MUSIC NEWS: Paul Baule - Zillion EP out on Anjunadeep incl. cool interview too

Anjunadeep is excited to welcome Berlin-based producer Paul Baule to the fold with his debut label release, ‘Zillion EP’.

Fans of the label may recognise the lead track ‘Illusionist’ from recent flagship compilation ‘Anjunadeep 14’, curated and mixed by label heads James Grant and Jody Wisternoff, where its delicate production stood out, even among over 40 other brilliant tracks.

Paul Baule has previously released on Amsterdam-based Click Records, as well as local Berlin labels Mind Field and Rebellion der Träumer, and earned himself support from DJ’s including Gabriel & Dresden, Jonas Rathsman, Alfa Romero, Frost and Mees Salomé.

Paul Baule's 'Zillion EP' is a masterclass in delicately-produced electronica that makes for an emotive listening experience, out June 6 on Anjunadeep.

Artist Spotlight: Paul Baule 🎤(taken from the official Anjunadeep newsletter)

Following his appearance on Anjunadeep 14, we are delighted to formally welcome Berlin-based producer Paul Baule to the label with his new ‘Zillion EP’. To celebrate the occasion, we sat down with him to chat about all things production, peninsulas and food poisoning… (?)

Tell us a bit about how you got into dance music, and how you started out DJing and producing.

Paul Baule: When I was about 16, a friend introduced me to Ableton Live. We spent all night building impossible-to-listen-to beats. And I was hooked like never before. In the following months I travelled across India and South East Asia, recording tons of exotic atmospheres, percussions, vocals and instruments which still inspire many of my works.

What is your favourite item in your studio?

Paul Baule: My favourite studio device is a Push 2, soon to be replaced by its successor. Combined with a Macbook, headphones and a strong power bank, I can use Push to produce outside, which I do whenever possible.

How did you first get in contact with Anjunadeep?

Paul Baule: I already knew Anjunadeep for quite a while when I received an email from your A&R Manager. I was just sitting in Kathmandu, Nepal, recovering from an intense Himalayan trek and food poisoning. The email came completely unexpected and helped my recovery a lot...

Your new EP, ‘Zillion’, is out now on Anjunadeep. Can you tell us a little about the four tracks that feature on it?

Paul Baule: ‘Illusionist’ has been breeding on my flashdrive for quite some years now. I always imagined whale-sized seabirds floating between gleaming clouds. It’s a great pleasure to finally see it published. ‘Au Max’ is my coping with the loss of a great friend. Of all my works, this one means the most to me. ‘Oortic Clouds’ was originally born out of a live-performance. It’s the EP’s most dancy track, made for starting the night. And ‘Rün’ is my dramatic way of saying bye to summer 2022.

All the tracks on the ‘Zillion EP’ were delivered to us here at Anjunadeep at over seven minutes long. Can you tell us more about your thoughts on extended tracks, and why your music works best in a longer format?

Paul Baule: I think my tracks would be even longer if I'd been born a decade earlier. I see the shortening and acceleration of everything we consume as a disease whose effects we completely underestimate. I’ll try not to sound too 19th century here, but “saving time” can be the same as wasting it. Because only taking time preserves our ability to truly appreciate it. This applies to both producing and listening to music.

We know you’ve got a mix coming out for the Anjunadeep Edition (on June 15). Could you tell us what we can look forward to in your mix?

Paul Baule: Since I've always been mainly interested in producing and live performing, DJing often comes up short. This mix was a good opportunity to finally use my XDJ700 again. You can look forward to a careful selection of some of my all-time favourites and current golden nuggets.

Who are some of your favourite producers at the moment?

Paul Baule: Sebastian Mullaert was and will remain one of my biggest idols. Great fan of Traumer, Frankey & Sandrino, GHEIST, Jesper Ryom, Leonardo Gonnelli and Ruede Hagelstein too.

Do you have any tips for anyone who’s just started in music production/DJing?

Paul Baule: Do your best to quickly pass the nasty entry threshold. Record your own sounds. Use only a handful of elementary devices, plugins and sample packs. Be honest and say what only you can say. Everything else already exists.

After this EP is out, what’s next on the cards for 2023?

Paul Baule: I'm really looking forward to playing my new live set this summer. One opportunity will be a small private festival I'm organising with friends on a peninsula near Berlin… It doesn't get any better than that.
