ADE 2014: The Future of Electronic Music Journalism in The Netherlands

Nowadays people often tend to think about EDM when discussing electronic music. But pretty much all popular music today is electronic music, from the biggest pop anthems to the grimiest bass music and from rap to R&B to dancehall. How does the international take-over of electronic music translate to the world of journalism? Many pop critics are rooted in an area where playing a guitar live on stage was pretty much an essential. And many articles have been written on DJ’s ‘just standing behind their laptop’ or rappers ‘that didn’t even bring a band to the festival’. Can we critique modern acts with the same set of standard we used to critique the generations before them? What are essential ingredients for a good electronic music write-up? What should be better in mainstream electronic music reporting? We discuss the future of electronic music journalism in The Netherlands with a group of esteemed Dutch music journalists.
