LOCATION Huis Vasari (Vrije Academie) | Herengracht 368, Amsterdam- Workshop: How Local Governments Can Foster Sustainable Innovation On Festival Grounds
ADE Green - Dennis Sieperda (Project Manager, Inno-Quarter), Hiltje Pritchard (Lecturer Master's Design Driven Innovation)
A practical workshop on designing, implementing and evaluating experiments at festival grounds in collaboration with local and regional governments.
9 out of 10 innovations fail. Often because a prototype is not sufficiently tested before it is put on the market. To speed up innovation processes and better understand the potential and limitations of sustainable ideas, assumptions need to be validated more frequently and earlier. Being temporary mini-societies, festivals are great places to experiment with sustainable innovations. They can offer real-life contexts similar to the real world in a safe, fun and laid-back atmosphere. But how can local governments and start-ups use festivals as testing grounds?
Part 1: Start your collaboration, hosted by Dennis Sieperda (projectmanager Inno-Quarter)
Do you want to understand why and learn how you can build a collaboration between local or regional governments, start-ups and festivals? In this part of the program, we share best practices between these three key stakeholders and answer the following questions:
- Why do local governments need sustainable innovation?
- What do start-ups need to test?
- What do festivals need to facilitate innovation?
Part 2: How to design your action plan, hosted by Hiltsje Pritchard (Lecturer Master Design Driven Innovation)
Once all key stakeholders are on board, you co-design your plan and goals together. In this second part, we guide you through designing, implementing and evaluating experiments at festivals based on our research at Inno-Quarter.
Grab this opportunity to ignite your own collaboration!
Are you a festival organiser or a local government aiming for more successful and sustainable innovation? Invite your (future) key stakeholders to follow this workshop together: a first step to ignite your collaboration on facilitating sustainable innovations at festival grounds.
This workshop is presented by Inno-Quarter
In 2017, over 20 European partners joined forces to facilitate start-ups with European festivals as places for experimentation in the Interreg North Sea Region project Inno-Quarter. All partners believe festivals are great playgrounds for sustainable experimentation. All their research is shared in the Festival Experimentation Guide, helping you to build experiments with all the stakeholders you need. All participants will get the Festival Experimentation Guide as a present. Find more information about this project, which is co-financed by the European Union, over here.
Who is this workshop for, and how can I sign up?
This workshop is designed for festival organisers, policymakers, local or regional government representatives, and sustainable start-ups. We have limited seats available, so please sign-up here to participate.

- Brainstorm: How Can the Dutch Music Community Help Address the Climate Crisis?
Traditionally, festivals and pop venues have been the place for progressive ideas and ideals. They played a key role in major social change. Time for a big brainstorm: What is the music industry's role in the climate crisis? In what ways can festivals, venues and artists engage audiences on this issue in 2023?
Are you a festival organiser, artist, label manager or creative from the music industry in The Netherlands and up for some real change? Join this brainstorm together with Mitchell van Dooijeweerd (DGTL) and Frederike Berendsen (Music Declares Emergency NL), moderated by Matthea de Jong (We Are Warming Up).
The climate crisis is here and now. The consequences are already being felt and will get worse in the future, but they are also partly preventable. More and more artists are speaking out against climate change. Billie Eilish is organising a climate event, Coldplay tours CO2 neutral, and in the Netherlands too, there are more and more artists who are dedicating themselves to change. But how do you do that? What challenges do you run into? What role can we play?
If you look back at all the major social changes, artists and festivals often played a key role. Think of Woodstock where 400,000 "hippies" spoke out against the Vietnam War; of the LiveAid artists who stood up against world hunger, or the countless songs created around the fall of the Berlin Wall. Think of Glastonbury which supported the fight against nuclear weapons, or Exit festival which grew out of the student protests against Milosevic.
Now that we are experiencing the effects of climate change, it's time for a big brainstorm. Not about plastic cups, but about how to use your platform to engage the audience in the biggest challenge of our generation.
This brainstorm is initiated by Warming Up & Music Declares Emergency and supported by ADE Green.
Join us!
Are you a festival organiser, artist, label manager or creative from the music industry in The Netherlands and up for some real change? Join this brainstorm in Dutch language. You need an ADE Green ticket or ADE Pro passepartout and pre-register via this link to access the brainstorm room. This brainstorm is scheduled before the ADE Green Conference together with some other closed industry meetings in the morning.

- How to Support an Artistic Activist?
What happens when activism and artistic expression come together? What is artistic activism and which forms can it take? What can we achieve through artistic activism and how can artists, activists, festivals and brands work together?
In this session Alina Minkova and Louise Lindén from LiveGreen (Sweden) will share two stories of artistic activism that take place in two different realities — one in democratic Sweden and the other in authoritarian Russia.
Alina Minkova was born in Russia and has been working and living in Sweden for 7 years. With her Russian roots and the Swedish life she built, she experiences the world from multiple perspectives and feels deeply that artistic activism is one of the last resorts in expressing ideas and opinions in an authoritarian country. She will share her personal experience to support people living in war-torn countries, human rights crises and ecological challenges. And for those who are ready to support people in authoritarian countries she will give you recommendations to safeguard the security of the supporter and the activist.
Louise Linden from Sweden founded LiveGreen – a youth-led festival for climate action – when she was 18 years-old. LiveGreen has been a pioneer within sustainable festival production and change work through music since 2011. Now she collaborates with activists from Fridays For Future (the movement that was started by Greta Thunberg) in Sweden to organise Climate Live concerts. The purpose is to use the power of music and events to unite and mobilise people as well as to put pressure on the people in power to take action against the climate crisis. With the first concert taking place in October 2021 in the centre of Stockholm attended by 12 000 people and 250 000 online, Climate Live continues to take over music stages, big and small, with the goal to keep the topic of climate justice high on the agenda and give young activists a new platform to create change.

- Campsite waste; a single use plastic problem in need for a radical mindshift
ADE Green - Megan Best, Teresa Moore and Frank Kimenai
For those of you who have been camping before, this might be an unimaginable thought: after a couple of days of physical activity, fresh air and sleeping out in the open, you pack up – but not quite, because you decide to leave your tent, sleeping bag, and some other items behind. Someone will clean it up, right?
For anyone involved in the post-production process of multiple-day festivals that involve a campsite, however, this has been the uncomfortable and troublesome reality. Managing resource flows at festivals is no easy task – and it gets even worse if around 20% of camping materials are left behind. Even without setting out the why’s and how’s of it: campsite waste is uniquely a festival problem. This means that solutions will have to be found from within the festival industry – or does it?
During this panel, we are going to dive into tents, mattresses and other campsite materials that are left behind once more. After all, campsite waste has been problematized and discussed for a while. As a result, there are a few decent examples of actionable solutions that work, but on a large scale, it still makes too little difference. Panelists Megan Best (Native Events), Theresa Moore (Green Festival Awards) and Eric van Eerdenburg (Lowlands) are going to envision the future of festival campsites together with the audience. How can the problem be tackled? Does it require an entirely different way of designing festival campsites? What’s the role of retail companies in a world where cheap tents are sold without an incentive to reuse them? Are there ways to combat disposable culture among consumers? Answering these questions is undoubtedly a crucial step towards making green camping the default.
This panel is presented by Plastic Promise, a pioneering collaboration of the Dutch events industry that aims for a reduction of single use plastics on events and festivals. This programme is initiated by Green Events Netherlands and supported by the Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management.

- Workshop Circular Event Management
Mitchell Van Dooijeweerd is the Sustainability Manager at the Revolution Foundation, a creator of sustainable and circular systems implemented at events worldwide such as the DGTL Festival. This pioneering festival gained widespread media attention around the world and is recognised as the most sustainable festival in the world. He will be your guide on how to manage a circular festival.
As festivals grow larger, louder and attract a bigger audience, organisers continue to look for ways to get the most out of their materials and minimise the loss of valuable resources.
There’s no need to reinvent the wheel when the answer is circular!
Circularity provides a sustainable answer to the 21st century’s loss of valuable resources, pollution and biodiversity loss, where closed systems like festivals are perfect grounds to develop future-proof systems.Implementing efficient ways to manage food, energy, sanitation, and materials is a sure way to minimise any festival's footprint and help it bloom year after year.
In this hands-on workshop, Mitchell will share his insights into a full circular festival, showcasing the roadmap, audience engagement and systems implemented towards a circular DGTL 2022.
There will be room for questions.

- Workshop Revelland: Make your event immersive and inclusive
ADE Green - Marianne Dijkshoorn, Sam Piek and Nikki Manuputty
Accessibility of an event is often seen as something difficult: something that costs money, time and effort and nobody knows how to do it. And if something happens about inclusion, it often leads to exclusion. Think of a wheelchair stage that is very suitable for the view lines but which separates the wheelchair user from the group of friends that person comes with. With that image in mind, it is not surprising that development in this area is proceeding very slowly.
Sam Piek, Mariannne Dijkshoorn and Nikki Manuputty will share how to approach accessibility from a creative point of view. This way you can offer a program that is both immersive and inclusive. The moment the regular public also benefits from an investment in the field of accessibility, it becomes much easier to get started. In this session, we guide attendees in a new way of looking at things that make the discussion about inclusion a lot lighter and, above all, easier!
Possibilize created this interactive workshop building upon best-practice and knowledge from the European network Revelland. Revelland is a collective network of passionate artists, directors and event organisers, determined to make performing arts accessible to everyone. They're on a quest for cultural transcendence through immersive experiences. There will be room for dialogue, ideas and questions.

- No Excuse For Single Use! Reusables At Events Presented by Paardekooper
ADE Green - Tijl Couzij (ITGWO), Camille Guitteau (Co-Founder & Director, Bye Bye Plastic), Alan Cambell (Technical Director, The LCA Research)
Environmental damage from plastics entails worldwide pollution, from the poles to the deep oceans and our human body. The pollution of waterways leads to animal deaths, and microplastics end up in our food chain. Especially single-use plastic is increasingly becoming a global environmental threat. But change is coming now…. We must change our approach: from ‘Take, Make, and Waste’ to a circular system where products and materials are designed for reuse with minimal value loss or environmental damage.
In this program, event organisers and artists will learn everything about plastic policies from the EU, using reusable food tableware at festivals and how to use the power of music to say goodbye to single-use plastics.
Plastic Policies
Waste is a human design flaw that does not exist in nature. Switching from products to systems will lead us toward circularity – but system change calls for a new strategic approach. The European Commission is working on the Single Use Plastics directive to make reusable solutions a new norm. During this panel, a policy maker will share important insights on strategic approaches – and the implications for festivals and events in the years ahead.
Reuse is essential in a circular economy
As an expert on the environmental impact of packaging, Dr. Alan Campbell (The LCA Centre) will illustrate why reusable alternatives are essential in a circular transition – based on scientific research.
Tijl Couzij (Into The Great Wide Open) has been taking the lead in reusable alternatives for years. He initiated a pilot on reusables in collaboration with Paardekooper and the Green Deal Circular Festivals. A reusable system for food was piloted this summer at DGTL festival, Castlefest and Into The Great Wide Open. Tijl will share his lessons learned to make it easier for other organisations to switch to reusables.
How to use the power of music and say goodbye to plastics.
While working on new initiatives for reusable alternatives, we will have to wave goodbye to single-use plastics in the event industry. Bye Bye Plastic is a disruptive foundation working to remove single-use plastics from the industry. Using the power of music, they aim to create a positive ripple effect on society. Camille Guitteau is the co-founder of the foundation; she will share how their uncompromising approach contributes to a single-use-plastic-free industry through a movement started off by the global artist community.

- Workshop: How to Grow a Transformative Mindset?
ADE Green - Laureline Simon (Founder & Executive Director, One Resilient Earth)
As planetary boundaries are broken down one after another, how can we as artists and music industry leaders, best respond to this existential threat? Our minds are used to focusing on today, tomorrow and sometimes a few years ahead if we are planning a market analysis or creating a three-year company strategy. The pitfall is we put all our focus and energy into sustainable practices which try to solve today’s problems with today’s solutions, without seeing the bigger picture, including future challenges and opportunities.
Change starts within. Ideas emerge from our human minds in dialogue with our bodies. How can we use emotions, imagination and creativity to drive change and build a thriving world? In this workshop Laureline Simon (founder of One Resilient Earth) will guide you through how to grow a transformative mindset, in order to respond to the climate and biodiversity crises through regeneration and transformation. By learning about regenerative resilience and doing different exercises together you will tap into new ways of experiencing transformative thinking.
This interactive workshop builds upon the latest climate science including climate psychology, and emergence theory. There will be room for dialogue, ideas and questions.

The climate crisis is rooted in systems of global injustice and extraction. People who have contributed the least to greenhouse gas emissions are on the frontlines of climate change impacts, and those who are already marginalized in our communities face multiplying inequalities. The most affected don’t have an equal seat at the table in deciding who gets to pollute, how much, who benefits – and who pays.
How do we center justice, regeneration, and reparation in climate action? What does it mean to connect our work to tackle social, economic, and environmental injustices? What can the creative community do to tell braver stories, challenge the systems we live in, and create openings for a better world?
Our panelists share different perspectives of how they are working to make sense of some of these big questions. Explore the themes of this panel in more depth in Julie's Bicycle Creative Climate Justice Hub, a dynamic library of climate justice resources curated for the arts and culture community, published earlier in 2022.

About Future Festival Tools
The ecosystem of sustainable knowledge, collaboration and suppliers in the event sector has slowly been developing over the past years. Where there was little know-how only a decade ago, a great network of organisers, projects and initiatives has emerged by now. In 2021, seven pioneering organisations teamed up to create a new knowledge base: Green Events, Le LABA, Christopher Johnson, Green Music Initiative, Julie's Bicycle, The Nationwide Caterers Association (NCASS), and Euei. Future Festival Tools is co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, and provides a set of freely accessible knowledge tools, including self-assessment, inspirational stories from across Europe and an e-learning course.

- Combat Climate Change, How the Music Industry Needs to Start a Cultural Transformation
John E. Fernandez (Director, MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative), Norhan Bayomi (DJ Nourey), Anna Johnson (Sustainability and Environment Officer, Involved Group), Rob van Wegen (Sustainability Supervisor, ESNS), Luke Howell (Founder & Director, Hope Solutions), Sally Freeman (Director, Love Live Music)
We need a cultural transformation to redesign the way we eat, live, travel, work and party. We need to shift from small, isolated actions to collaborative impact. But how can the music industry contribute to the necessary changes? What if we haven’t started our Green journey? How do we start and make significant changes in everything we do?
Scientists all over the world have warned governments and citizens of the dangers of climate change, but the majority haven't taken enough action. Our attempts to limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5 - 2 degrees celsius (as agreed in the Paris Agreement) are falling short.
Gus Speth (a US advisor on climate change )
“I used to think that top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and climate change. I thought that thirty years of good science could address these problems. I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy, and to deal with these we need a cultural and spiritual transformation. And we scientists don't know how to do that."
The Electronic Music industry has global reach and can unleash imagination and passion like very few other industries can. It inspires us, helps us dream and ask big questions, which can all pave the way to a better future for all of us. It has a unique position – and could, through positive examples and practical solutions – help guide millions of people towards a climate-friendly future and help our political leaders to bring about the required global transformation.
Our session will start with a keynote address from John E. Fernandez (Director of MIT Environmental Solutions), who will describe what a climate-friendly future means, what it looks like and why climate action is urgently needed. The session will examine how those who have the resources and knowledge to facilitate change can take the necessary collective responsibility.
We will then examine the challenge from three different angles: that of an artist, that of the festival manager and that of a record label. We will explore the role the music industry could play in the climate–crisis, and what responsibility all players have to ignite a cultural change to reduce and reverse climate change. Sally Freeman (moderator) will facilitate the conversation with Norhan Bayomi (Electronic Music Producer and a Trance DJ) Anna Johnson (Sustainability and Environment Officer at Involved Group) and Rob van Wegen (Sustainability Supervisor at Eurosonic Noorderslag).
Last but not least Luke Howell (Founder Hope Solutions) will share state of the art innovation and practice on the use of sustainable energy in Coldplay’s new tour, as a best-practice example for how artists can step up their game and support sustainable solutions for our industry and far beyond.

- Short Cuts: Live Venues - Building a Business Ecosystem and Creating Opportunities
Mauricio Soares (Director, M-S Live & ARCA)
The business ecosystem approach consists of building resilience and creating opportunities for companies and venues by understanding, respecting and acting upon the interdependent relationships they have with both internal and external stakeholders. Understanding the long-term goals of your landlord, developing a vision for gradually repurposing, and actively working as a placemaking tool creates multiple opportunities for venues, as does working with community leaders to improve the lives of the people living nearby.

Moderator: Anish Sood
A perfect storm of challenges is brewing for the live sector, for the live industry and large-scale live events, The technical skill gap caused by COVID is resulting in events having to be cancelled or downscaled because they are unable to find enough lighting and sound technicians, transport and energy costs are rising at unprecedented rates, and as a result ticket prices and the cost of onsite catering are also being pushed up. And all this is happening against a background of a general drop in how much disposable income people have available. It's crunch time for the live industry, so we asked some leading players to share with us what they intend to do in the short and medium term, how they intend to adapt their business models, and what role new technologies might be able play in creating new, cheaper and less site-specific events.

LOCATION Felix Meritis | Keizersgracht 324, AmsterdamHow to redesign festivals to be accessible for all presented by HandicapNL
ADE Green - Lucille Werner, Kelamo Masali and Laura Jones
Let’s not be blind to the fact that most events aren’t designed to be accessible for everyone, even though there are a whopping one billion people worldwide who experience some form of disability – whether that’s from birth, or acquired later in life. That’s roughly 15% of the world population without proper access to most events and festivals, simply because they aren’t set up with accessibility in mind. It’s about time to make their lives more eventful. It begs the question: How can event professionals step up their game towards more accessible events? It all starts with seeing disability in a different way…
One way of looking at disability is through the social model, which says that disability is caused by the way society is organized, rather than by a person’s impairment or difference. It seeks to remove barriers that restrict life choices and opportunities for people with disabilities. By removing these barriers at festivals, more people are given the chance to share new ideas, music and food with like-minded people – and they get important opportunities to express themselves creatively, meet new people, recharge, and go home feeling inspired. Two years without festivals taught us that these experiences are an important aspect of the lives of many. So why can’t we make them accessible for every human being?
Find out in our conversation with DJ Laura Jones and festival organizer Kelamo Masali from STRAF_WERK. We will dive deep into how we can change these barriers in a way that more people can experience a festival together. To create a collective change within the Dutch festival industry, HandicapNL Foundation and Green Events launch a new collaboration on accessibility with pioneering Dutch music festivals. Together they will present their ambition towards cognitive and physical accessibility to Lucille Werner, a Member of the Dutch Parliament.

LOCATION Felix Meritis | Keizersgracht 324, Amsterdam- How Can Festivals Accelerate Circular & Climate-Neutral Transitions in Urban Areas?
The urgency to accelerate the transition toward a more circular and climate-neutral society is widespread. With 70% of the world population living in urban areas, most of the sustainability challenges culminate in cities, making them key in the transition towards a circular and climate-neutral society. With thousands of festivals taking place in Europe, reaching millions of people, we truly believe that festivals can contribute to solving these challenges in close cooperation with cities.
The circular transition and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are the two main priorities of the European Union and its member states. On a European level, ambitious goals have been set by the European Green Deal, the EU ‘Fit for 55’ package, and the EU’s new circular action plan. The government of The Netherlands and the City of Amsterdam embrace these ambitious goals. However, achieving these goals will require a joint effort of all sectors and society.
Festivals can contribute by limiting their own negative impact, inspire a green movement among their visitors and serve as a testing ground for circular innovation for cities. Ultimately, the aim is to achieve full circularity and climate neutrality by 2050. This seems far away, but to change our linear and polluting systems we need to act now, and important steps must be made in the coming years.
Panel discussion: how can festivals and cities help each other?
Together, the international Green Deal Circular Festivals and the City of Amsterdam have invited several European festivals and cities for this panel. Examples of collaboration between festivals and cities will be shared, in which festivals provide living labs for sustainable innovation and a platform to involve society and new generations in an inclusive transition. How can we learn from each other? What are the struggles in working together and how can cities and festivals engage in collaborations to accelerate change? The speakers will be announced soon, so stay tuned!

- Finding your Climate Muse presented by DJs for Climate Action
ADE Green - Eli Goldstein, Eat My Butterfly, Fay Milton, Fallon MacWilliams aka Darwin and Anetha
What is the role of music culture in climate action? In what way can artists use their creativity and voice to drive change?
The issue of climate change can be so daunting that it seems overwhelming. Maybe the only way to truly understand it is with our hearts and not our minds? Artists can play a unique role by connecting with our feelings, restoring our bond with nature and inspiring climate action. But, for artists, there are pressures that make taking action feel complicated – maybe even uncomfortable.
Today there is a growing group of DJs, producers, and musicians that are using their work and platforms to inspire and make an impact on the impending climate crisis. These artists all had the courage to take steps towards positive change and ended up deeply involved in climate action. By integrating these topics into their creative practices, or starting organizations that make a broader impact, these artists are examples of how we can all get inspired to make change.
In this panel, we will explore ways for artists to engage and speak out, as well as the challenges that come with this. Pioneers will inspire you with their stories and will give you hands-on advice on how to start your own journey.
