Best of 2018 Interview with DJ & producer Dave Winnel


Dave Winnel is signed to Armada music. With his diverse music style this has also seen him release on internationally acclaimed record labels, AXTONE, Def Jam, Size, Ministry Of Sound & Big Beat. In 2016 Dave collaborated with Armin Van Buuren & released the summer festival hit ‘The Race’ which topped 1 million plays on Spotify & ‘raced’ to the top of the beatport top 10. His single ‘Don’t Stop’ clocked up 2 million plays on Spotify, which inturn made Winnel one of the most sought-after remixers, doing official mix’s for Twenty One Pilots, Clean Bandit, Axwell / Ingrosso, Anne Marie, Bastille, Hardwell & Adam Lambert. Dimitris: Can you mention your biggest music career achievements in 2018?

Dave Winnel: Playing Tomorrowland on the Axtone Stage.

Dimitris: Can you rate 2018 for you as a year with 1 being very bad until 10 that is perfect year!

Dave Winnel: 9 excellent year, Although I had a great year, there's always room to go bigger the next. 



1) Best 3 Tracks from other artists in 2018, please give us a short comment for each track:

Dave Winnel: 1. Basement Jaxx - Bingo Bango (Kryder & Tom Staar Remix)[This track had been doing the rounds on the internet for what seemed like years. Finally it got a release in 2018]



2. DJ Koze - Pick UP [What a track. So much emotion. Has a nostalgic feel, which I loveee]



3. Lee Cabrera vs Thomas Gold - Shake It (Nic Fanciulli Edit) [Heard this everywhere when I was in ibiza. The biggest build up ever!!!]



2) Your 3 Best of 2018 personal productions, give us more background info about them:

Dave Winnel: 1. Dave Winnel - Saxamaphone (Day & Night Mix) [The day mix was the first mix I made which I thought was perfect except when I played it out, sometimes, it didn't have the impact I was after. So I made the Night mix. Much tougher and has more balls!]



2. Dave Winnel - Acid Trippin [I debuted this one at Tomorrowland. Went down super sick! Straight up weapon!]



3. Fisher - Losing It (Dave Winnel Unofficial Remix) [Armin, Hardwell, Tiesto, Nicky Romero, are just some of the names that dropped this in their sets. BIGGGg]



3) Best Artist in 2018(DJ & producer) please explain why you pick him/her up:

Dave Winnel: Chris Lake. He's always been one of my number ones! He's always been doing his own thing, but doing it with style and 2018 saw him take this to the next level!



4) Best Remix in 2018, please explain why you liked it so much:

Dave Winnel: As I said above.... Basement Jaxx - Bingo Bango (Kryder & Tom Staar Remix)[This track had been doing the rounds on the internet for what seemed like years. Finally it got a release in 2018]

Dave Winnel: CHUSAP (Aus) Loving his style. Very playable records. 



8) Best electronic music album in 2018? Please explain your decision why you think is the best album?(b) Do you believe that albums are still relevant or you prefer singles:

Dave Winnel: Above & Beyond - Common Ground 

I love artists albums. Especially buying them in physical form, CD or Vinyl. I don't care much for them digitally on, itunes or Spotify. But there is something special about printing them physically.



9) Best lyrics in an electronic music track in 2018 (it can be your production or from other artists) Please explain why you like these lyrics so much!

Dave Winnel: Feenixpawl & Dave Winnel - Find A Way 
I think everyone can relate to these lyrics in some way.



10) Best vocalist/singer featured on electronic music track in 2018, please tell why you appreciate this singer/vocalist and why:

Dave Winnel: Au/Ra from Camelphat's 'Panic Room'. Her haunting vocals mixed with the lush backing is perfect.  



11) Best electronic music label for 2018, please justify why you choose this label and what was so special in 2018 about it:

Dave Winnel: Armada Music. They release quality records week in week out! Such a great family to be apart of. 



12) Best electronic music video for 2018, please explain why you like this video so much:

Dave Winnel: Peking Duk - Reprisal 
A legit cinematic music video that is almost 10minutes long, Dammnnn!!



13) Best online social media for 2018 and why you believe is the best particularly in 2018?:

Dave Winnel: FISHER - this guy is hilarious. 



16) Best music composition software in 2018, please explain why you appreciate it so much:

Dave Winnel: Ableton Live 10. I've been using Ableton for years now, they really stepped it up for 10. I also love iZotope Nectar 3, actually anything from iZotope is bossss!

17) Best Club event or Festival that you have performed there or you would love one day to perform there, please explain the reasons that influenced your choice of the event & festival:

Dave Winnel: Tomorrowland, Was an honour to play my first Tomorrowland this year. Something I'll never forget. 



18) Your Best personal DJ Gig for 2018 (if you are active as DJ) and why you believe is the finest:

Dave Winnel: Tomorrowland - Belgium 



19) Best DJ set from other fellow DJ in 2018 and why you believe his/her set was so fantastic?:

Dave Winnel: Armin Van Buuren - Tomorrowland
I was in the crowd with my friends during his set. We had a crazy time. I remember everytime a track dropped the whole crowd would bounce and the temporary floor under us on top of the grass would also bounce throwing everyone higher in the air. was crazy. 



20) Best radio show/podcast or Vlog(video blog) in 2018, please explain why you think this is the best radio show or vlog?:

Dave Winnel: Kryteria Radio by Kryder. Kryder always is ontop of the hottest groove tracks while also supporting the best up coming talent.

I visit this page religiously. Its great to see which artists are supporting my new tracks and also great to find new music. 

23) Best new sound or sample that has been introduced in any electronic music track in 2018 and you wish to have invented it or you may even have introduced it for the first time?

Dave Winnel: I love anything that is quirky or weird. Also anything that has an organic type sound, like a real instrument or an old recorded sample. 

24) Best technical tips that you learnt in 2018 in relation to your DJing or music productions:

Dave Winnel: I learnt this year how to mix a lot better on Headphones. Being away from my studio meant I really had to step up my game. I think as long as you're referencing back and forth between other songs on your headphones you can't go wrong. Keep A/Bing between different songs and you'll hear what your own track needs more or less of. 

25) Best piece of advice you got in relation to your career in 2018 and has helped you to progress even further:

Dave Winnel: Learn to trust other people to get a job done for you.. ie: Outsource. 

Dimitris: In 2018 the electronic music talent AVICII died and this has alerted several artists to become more health conscious. Are there any lessons to learn as an artist out from this sad event?

Dave Winnel: We all have to look after each other more and be more open with how we are feeling. 



Dimitris: If you are DJ or producer who travels very often to perform Live in various countries can you give us your best Travel Tip for 2018 in order to survive the long travelling hours?

Dave Winnel: Buy a Nintendo Switch and you'll never be bored on the road again! ;)

Dimitris: In 2018 there was a big movement for revival of classic tracks and retro events have boomed with music policy of solely classic tracks. What is your opinion about events or stages only with classics and can you choose for us your absolute 3 favourite classics?

Dave Winnel: I'm a sucker for anything which gives that nostalgic feeling so I love the classics.

Dimitris: Can you mention briefly your plans for your future releases, tracks, albums, collaborations, DJ gigs for 2019!

Dave Winnel: I'm planning a very special 4 track EP called, 'Lily Of The Valley' which we will be doing a limited Vinyl pressing, which I am super excited about.

Dimitris: Finally, what is your biggest wish for 2019 and give us your wishes for our readers?

Dave Winnel: I wish for world peace.. haha. no but seriously I wish for 2019 there to be not so much negativity online. People can be so cruel. Like my mum always said "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything".
