ALBUM REVIEW: Dusky - Outer out on 17 Steps

A journey through Dusky’s many influences, ‘Outer’ takes in everything from Belgian techno, UK hardcore and vintage progressive house to ambient, new beat and electronica - all reshaped into modern hybrids in the duo’s unique style.

With the album representing a clear artistic progression for Dusky, past singles such as ’Ingrid Is A Hybrid’, warehouse techno curveball ’Sort It Out Sharon’ featuring godfather of grime Wiley and the atmospheric ‘Long Wait’ with Solomon Grey were last week followed by the menacing club anthem ‘Songs Of Phase’ - christened Essential New Tune by Pete Tong.

Elsewhere, the duo’s unique capacity for inventive sampling and cleverly reshaping their influences remains as dominant as it did on their breakthrough underground club singles. From the Orbital-referencing synth-and-strings crescendos of intro ‘All We Ever Needed’ to the UK house meets hardcore-era Prodigy of ‘Runny Nose’, ‘Outer’ is rooted in club culture and history.

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]One of the most sought after duo's present their album Outer. Dusky who have impressed us so far with variety of singles deliver a powerful album that aims to make you listen carefully and differently. All We Ever Needed is the perfect intro style track packed with nice synths, chilling ambience and heavenly voices in a magical soundscape along with classic house diva vocal sample. Tiers is melodic dreamy deep house production with thumping basslines, pumping drums, electronic synths, distant male vocal samples and irresistable rhythm. Runny Nose is dark bouncy progressive techno with certain industrial futuristic touches with electronic synthy hooks and nice breakdown with distant vocals and great aggressive intensity. Outer is deep synthy driven production with soulful vocal samples while underneath raw and  pumping techno groove drives the track forward. Sort It Out Sharon (feat. Wiley) is an intresting hybrid of old school hardcore with dark moody basslines and rap style vocal that adds certain dark urban futuristic atmosphere. Long Wait features the beloved Solomon Grey on vocals while underneath the electronic early 80's pop production will add certain magic at the final result.  Songs Of Phase has that old school mettalic raw bassline, thumping bouncy groove and robotic female vocals that work perfectly to add that early 90's naughty rave touch to it. Swansea (feat. Gary Numan) is strong electro pop production with certain 80's touch. Marble includes a dreamy male vocal within ambient soundcsapes. Ingrid is Hybrid is the very successful single with slow jamming electro breakbeat groove reminiscent of early 90's rave anthems with classic eurodance diva style vocals. Spruce lastly is the perfect outro production with vintage style male vocals upon slow relaxing break beat groove that travel your mind to magical spaces and places. It is such a perfect album and highly recommended. Don't ask why when then answer is self evident! #PureGold Love it [/content]
