Head due south from Times Square, past Rockefeller Center, the Empire State, Bryant Park et al and you’ll hit the Gansevoort Park Avenue NYC. With a reputation fuelled by some of NYC’s most fabled rooftop pool parties, by night the NoMad hotel has come to characterize larger-than-life, entertainment-centric hotel habitation. By day, only at odds with its capaciousness, the Gansevoort’s mien is that of boutique-ish eclecticism.
Eclectics of a different, far more va-riotous variety are the through-and-through of the Manufactured Superstars. Regular Gansevoort DJ overlords, the Superstars (Brad Roulier & Shawn Sabo) have assembled two reflective mixes to compress a 24-hour stay into 150 espresso minutes of experience-capturing music.
Manufactured Superstars’ ‘Suite Beats’ caps off an impressive recent stretch for the pair. It’s one that has seen them release their ‘Magnetic’ and ‘Prepare For Lift Off’ E.P.s - tracks from which have lit up radio waves and sailed up sales charts. Most notably the latter E.P. saw lead single ‘Like Satellites’ hit Super Rotation on Sirius XM, become a Billboard dance smash and take up 3-month-long residency as an iTunes bestseller.
For ‘Suite Beats’ the Superstars have drawn on the sonics of a diverse cross-section of major leaguers… Tracks remixes + exclusive edits from mainstage champions like Calvin Harris, Avicii, Nicky Romero and Afrojack; singers including Katy Perry and groups like The Killers all diversely 360 the Gansevoort’s musical vibe. Also up for a big day/night soundtrack of the Gansevoort are artists including Fedde le Grand, Bingo Players, Kaskade, R3hab, Chocolate Puma and scores of others. Naturally there’s also a more than healthy track-stack from the Superstars themselves. Leaving no electronic music sub-style un-kissed, no recent decade un-referenced and no rump un-shaken, this is the sound of Gansevoort’s Manufactured Superstars Suite Beats!
Kicking off the Gansevoort sunrise stretch, their Day set dawns bright with the rousing acapella of Roland ‘Urban Soul’ Clark’ and Powers That Be’s ‘Planet Rock’. From there comes a sun-up percolation of the MFSS’ rework of Calvin Harris’ ‘Thinking About You’, Brad & Shawn’s own ‘Angry Panda’ and their 2014 ‘Stay’ collab with Jarvis Church. EDM dynamics are hardwired into the mix’s midsection with ‘Now Or Never’ from Tritonal, Nicky Romero’s re-cut of R3hab/Lucky Date’s ‘Rip It Up’ and ‘Back’ from Stefano Pain & Marcel all present & electrifyingly correct. Calvin lets some wilder frequencies loose with his rework of The Killers ‘When You Were Young’; the LFO drops low on ‘I Choose U’ from New York pairing Timeflies and the house pounds tough from Size-men Third Party on ‘Everyday Of My Life’. Classily signing off on the Daytime, Brad and Shawn drop their own MFSS mainline elevation of Katy Perry’s ‘Unconditional’ into the Gansevoort equation.
For the second mix, the Superstars tap instinctively into the Gansevoort’s after-dark vibe, with the first half of the Night mix showcasing a decade-jumping and distinctly NYC-ish covenant. The Salsoul-ish flavors of 80s duo Aurra’s seed it with soulfully funky class, as Buffalo boys Solidisco bring ‘Make Up Your Mind’ right up-to-date. The big beats of The Cube Guys and even bigger voice of Barbara Tucker keep that vibe flowing with the trio’s cover of ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’. Sugar Hill & Andre Plati meanwhile plant their nu-disco-ish seal on Bronx girl Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King’s ‘Love Come Down’ with ‘Feel the Way I Feel’. A decade bump and the Manufactured Superstars bring housing 90s M1 pianos and some instantly recognizable lyrics to ‘My Body’, before Criminal Vibes warp listeners through to the Noughties, with their version of ‘I Need A Miracle’.
Avicii’s Edit of ‘Miami ‘82’ from Syn Cole heralds a big second-half run of Manufactured music… Beatport smashes ‘Like Satellites’, ‘Jumping’, ‘Zombies In Love’, and ‘The Music’ sit alongside Afrojack’s retake of ‘George F’s ‘Wayo’ and the Bingo Players’ ‘Cry’, to soundtrack the Gansevoort’s final to-dawn hours.
