Drum N' Bass Review: SØNIN & BLR feat Brieanna Grace - Rush (Changing Faces Remix) out on Anjunabeats

Changing Faces, aka Oliver Vasko, makes his debut on Anjunabeats with a fresh drum & bass rework of ‘Rush’ by SØNIN and BLR, featuring vocals from Brieanna Grace.

With over a decade of production experience with some of dance music's biggest names, SØNIN is no stranger to breaking into the charts, with previous tracks ‘Passion’ and ‘Nano’ securing #1 in the Beatport Top 100 Trance charts. His releases have gained support from trance legends such as Armin van Buuren, Jason Ross, Ferry Corsten, W&W and many more. Having recently played Fabric, London as well as multiple US shows on the Anjunabeats After Dark Tour at the end of last year, SØNIN returned to Anjunabeats with a three-way collaboration with ‘Rush’.

BLR, aka Leon Bolier, has worked alongside some of the best in the industry, including Tiesto & John Summit. “‘Rush’ came to be when Anton (SØNIN) sent me an idea he was working on and I got introduced to Brieanna" says BLR. "I forwarded the instrumental idea to Brieanna to work on and the resulting demo was SO good I asked Anton if I could implement my own ideas to this and make this a collab."

Before release, ‘Rush’ had already seen extensive support, being debuted by Above & Beyond at Group Therapy 600 in Mexico City to 14,000 people. Being only one of only two non-Above & Beyond ID's from the vaunted performance, the track was a standout moment in the set. Since its release, the track has amassed over 500,000 streams and gained support from top tier acts such as David Guetta and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, just to name a few.

Slovak DJ and producer, Changing Faces has made a growing name for himself in DnB with his production, live shows as well as his work with brands like Allstars and UKF. His recent release, ‘Worlds Apart’, featured notable vocalist Cameron Hayes, who fans might recognise from her previous hit collaborations with Dimension and Wilkinson. With this latest release, Changing Faces continues his rapid growth with his first release on Anjunabeats, offering a new take on a trance main floor banger.

[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Drum N'Bass is experiencing a remarkable resurgence, and the anthem "Rush" by SØNIN & BLR featuring Brieanna Grace has found a dynamic new dimension through the masterful remix by Changing Faces. This version is not just a remix—it's a meticulously crafted sonic journey that elevates the original's core elements while infusing it with relentless energy and precision. From a technical standpoint, Changing Faces demonstrates exceptional prowess in sound design and arrangement. The remix opens with a finely layered atmospheric intro, employing subtle pads and reverb-drenched textures that create a sense of anticipation. The transition into the drop is seamless, utilizing a strategic combination of risers, white noise sweeps, and meticulously timed drum fills that build tension effectively. The drum programming is particularly noteworthy, featuring tightly compressed snares with sharp transients that cut through the mix, supported by rolling, syncopated hi-hats that maintain rhythmic momentum. The kick drum is punchy, sitting perfectly in the low-end spectrum without overpowering the sub-bass, which is rich, warm, and glides smoothly to add depth and movement. Changing Faces skillfully manipulates the vocal stems of Brieanna Grace, applying dynamic EQ, spatial reverb, and slight pitch modulation to ensure the vocals remain front and center without clashing with the dense instrumentation. The use of sidechain compression is evident, allowing the kick to breathe within the mix while maintaining the track’s overall sonic density. The remix’s arrangement supports its cinematic appeal, with well-placed breakdowns that offer a contrast to the high-energy sections. These breakdowns utilize minimalistic elements, such as isolated vocals and ambient synth layers, to create emotional peaks and valleys, enhancing the track’s anthemic quality. In terms of mixing and mastering, the track boasts a crisp, polished finish. The stereo imaging is expansive, with wide panned synths and percussion elements creating a three-dimensional soundscape. The mastering process has achieved a loudness that’s competitive yet dynamic, preserving the track’s intricate details and avoiding the pitfalls of over-compression. Overall, Changing Faces’ remix of "Rush" is a testament to expert production techniques and creative artistry. Its unstoppable drum n' bass energy, combined with cinematic flair and high-class execution, makes it not only a club banger but also a track that could seamlessly fit into a TV series or film soundtrack. #PureGold indeed.
