Best of 2018 Interview with DJ & producer Gil Glaze

Let’s scrap the nonsense and get started on telling you about the Swiss born deep and future house DJ and producer, Breeze Records and events owner and basically an all-round good guy that loves a party. Holding residencies at Lavo and Marquee in New York and Las Vegas, Miami’s LIV & Story, Omnia San Diego and more, there is an amazing buzz for Zurich’s notable artist. From the sold out shows and billboards lining the streets of Europe to infinite releases on some of the globe’s leading dance labels, we’ve got the goods on Gil.

Enlisting his roots in the open format world, Gil had a light bulb moment with house music that lit up his profile. At the top of his game, his resonation with pioneering talent like EDX, Oliver Heldens, Nora En Pure was obvious and he met his match! Serious with his craft, Gil is a legitimately trained musician (no he doesn’t just press buttons) having studied a spectrum of music theory, business and production at the New York University- Clive Davis School of Recorded Music, giving him a well-endowed lead in the industry. Signing music across Sirup Music, Enormous Chills, No Definition and more, Gil’s drive for dance-floor ready monsters is evident. Gaining global support from Tiesto, Don Diablo, Sam Feldt and a plethora of other boss icons in electronic music, there is no lying about the 300k+ Spotify streams and Beatport top 100 records, lining five up under his belt including ‘Can’t Let You Go’ via Dirty Soul, where Bakermat and MK also hold high regard.

At the clubs, on the stage, the dance floors, the pool parties and more, Gil isn’t shy of a an enviable show. From sold out headlining shows to residencies across the US, it has lead him to global tours around the world including Australia, Europe, Asia and main slots at Exit Festival Serbia for 60,000+ people. On the back of this, the World Club Dome Festival in Frankfurt lit up while the hottest summer parties in Ibiza and the Greek Islands (Mykonos) alongside David Guetta and Tiesto and he even had the opportunity to play back to back with Martin Garrix, Calvin Harris, Marshmello and Kygo have been standouts.

Holding high regard in electronic music and a resume of milestones, the only other thing you need to know right now is Gil Glaze has two upcoming tracks set to be his best work yet and a blazing summer ahead, so stay tuned. [Bio taken from his about facebook page]

Dimitris: Can you mention your biggest music career achievements in 2018?

Gil Glaze: Getting to release on Armada has been a big goal of mine since I was young and this year I’ve had two tracks signed there.

Dimitris: Can you rate 2018 for you as a year with 1 being very bad until 10 that is perfect year!

Gil Glaze: 6 quite good year, It’s been an interesting year. Wouldn’t say it’s been the best year for me since I took the time to discover myself musically and focus more on studio ... have 20 tracks ready. I also took the time to create a closer relationship with my residency’s and think about the people who work with me on my team. Now that it’s the end of the year I feel ready for 2019 and realize 2018 was my preparation year.

1) Best 3 Tracks from other artists in 2018, please give us a short comment for each track:

Gil Glaze: Lanna - Maybe
Love this track as to me it’s the definition of melodic house and the vocals and lyrics are special in this one.

Martin Garrix - Dreamer
The new track from him with Mike Yung is so unique and different from Martins usual sounds!

EDX - Anthem
Always a big fan of his productions but to me I find this one is so good to play in the clubs and really goes beyond the blend of deep house and trance elements.

2) Your 3 Best of 2018 personal productions, give us more background info about them:

Gil Glaze - Lost Kings feat. Tove Styrke- Stuck (Gil Glaze Remix)
Got the chance to remix this as Lost Kings are signed to same management as Chainsmokers who I did a remix for last year.

Deepend feat.Janieck - To Rome (Gil Glaze x Lanna Remix)
Teamed up with my buddy Lanna for this one.

Gil Glaze x Barkley - Want From U
Loved the unique sounds of Barkley’s tracks and since we are on the same label it only made sense to collab!

3) Best Artist in 2018(DJ & producer) please explain why you pick him/her up:

Gil Glaze: Lanna - 2018 was her year and she only really came into the scene last year. She releases track after track and is always consistent in her productions. I’ve listened to some of her unreleased tracks and can tell you 2019 will be her year!

4) Best Remix in 2018, please explain why you liked it so much:

Gil Glaze: David Guetta feat. Ann Marie - Don’t Leave Me Alone (EDX Remix)

5) Best Remix that you have produced in 2018, please tell us why you believe is your best work?

6) Best Remixer for 2018, please tell us why you choose him/her:

7) Best New Talent in 2018 (DJ or producer), please explain the reasons why you choose him/her :

8) Best electronic music album in 2018? Please explain your decision why you think is the best album?(b) Do you believe that albums are still relevant or you prefer singles:

Gil Glaze: Jonas Blue - Blue
Think this is a great album as it defines who Jonas Blue is and it has some amazing collaborations on it. Think Jonas Blue is very underrated and 2019 could be his year!
(b) I believe albums for electronic acts are a bit over but the cool thing about this album is it brings together all his past singles.

9) Best electronic music compilation in 2018, please explain what exactly you liked about this compilation(the elements you appreciate):

Gil Glaze:  For me all of Sirup's compilations are very good this year because they don’t focus on just adding in new music but dig deep into some of their old catalogues.

10) Best artwork/cover for a single/ album or compilation released in 2018, please justify your opinion why this and not another one:

Gil Glaze: Jonas Blue - Blue. Like the effect they have on it and how it looks like he’s flying when really it must be a photo of him standing yet they rotated his image.

11) Best lyrics in an electronic music track in 2018 (it can be your production or from other artists) Please explain why you like these lyrics so much!

Gil Glaze: Chainsmokers - Sick Boy ..... love the lyrics in this one since it relates to a lot of people and especially is a personal one to the Chainsmokers since it discusses and east side and west side differences in America. It’s got this Emo vibe to it so it’s one of those tracks you either love or hate! I heard this track before it was released while one tour with them and loved it!

12) Best vocalist/singer featured on electronic music track in 2018, please tell why you appreciate this singer/vocalist and why:

Gil Glaze: Spinnin Records! Love that they make music for everyone and are not stuck to one genre. It’s been the biggest dream of mine to release there!

14) Best electronic music video for 2018, please explain why you like this video so much:

Gil Glaze: DJ Snake - Taki Taki / love the work from Colin Tiley and the production of this video is insane. Lots of small elements like the shoes he wears or the Range Rover where you see that they involve brand deals.

Gil Glaze: Instagram - think they beat everyone in the game with something so simple - photos and videos!

16) Best Twitter/Facebook/Instagram message you may have received about your music or your DJ performance in 2018:

Gil Glaze: There’s no particular message but all the ones about me inspiring young producers and DJs makes me so happy and motivated to work harder! I do occasionally get messages saying my music helps them get through hard times etc.. which is still today a surprise for me!

19) Your Best personal DJ Gig for 2018 (if you are active as DJ) and why you believe is the finest:

Gil Glaze: Nora En Pure Purified shows are my favorite to just put on while driving home or when I’m chilling in my living room. Nice to hear her chill out sounds!

Dimitris: Do you have a radio show or vlog? Have you produced any YouTube tutorials for fellow artists to learn from you? If yes please tell us here the details and choose the best episode from your radio show/vlog/YouTube tutorial for 2018.

Gil Glaze: Yes I have a monthly radio show on Swiss radio Planet 105 where this year I’ve tried to add in a lot of exclusive content like unreleased tracks!

Gil Glaze: Would have to say two of my own tracks where we use a classic sample! Hopefully can clear it and release in 2019!

25) Best technical tips that you learnt in 2018 in relation to your DJing or music productions:

Gil Glaze: Don’t use the master tempo button as it ruins the quality of your tracks on CDJs.

26) Best piece of advice you got in relation to your career in 2018 and has helped you to progress even further:

Gil Glaze: Don’t let anyone tell you what to do. That was my biggest mistake in 2018 that made me loose my creativity. I felt that my career was being taken over by others and to be honest lost the motivation. Now during the past months I feel ready for 2019 and have gained my confidence and creativity back where I have already had two huge achievements this month!

Dimitris: Can you mention briefly your plans for your future releases, tracks, albums, collaborations, DJ gigs for 2019!

Gil Glaze: Currently working on a collaboration with Mastrovita and Redondo on some tracks! No album for now. Signed two new tracks for beginning of next year and one which is my personal favorite.

Dimitris: Finally, what is your biggest wish for 2019 and give us your wishes for our readers?

Gil Glaze: My biggest wish is to sign a major label deal and have a track on one of my dream labels!

Thanks to Gil for his awesome detailed answers, Thanks to Sirup Music team for organising this interview.
