Trance Review: Johan Gielen - Ready For The Jump out on Black Hole Recordings

Moving on from the relative chill of his winter-magnificent ‘Etherflow’ LP, Johan Gielen temporarily detaches from the Airscape mothership, to flip the stylistic polarity and put out something as contrasting as they come.

Ready For The Jump !?

Talking about ‘Ready For The Jump’s origins, Johan says: “I was digging through old vinyl crates and came across this raw, hypnotic record from 1992, which instantly took me back. Yet, there was a hook in there that just felt timeless, so I built around it, pushing it into a much heavier, rawer and more modern club sound.

‘Ready For The Jump’ became about bridging eras—taking something in danger of finally being forgotten and giving it new energy for today’s dancefloors. It’s also served as reminder to myself that I’m not limited to one lane; this track goes beyond that and into something bigger. I’ve been playing it for six months now and every time that sample hits, you can feel as well as see the reaction in a club. People might not know why, but they feel it, and that’s when you know you’ve captured something special!”
That sample specifically is a chunky old chunk of the stone-cold hardcore classic ‘Total Confusion’ by A Homeboy, A Hippie & A Funky Dred. Casper Pound’s culturally harmonising trio brought their three styles to one boundary-dissolving track, where musical forms and social divisions were being rewritten on the dancefloor.

In his back-to-the-future reimagining, Johan has fully tapped into the original’s chaos theory, to deliver an absolute unit of a track! The dutchman skimps not on ‘Total Confusion’s whooping Zulu Nation chants and “renegade” shouts. Nor the militant rhymes of Chuck D, or, contrastingly, Roy Ayers’s earthy, soulful and unhurried tones. ‘Ready For The Jump’ reinforces that further with thrashing rave stabs, hardcore riffs and distortion attack, all of which he hot-houses into one, single, immensely pressurised groove.

With one eye on the warehouses and the other on festival season, this May, Johan draws a direct line between ’92 and ’26, for a ragga-rap-rave dancefloor heater. ‘Ready For The Jump’? Find it right here !

[item value="10"] Johan Gielen - Ready For The Jump[/item]
[content title="Summary" label="Overall Score"]Johan Gielen’s “Ready For The Jump” is an electrifying bridge between eras, delivering a masterclass in modern club production while honoring its 1992 hardcore roots. The track’s rhythm, groove, and drive hit with unrelenting force, powered by a 130 BPM pulse in the original and a 134 BPM TEC remix that offers DJs slight flexibility for set integration. Its rhythmic foundation is tight and precise, with kick and bass alignment generating a propulsive low-end that perfectly supports the thrashing rave stabs and distortion-heavy riffs. The melodic hooks and harmonic layers emerge subtly through sampled elements like the soulful Roy Ayers tones and the hypnotic textures lifted from “Total Confusion,” ensuring that even in the midst of its raw energy, there is an underlying musicality that resonates deeply on the dancefloor. Transitions, drops, and build-ups are meticulously crafted to sustain energy flow and momentum over the track’s runtime. Gielen leverages modern sound design techniques—sidechain compression, spectral layering, and stereo widening—to create drops that feel expansive and immersive. The sound design and production quality are top-notch, with attention paid to both frequency balance and dynamic range, resulting in a track that hits hard in clubs without sacrificing clarity. Effects and spatial design are expertly used, with Zulu Nation chants and “renegade” shouts bouncing across the stereo field, creating a three-dimensional experience. The cohesive arrangement tells a story that moves seamlessly from tension-building intros to euphoric peaks, maintaining BPM consistency and strong looping potential for DJs looking to integrate it into festival or warehouse sets. From a creative standpoint, “Ready For The Jump” asserts Johan Gielen’s artistic identity by reimagining classic elements with modern intensity. Its originality of arrangement lies in how it hot-houses chaotic ragga-rap-rave influences into a singular, pressurized groove that feels both retro and futuristic. The dynamic energy flow ensures the track is highly suitable for fitness and wellness applications; research indicates that high-energy music at this BPM range can enhance exercise performance, increase motivation, and trigger neurochemical responses associated with dopamine and endorphin release (Karageorghis & Priest, 2012; Thoma et al., 2013). The track’s immersive atmosphere and emotional resonance also contribute to positive effects on mood and mental health, aligning with studies showing that rhythmic, bass-driven electronic music can reduce stress and promote a flow state (Labbé et al., 2007; Baltazar et al., 2020). Johan’s use of dynamic range, cue points, and intro/outro structures demonstrates a clear understanding of DJ set flow, giving “Ready For The Jump” outstanding crowd reaction potential. Emotional resonance is reinforced by the interplay of militant rhymes and soulful samples, while its catchiness and replay value are undeniable, making it a track that works equally well for late-night club energy or high-intensity fitness classes. By reengineering a piece of dance music history with modern production finesse, Gielen has created a track that not only energizes dancefloors but also offers a scientifically supported boost to human performance and wellness. #PureGold Loveit [/content]
