  • Why Communities Are The Future of The Music Industry
shesaid.so - Sam Schoonover (Coachella), others TBA
Moderator: Andreea Magdalina (shesaid.so)

The music industry is constantly being reshaped by new technologies. Since the advent of the World Wide Web, power has slowly shifted away from gatekeepers and into the hands of creators, curators and the community overall. In spite of that, the internet as we know it has also led to a bottleneck of influence & commerce in the hands of a few tech companies and the people who lead them. At the same time, more and more communities started leveraging these digital tools to connect with one another, collectively organize and reclaim the music ecosystem. Today, web3 is promising to disrupt, decentralize and provide transparency once again. This discussion aims to disseminate these trends and look at case studies that hypothesize why communities are the future of the music industry.

In addition, knowing your fans or customers will help to personalize communication, offer relevant content and unique recommendations which will increase the overall engagement. But collecting an almost unlimited amount of data raises a lot of ethical (mostly privacy related) questions. This discussion address these questions, talks about the challenges and elaborates on solutions.

The Middle East region is increasingly building its profile in dance music alongside culture and sports . While money and opportunity abound, so does controversy over human rights violations and inequality in some nations. This roundtable debate looks at the opportunities, risks and rewards of doing business in the middle east. Is a positive cultural shift really happening and if so what is our ecosystem's role in its development? Or is it simply ‘culture-washing’ being projected in order to gain acceptance on the global music stage while ‘business as usual’ continues behind the scenes? And what stance should be taken towards business in established music market regions and regimes with similar human rights challenges?

Asa Freeman (Design Engineer)

Given the fact that already very large objects can be 3D printed in metal, concrete and recyclable plastic, it is not hyperbolic to say that pretty much anything we own, drive and live in or use to cross water, will be 3D printed in the near future. But the really exciting aspect of all this is what 3D printing could do for large scale live events, stage sets, speaker housings, concert venues and bespoke experiential Metaverse sites. When anything is possible, what can we dare to expect?

Mirjam Mollema LL.M. (Partner, de Merkplaats), Kyle Hopkins (Microsoft Studios)
Moderator: Kitty Leerling (Dutchblend)

The fact that several A-Listers including Prince, Whitney Houston and James Brown have sold the right to exploit both their name and their image has been met with a mixture of surprise and, in some cases, shock. But looking at the larger picture, and taking on board the fact that we live in a society that is increasingly attached to virtual worlds, would it not in fact be handy to have your avatar earning money? What are the first steps to seeing if your name and image are saleable, and what they’re really worth? And, most importantly. whether or not you can retain some control over how those rights are used, what to do if you feel they are being abused, and who the best people are to broker such a deal.

International Disposition of IP Rights in Music and Celebrity

Music catalog sales, purchases, and collateralization are ubiquitous and varied. IP assets may be sold and purchased in whole, in part, in pieces, and for value based on many considerations. Weighing diverse factors, the transactions may be relatively simple or extremely complicated. In confirming the chain of title, which bears on the ultimate value to buying and selling parties, the due diligence processes may reveal unanticipated and costly complications. Some obstacles may be surmounted and some may kill the deal. The purchase agreement must contemplate pre-closing and post-closing contingencies, including litigation. A thorough review of international aspects of disposition requires further sophistication. This edition explores the sale, purchase, and collateralization of music catalogs for musical compositions, recordings, and related IP issues from the point of view of the various parties to the transaction. The authors provide practical edification and issue-raising guidance to these complex commercial transactions.

Short Cuts: Your Music Your Rights Your Money by Buma/Stemra
Daan Determeijer (International Membership Development, Buma/Stemra), Michiel Laan (CCO, Buma/Stemra)

Music societies sometimes tend to focus on the total revenues they make. However, at the end of the day it is not about how much music a music society makes, but the money a creative makes with this. Daan and Michiel will walk you through several examples of the money a music society as Buma/Stemra generates for different types of composers.

Followed by a symposium at 17:30 with a recap of the panels on this subject and a debate about how both new and traditional societies and organisations can continue to improve their service, make fair and equitable payments the norm, and how marginal/underground artists can finally access the income they have rightly earned through the intelligent use of transparent technologies.

  • What Can Indies Learn from Majors and Vice Versa?

Adam Griffin (Co-founder, Perfect Havoc), Gabi Kochlani (A&R VP, Speakereasy Music), Bob van Wees (Co-founder, Big Top), Bart Cools (Executive VP Global A&R and Marketing Dance Music, Warner Music Group)

Indies and majors are the essential elements of the music business. Both have their own modus operandi concerning every aspect of sourcing, signing, nurturing and marketing artists, and both hope to achieve exactly the same thing. We're led to believe that they do things differently, but given that they use the same raw materials and have the same aim, how different are they really? And how does small, agile and passionate really stack up against large, cash-rich and awash in post-grads? The truth is that they can both claim to be better at some things than others, and so, in the clear light of day, what can they learn from each other?

  • Get Paid When Your Music is Played! Let's Talk About Aslice
Zak (DVS1)

Moderator: Dave Clarke

For many decades, there hasn’t been an equitable collection system for artists who get their music played by DJs at events, whether underground sweatbox clubs or bells and whistles festivals. Many artists are naturally thrilled to be recognized and played out by their peers, but this potential exposure doesn’t feed an artist or allow future investments into the studio. Things have also been compounded by radio royalties shifting down per play as market share gets more divided, meaning much fewer earnings per play. The coronavirus pandemic has also highlighted that artists couldn’t truly live off negligible royalties while having no gigs. American DJ, producer, and label owner DVS1 took this break as an opportunity to focus on the problem of the imbalance between DJ and producer incomes and came up with a service called Aslice. By establishing a new revenue share, Aslice is rectifying this topsy turvy ecosystem to get money directly to the music makers and provide a tax-deductible way that the DJ can donate a portion of their fee across all the tracks played. We ask all about this incredible system called Aslice, what it means for the DJs that pay and the artists that finally get paid. And how this equal ecosystem will expand and bring dance music producers in line with the plays they have at events in almost real-time.
