Larry Gus
This years ADE Films program will be hosted by the Melkweg and De Balie, in co-operation with Cineville and DJBroadcast. They will present a program of assorted music documentaries. Cineville, Melkweg and DJB have selected two films about remarkable subjects. My Friend Larry Gus (GR), by director Vasilis Katsoupis, is a portrait of Greek multi-instrumentalist, singer and producer Panagiotis Melidis a.k.a. Larry Gus (‘larigas’ is Greek for larynx); the Friday screening includes a Q&A with Melidis. The second documentary is called ''808'' and it relates the story of one of dance music’s most treasured bits of studio gear, the Roland TR 808 drum machine.
Soundhunters
Cineville and De Balie present Soundhunters (Thursday & Friday), a documentary by Beryl Koltz, which traces the adventure of two new coming musicians into the world of soundhunting; the film follows their encounters with exceptional musicians (Matthew Herbert, Chassol, Matmos, Jean Michel Jarre, Blixa Bargeld or Cosmo Sheldrake) from very different backgrounds and genres.
Marc Houle live
Industrial Soundtrack For The Urban Decay is the first film to trace the origins of industrial music. Future Sound of Mzansi (Thursday & Friday) is a documentary which aims to explore, express, and interrogate South Africa's cultural landscape. Also at Melkweg, Marc Houle (CA) soundtracking live the brilliant 1926 silent movie, A Page of Madness (Kurutta ippêji), by Japanese director Teinosuke Kinugasa—a special occasion, for this groundbreaking flick is seldom screened.
RA Real Scenes
On Saturday, Resident Advisor shows a series of short documentaries on vibrant local dance scenes at Cinema Café (Thorbeckeplein 16-18): Real Scenes. Featured are Berlin, Bristol, Detroit and Paris. At De Balie, Job de Wit hosts a special ADE edition of Amsterdam’s video screening event, Fullscreen. On Sunday, Resident Advisor concludes the Real Scenes series with Mexico City, Tokyo, Johannesburg and New York.
Wild Combination
Volkshotel has a varied Playground program, which includes the screening of Wild Combination, a portrait of avant-garde musician, disco producer and composer Arthur Russell. Moreover, author Tim Lawrence will elaborate on the musical legacy of Arthur Russell. This program is co-presented by The Rest Is Noise.
