Tips and tricks to getting started as a singer/songwriter in the world of edm based on Jaren experiences.
1. Sign up as a writer for your country's collection society. This topic alone could use it's own video, but to get acquainted, visit this link: click here
2. Figure out how to record songs. You'll either need to rent a studio or get your own setup. There are many types depending on your budget. YouTube and Google are great places to start. For the basic setup you will need:
a) condenser mic
b) pre-amp
c) computer
d) software: logic, protools, garage band, etc.
e) headphones for recording
f) quiet place without echo to record
3. Make a demo to showcase your abilities as a singer/songwriter. If you don't know the specifics about how to do this, YouTube it based on the software you are using. There are excellent tutorials out there.
4. Contact producers:
a) make a list of producers you'd like to work with and reach out to them however you can (Facebook, email, twitter, etc.)
b) give them some information about yourself (keep it brief - but put your best foot forward)
c) give them links to your work and social media, website, etc.
5. Collaborate - Identify your strengths and weaknesses, keep your writing fresh, network
6. Educate yourself - Learn the basics about things like music publishing, songwriting, etc. These books really helped me: click here click here
7. Think long term!
8. Get a foot in the door. You'll have to make compromises here and there as you establish yourself. Don't let people walk all over you, but be willing to be flexible on certain occasions.
9. Be professional!
a) keep correspondence concise and professional
b) being organized helps a LOT
c) turn projects in on time
d) be easy to work with
10. Don't give up! Turn rejection into a game. The sting will quickly fade!
BONUS #11 - Have FUN! If you don't enjoy it, change something. This has taken me a long time to learn.
If this has proven helpful to you, let Jaren know! Follow her at her social media and why not to contact her and share your experiences with her.
DISCLAIMER: There is no 'one way' to do this. Each artist has their own methods. These are the ones I've perfected over the years and that work for me.
