After a successful sophomore edition in which electronic music and interdisciplinary art came together, ADE and International Theatre Amsterdam present the return of Arts & Culture with ATMEN, a theater production of Nicole Beutler Projects. The art installation and performance piece by Nicole Beutler is the second part of the trilogy RITUALS OF TRANSFORMATION, and invites you to step into an undiscovered piece of the future in 2200 where theatre ITA is overgrown by nature. Search for a new balance between humans, earth, animals, and technology during this immersive visual performance premiering on ADE Wednesday and Thursday, and get a glimpse of what ADE Arts & Culture has in store this year.

ATMEN (evolution is silently unfolding)

In ATMEN, Nicole Beutler welcomes you to an undiscovered piece of the future; it is 2200. A pulsating, vibrating and breathing paradise in which nature has reclaimed its place. The red plush in the theatre is now part of a living ecosystem. The ruin is overgrown with bacteria, flora, fauna and shiny fungi. Along with hybrid creatures, the audience becomes part of this ecosystem, in which the four singers of the award-winning dance opera 8: METAMORPHOSIS sing romantic songs of nature.

Run time 90 minutes
Genre dance
Language various languages

Under the moonlight, a wolf howls and two dancers meet. Together with the living space, they move to music of lost radio waves, rustling leaves and electronic music compositions by our in-house composer Gary Shepherd. These compositions are inspired by remnants of Schubert songs.

Visual artist Heleen Blanken uses three-dimensional video images to make the theatre overrun with resilient nature. Deep in these damp, vibrating, cavernous depths, at the bottom of a post-apocalyptic reality, the wild promise of an unimaginable future gradually takes shape.

The second part of the trilogy: RITUALS OF TRANSFORMATION (towards a new humanity) is an immersive theatrical experience. We travel through an experiment, a speculative fiction where we contemplate constant collective transformation in an overgrown ruin.

In the first part of the trilogy: GINKGO or: 56 million years ago there were palm trees on the North Pole, we watched the end of the man-made world, like a film without a happy ending. In ATMEN, Beutler and her team let the audience catch their breath again with a space full of life, potential and change. In the final part of the trilogy, a new balance will be found.

This trilogy creates a space where the performers and the audience reflect together on what it is to be human in this world. Theatre offers an opportunity to think critically about the future of humanity on the planet. Beutler aims to touch the audience by offering new perspectives, by breaking open existing concepts in search of new, unexpected connections, generating potential for a hopeful vision of the future.

This performance is presented as part of a collaboration between Internationaal Theater Amsterdam (ITA) and Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE).

The hype is getting real: Melkweg is among the first large venues to reveal some of their many ADE events. The music and cultural venue with multiple concert halls in the centre of Amsterdam returns to our festival with a varied lineup of ADE debuts and familiar faces. Did you know Melkweg was already participating when ADE first saw the light? The events range from drum and bass to trippy trance, thumping techno, funky house, and minimal electronic tunes, so let’s dive into the first confirmations. Time to mark your calendars!

Live concerts

  • He hasn't returned to ADE since 2017, but that changes this year. German composer, pianist, and producer Martin Kohlstedt brings his classical piano, melancholic ambient, and introspective soundscapes to Melkweg for a concert night on ADE Wednesday.

  • Also returning to ADE is Dutch soul, disco, and electronica duo Kraak & Smaak celebrates their twenty years of playing the funkiest tunes together. This concert on ADE Thursday promises to be a special one, as they bring extra musicians besides vocalists Berenice van Leer and Ivar Vermeulen and invite guests for groundbreaking guest performances. No wonder the show is called 'Live XL'!

  • Electro organic? That's ECHT!. The electro-jazz band from Belgium is set to bring their live show to Melkweg on ADE Friday - and if there's one thing this quartet is known for, it's their explosive performance.

  • Did you know the American hit producer ILLENIUM has never played in The Netherlands before? He'll make his sold-out Dutch debut in Melkweg on ADE Friday, bringing singles like 'Good Things Fall Apart' and 'Takeaway' with The Chainsmokers and Lennon Stella along. Ready to dance to his future bass music?

Club nights

  • Oliver Heldens returns to Melkweg on ADE Wednesday to kick off the electronic madness. The Dutch DJ curates two halls in the venue and brings many friendly faces to play the spiciest future house tunes alongside him.

  • Trance for days! Markus Schulz takes over the 'Upstairs' room in Melkweg with his label Coldharbour Recordings on ADE Wednesday. Expect an intimate night of the darkest, deepest, and moodiest progressive house and trance. The German-American DJ and producer returns to Melkweg on ADE Friday with his 'Markus Schulz Open To Close' event, where trance will be the theme for the entire night.

  • Who else to do it but Dave Clarke? His eighteenth edition of 'Dave Clarke Presents' on ADE Friday has a stacked lineup already: selectors like Afra, Dasha Rush, Oscar Mulero, and TOM And His Computer (live) will serve the most gritty, industrial, and groovy tracks together with the techno heavyweight himself.

  • Just like last year, Hospitality has got you covered on everything drum and bass. UK imprint Hospital Records showcases thumping beats on ADE Saturday, with a lineup that's not compromising: Metrik, Flava D, Solah, Anaïs, and many others do the tracks, you do the tricks.

  • Tropical house fans, this one's for you. 'Sam Feldt Presents A Heartfeldt ADE' on ADE Sunday promises to be a night full of hits, melodic beats, and good times. The lineup remains a secret for now, but fans of Sam Feldt are definitely in for a treat.
