Best of 2018 Interview with DJ & producer Mike Candys

Mike Candys is a gold and platinum selling artist from Switzerland and part of DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs since 4 years in a row.

Dimitris: Can you mention your biggest music career achievements in 2018?

Mike Candys: Together with my DJ-partner Jack Holiday we released a rework of the track "The Riddle Anthem", which immediately reached the top 5 iTunes charts in several countries.

Dimitris: Can you rate 2018 for you as a year with 1 being very bad until 10 that is perfect year!

Mike Candys: 8 very good year. I played a strong summer tour in 2018, including most of my long term residencies all across the Mediterranean sea. With the release of "The Riddle Anthem (Rework)" I was able to collaborate with many labels that I've worked successfully before.

1) Best 3 Tracks from other artists in 2018, please give us a short comment for each track:

Mike Candys: Chocolate Puma & Firebeatz - Blackout: very straight and simple but powerful electro track.

Fisher - Losing It: hard to say what it is, but this track even works for an audience that normally doesn't listen to that kind of music. You simply cannot stand still to this.

Calvin Harrris - One Kiss: Pop-House at it's finest. Catchy hookline, sexy vocals, groovy beat. Everything a commercial dance track needs.

2) Your 3 Best of 2018 personal productions, give us more background info about them:

Mike Candys: Mike Candys feat Rock Angelo - Life: I wrote this song on a long highway drive, had to stop from time to time to write down the lyrics and record some demovocals. It was just fun, working on the track.

Mike Candys & Jack Holiday - The Riddle Anthem (Rework): With our rework of the track, we got signed by many labels immediately, ie Spinnin.

Mike Candys - Pump It Up: I produced this track in the Studio-breaks when I should have worked on other stuff. I was just hooked immediately by the main synth pattern, so I uploaded some demos on my social media and the requests from DJs were huge. So we decided to release it in December 2018.

3) Best electronic music album in 2018? Please explain your decision why you think is the best album?(b) Do you believe that albums are still relevant or you prefer singles:

Mike Candys: I don't listen to any albums anymore.

4) Best vocalist/singer featured on electronic music track in 2018, please tell why you appreciate this singer/vocalist and why:

Mike Candys: Demi Lovato (Solo). Maybe it's just the song, but I totally like how she gives the lyrics a sad but strong touch at the same time.

5) Best online social media for 2018 and why you believe is the best particularly in 2018?:

Mike Candys: Instagram/Story. Real time posting/viewing is very important. Facebook has become to big and too slow.

6) Best music composition software in 2018, please explain why you appreciate it so much:

Mike Candys: I'm working with Logic since forever, don't know anything else.

7) Best Club event or Festival that you have performed there or you would love one day to perform there, please explain the reasons that influenced your choice of the event & festival:

Mike Candys: Papaya, Zrce Beach Croatia. I played there many times already and everytime it is something special. The stage, the crowd, the atmosphere is just perfect for me.

8) Best DJ set from other fellow DJ in 2018 and why you believe his/her set was so fantastic?:

Mike Candys: Unfortunately I never have time to watch other DJs sets live.

9) Best new sound or sample that has been introduced in any electronic music track in 2018 and you wish to have invented it or you may even have introduced it for the first time?

Mike Candys: some Basshouse sounds (FM Basses) that have been tweaked in 2018.

10) Best piece of advice you got in relation to your career in 2018 and has helped you to progress even further:

Mike Candys: When business get's more rough, you should get more chilled.

Dimitris: In 2018 the electronic music talent AVICII died and this has alerted several artists to become more health conscious. Are there any lessons to learn as an artist out from this sad event?

Mike Candys: Everybody knows that our job is a lot of fun but a lot of stress for both body and mind. We can only try to take it a little bit easier from time to time, but the business is tough: If you go slow, you go low. Either you keep up the pace or somebody else is gonna eat you. Try to get as much sleep as possible, stay away from drugs and too much alcohol, plan your touring properly, do sports.

Dimitris: If you are DJ or producer who travels very often to perform Live in various countries can you give us your best Travel Tip for 2018 in order to survive the long travelling hours?

Mike Candys: I always bring my audiobooks about ancient gods and cultures with me. This helps me on long distance flights to completely escape the DJ-World and pressure that comes along.

Dimitris: In 2018 there was a big movement for revival of classic tracks and retro events have boomed with music policy of solely classic tracks. What is your opinion about events or stages only with classics and can you choose for us your absolute 3 favourite classics?

Mike Candys: Totally fine with classics, since I'm 47 years old.
