COMPILATION REVIEW: In Trance We Trust vol.20 mixed by Menno de Jong, Mike Saint Jules, Sneijder

With of one of the richest label histories in electronic music – stretching back over an astonishing 600+ single releases and 19 mix-comps, its credo is enshrined in its name. In Trance We Trust’s list of former compilation mixers includes hall-of-famers and revered underground legends alike - Bobina, Johan Gielen, Misja Helsloot, Cor Fijneman and Mark Norman to name but a handful. Its singles discography reads more like an A to Z encyclopaedia of trance music’s producers and remixers.

On May 26th In Trance We Trust will release their extraordinary twentieth mix-comp. Commemorating this landmark is a job too formidable for any one DJ… So they’ve hired 3!

In a first for the series an In Trance We Trust compilation will field a disc trilogy, mixed by a troika of the scene’s most steadfast trance quartermasters. Collectively, Menno de Jong, Mike Saint-Jules & Sneijder have built 3 mixes that serve all-out justice to ITWT’s long established compilation history.

In terms of the music itself, well we could tell you much about ‘ITWT 020’s swirling, engrossing prog atmospheres; its affecting pad & chord soaked drops, the emotive pull of its vocals or its synthesized sky-scrape peaks. After so many releases though, you know all that! So let’s cut the ‘pacifics’ and get with the specifics! You want to know names, names, NAMES! Making the ITWT grade, you’ll find music from artists including Richard Durand, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Aly & Fila, Arctic Moon, John Askew, Arnej, Adam Nickey, Arctic Moon, Dart Rayne & Yura Moonlight, Eco, C-Systems, Virtual Vault, Activa, Adam Ellis, Temple One, Ali Wilson, Tangle and Bryan Kearney as well as (natch!) plenty from Menno, Mike & Sneijder!

Containing close to 60 tracks, it brings the label’s very latest and its up-and-coming greatest to the mix. Also included are new rebuilds of some of its earliest classic releases, with fast rising studio souls like Fady & Mina and Kinetica mixing tactical on tracks like Andain’s ‘Beautiful Things’ and Kamaya Painters legendary ‘Endless Wave’.

Last year’s Comeback Kid, Menno de Jong has returned from his timeout with many an electronic battle weapon stashed. Most recently ‘Creatures of the Night’ has floored club floors and his ITWT mix also includes new Menno-manna like ‘Connected’, ‘Any Other Day’ & the Adam Ellis collab ‘Solicitude’. Dig a bit deeper and you’re also going to find roaring audio from scene heads like Aly & Fila (with the Sue McLaren sung ‘Where To Now’), Adam Nickey sensational ‘Perfect Destiny’ and Luke Bond feat. Roxanne Emery’s chart topping ‘On Fire’.

Mike Saint-Jules is the big man whose instrumentals have been instrumental in turning his native New Yorkers on to trance. As a producer Mike’s ITWT history is estimable. Just last month his ‘The Final Frontier’ track, which features in the mix, drew impressive 9.0 and 8.5 scores from the MIXMAG & DJ Mag judges. It also includes his forthcoming ‘Space Renegade’ and ‘Broken Turn’ tracks, as well as Richard Durand’s ‘Morning Light’, Arnej ‘The Burrow’, C-Systems ‘Aeneas’ and 13 more floor flambés besides!

Alongside regular club & studio compadre Bryan Kearney, Sneijder is at the forefront of Ireland’s trance nu-skool. His ITWT mix includes the pair’s new co-pro ‘Next Level’ and Sneijder’s own current club smacker ‘Remember Me’. There’s also plenty of the man’s remix action too. Flowing through the mix’s arteries are his reworks of Ben Gold’s ‘Fall With Me’, Aly & Fila’s ‘Speed Of Sound’ and Giuseppe Ottaviani & Marc van Linden ‘Until Monday’ + hot new sonics from Tangle, ReOrder, Will Atkinson & others.

Dimitri Kechagias review of the dj sampler 1: In Trance We Trance is considered as one of the most influential and inspiring trance labels that actually manage to open the path and build the foundation of what we term nowadays as trance music. The 20th anniversary compilation is celebrated in 3CD's packed with magnificent tunes and many exclusives. Some of them are presented in the form of dj samplers in their full glory for fellow djs to play in their dj sets. Firstly is the top dj & producer Johan Ekman from Sweden who delivers the fantastic Rocking. The name of the track describes well its content. Its a rocking hybrid of tech trance with uplifting elements merged perfectly in the shape of an explosive trance tornado that runs with the speed of light with techy driving bassline, aggressive psy trance kick, acid overtones and emotional melodic layers. The breakdown starts really emotional with opera vocals and the huge euphoric synthy lead that is classic to the bone. The climax is full on tough hard uplifting trance at its very best. It's one of those tracks that is super hard for clubbers to deny its impact and tremendous influence on the dancefloor. Johan Ekman never fails to deliver and he rocks it super hard once again. Two trance legends  Eco & Mike Saint-Jules collaborate for the explosive anthem Azure. You can expect magnificent composition that brings under the same roof the production skills of both talents who give us a wonderful big room meets tech trance banger. It starts all dark and moody but slowly some cool emotional synths are added. Suddenly the track stops without any warning and the piano melody comes in that sounds really retro like coming from an old vinyl. Slowly the main euphoric synthy hook appears and explodes out of proportion. The build up towards the climax teases the listener and increases excitement. The tough aggressive groove and punchy sharp bassline return in true tech trance style with clever cuts and chops that keep the interest of the listener. The epic euphoric synthy hook returns for the final section and elevates the listener to a higher level before finishing off in bass focused mode.

Dimitri Kechagias review of the dj sampler 2: The second dj friendly sampler with extended versions of the tracks included in this top compilation includes 3 fantastic productions that will blow your mind without second thought. Mike Saint-Jules is represented with his big room / proglifting trancer Space Renegade. Mike is true magician in his studio and here composes the straight forward big room meets uplifting trancer with solid cranking groove, powerful punchy driving basslines and most importantly very strong epic and truly anthemic synthy riff that is combined perfectly with the sci-fi style spoken vocal sample. The climax is like thunderbolt that hits the ground and brings mayhem and excitement on any dancefloor that this summer Space Renegade will be played with success. Next is Naian vs. Seventh Meridian  with the fantastic Patriot. Bubbly basslines, bouncy punchy kicks  and very cinematic main synthy theme that will recall certainly trance classics from the past. Wonderful soundscapes in the breakdown with piano melody that is so heartfelt and deep that will easily crawl under your skin and touch your sensitive chords. The climax  is floating and dreamy perfect to hypnotise the listener and take him on board for an unforgettable journey. The beloved Polish talent  Arctic Moon  delivers his full on uplifting meets hard trance style Starlight In The Dark. Rough bouncy techy groove, metallic solid kicks and driving energetic basslines while on top acid layers are added to keep it dirty and underground. The breakdown is long and atmospheric with ethnic style vocals, classical orchestral music themes and fantastic epic style synths that elevate your senses to a higher level of consciousness. The climax is pure hands in the air feel good energetic trancer perfect to jump as high as we can with hands raised in the sky and smile all over our faces!

Dimitri Kechagias review of the dj sampler 3: On the sampler part 3 included 3 very strong tracks from the compilation. John Newall comes with his nearly 9 minutes epic uplifting trance banger Grand Central. John never disappoints and this track is not an exception. Energetic pumping bouncy grooves, driving full on basslines, uplifting euphoric synths, chord progression that raise the hair from your back and exceptional breakdown with ethereal heavenly female vocals, cinematic dreamy soundscapes and massive hands in the air synths that lead us on the straight to the point uplifting trance section that John knows so well to arrange and keep thousands of clubbers jump as high as they can! Gal Abutbul & Tim Briggs connect and produce the exceptional full on uplifting trance banger Revert. We deal here with a magical track with tough groove and driving basslines while on top melancholic piano melodies, sweet chopped heavenly female vocals and euphoric colourful synths are added to build the very rich sound that you invited to taste. The breakdown is truly stunning with very sensitive heartfelt melodies, female voices and like fairytale atmosphere. The uplifting climax is pure, straight to the point and absolutely mindblowing! Real beauty that's for sure that will be considered as classic for many years to come. Last but not least the everlasting eternal classic Endless Wave by Kamaya Painters is remixed wonderfully by Kinetica. This new version respects the spiritual vibe of the original by updating it with tougher pounding basslines, heavy metallic kicks, chord progression, synthy plucks and heavenly voices. The breakdown is truly large with piano melodies, heavenly voices, airy pads and the well known classic synthy riff that lead the track to its full on hands in the air euphoric climax that is definitely the appropriate pay off for those who expect something really good on the high standards of the original! If you like uplifting or big room tech trance this compilation represents all the shades and vibrant colours of trance music! #PureGold Love iT
