Best of 2023 Interview with Sander Kuypers from Netherlands

To Sander Kuypers, music is home. It’s in rapturous melodies and heart-pounding basslines where he feels the sense of belonging. Fuelled by an undying love for all things music, this Dutch producer and DJ has made the goal to speak his musical mind and blaze his own trail forward. To be heard, his music felt and leave an impact on the international scene.

Hailing from the Dutch village of Druten and growing up in a family of musicians and dedicated music lovers, music has always played a major part in Sander’s everyday life. The radio would never stop playing, and with both his parents enamoured by the classical genre, it’s no wonder that the next generation found his solace in the trancy side of electronic music. Combined with an open mind towards other genres, Sander’s personal playlist is made of rock, pop, folk, country and EDM – a real melting pot of styles – as reflected in his own sound.

More than a dedicated music fan, Sander soon discovered he needed music to play a more significant part of his life. Doing a study in real estate to join his father’s company, made Sander realise he was missing the creative spark, the one thing that energized him. Moved him – and offered space to express himself. And so, he followed his heart and subscribed to the Elite program of Utrecht’s Sound Education course. There, he learned the basics of music making – and more. With tutors like Maarten Vorwerk, Mischa Jakobi and Victor Leicher (DubVision), he was taught the structure of music arrangement, how to handle professional studio equipment and bring out the best in his own sound. Rearranging and professionalizing his own studio was one of the goals, as well as learning to produce music efficiently – making sure that ‘less is more’. Music theory and arrangements were Sander’s favourites – always keeping the melody as the connecting, red wire through all of his productions.

At the moment, Sander is a self-employed painter during the day and a producer at night, using all of his spare time perfecting his sound and growing as a producer. Making music fulltime is his one goal, trying to build his own brand and, ultimately, connecting with people through his own originals and performances. Showtime is a major factor for Sander, as he dreams of moving ten-thousands of dedicated dance floor lovers at a time. Dreaming big, he invests all of his energy into making sure that happens, one day. Anything that works against that, is deleted from his life. Efficiency, dedication and a relentless passion for music, is what drives this eager mind.

With a sound that’s uplifting, euphoric and emotional, Sander’s sound doesn’t let itself be defined by a single genre. It’s a fusion of dance, prog-house, country and pop, reflecting and translating Sander’s vision that everyone is unique, as well as every bit of music. Forward-thinking, genre-bending combinations that steal your heart – and may sound odd on paper, but perfectly blend as soon as it hits the ear. It’s right here, comfortably stuck between the genres, where exciting new music comes to life – as it originates from the Sander Kuypers studio.
