On the cusp of ‘Waking Up In A Northern Town’ - Christian Burns’s follow-up to his critically-acclaimed 2021 ‘Love Songs From Suburbia’ LP - the UK-born/US-based singer-songwriter lays down its final single preface. In doing so, he’s chosen this juncture to square the focus squarely on Banaati - the most significant co-production element involved in ‘Northern Town’s development. With ‘Fall To You’, ‘I Will Follow’, ‘Strangers’ and others already entered into ‘Northern Town’s ledger, ‘Embers’ may just prove the album’s ultimate single personification. Banaati is of course Benjamin Banaati, the Swedish producer who, in a remarkably short period of time, has etched close to a dozen releases onto Monstercat’s discography. In Benjamin, Christian discovered a stylistic likemind with which to grace ‘Embers’, and then more broadly the album. Benjamin’s backing proves to be a masterclass in transcendent space, knowing as much when to elementally delay or subtract, as to add. That supplies a production that appears to wrap itself around the listener and one you’ll lean into evermore. That’s lent further weight by Christian’s lyrics, which capture a desire - and perhaps an urgent one at that, to rekindle a fading relationship before the sands run out. Striking a poignant balance between reflectional lament and unstinting hope, his words use the elemental imagery of ‘Embers’ to anchor its high emotional stakes. With Banaati’s studio handling the chilled end of the room, York’s rework traces more of a progressive-trance outline around the track. Through hi-hat ride, hunting horn drift, and the most judicious of snare drive, over 9+ minutes his ‘Embers’ slow-burn and refuse to die. 'Embers’ lights the last of the singles trail to ‘Waking Up In A Northern Town’. Flux BPM Online Album NEWS Artist Press Photo Just In Christian Burns – Waking Up In A Northern Town There’s been a long tradition of musicians from the north of England honouring their origins through their recordings - one that dates back as far as The Beatles’ penning ‘Penny Lane’. ‘North Country Boy’, ‘Hit The North’, ‘Life In A ‘Northern Town’, ‘The North At Its Heights’, ‘It’s Grim Up North’ – just a few of the dozens that, over the following years, have championed its mass. Both culturally and creatively, the North tends to form more than the average core of an artist’s identity. It’s derived from a strong sense of pride in one’s place — not just its achievements, but in its character, humour, and resilience. Up north, ‘grey’ isn’t seen as bleak, but as honest and real: a backdrop that has shaped an unpretentious outlook on all things ‘life’. It engenders a sense of working through adversity, and through that, producing something vital, expressive and, well, frankly … elevated. Now, through his third album dispatch, ‘Waking Up In A Northern Town’, singer, songwriter and BBMAK vocalist, Christian Burns makes his own mark in this grand practice. It could be argued that Burns actually began this process with the release of his last artist album in 2021. ‘Love Songs From Suburbia’s title and singles already played with the theme to a degree. There’s a distinct dichotomy between the two albums’ relationship though, as Christian goes onto explain ... “Love Songs From Suburbia’ was written during one of the lowest points of my life.. ‘Waking Up In A Northern Town’ however was actually created during one of the best. It came at a time when I’d moved to the States and met and married my now-wife. “This album, well … there’s a lot of hope on here. ‘Love Songs’ was more like a plea for it. This is the one where it actually happens." As Christian points out though, “no one wants to hear an LP made up of twelve happy-clappy songs! That’s not real life.” So, in title and lyric, time and again over its vanguard singles, he’s cannily subverted or swerved the issue. The album embarks with ‘Darker Days’, and case-in-point, against its title type, optimism is never far from its surface. Likewise, his title-with-a-twist recent single, ‘Strangers’ counterbalances the more overtly elevating likes of ‘Fall To You’ or the trust-the-moment message of ‘I Will Follow’. "I'd say ‘Waking Up In A Northern Town’ is definitely a continuation of ‘Love Song’s’ direction..." “If it were a movie," he jokes, “you could probably get away with calling it ‘Suburbia 2’. I look at them more as an interrelated body of work though, especially when it comes to the telling of some of the ebbs and flows of my life. Many of the experiences happened to me while I was ‘waking up’ in a ‘northern town’. Though I’m now based in the States, the north’s importance to me will never fade." Feeding into that are the visuals that accompany the album. From ‘the backbone of the north’ – the M62 carriageways which carve their way across its cover, ‘Northern Town’s imagery chimes one-to-one with its sonics. Christian says, "the music videos for the singles were all shot in and around (my hometown of) Wigan, and the artwork is all pictures I took there. Walking down old pathways I used to take when I was a kid, past my old school; in the woods where I used to walk the dog, when I was going through bad times. These are all places I revisited for ‘Northern Town’, which in turn was cycled back into the music evolving around it." Across its singles sway, Christian worked with a number of luminary co-producers - Cosmic Gate, Pretty Pink, Paul Thomas and Little Foot among them. There was one however who left an impression more broadly across its album canvas. Says Christian, “I initially contacted Banaati (of Monstercat fame) to work on the track that became ‘Embers’. GRAMMY-nominated electronic trio Above & Beyond today announces the return of their flagship compilation series with 'Anjunabeats Volume 17', marking a new chapter for the label following a four-year hiatus.

Spanning 35 tracks across two mixes, 'Anjunabeats Volume 17' is the latest edition in the series’ two-decade history. Curated between Above & Beyond’s London studio and their global touring schedule, the compilation captures the evolving sound of Anjunabeats - spotlighting both long-standing collaborators and a new generation of artists shaping the label’s future.

Since its debut in 2003, the Anjunabeats Volume series has played a defining role in electronic music, introducing emerging talent and setting the tone for the label’s globally recognized blend of trance, progressive, and melodic club music. With Volume 17, Above & Beyond continue that tradition, delivering a forward-looking snapshot of where the sound is headed next.

“Following the release of 'Bigger Than All Of Us', it felt important for this next chapter to celebrate the artists that make Anjunabeats such an exciting label to be a part of,” say Above & Beyond. “Volume 17 includes music from artists we’ve worked with for years as well as new faces representing the future of the label.”

The compilation is split across two distinct mixes:

Disc One explores a deeper, progressive palette - from tribal grooves to ’90s trance nostalgia.

Disc Two captures the high-energy Anjunabeats sound built for festival moments around the world.

Leading the release is “When I Look In Your Eyes”, a new collaboration with longtime partner Justine Suissa, which premiered to 15,000 fans at Group Therapy 600 in Mexico City and quickly became one of the most in-demand IDs of the band’s recent world tour.

For the first time in the series’ history, 'Anjunabeats Volume 17' will also be available on vinyl, featuring a 12 track sampler handpicked by Above & Beyond.

The successor to Christian Burns’s 2021 opus ‘Love Songs From Suburbia’ will be ‘Waking Up In A Northern Town’, and as both albums’ titles suggest, they’ll share a closely associated throughline.

Further underscoring that are the five singles already drawn from ‘Northern Town’s wider body: ‘Darker Days’, ‘I Will Follow’ and, most recently, ‘Strangers’ among them. Now, with the LP locked for a June 19 release, Christian and UV man Paul Thomas deliver it an astonishing sixth statement.

Neat shorthand for the alchemic coming-together of Paul’s progressive studio lexicon and Christian’s inimitable and instantly discernible vocals, ‘The Two Of Us’ finds them unified on one outstanding piece of music.

For his part, Paul delivers a masterclass in progressive construction and arrangement, bringing ‘The Two Of Us’ his brand of understated chemistry. Since making his debut in 2019, the Brighton-based DJ and producer has become a label mainstay, with appearances across flagship compilations, remixes for Above & Beyond and Marsh, and a steady stream of globally supported tracks.
