BEST OF 2014: Interview with the dj & producer Phase Difference from Piraeus / Greece

If asked what Greek Producer, Phase Difference, would put in a biography to describe himself, he would semi-jokingly say, ‘I’m in the studio, too busy to write a bio’ and busy he has been indeed.

2009 was the year he started toying with electronic music. Through a process of trial and error, his passion for creation grew. Phase Difference’s productions are distinct and exude this personality, radical and groovy, heavy hitting dance floor bombs.

Influenced from a diverse roster of artists ranging from Deadmau5 to Richie Hawtin, he has established a reputable name for himself in the industry. Through Originals and Remixes, his tracks have charted numerous times on Beatport and have been signed to a multitude of labels such as 1605, Bosphorus Underground Recordings, AAAAH Records, Human Garden Music and Rabies Records, just to name a few.

Who knows what tricks Phase Difference has up his sleeves as his career in music unfolds but one thing is for certain, he delivers a driving product every time.

“It’s music, why so serious?”

Name: Panagiotis Grammenos aka
Location: Piraeus / Greece

Dimitri:  Can you mention your biggest achievements in your music career in 2014 and your personal life if it is something that you wish to share with our readers?

Phase Difference:  Hello Dimitris and thank you for this Interview. 2014 was a year full of work and changes for me. I’ve been making plans for the upcoming year and I’ve been working on many new projects. The biggest achievement of this year for me was being part of Saturate Audio’s compilation, Immersed, and of course when Armin Van Buuren played at ASOT  Andre Sobota’s Remix of Flatland by FACEPALM (which is our project with Christopher Vassilakis).

Dimitri:  2014 was packed with releases from so many different styles, which Electronic Music style you believe is the absolute Electronic Music Style Of 2014 in the mainstream indifferent if you like it or not. Why you believe this style became so successful in 2014?

Phase Difference:  I believe that this year Big Room House was the main attraction. I’m not a big fan of the genre, although I really like “crossovers” between genres, but this one doesn’t really work for me.  I believe that this genre became so popular due to the constant promotion, it’s very hard to find an “EDM” track that will become, what we call, classic.

1) Best Track:
Phase Difference:  deadmau5 – Avaritia, this track is just perfect.

2) Best Artist (Dj & producer):
Phase Difference:  Deadmau5 for sure, he knows how to produce and he knows how to troll people (Ultra 2014).

3) Best Remix:
Phase Difference:  With 100% confidence I’d say Danilo Ercole - Little Planet (Christopher Vassilakis Remix)

4) Best Remixer:
Phase Difference:  Andre Sobota I really loved the remix he did on our FACEPALM tune and his productions are really solid!

5) Best New Talent (Dj or producer):
Phase Difference:  I can’t really say, this year felt too calm, with no real surprises.

6) Best Electronic Music Album:
Phase Difference:  Deadmau5’s While

7) Best Electronic Music Compilation:
Phase Difference:   Immersed was this year’s Highlight.

8) Best artwork/cover of an Album or Compilation:
Phase Difference:   And again I vote for Saturate’s Immersed. I really love the Look and Feel of the label. Solid and clear like its sound.

9) Best Electronic Music Label:
Phase Difference:   La Valigetta is one of my favorites this year. Their House and Nu Disco sounds are just brilliant!

10) Best Electronic Music Video:
Phase Difference:  The Magician - Sunlight feat. Years & Years (Official Video) I love the video, it just feels so random and I also LOVE the music.

11) Best online Funny video related to Dance Music:
Phase Difference:  When Will The Bass Drop, it’s just smart and funny.

12) Best Online Social media network:
Phase Difference:  Soundcloud for sure.

13) Best music composition software:
Phase Difference:  Ableton Live and my voice, I sample a lot of my voice and humming. So, I had to mention it, give it some credit.

14) Best Radio show:
Phase Difference:  Mason Bach’s Modern Agenda, I’m into techno and this guy knows How to Techno.

15) Best Radio station:
 Phase Difference:  DI.fm

16) Best Online Record shop that you purchase your music:
Phase Difference:  Beatport

17) Best Smart phone/Mobile phone device:
Phase Difference:  Nexus 5 is the best smartphone for me because it offers value for money, plus its screen is incredible and very clear.

18) Best tip that you learnt this year for your Djing techniques or music composition:
Phase Difference:  Mixing is the key to the perfect mastering. If your mixing is good then you’ll get a loud and clear tune with perfect balance.

19) Best hobby or activity that you spent a lot of time in 2014:
Phase Difference:  Sketching and drawing was the second main thing I’ve been doing all this year since I really like arts in general and not just music. Sketching is the way to move to the next level as a graphic designer, since I do all the graphical work for Phase Difference, FACEPALM and DRKSLSH.

20) Best online/PC/video game of the year that you have played this year?
Phase Difference:  Grand Theft Auto 5 is my top game for 2014. Amazing plot, great gameplay and of course the graphics pushed this gen’s consoles to the limit. I can’t wait to grab it for next gen.

Dimitri: Finally, 2015 is ahead of us would you like to tell your plans with your future releases, tracks, albums, collaborations, Dj gigs.

Phase Difference:  2015 is going to be a year full of hard work and it has to be organized and well planned. I started a brand new project under the alias of DRKSLSH which is going to be my “dark side” and I’ll focus on Techno and of course every other “dark-sounding” genre. I decided to do that separation because I realized that my Progressive side is completely different from my Techno side. It was confusing for me to keep making Techno orientated music and Progressive under the same alias. So this is one big change for me, but also this year you’re going to see more collaborations from me as Phase Difference and of course as DRKSLSH!

Thanks very much to Phase Difference for replying  in this interview

Thanks very much to Basil O Glue from Saturate Audio for organizing this interview
