Billows of steam rose through cracks in the rocks below his feet. With each step, he had to wonder how close he was to impending doom. Not 20 minutes before, our hero was deep in the heart of the Costa Rican jungle. The Bearded Man gave a half-hearted, nervous laugh as his guide told him about the deadly spiders that lied waiting for him in just about every nearby bunch of bananas. They hacked their way through thick vines with a rusty machete, and danger had never seemed so close at hand and yet so hard to identify. Aside from the sweat-stained heat, the sights and smells were intoxicating. After reaching a clearing, the pair were now climbing up the rocks on the side of Arenal, which was an active volcano at the time. The heat from the steam was impressive, but they forged onwards, fully aware that the volcano could erupt at any moment. Unfazed, they reached the summit, looking down onto one of the most awe-inspiring sights The Bearded Man had ever seen. The view from Up There was something else, and yet all he could think about was whether or not that waitress would still be waiting for him later that night. Two hours later, the volcano erupted, filling the night sky with eery orange light. The Bearded Man was safely in his cabana of course, as one of his life's mottos is: "Never be in the wrong place at the wrong time."
