Over 6 years, and now close to 30 track outings, Russell G’s been keeping club floors on their toes with his own inimitable synthesis of trance & progressive house.
He’s released on, and remixed for many of the scene’s leading imprints - Spinnin’, Black Hole Recordings, Armada, In Charge and UltraViolet to tag but a handful. ‘Café Del Mar’, ‘Mantra’, ‘Shimmer’ and most recently (alongside regular VANDIT Bandit Paul Thomas!) ‘Fiji’ have each made significant impacts on Beatport’s trance chart throughout 2014 and early 2015.
This February, with the aerodynamic trance of ‘Skala’, Russell likewise becomes a member of the VANDIT artist family.
Frontend ‘Skala’ musters punch-packing midrange power with its daisycutting drums, tight-as-you-like perc loops, floor-engaging sub-riffs and breathless female harmonics. A cliff dive into the break’s aquiline melodic chords and ‘Skala’ promptly crosses the euphoric Rubicon, with a surging, devastating third act that’ll rattle club rafters from Birmingham to Brisbane!
Giving it a big 8/10 thumbs-up, in their March edition DJ Mag says “Skala’ holds a lot back in its intro”, but “when the riff strikes, it does so with considerably more force than expected, which on the floor comes as the happiest of surprises!”
‘Skala’s out now and available from all good download stores.
More about Russell G: it’s little wonder that Russell G has featured at many a renowned venue around the world, playing the likes of Godskitchen, Global Gathering and Sander Van Doorn’s ‘Dusk Til Doorn’ parties, all of whom have entrusted Russell to drop his uplifting and energetic sound on audiences.
Russell’s big breakthrough came from the mighty Godskitchen where he made his debut at their Global Gathering festival on their flagship Boombox stage alongside Armin van Buuren, Eric Prydz & Sasha.
It’s not just Russell’s DJing that has seen him earn acclaim. He’s the man behind many an underground anthem, with his eclectic, adaptable style seeing the West Midlander release his studio wares on a wide range of labels. ‘The Real Life’ on Spinnin, ‘3AM’ & ‘Solstice’ on Armada, ‘Free For All’, ‘Rush’ & Russell’s collab with Marco V ‘Kalevala’ on Marco’s own In Charge imprint have all brought Beatport chart success.
Last year saw Russell revisit his very early musical influences, resulting in his music developing a trancier edge with great success. His cover of ‘Cafe Del Mar’ reached #4 in the Beatport Trance Top 100 chart, whilst tracks like ‘Mantra’ & ‘Shimmer’ also charted highly. Russell’s music has enjoyed significant support of late from artists including Paul van Dyk, Gareth Emery, Max Graham, Ferry Corsten & Lange to name but a few.
Dimitri Kechagias review: VANDIT records motto that there is no Art without Artists is manifested in the case of Russell G. The top artist from Birmingham in UK with frequent appearances at the biggest club nights and with his right on the spot productions manage to build his loyal dedicated following that appreciate every single sound layer of his unique sound. His track Skala is a magnificent composition that will win the attention and support of many trance supporters worldwide. He applies his chunky prog house infused groove along with driving pulsating basslines, heavenly female voices in the background and wide variety of synthy plucks and emotional strings that add warmth while the aggressive electrified synthy hook adds energy and tension to the proceedings. The floating journey carry our soul away to distant places and very soon we land on the long breakdown. He starts with trancy voices, ambient melodies, percussion themes and very soon he reveals the euphoric colourful synthy riffs that will explode out of proportions and build the tension for the climax. His drop is euphoric, feel good, hands in the air and melodic to the maximum with the main synthy stabs doing the damage. Shorter breakdown is used to calm things down and lead the track to its conclusion on the same way as it started. Skala is a wonderful modern futuristic neo trancer that does its job perfectly! You don't expect nothing less on VANDIT records. #PureGold Love It
