blood & Zatorre, 2001). The transitions and drops are executed with surgical precision, ensuring that each build-up delivers a satisfying and coherent narrative that enhances the listener’s sense of flow—a psychological state linked to enhanced well-being and reduced stress (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990). Subtle reverb treatments and finely balanced effects create a three-dimensional soundstage, enveloping the listener in a sonic environment that promotes both immersion and relaxation. Eve Allie’s vocal performance is nothing short of stunning—her ethereal delivery and lyrical phrasing enhance the track’s emotional resonance, providing a sense of intimacy and upliftment that contributes to improved mental well-being and emotional release when experienced in a communal setting. Structurally, “Every Moment” is highly original and cohesive, with a clear narrative arc that makes it ideal for both club and festival use as well as personal listening sessions. Its intro and outro are thoughtfully arranged for ease of mixing, offering reliable BPM consistency and clean cue points that DJs will appreciate for seamless set integration. The track’s balance of energy flow and dynamic shifts also makes it highly adaptable for diverse applications, from energizing spin classes to meditative dance sessions. Scientific studies have shown that electronic music with steady rhythms and moderate tempos can enhance physical performance, reduce perceived exertion, and foster social bonding in group exercise environments (Karageorghis & Priest, 2012). Ultimately, “Every Moment” achieves a rare synthesis of technical mastery, artistic identity, and emotional depth. Its combination of intricate production, captivating vocals, and euphoric melodic progression ensures it will remain a staple in both professional DJ sets and personal playlists. Month by 2026-month, Christian Burns has been turning the singles pages on his highly anticipated ‘Love Songs From Suburbia’ successor. As he’s been doing so, he’s also been script-flipping its titles and themes in a knowingly cryptic manner.

Case in point, the spiritually elevating ‘Fall To You’, which augured the unexpectedly optimistic (but against-title-type), ‘Darker Days’. Now, ‘I Will Follow’s trust-the-moment message is itself tailed by his title-with-a-twist new single, ‘Strangers’.

Twist? Well, that being, that once you dig into Christian’s ‘Strangers’, you’ll find its protagonists are likely just would-be lovers who haven’t yet met.

His song snapshots that hardwired spark of connection, where two souls allow instinct to overtake logic. It conveys a ‘surrender of self’ moment, in which outside forces fade into insignificance and feeling becomes the only truth that matters. Naturally anchoring this is Christian’s song, which, untethered from time, moves through it like an unanswered question, its impact defined as much by what isn’t voiced as what is.

With his Original version servicing the more laidback end of the mix spectrum, Ukrainian DJ/producer Krismi handles its clubbier teleportation. Guided by the progressive throb of her propellant bass and drums, she drives the atmospheres further with shadowy, nagging sub-riffs and steelier mainline ones. Collectively, they form a dazzling sonic counterpoint to Christian’s song.

Christian’s ‘Strangers’ come together this spring. His Original Mix lands on April 24 and Krismi’s remix arrives bright and early on May 1. Find the original here and the Krismi remix here.

[item value="10"] Christian Burns - Strangers (Original & Krismi Remix)[/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Christian Burns’ “Strangers” in both its Original and Krismi Remix forms is a masterclass in modern progressive house, excelling across every technical and creative criterion. The track’s rhythm, groove, and drive are perfectly calibrated to maintain listener engagement, with the Original Mix’s 124 BPM offering a smooth yet propulsive flow, while Krismi’s 125 BPM remix adds a subtle urgency ideal for club environments. Its melodic hooks and harmonic layers are intricately arranged, providing a lush, cinematic soundscape where the interplay between vocals and instrumentation creates a delicate tension that resolves beautifully in each build-up and drop. Transitions are seamless, with each section of the track flowing naturally into the next, sustaining energy flow and momentum without ever feeling forced or repetitive. The sound design and production quality shine through with pristine clarity. Every element—from the warm pads to the steelier mainline riffs in Krismi’s version—is meticulously balanced, demonstrating an exceptional dynamic range and loudness balance that allows the track to breathe while maintaining club-ready impact. The originality of the arrangement is evident in how the song tells a story without overt exposition, pairing spatial effects and immersive reverb tails to create a vivid three-dimensional listening experience. Christian’s vocal performance, tender yet resolute, enhances the emotional resonance, with lyrics that capture the spark of connection between strangers in a way that is universally relatable. Creativity and artistic identity are reflected in both mixes’ ability to function in multiple listening contexts, from private headphone sessions to peak-time festival settings. The track’s cohesion and storytelling form a narrative arc that elevates its catchiness and replay value, while its intro/outro structures, BPM consistency, and cue point potential make it a favorite for DJs seeking smooth integration into sets. Crowd reaction potential is high, with the energy dynamics carefully engineered for maximum euphoria. Beyond its technical excellence, “Strangers” has positive effects on mental health and wellness. Scientific research suggests that engaging with emotionally resonant music at moderate tempos can reduce cortisol levels and induce states of relaxation while enhancing mood (Chanda & Levitin, 2013). Its steady BPM and euphoric harmonic progressions make it particularly suitable for fitness and wellness classes, where rhythmic consistency and emotional uplift can enhance both focus and physical performance (Karageorghis & Priest, 2012). The immersive sonic environment promotes a sense of flow—a mental state linked to improved well-being—while the melodic elements can trigger dopamine release, contributing to positive emotional regulation (Salimpoor et al., 2011). In sum, “Strangers” is not only an exemplar of high-level electronic music production but also a track with demonstrated potential for enhancing human wellness, making it both artistically and experientially invaluable. #PureGold Love IT [/content]

The track’s intro and outro sections are crafted with DJs in mind, offering clean cue points and smooth looping potential that enhance its versatility in live sets. The emotional potency of “Eternal Glow” is undeniable. Scientific studies in music psychology suggest that melodic progressive music with uplifting harmonic intervals can stimulate dopamine release, elevate mood, and reduce stress (Salimpoor et al., 2011; Thoma et al., 2013). The combination of its celestial vocal performance and euphoric harmonic layering fosters a sense of flow and well-being that makes it ideal not only for clubs and festivals but also for fitness, wellness, and mental health environments. The tempo and energy profile align perfectly with aerobic exercise and yoga flow sessions, as research has shown that music in the 120 BPM range enhances endurance and synchronization during physical activity (Karageorghis & Priest, 2012). Furthermore, the track’s immersive and cinematic qualities promote emotional catharsis, which is linked to reduced cortisol levels and improved emotional regulation. As a final impression, “Eternal Glow” is a track that achieves both technical excellence and emotional depth, with replay value that ensures audiences and DJs alike will return to it repeatedly. Its cohesive narrative, pristine production, and euphoric resonance position it as a standout release in the progressive house landscape, fulfilling both artistic and functional criteria for dance music performance and human wellness. #PureGold Loveit[/content]

Christian Burns is back, and this time Avenue One is on the buttons. Their remix of "Darker Days" is pure progressive fire—think deep, driving basslines meets that "sitting in the pouring rain" mood.

Whether you’re rinsing this in a dark warehouse or a sunrise set, the message hits the same: "See the lights around the hill" and keep moving. No surrendering allowed.

[item value="10"]Christian Burns - Darker Days (Avenue One Remix)[/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Christian Burns’ “Darker Days (Avenue One Remix)” is a masterclass in modern progressive house, showcasing impeccable technical execution and thoughtful production techniques that elevate the track beyond a standard dancefloor cut. Opening with deeply resonant, pulsating basslines and a solid foundation of punchy kicks and thumping drums, the track immediately establishes its rhythmic drive and groove, maintaining a perfect 124 BPM for seamless integration into DJ sets. Its energy flow is carefully sculpted through dynamic transitions, build-ups, and drops that sustain momentum while ensuring each section feels purposefully connected, demonstrating a flawless understanding of set flow and crowd engagement. The melodic construction is equally impressive, with layered harmonic elements that combine cinematic strings, rich synths, and subtle effects to create a sense of atmosphere and immersion without overwhelming the core vocal performance. Christian Burns’ emotive delivery sits perfectly in the mix, benefitting from thoughtful EQing and spatial design that position the vocals front and center while subtly enveloping them in reverb tails and delays. This balance produces strong emotional resonance and supports the track’s storytelling arc, making it both a creative and cohesive listening experience that maintains high replay value. Production quality is pristine, with careful attention to dynamic range and loudness balance. The low-end frequencies carry weight without muddiness, mid-range synths glide smoothly without clashing, and the high frequencies sparkle without harshness. Effects and spatialization are used with intention, enhancing the depth of the stereo field and providing DJs with flexible cue points and looping potential for live performance. The intro and outro structures are tailored for club and festival utility, offering clean mix-in and mix-out options that support effortless blending in a professional set. Beyond the technical achievements, “Darker Days” carries notable psychological and physiological benefits when experienced in wellness and fitness contexts. Research in music psychology demonstrates that structured rhythmic patterns and harmonic consonance can stimulate dopamine release and enhance mood regulation, reducing stress and anxiety (Thompson et al., 2012; Salimpoor et al., 2013). The steady 124 BPM tempo aligns closely with walking and light jogging paces, encouraging movement synchronization that can elevate endurance and perceived exercise enjoyment, making it suitable for fitness and spin classes (Karageorghis & Priest, 2012). Furthermore, immersive melodic layers and evocative vocal delivery can contribute to mindfulness and emotional catharsis, supporting mental wellness and meditative states in group or personal settings. Through its combination of technical mastery, emotional depth, and scientifically supported positive impact on human well-being, Avenue One’s remix of “Darker Days” achieves the rare feat of being a track that resonates on the dancefloor, in fitness spaces, and in personal listening environments alike. #PureGold Loveit [/content]
