REVIEW: Croquet Club - Awake / Cardigan out on Anjunadeep

Influenced by everything from Bonobo, Sufjan Stevens and Cinematic Orchestra to classical, jazz and the mercurial Brian Eno, French artist Jeremy Villecourt aka Croquet Club distills his many musical loves into a beautiful double dose of deeply musical electronica for Anjunadeep.

Blending elements of ambient electronica, indie and dreamy deep house into aswirling sonic journey, "Awake" is a brilliant debut from the French maestro. With gentle bass grooves, uplifting guitar plucks, lulling keys and hypnotic vocals, "Awake" is a blissed-out gem that has already picked up radio play from Nemone on BBC 6 Music.

Completing an impressive debut is the gentle, cascading pianos and washing electronic waves of "Cardigan". The opening track from the recent "Anjunadeep 05" album, "Cardigan" has already proved a cult favourite amongst the Anjunadeep fanbase, as well as earning BBC Radio 1 support from Zane Lowe.

The EP also represents an extended purple patch for the Anjunadeep label, having recently released the brilliant "Mr Man" by Dusky, hit #1 on Hype Machine with "Be Mine" by Lane 8 and topped the iTunes Dance Album charts with "Anjunadeep 05".

Dimitri Kechagias review: Fantastic new release on Anjunadeep perfectly released at the last days of the summer cause simply brings to your mind pleasant moments and I guess that the most recent memories you keep in your mind are from your relaxing summer holidays. Croquet Club is another great artist that is going to widen the appeal of Anjunadeep with the awesome tracks Awake & Cardigan. The label that loves electronic dance music in its all varieties, substyles, forms and shapes introduce this new fantastic talent that will be great to get a full album from him. Awake starts with jazzy piano, vocal samples, nice synthy melodies and introduces the playful tech house beats, great percussion with that analogue feel. We all embrace new music technology and the way that has helped the music tracks to sound so perfect but we definitely miss that analogue instruments feel that comes nicely on Awake. You can call it deep house/loungy/electronica and you can describe it as a very pleasurable experience that pushes the boundaries and educate the younger generations by pointing out that there are other great forms of music you can hear and get pleasure out from them. I just wish to be longer but always the good things last for just few precious moments and then gone. Cardigan is equally mesmerizing sonic experience with cinematic intro with piano, synths and chunky techy beats that drive the track forward. The sea waves sound so perfectly in tune with that incredible rhythm that you simply want to start whistling or dancing in your bedroom, car or lounge party. Anjunadeep raises the standards once again and sets the foundations for an amazing future. Pure JOY! Love IT
