- Background
Let's start with your journey into the world of electronic dance music. Understanding your roots and early influences helps us connect with the artist behind the sound.
Dimitris: How did your journey into the electronic dance music (EDM) scene begin, and what were the key influences that shaped your style?
Tony Hang: My journey started way back in the 2000s, when eurodance was popular, and I stumbled upon online videos of people creating meme-style eurodance remixes using FL Studio. Curious, I got my hands on a copy of FL Studio myself. With a background in music, I was immediately blown away by the idea that I could compose and produce my own tracks. Ever since then I began exploring electronic music & music production.
While diving deeper into electronic music, I discovered Andy Blueman’s “Time to Rest”, an orchestral uplifting trance track. I was instantly captivated by its sound—and that moment marked the beginning of my journey into trance.
Having been classically trained and being a longtime lover of love songs, melody naturally became the core of my musical identity. That influence remains deeply embedded in my music to this day.
Dimitris: What personal values or life philosophies do you carry that also reflect in your music?
Tony Hang: I believe life presents us with a simple choice: to create or to destroy. I choose to create. My music is not shaped by trends, fame, or money, but by the hope that what I create might matter to someone else too.
Dimitris: Which piece of music equipment or software can you not live without, and why?
Tony Hang: There are lots of amazing gear and software, each and every single one plays its own unique role in my productions. But if I had to pick just one, it would be Synapse Audio DUNE 3. It’s my go-to bread & butter synth, and it's a synth that I’m very comfortable working with!
Dimitris: Can you share an unforgettable incident from your career—whether funny, unexpected, or challenging?
Tony Hang: Waking up in the morning to the news that a track so personally meaningful to me had been played live by my idol at a music festival was completely unexpected and unforgettable!
Moreover, a close friend of mine was in the crowd. Having heard only the draft before, he recognised the track instantly and managed to capture the moment on video. This really made it even more special!
- Current Projects:
Now that we know a bit about your background, we'd love to hear about what you're working on right now. Your current projects offer a glimpse into your creative process and artistic evolution.
Dimitris: Could you please elaborate on the inspiration behind the track Secret Haven out now as part of the Future Sound EP Vol.27 via Future Sound of Egypt, that is the subject of this interview? How does it align with your current artistic aspirations?
Tony Hang: When I first wrote the main melody of my track Secret Haven, it gave me goosebumps - I instantly knew I had to finish it. The melody naturally reflected what I was feeling inside: my wish to dedicate it to my wedding, which was only a few months away. I subsequently named it after the venue where our wedding took place. Looking back, it has become one of the most meaningful tracks I’ve ever made.
For this track, I also adopted a different sonic approach. Around that time, I was developing a deeper appreciation for ambient music, and the pads I used reflect that influence, adding an atmospheric and emotional layer - something I had never explored in my previous works. In this way, Secret Haven became both a personal expression and a creative experiment, pushing me to expand my sound.
My current artistic aspiration is to break away from the mould and create something unique, while still retaining the trance sound that originally inspired me. To me, this track represents the first step toward that vision, combining emotional storytelling with a new sonic approach.
Dimitris: Have you produced any new tracks since the one we're discussing in this interview? If so, could you share the inspiration behind them?
Tony Hang: Yes, I made a remix of my good friend Rob-Z’s track Daybreak, his debut solo release on Redux Recordings.
While many of my past releases focused heavily on supersaw-driven melodies, I wanted to challenge myself with this remix by working predominantly with plucks and reshaping the track into a more melancholic interpretation of the original. This project was also my first full production after recently switching DAWs from FL Studio to Bitwig, which made the process both challenging and rewarding.
I’m really happy with how it turned out, and the remix is out now on Redux Re-energized!
Dimitris: What are some of the challenges you face when producing music, and how do you overcome them?
Tony Hang: Writer’s block is definitely real. Not every day brings a significant life experience that inspires the creation of a piece of music. I don’t really have a formula for overcoming it, but when it strikes, I tend to shift my focus toward something more technical - perhaps diving into YouTube to learn new production techniques, or simply being playful in the studio and jamming without expectations. This way I'm building up my skills instead of sitting idle not knowing what to write. Who knows? Sometimes that’s exactly when the next spark of inspiration appears.
- Future Plans:
Dimitris: What are your future plans in terms of new releases, collaborations, or live performances?
Tony Hang: Right now, I’m just experimenting in the studio, working towards refining my sound everyday. I tend to let my productions take their own course, but my guiding philosophy is simple: always try to be better than I was yesterday.
- Music Industry & Technology:
The music industry is constantly evolving, influenced by technology and cultural shifts. Let's dive into your thoughts on these changes and how they impact your work.
Dimitris: How do you see the current state of the electronic music industry, and what changes would you like to see?
Tony Hang: I think today’s scene is often heavily influenced by popularity and social media hype. That said, there’s still a space for listeners who value craft and emotion, and my hope is that more people reconnect with music on that deeper level, appreciating it for its artistic value rather than just the buzz.
Dimitris: What role do you think AI technology plays in the future of electronic music production, and have you experimented with it?
Tony Hang: I’ve experimented with generating sounds using AI, though I haven’t incorporated any into my productions so far. I personally think AI can be a double edged sword to music producers. On one hand, it can be a great production tool, it can be a fast and affordable way to generate sounds, or even to get quick masters for testing out tracks. On the other hand, AI-generated music is definitely diluting the pool of music, making it harder for genuine artists to stand out.
That said, I believe this moment makes it more important than ever for artists to focus on what machines can’t replicate: personal connection, intention, and the human touch in music.
Dimitris: How important do you find online tutorials and classes for aspiring producers, and do you engage in any form of music education yourself?
Tony Hang: Online classes and tutorials are extremely important in my early days or producing, and I find it an excellent way to easily connect with big artists and learn from the very best! I took lessons from various courses on Sonic Academy, and had the opportunity to learn from world-class producers like Sean Tyas, Allan Morrow and Temple One. Most of these lessons took place online & I owe much of my growth to them. In music production, learning never stops, and for me, that’s still the case today - there are so many excellent tutorials on YouTube as well!
I also teach basic music production and use predominantly an online format too, making it easy for students to access classes from anywhere without the need to commute.
- Personal Insights:
To wrap things up, we'd love to get a glimpse into your personal life and philosophy. These insights help us understand the person behind the music.
Dimitris: How do you maintain a balance between your personal life and your music career?
Tony Hang: Music production is just my hobby, albeit a very serious one, so I do dedicate time towards doing it! When I'm finished with my day job & my personal commitments, music becomes my release, my escape. That's how I maintain balance.
Dimitris: What advice would you give to aspiring DJs and producers looking to make their mark in the industry?
Tony Hang: I wouldn’t say I’ve “made it” in the industry, but observing those who have, I’ve realized that humility is key for anyone who wants to make a lasting impact. Success is not just about achievements, but about staying open to learning, nurturing others, and remembering that we are all part of something bigger than ourselves.
