Though many of club culture’s key creators studied solely at the University of Life, today’s new generation of DJs, marketers and entrepreneurs can choose from a bewildering selection of courses and degree options, curated more often than not by the self-same, and self-made, individuals who previously invented their own career paths.
From masters degree courses in Music Festival Management to BA courses in Music Production or Music Journalism, every aspect and level of club culture business- and theory - is increasingly catered for, while academic papers and books on the history of nightlife simultaneously dissect, and increasingly define, the roots of today’s business of dancing.
ADE assembles a top team of dance music Doctors, Professors, authors and theorists to debate the science of nightlife, what they’ve learned, and what implications ‘academisation’ (defined in one dictionary as ‘reducing a subject to a rigid set of rules, principles, precepts’) has for the future of club culture.

Hillegonda Rietveld (London South Bank University, GB)

Martin James (Southampton Solent University, GB)

On the same day at Dylan Hotel just some meters away from Felix Merits you should attend The Brave New World of (Dance) Music Journalism
17/10/2014 17:00 - 18:00
The Dylan (D2 Panel Room) | Keizersgracht 384, Amsterdam
As global club culture thrives off the back of the massive infusion of cash and interest generated by EDM’s explosion, a new wave of news portals, bloggers and outspoken individuals (think Twitter) have similarly sprung up to transform dance music media beyond all recognition.
But with traditional print media suffering from cataclysmic collapses in both circulations and revenue, what are the new models necessary for making enough money to avoid newspapers’ fates and what implications do these new rules have for journalism itself and editorial integrity? And what are the implications for journalists, in particular, how much (or how little) they can expect to be nowadays paid?
And with EDM stars such as Steve Aoki recently proudly defending his cake throwing antics as being an integral part of his art, is there any room left for traditional ‘it’s all about the music’ criticism when lifestyle reporting more accurately reflects the activities of today’s biggest DJ stars and seemingly their fans.
Speakers:
Joe Muggs (Finetunes, GB)
Journalist who specialises in electronic music.
Nick DeCosemo (Mixmag, GB)
Editor of Mixmag and long-standing specialist in electronic music.
Rafael Weiss (Reddit, US)
Moderator of Reddits /r/electronicmusic.
Zel McCarthy (THUMP, US)

More speakers to be announced
These are just two examples of the wealth of topics that you can discover about Electronic Dance Music culture at this year's ADE that Music is not just business but is actually a whole way of life.
