🎧 Progressive Trance Review
⌨️ Ilan Bluestone and Gid Sedgwick - Save A Prayer out on Black Hole Recordings
From the dawn-of-the-synthesiser/New Romantic era, there’s a relatively slim list of tracks that can be convincingly ported into the Gen X world. By the same token though, there are few tracks from those more elaborate times that still manage to positively ache with nous, timelessness and savoir faire. ‘Leave In Silence’, (or ‘Enjoy The Silence’ for that matter); ‘Fade To Grey’; ‘Ghosts’, ‘Say Hello’ – you get the idea.
Regardless, it does takes a certain combining of producer and vocalist to rebottle that type of lightning and produce something that both embodies the essence of a track like ‘Save A Prayer’, while also successfully contemporising it.
And that’s where Ilan Bluestone and Gid Sedgwick come in.
Releasing a six-minute, mood-laden, synth-heavy torch song like ‘Save A Prayer’ was considered a risk in ’82 by both Duran Duran and their label. For a band already known for a certain fashion and energy, releasing something as musically slow-burning and ‘dream-pop’-like was far from a commercially obvious move. When Ilan and Gid were mulling another outing together, it was there united admiration both for the track and its cultural dissidence, that saw them elect to pass it through their own shared lens.
Of the release, Ilan commented, “I’ve regularly found myself gravitating towards ‘80s-inspired sounds”. “Tracks like ‘Paid For Love’ and ‘Can You’ both drew from that world and really seemed to connect with people. Then Gid and I started writing ‘Slow Down’ in 2019, which leaned even further into the synthwave sound, and was finally finished and released last year. In many ways, ‘Save A Prayer’ felt like the natural next step in all this.”
Production-wise, ‘Save A Prayer’ plays perfectly into Ilan’s measured, progressive inclinations, albeit (naturally) now set against a significantly elevated tempo. Through subtle intonational shifts, Gid moves its wistfully longing centre towards something just a hint broader and brighter, while still carrying just the right degree of yearning vulnerability and bittersweet romanticism along with it.
Only the rarest of songs maintain their original relevance over eras, plural. More than four decades on, 'Save A Prayer' still asks the same of its listener - only now experienced through Bluestone and Sedgwick’s inimitable prism.

SUMMARY REVIEW
Ilan Bluestone and Gid Sedgwick’s reimagining of “Save A Prayer” demonstrates an impeccable blend of technical prowess and artistic sensitivity, breathing new life into a timeless classic while delivering a production that is both club-ready and emotionally evocative. From the opening bars, the melodic hooks and harmonics are given a luminous refresh, layered with lush, evolving synths that create a dreamlike atmosphere. Ilan’s progressive touch ensures that each harmonic change feels purposeful and fluid, pulling listeners into a carefully engineered sonic journey.
The track’s sonic engineering and production quality are flawless, with every element occupying its space in the stereo field, revealing a meticulous attention to detail that enhances the song’s immersive qualities. The mixdown and mastering display a perfect balance between warmth and clarity, giving the low end a sturdy foundation without overshadowing Gid’s soaring vocal performance. Effects and spatial design play a crucial role in accentuating the track’s mood, from reverberant vocal tails that hang delicately in the air to subtle delays and modulation effects that create a sense of evolving depth.
Ilan’s arrangement and build dynamics allow the track to breathe and evolve naturally, maintaining tension and release in a way that is both emotionally satisfying and dancefloor effective. The creativity and artistic identity shine through as the duo successfully marries the nostalgic essence of the original with a forward-thinking, modern trance aesthetic. Atmosphere and immersion are at the core of this production. Each section flows into the next with seamless momentum, inviting listeners into a world of bittersweet romanticism that is heightened by Gid’s emotive delivery. His vocal performance captures the yearning vulnerability of the original while benefiting from the pristine recording and processing techniques that modern production affords. Every lyric resonates with emotional impact, making the track as compelling in a private listening session as it is in a festival setting.
On the dancefloor, “Save A Prayer” is remarkably versatile. Its intro and outro are crafted for smooth mixability, with well-defined cue points and looping potential that DJs will appreciate. The energy flow is expertly calibrated, providing natural peaks for communal hands-in-the-air moments without losing the introspective quality that defines the song. Crowd reaction potential is high, as the combination of nostalgia and cutting-edge production creates a powerful, shared emotional experience that transcends generations.
The track’s catchiness and replay value are undeniable, carried by instantly recognizable hooks that make it just as suitable for streaming platforms and playlist placements as it is for Shazam charts and social media edits. In every technical and artistic dimension, Ilan Bluestone and Gid Sedgwick’s “Save A Prayer” achieves what few covers or reinterpretations manage: it honors the legacy of the original while presenting a fresh, masterfully crafted production that thrives across club speakers, headphones, and algorithmic playlists alike. It is a rare example of a track that scores a perfect 10 across all critical criteria, solidifying its place as pure gold for both longtime fans and new listeners. #PureGold #LoveIt

It is a rare moment when two powerhouse artists unite for their first collaboration—rarer still when it marks a defining return. Some partnerships are so pivotal they demand once-in-a-lifetime lyrics—words that capture them, regardless of how difficult those lived experiences may be to transcribe.

Such is the case for ‘Eclipsed By You’ — the first artistic coming-together of EDM songstress HALIENE and Anjuna mainstay Ilan Bluestone, and a striking return to trance for HALIENE.
Of its fruition, HALIENE says, “I've known Ilan through his prolific work over the years, but we hadn’t really connected until we were playing next to each other on an Illenium festival lineup and finally got to chat about music. I had the song ‘Eclipsed By You,’ but was looking for the perfect collaborator to bring it to life. It all clicked from there.”
In the words of Ilan, “I wanted to bring that classic uplifting trance feeling back, but with a cinematic, emotional edge. HALIENE’s vocal instantly connected with me, so the production was all about creating something powerful and immersive that people can truly feel, both on and off the dancefloor.”
Ilan elevated the song with the best balance of HALIENE at her roots, with an uplifting trance-inspired, cinematic yet accessible sound. His production amplifies the emotional weight of her writing—pairing soaring intensity with intimacy, and keeping the track grounded even at its most expansive moments.

While its title may suggest a lighter touch, ‘Eclipsed By You’ reveals itself as an introspective and thought-provoking reflection on identity within love. It captures that pivotal Rubicon where devotion deepens into something all-consuming—and the balance between two people irrevocably shifts.
“The track,” HALIENE elaborates, “is about loving someone so deeply that their presence slowly becomes bigger than your own. It’s the feeling of being pulled into another person’s gravity—where their light outshines yours, and somewhere along the way you start to disappear. It asks the question: when you give someone your whole sky, what happens to your own light?”
Moving on from her 2022 LP debut, ’Heavenly’, HALIENE marks a return to her trance foundations, stepping back into the space where her voice first resonated so deeply, now paired with one of the genre’s most enduring figures. ‘Eclipsed By You’ is out today HERE.

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]“Eclipsed By You” by HALIENE & Ilan Bluestone is a masterclass in modern trance production, achieving a flawless synthesis of emotional resonance and technical precision. At 138 BPM, the track flows with a euphoric energy that showcases Ilan’s meticulous control over rhythm and drive, where the pulsating basslines and tightly sequenced percussion form a rock-solid foundation. The rhythmic design ensures not only seamless momentum but also makes the track remarkably DJ-friendly, with cue points and looping potential perfectly aligned for live sets. Its energy flow transitions effortlessly from delicate, atmospheric builds to explosive drops, keeping listeners in a state of anticipation while maintaining BPM consistency for club and festival performances. Melodically, the song is a triumph of harmonic layering and melodic hooks. HALIENE’s vocals soar across lush pads and arpeggiated synths, creating a rich tapestry of consonant harmonies that elevate the emotional impact of the track. The sound design is pristine, with spatial effects, reverb tails, and stereo imaging constructing an immersive environment that envelops the listener. Every element of the mix—from the crystal-clear lead plucks to the saturated low-end—demonstrates a commitment to dynamic range and loudness balance, ensuring the track maintains its power without succumbing to over-compression. The arrangement unfolds organically, with moments of introspection giving way to cinematic peaks, a storytelling journey that reflects the lyrical theme of love’s consuming gravity. Scientifically, the track’s uplifting trance framework contributes positively to mental health and wellness. Research in music therapy suggests that high-BPM, harmonically rich music can increase dopamine release and improve emotional regulation, fostering motivation in both fitness and mindfulness environments (Thoma et al., 2013; Chanda & Levitin, 2013). Tracks like this, with euphoric build-ups and satisfying drops, can enhance exercise performance, synchronize movement in group fitness classes, and induce flow states that reduce stress and elevate mood. The consistent rhythmic drive also promotes neural entrainment, which aids concentration and supports meditative engagement, making “Eclipsed By You” as suitable for wellness classes as it is for festival peak moments. Ultimately, “Eclipsed By You” represents a perfect fusion of creative artistry and technical mastery. Its originality lies in weaving HALIENE’s introspective lyricism with Ilan Bluestone’s signature melodic trance palette, achieving both emotional resonance and high replay value. From its immersive atmosphere and club-ready energy to its capacity to uplift the mind and body, this track stands as a testament to the enduring power of trance music. #PureGold Love It[/content]

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]ilan Bluestone & Giuseppe De Luca – This Town (Club Mix) delivers an electrifying proglifting trance experience at 134 BPM that masterfully balances high-octane energy with emotional depth. From a production standpoint, the track demonstrates meticulous attention to sonic detail. The low end is anchored by heavy, rolling sub-bass and deep, well-compressed kick drums that punch through the mix without muddying the layers. Above this, crisp percussion elements and tight hi-hats create a driving rhythm, while subtle reverb tails and stereo widening give the track a spacious club-ready feel. The arrangement builds gradually, showcasing Bluestone’s signature layering technique. Sweeping pads and atmospheric textures lead into shimmering plucks and lush arpeggiated synths, setting up a euphoric lift before the drop. It’s the honesty in both his music and personality that has made ilan Bluestone a staple in the dance and trance world for over a decade.

As an Anjunabeats stalwart, the early ‘Anthem Test’ Instagram previews of his late-night writing sessions forged an instant connection with his audience years ahead of it becoming common practice on social media platforms. He provided the audience with insight into what it’s like to be a musician, producer, and DJ in the 2010s — a sentiment echoed in his high-energy, euphoric, and melodic music that has taken him to the stages of Madison Square Garden, Tomorrowland, Creamfields, and EDC.

His albums are the clearest window into his current headspace as a musician. 2018’s ‘Scars’ is a love letter to the inspirations that had informed and imprinted his early musical journey. 2021’s ‘Impulse’, a thoroughly ‘Tronce’ coming of age LP embracing the high energy club side of life post pandemic.

Completing a trilogy of ‘heart on sleeve’ LPs is ‘Ignite’, the story of an artist reigniting his creative fires after burnout in 2023.
“Touring ‘Impulse’ after the pandemic was amazing” ilan shares. “But by November 2023, I’d played 70 shows in just over a year. The constant travel took its toll, and I had to come off the road to recharge by being in the studio again, explore new sounds, and work with fresh collaborators.”

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]ilan Bluestone's latest release, "Mewo Fie," is more than just a song—it's an emotional journey woven with sonic textures that captivate from the first beat. “There are darker moments on there, but ultimately ‘Ignite’ is about the emotions and experiences that spark us into life. Writing these records felt like a weight coming off my shoulders and I’m hoping they inspire others to tackle and overcome their challenges in life”.
Bluestone’s love for string orchestration shines through the album, including the opening track ‘40’ with composer Jasper Blunk. The title track and first single, ‘Ignite’, is an electrifying blend of hypnotic melodies, soaring vocals, and explosive drops. It partners ilan with two artists who have been heavily involved in his story so far: Maor Levi and Giuseppe De Luca, marking the first time the three have collaborated on a record. Leeds-based writer and singer Giuseppe features more across the album, as well as on records with longtime contributors EL Waves, Gid Sedgwick and Ellen Smith. The album also introduces several new voices to ilan’s story.

ilan Bluestone’s Ignite arrives on Anjunabeats this August and is available to pre-order now on vinyl via the Anjuna Music Store. The title track, featuring Maor Levi and Giuseppe De Luca, is out now.

A revitalised ilan returns to touring soon, with the Ignite tour kicking off this weekend in Prague. Check out the tour dates here: ilanbluestone.com/tour

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Ilan Bluestone and Maor Levi's collaboration with Giuseppe De Luca on "Ignite" is an electrifying 132 BPM anthem that showcases impeccable production techniques and masterful attention to detail. The track opens with energetic, pulsating basslines that create an immediate sense of momentum, perfectly complemented by techy, crisp kicks that provide a solid rhythmic foundation. The groove is driven by electro-infused chunky rhythms, expertly layered to deliver a powerful, dancefloor-ready vibe. The production shines in its ability to merge these dynamic elements with melodramatic string arrangements, creating an emotional depth that contrasts beautifully with the high-energy beats. This juxtaposition adds a rich, cinematic quality to the track. A standout feature is the atmospheric breakdown, where the production takes a step back to highlight Giuseppe De Luca's soulful vocals. The use of spacious reverb and subtle delay effects around his voice adds a haunting, ethereal quality, allowing it to become the focal point. This section is meticulously crafted with ambient pads and nuanced sound design that create an immersive listening experience. The transition from the breakdown to the climax is marked by a brief, strategic silence—a technique that heightens anticipation. Following this pause, big uplifting synths burst forth, characterized by layered, detuned leads that create a wide, expansive soundscape. The synths are rich with harmonic overtones, adding to the track's euphoric, festival-friendly energy. "Ignite" is a testament to Bluestone and Levi's technical prowess, blending complex production techniques with emotional resonance. [item value="10"] ilan Bluestone & Jasper Blunk - 40 [/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Ilan Bluestone’s latest release, "40," co-produced with Jasper Blunk, emerges as a vibrant tribute to his 40th birthday, showcasing a masterclass in trance production under the Anjunabeats label. This track encapsulates the essence of Bluestone's signature sound, blending meticulous technical craftsmanship with an emotionally charged musical narrative. From a technical standpoint, "40" operates at a driving 130 BPM—a tempo that perfectly balances energy with melodic space, allowing each sonic element to breathe yet maintain dancefloor momentum. The foundational layer features pulsating basslines crafted using sidechain compression techniques, which create that characteristic 'pumping' effect synonymous with peak-time trance anthems. The bass is tightly locked with thumping drums, where multi-layered kick drums are EQ’d to carve out space for the sub frequencies, ensuring clarity and punch. The mainstage-friendly kicks are complemented by crisp hi-hats and percussive elements that have been carefully panned and stereo-enhanced to create a wide, immersive soundstage. Subtle reverb and delay effects add depth without muddying the mix, showcasing the producers’ adept control over spatial dynamics. A standout feature of "40" is its cinematic orchestral strings, which are not merely background embellishments but integral to the track's melodic and emotional trajectory. These strings are meticulously arranged, likely utilizing high-quality sample libraries combined with live recordings to achieve their lush, authentic resonance. Layered harmonies and dynamic swells, enhanced with automation of volume and reverb parameters, contribute to the track’s cinematic grandeur.
The breakdown is a tour de force of sound design. Heavenly operatic voices float above a bed of rich strings, their ethereal quality achieved through advanced vocal processing techniques including reverb modulation and pitch shifting. This section crescendos into an explosion of euphoric, colorful synths—likely constructed using a combination of analog and digital synthesizers. The synths employ complex modulation matrices, with LFOs (Low-Frequency Oscillators) and envelope shaping to add movement and texture. As "40" ascends to its climactic peak, the arrangement becomes a tapestry of sonic elements—each meticulously balanced within the mix. Dynamic range compression is skillfully applied to maintain energy without sacrificing dynamic integrity, ensuring that each drop hits with maximum impact. In conclusion, "40" is not just a track; it’s a sonic adventure. It’s a showcase of Ilan Bluestone and Jasper Blunk’s profound understanding of both musicality and production science. The track’s ability to evoke imagery of massive crowds, unified in euphoric release, is a testament to its powerful composition and flawless execution. #PureGold Love iT [/content]
