MAAC (Music Against Animal Cruelty)  is a non profit organization with one simple directive: to aid in wildlife conservation. MAAC is a vehicle conceived by Jonny White of Art Department fame and long time friend and founder of Pulse Radio, Wade Cawood in collaboration with Tears for Tigers founder Jack Baucher to act as a broker between musicians, music industry and music fans alike, and organizations who are working on initiatives to save various animals facing the dangers of a diminishing population and/or extinction.

MISSION STATEMENT

Wildlife conservation is an issue near and dear to our hearts. We have come to realize that there is an often overlooked opportunity for artists and fans who are passionate about this issue to make a difference. Our plan is to galvanize the support of the music industry—a worldwide collective of likeminded individuals who together can make a significant difference.

Ultimately MAAC's objectives will extend to curating large scale events with the intention of raising substantial funds, allowing us to curate our own initiatives. In the interim we will be working as a "fund" to which anyone can contribute. We in turn will select various "grassroots" initiatives as beneficiaries. Whether it be to save lesser known animals who desperately need our help like the Wild Dog, or to enable Rangers to educate land-owners and farmers as to how they can safely utilize their land to produce crops or livestock without harming local wildlife, our mission is to help.

Some startling statistics:
- Every 20 minutes, the world adds another 3,500 human lives but loses one or more entire species of animal or plant life - at least 27,000 species per year.

- Every 15 mins an elephant is poached for its ivory.

- At the present rates of extinction, as many as 20% of the world's 7-15 million species could be gone in the next 30 years. This rate of extinction has been unprecedented since the disappearance of dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

- The Black Rhino population is down 97.6% since 1960.

- Listed as one of the world’s most endangered canids, and the most endangered predator in Africa, there are now only between 4,000-5,000 African wild dogs in the wild.

- The African lions' numbers are diminishing rapidly due to habitat destruction, persecution by livestock farmers outside of protected areas, and human greed. 10,000-15,000 free-roaming African lions remain, down from 50,000 a decade ago.

- Poachers are responsible for the death of a staggering 35,000 African Elephants in 2014 alone.

Social Experiment is a non-profit record label. 100% of net proceeds from sales of this record will go towards conserving wildlife in Africa.

At International Music Summit (IMS) it’s no secret that the use of social media platforms is key to promoting yourself as an artist. On Thursday 25th of May at IMS Ibiza, Glenn Miller (Facebook, Entertainment Partnerships EMEA, USA), Patrick Walker (Facebook, Director of Media Partnerships EMEA, UK) and Scott McKenna (Facebook, Entertainment Partner Services EMEA, UK) provided a panel on how to create an engaging and invaluable cross-platform strategy for your fan base via Facebook and Instagram.
“With Live, you want to know what’s happening next.” Glenn Miller
There’s numerous examples of the rise and power of using Facebook for an artist. A recent example that caught the world’s attention was the launch of the first Facebook bot with DJ/producer Hardwell. The bot had a staggering 60,000 users within the first two weeks, 1 million total interactions and an 6000% increase in fan conversations.

Launched in 2015, Facebook live provides a platform for an artist to tell their story and create a moment from anywhere in the world. There’s no hiding when you’re live, you’re authentic and there’s a social connection that your target audience will relate to. It’s key that as an artist, you stay completely up-to date with all the features that a social media channel will offer. With Facebook live, you can now schedule your announcements to take place in advance giving you that extra time to make your content more engaging.

Facebook is constantly evolving to meet the needs of the modern touring artist. The ‘tour creation’ feature allows you to add and collate all of your events and mark them as one tour rather than a string of individual shows. Furthermore, this feature tailors to each fans location only show tour dates in and around their region.

The recent boom of Instagram users has made the platform a tool that artists should utilize. With now over 700 million people using Instagram each month, the Instagram stories feature is a great way to provide short video clips to give insight into your life as an artist.

Videos like back stage at show may seem tiring to post for an artist but this type of content is the most interesting to your fans.

Going on to share experiences about his multi-decade career and memories from recording one of the finest albums of 1989, Technique, on the island of Ibiza during a time when dance music was taking Balearic beat to a whole new dimension.
“Breaks my heart, pointless act of brutality in my home city just gut wrenching, heart breaking, completely barbaric and pointless.” Bernard Sumner.
During the talk moderated by BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong MBE, Bernard emotionally spoke about the recent happenings in his home town this after band mate Peter Hook’s daughter was at the concert consequently marked as safe where the tragedy happened.

During the talk, Bernard shared his influential Ibizan experiences of attending early super clubs Amnesia and Es Paradis, saying “It sounded like different styles of music all mashed together”, inspiring their sound resulting in the production sound of his early work ‘Fine Time’.

New Order are soon set to perform at The Manchester Festival, a music and arts festival that takes place around the city at the end of June where they will be performing 5 special shows.

He continued, stating that the band will play 90% songs that they don’t normally play live which have been carefully re scored to be performed with a SYNTHESISED orchestra, all illustrating he is still clearly passionate about electronic music.

On Friday 26th of May at IMS, Jesse Rose spoke of his time in the music industry and why he feels it’s time to stop DJing. Interviewed by B.Traits (BBC Radio 1), Jesse outlined his career through the music industry and how a year ago he felt he wouldn’t stop DJing.
‘I’m not leaving dance music, everything that I’ve learnt on the way I want to bring back into it. It felt like a good time to retire from DJing every week’
Speaking about the difficulties of getting noticed a producer, Jesse explains how releasing your music on vinyl was key to building a fan base and getting people invested in your music.

‘When I started, you had to release a record and it had to be played on vinyl. You had to find a label to invest in pressing up that record which was a difficult thing to do’

A key topic throughout this year’s IMS has been how artists can stay healthy on the road. Jesse shared his experience and knowledge outlining that as an industry, many young artists are unaware of the health risks of constantly touring and partying.
“With DJ-ing you have to give 100 percent all the time”
He continued to discuss his career highlights such as gaining a residency at Berlin’s Panorama Bar and whilst he hasn’t revealed any definitive plans for the future, it seems as though he’ll be staying within the electronic music industry.

“‘If you’re making good music and you have the right team then you will make money, the question is, how long will you make money for?’” – James Beyersdorf

On Friday 26th of May at International Music Summit (IMS) Ibiza, James Beyersdorf (Financial Sherpa Inc, Founder and President, USA) provided the conference with a guide to managing your finances and assets as an artist. How do you monetize yourself and retain those revenues? Speaking on this point, James highlights his experiences of working with both creatively focused individuals and those who are more business orientated.
‘When I started working with creatives it was difficult, they want to provide joy, music and make something…’
Speaking about the importance of building a strong team of people around you such as accountants and financial planners, there are individuals available who are fundamental to creatives. The business mind is about how to monetize creativity.

‘Have the right team. The team is absolutely paramount’
Outlining a process of maintaining financial longevity, James describes that it’s key to look to the future so you that when you’re no longer top of the charts, you have investments to keep you going. When you’re spending money on things that don’t really benefit you, these items will eventually run out.
“When you stop creating music, those investments will continue to let you have that lifestyle”
For musicians, your career is the active asset. Team structure and learn how to build and reserve your money so that you can make art for art’s sake, not because you just have to make money.
