REVIEW: Martin Roth - Mel / Maya out on Anjunadeep

In the two years since his last original outing on the label, the unforgettable “Beautiful Life”, Martin Roth has developed his deep hypnotic sounds on labels like Poesie Musik and Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat. He returns to Anjunadeep with “Mel / Maya”, two dark, techno influenced gems showcasing Martin’s ear for spellbinding club music.

“Mel” is a surging monster of a track, driven by huge rumbling low end beneath subtle swirling melodies. Combining dark, techy elements with classic progressive textures, “Mel” is a fine example of the current underground sound in Martin’s hometown of Berlin.

A stand out on Anjunadeep 06, “Maya” is another moody piece of house music, primed for a 4AM dancefloor. Big thudding percussion masks a gentle melody that ebbs and flows into an epic breakdown, packed full of atmospheric rising pads.

On remix duties are two emerging talents Peter Pardeike and Whomi. Tackling “Mel” is Whomi, who has made waves recently with impressive remixes of Ultraista and Soul Button. He takes a minimal approach, building from murky beginnings into an incredible crescendo throughout the breakdown. A serious dancefloor weapon in the right hands!

Following a hugely supported release on Innervisions with Marcus Worgull, fellow Berliner Peter Pardeike turns his hand to “Maya" in distinctive fashion. Stripping back to focus on bassline and piano, the track takes a leftfield turn into arpeggio territory. Another memorable moment on a highly anticipated comeback EP.

Dimitri Kechagias review: Anjunadeep is still on that celebration mood as the latest compilation Anjunabeats vol.6 topped many well known download shop dance charts with great ease and without huge marketing campaigns. Anjunadeep is the label that grows thanks to the positive word of mouth that its growing army of supporters spreading in the social media.  Martin Roth who was well known many years before for his excellent trance releases continues to evolve his style into a much more deeper moodier groovier darker sound that still retains some trancy aesthetics. Certainly Mel, the first track on this Anjunadeep release, is not what classically someone can characterise as deep house cause actually Martin applies great melodic layers and atmospheres that carry away the listener on a  surprising journey. His kick, drums and basslines are more trancy sounding rather than tribal or funky housy we get on deep house productions. With slightly psy trance elements in it  is a slow groover that builds a wonderful mythical soundscape and challenge us to follow him inside this dark cold distant kingdom of sounds, samples, effects and most importantly haunting mysterious atmosphere. Maya on other hand moves on that tribal tech house groove but with heavenly ethnic vocals and brooding bassline that sounds dominating. He adds slowly the acid overtones until to land on the breakdown where he allows to come in the surface the melancholic retro vintage style melody that carries on the second part and helps the listener to totally lost it in the music and become one with the liquid floating sounds. Mel is remixed by Whomi who respects the original by re imaging it in a more deeper and even melodic melancholic sound that is hypnotic, elevating, cinematic and truly inspiring with addition of many hylophone riffs and piano melody. The breakdown will surprise with the playful way that distorts the original theme and manage to come up with something fresh and elevating.  Its one of those tracks that instantly bring in your mind mental images. Peter Pardeike remix deducts the tribal feel of the original and goes into an even more abstract territory with deep minimal kicks, deep basslines and magical atmosphere that certainly will attract your attention if it happens to hear it in a club or radio show. The breakdown introduces the distorted twisted melody that actually continues on the main section while on the outro section he adds piano chords and superb atmospherics. It's such an amazing package with stunning originals and perfect remixes that will appeal to those who go not for the obvious and search under the surface! #PureGold Love It
