ADE Playground’s Art Route once again provides a fine selection of dance-related art exhibitions and shows, everywhere in the city centre. These three must-visit events reflect on the dialogue between visual arts and electronic music.
The 2014 edition of ADE was graced by a thrilling daytime program, boasting countless workshops, music talks, pop-up events and art exhibitions. At the Brakke Grond, fact aficionados could quiz their favorite artists during ADE MusicTalks, numerous artists gave an inspiring talk at the Sonos Studio and the Art Route took a wider look at craftsmanship and design in relation to today’s dance climate.
In 2015, the Art Route dives into these areas again, while also taking a moment to reflect on the intangible experience of music. As the program is taking shape, these three projects are surely worth visiting during this edition of ADE Playground.

1/ Mini Galerie - Uncovered: The Art Of The Album Cover II
After a thriving first edition, the Mini Galerie (Kinkerstraat 12a) presents Part II of The Art Of The Album Cover, a group exhibition showcasing artworks used for the cover design of various records. For this display, the gallery has ploughed through a cavernous collection of artwork from some of the most promising artists. Expect designs by the likes of Fachwerk, African Sciences, Falco Benz and others. Bring your ADE card for an extra of 10% discount on all Mini Galerie’s zines, prints and books.
2/ Radion - Urban Arts Festival by Urban Art NOW
One of the city’s favorite venues in the wake of Trouw, Radion (Louwesweg 1) will host the prime local event for international Street Art: Urban Art Festival Amsterdam. Celebrating its 5th anniversary, Urban Art Now presents this three-day celebration of public art. Two group shows show the works of over 40 Dutch and international high profile artists with a common denominator: designing records, flyers, VJ shows or other media for the electronic music industry.
3/ The Amsterdam Museum - Graffiti. New York meets the Dam
For the first time ever, graffiti from New York and Amsterdam are exhibited side by side. From September 18 until to January 24, the Amsterdam Museum (Kalverstraat 92) invites graffiti buffs to immerse into the story of graffiti reigned supreme in 1980s New York and influenced Dutch taggers too. Unique visual material and objects like denim jackets and black books chart the development of graffiti as a street phenomenon to an accepted artistic movement. Art by New York pioneers like Keith Haring, Lee Quiñones and Lady Pink will be exhibited, alongside never before shown works by Amsterdam heroes Shoe, Delta and Cat22.
Bonus tip: ADE Street Art Tours
Urban Art NOW and Amsterdam Museum are teaming up during ADE and offer a daily walking tour, hosted by a prominent local street artist. The tour starts with drinks and snacks at The Orginal Dampkring Gallery. Next, the tour scopes out the city center and unveils hidden artistic gems by artists like Invader, The London Police, BustArt and Alice Pasquini and participants will also visit the Amsterdam museum. These tours offer a unique way to understand the history of street art and its connection to Amsterdam, fashion and electronic music.
The tour takes place daily from 14 until 18 October and starts at 3 pm at the Original Dampkring Gallery (Singel 395). Costs: 15 euro’s (including drinks, snacks and entrance to Amsterdam Museum.)
