INTERVIEW: Best of 2011 Interview with Basil O'Glue

Name:  Basil O'Glue
Location: Greece

Basil O’Glue (Haris Vasiloglou) born and raised in Athens, now lives in a small city near Thessaloniki – Northern Greece.

He has studied 3d animation and graphic design, and now works as a photographer. As a teenager he loved electronic music, especially bands as The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers etc. A few years later he started to produce his own music with some amateur software. His first attempts were really not cool, but after getting his first midi keyboard and some equipment while learning new programs, there was an obvious improvement. His producing tools are, Propellerheads Reason, some mastering vst plug-in and a couple of good monitors! Till now (2010) he has gained the attention of great dj’s such as Armin Van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Ferry Corsten, Sander Van Doorn, M.I.K.E. and many many others

Interview is written and conducted by Dimitri Kechagias, Radio/Club dj & Music Journalist

Dimitri: Do you consider 2011 as a positive, negative or neutral year for the progress of the Electronic Dance Music scene?

Basil O'Glue: Hello and many thanks for the mini interview!  Now, how can someone define a positive or a negative year?By Releases? Radioshows?  Events? Speaking of trance and progressive music, in 2011 we saw some killer  new tunes, some ok - andsome really bad ones , so its a bit complicated to say if 2011 was a positive year.

About events or radioshows, I guess it's a negative year...
Some weeks ago Judge Julles  was out of his of BBC Radio 1  after so many years, replaced by a dubstep show, so its not a good
sign for trance music...
Even with the djmag top 100 list after so many years the # 1 is not a trance dj. Now, a lot of trance fans would say, "ah djmag top 100, what a joke" , but was it ok when Tiesto (back then) or PVD or Armin were #1? If I really have to say my opinion about 2011, I might say it was a negative year...

Dimitri: Do you believe that 2011 was a good , indifferent or bad year for the development of your personal career?

Basil O'Glue: Definitely, a good year!  I gained huge support by Markus Schulz, and through him I got a lot of new fans, which is fantastic! I did a guest mix for Markus's famous radio show, "Global Dj Broadcast", and for Solarstone's show "Solaris International" as well. I also joined Bargz Music for bookings and management. Finally during 2011  Christopher Vassilakis  and I started a new alias named "Celluloid".
It is a progressive, technosounding trance alias :) We are trance suckers for many years, so we have a lot of old school progressive
trance influence.

Dimitri: THE A to Z of the Best of the Year 2011.

a)    Best Full Release of the year(original & remixes)

I liked almost all of their tracks.

i)    Best Remixer  of the year  on personal or others peoples tracks
Basil O'Glue:    David Granha

Basil O'Glue:    A lot of labels had some massive tunes this year, Afterglow, Coldharbour, Spellbinding, Arnej Music, Lowbit Records, MicroCastle

k)    Best Newborn in 2011 label of the year
Basil O'Glue:    Tool Trance Records had their first release in mid 2010 so I could consider it as a newborn label right?. I liked a lot of their tracks, I hope they will keep releasing quality stuff. Hyline Music also is a well promising newborn label

Basil O'Glue:    I think the Orjan Nilsen "In my Opinion" is the best one, Wellenrausch  did also an amazing album "Personal Epos". Markus Schulz pres Dakota "Thoughts Become Things 2" and compilations Markus's Prague 11 of course, (including 2 remixes of me), the Arnej "Musical Evolution" (Including a Celluloid remix)!

Dimitri: Can you please let us know your plans for 2012 for your djing, productions or label?
Basil O'Glue: My major plan for the future is to do an artist album. I don't know if it will happen in 2012,  time will tell.

Dimitri: On the other side is it possible to tell us the track, album, artist/dj that you believe were the worst of the year and why?
Basil O'Glue: Eh, ok in general that new mixed trance/house/electro genre is not for me. I would pick trance's "favorites", David Guetta, and Swedish House Mafia. Totally respect to what they do but I don't like it.

Dimitri: Please give us your wishes for 2012 and your small piece of advice for anyone that reads this interview and aspires to get into music production, djing, or music production in general.
Basil O'Glue: The best tip for a new producer is to keep trying and trying. Happy new year to everyone!
