BEST OF 2022 Interview with Michael Anthony

NYC-based DJ & Producer Michael Anthony has been playing at the most popular venues in New York and around the world for over a decade. Whether he’s performing on the beaches of Cabo San Lucas, a rooftop in New York City, or in a nightclub in Montreal, Michael finds himself most at ease playing music for the crowd.

Early on in his career, Michael knew that in order to stand out as a DJ, he had to create his own tracks/remixes. After networking a bit in the NYC DJ scene, he began learning directly from the NYC trance duo legends Filo & Peri and quickly became committed to mastering the craft of music production.

Michael has released tracks on all worldwide marketplaces with many major artists. He was personally asked by the house music legend Stonebridge to remix his classic, “Sometimes” and a new release, “So Good”. Both releases charted internationally and gained the respect of the dance community. In 2021, Michael’s collaboration, “For You” was released on Will Sparks’ record label TeamWrk Records. His next release “Say Yes” was released on top Amsterdam record label Groove Bassment and quickly amassed over 100k streams on Spotify alone. Charting regularly on 1001Tracklists, international dance charts, and Beatport Top 100 charts are just a few of Michael’s accomplishments. His tracks have been in rotation on Sirius XM BPM and supported by top 100 DJ’S across the globe (EDX, Nora En Pure, Stonebridge, Bingo Players, Kryder, W&W, Judge Jules + many more…)

Recently, Michael has been busy in the studio after inking a record deal with EDX's Sirup Music Group. Be on the lookout for his forthcoming releases and show announcements.

Dimitris: Your Top 3 biggest music career achievements in 2022:

Michael Anthony: 1. I created as much music as possible - I have been in the studio cranking out original tracks, private edits, and even mash ups for my sets. There is nothing more rewarding than completing a track and testing it in front of a crowd. I've had the opportunity to collaborate with some amazing artists & vocalists and I look forward to continuing to evolve my craft.

2. I've played some amazing shows in NYC - I had the pleasure of working with some amazing promotional companies, venues, and DJs this year. I'd like to thank Deep Root Records, Ajamu Kambon, Techno Brooklyn, Ryan Provost, The Project 91 team, Superior Ingredients, Williamsburg Hotel, Ella Darr, Exron Music, and anyone else I forgot. I can't thank each one of them enough and look forward to 2023!

3. I signed with Sirup Music, a label that I've always admired. I was always a huge fan of EDX and his productions, so getting the opportunity to sign to his label was an honor. It's been a pleasure working with him and his team and I've even made some friendships that will last a lifetime.

Best of 2022

1) Best track(s) and short comment for each track from other fellow artists of 2022

Michael Anthony: WhoMadeWho & Rampa - UUUU (&ME Remix)

This was my favorite track of the year and in my opinion, it stood tall above the rest. An absolutely beautiful track that continues to build and progress throughout. The vocal is light and airy and sits atop this marching percussion that eventually builds itself up and crescendos in the second drop with a beautiful piano riff. I can't get enough of this track and I play it in everyone of my sets.

2) Best of 2022 personal productions with short comment about them:

Michael Anthony:  Michael Anthony - Something Better

It's a beautiful, uplifting, melodic track that takes you to a different place. Don't take my word for it - Something Better was supported by EDX, Nora En Pure, Sultan & Shepard, Kyau & Albert + more.

3) Best Artist of 2022(DJ & producer) with short comment:

Michael Anthony: Cristoph

I've had the privilege of seeing Cristoph play live multiple times throughout the year. His extended sets take everyone in the room on a journey. The crowd loses all sense of time and space and becomes one. Not only is he an amazing DJ but his productions are out of this world. From his unreleased work like "Trigger" & "Swoon" to cult favorites like his remix of Motorcycle's "As The Rush Comes", the man continues to out do himself. Each track is unique and created for a specific moment in a set. He is truly a wizard in the studio and on the decks.

4) Best Remix(es) from other fellow artists of 2022 with short comment :

Michael Anthony:  Anyma & Chris Avantgarde - Consciousness (Eric Prydz Remix)

Consciousness was one of the biggest tracks of the year. I didn't think it could be any bigger but then we started hearing rumblings that there might be an Eric Prydz remix floating around. When Eric puts out a remix, you know it's going to be massive.

5) YOUR Best Remix which you have produced of 2022 with short comment?

Michael Anthony:  All of my releases in 2022 were original tracks but I'll let you in on a little secret that I'm currently finishing up a private edit of one of my favorite Julie Mcknight vocals.

6) Best Remixer(s) of 2022 with short comment:

Michael Anthony: I'd have to say Cassian was the best remixer of 2022. Both his Sonny Fodera, Vintage Culture - Last Thought (Cassian Remix) & RÜFÜS DU SOL - On My Knees (Cassian Remix) were amazing remixes with his own personal style.

7) Best New Talent of 2022 (DJ or producer) with short comment :

Michael Anthony: Aaron Hibell. I stumbled across him on Instagram reels. He has been making these melodic techno remixes of popular songs with a Hanz Zimmer type of flair. His productions are really massive with big orchestral breaks and I'm looking forward to seeing what else he comes up with over the next few years.

8) Best electronic dance music album of 2022 with short comment:

Michael Anthony: RÜFÜS DU SOL - ‘Surrender Remixes’

A lot of artists have moved away from the album format and only work on singles and EPs now. The original Surrender album was amazing but the remix album really elevated each track to a new level.

I'm also really excited for the Franky Wah - THIS IS SHÈN album that will be out this November.

9) Best electronic dance music compilation of 2022 with short comment? :

Michael Anthony: UNITY PT. 3 by Afterlife Records. It's considered an album as well but with 30+ producers on it, I'm going to classify it as a compilation. Some absolutely amazing talent on this one and each UNITY album/compilation continues to impress.

10) Best artwork about single / album/compilation or promotional campaign of 2022 with short comment:

Michael Anthony: I've really loved everything that Anyma (Matteo from Tale of Us) has been doing when it comes to bridging the world between music and visuals and NFTs. It's a really cool concept that I can tell he has put a lot of thought and creative energy into.

My favorite artwork in particular was the artwork for "Angel 1".

11) Best lyrics in electronic dance music track(s) of 2022 with short comment :

Michael Anthony: I really enjoyed Franky Wah - Surrender ft. Clementine Douglas. A big powerful top line from Clementine with emotion and feeling. Franky finished up the track with a master class of progressive production. I always love a good string in the break down.

12) Best vocalist/singer on electronic dance music track of 2022 with short comment:

Michael Anthony: Lauren L'aimant has been killing it. She had some really beautiful works this year with Bound to Divide and some big progressive tunes with Paige. She actually also wrote and sang on my track "Dreams" which was released on Sirup Records this November.

13) Best electronic dance music label of 2022 with short comment:

Michael Anthony: I really thought Nora En Pure's label "Purified Records" did an amazing job of putting out nothing but quality tracks throughout the year.

14) Best electronic dance music video of 2022 with short comment:

Michael Anthony: Can't say that I have a specific video that stood out to me to be honest. I think most of my year consisted of watching highlights from Eric Prydz's Holo shows so I'll count those as music videos lol.

15) Best online social media of 2022 with short comment:

Michael Anthony: I really enjoy following Obsessive Progressive on Instagram, Soundcloud, and YouTube. I'd work to love with them in the upcoming year.

16) Best social media response you may have received about your music or your DJ performance of 2022:

Michael Anthony: It's really something whenever I get to engage with fans. Whether it's people commenting how much they enjoyed a track or where they first heard it or if they are commenting on my Instagram to let me know they'll be attending a show. Their support means the world to me and it really pushes me every day to work harder.

17) Best music composition software of 2022 with short comment:

Michael Anthony: I will forever be a Logic Pro guy. Been using it since 2006 and never looked back. I have heard how intuitive and creative Ableton can be and wouldn't rule trying it out in the future, but at this point, I'm so set in my work flow. My favorite VST is Serum from Xfer Records and my favorite plug in at the moment is ShaperBox from Cableguys.

18)Best club event /festival/music conference of 2022 with short comment:

Michael Anthony: I'd have to say Electric Zoo (EZoo) in New York City is something special. To see what that has become since its first year is really amazing.

19) Your Best personal DJ Gig & DJ performance of 2022 with short comment:

Michael Anthony: Closing the night at Superior Ingredients in Brooklyn, NY was definitely something special. There's a lot of history in that main room being the old Output and all, so getting to step on that stage in front of the crowd was a moment I won't forget. I hope to be back there soon.

20) Best DJ set from other fellow DJ (actual or online) of 2022 with short comment:

Michael Anthony: Cristoph's set at Brooklyn Mirage for the Electric Zoo after party. If you know you know. Absolutely mental set.

21) Best radio show/podcast/twitch stream or Vlog(video blog) of 2022 with short comment. It can be yours or from other artists you respect:

Michael Anthony: I've always enjoyed Bound to Divide's live streams and production vlogs. Really quality content there.

Another favorite has always been Laidback Luke's Vlog where he covers anything from mix down and mastering techniques, life on the road, mental health, or just checking in with fans and giving updates on his releases.

22) Best aftermovie for festival or club event of 2022

Michael Anthony: Tomorrowland Belgium 2022 | Official Aftermovie

23) Best music related website of 2022 with short comment:

Michael Anthony: I've always enjoyed reading WeRaveYou.com

They cover such a wide array of stories and have some really cool artist interviews.

24) Best production or DJ equipment (a)software & (b) hardware) of 2022 with short comment:

Michael Anthony: I had the chance to test the new Pioneer DJ DJM-V10 6-Channel DJ Mixer at Miami Music Week this year. It's insane. Still getting used to it over the 900. One of the coolest features is the compression knob that allows you to play older tracks and bring the dynamics and volume up to match current day ones. You can drop a disco track in the middle of a set like it's nothing and make it sound like it was produced and mastered last week.

25) Best sound sample that has been used frequently in electronic dance music tracks of 2022 (personal or from other artists):

Michael Anthony: Going to have to name Bound To Divide again. Love his kick pack.

26) Best technical tips that you learnt of 2022 in relation to your DJing or music productions:

Michael Anthony: Honestly - I tried to be less technical this year in my productions. I felt like at some point, I was too much in a box and following rules that I have been sticking to for a long time. Once I started paying attention to the quality of the sounds first, everything else fell into place. Just do what feels right, if you like how it sounds keep going with that idea. You can clean it all up after the fact.

27) Best piece of personal or music business' advice you got in relation to your career of 2022 and has helped you to progress even further:

Michael Anthony: Just really work as hard as possible. If this is something that is important to you, you have to put your head down and find the time to work on it.

I've had plenty of nights with barely any sleep but I know it will all be worth it.

28)Best hobby or non music related activity of 2022.

Michael Anthony: In the summer I love riding my bike (Specialized Diverge Elite), traveling, spending days at the beach, watching my Juventus.

In the winter I love snowboarding, going to breweries with friends, going on a nice long hike when I get the time.

29) Best ever electronic dance music track(s) of all times with short comment?

Michael Anthony: You're really going to ask me to choose just one......

It's between two for me that I have tied to so many memories with..

Âme - Rej

Pryda - Melo

30) From 1 (bad) to 10(super excellent) what is your rate for 2022 in electronic dance music?

Michael Anthony: 5.5 - We have a long way to go..

Dimitris: In which TV series, film or advert would you like to experience your track being used? Which track was the best placed on films/TV series/advert/official aftermovie of a festival from another artist?

Michael Anthony: I'd love to get one of my tracks on the FIFA soundtrack one year.

For best placement of the year, it was cool to see how much dance was placed in the Robert Patterson "The Batman" film. They filmed that fight scene at Printworks and really used a lot of techno and tech house throughout.

Dimitris: During 2022 we experienced many tracks that were hybrids of music styles & genres. Do believe that music genres or styles are still relevant today?

Michael Anthony: The lines have definitely become blurred. Genres will always been relevant in my opinion, but what constitutes the genre itself will change over time.

Dimitris: Do you have any concrete plans for 2023 regarding future releases, tracks, albums, collaborations, DJ gigs? Please provide us the juicy details.

Michael Anthony: Oh yes. I already have my first track signed for 2023, it's a melodic house track that will be released on Sirup Music. I have about 10-15 IDs that I have been playing in my sets and tweaking so I'm expecting another big year of continuous releases.

I'm also looking forward to collaborating with more producers and vocalists than ever before.

As far as gigs go, I will play my usual residencies in New York City and I'm working on a very special Miami gig that will likely get announced after the new year.

Dimitris: Your message & wishes for 2023.

Michael Anthony: Moving forward into 2023, let's be better to one another. There has been a lot of crazy shit going on the past 2-3 years and I think that people just need to remember that we're only here on this Earth for a finite amount of time. It's not worth the constant bickering and fighting and division. Love one another and let's make it a year to remember.
