At the very heart of this year’s festival is ADE Playground, a five-day series of events consisting of pop-up stores, hardware workshops and master classes, as well as photography exhibitions, fine art, films and documentaries, all of which reflect the many faces of global dance culture. The initial ADE Playground program is already online, with more information to be added as we get imminently closer to the festival.
Here are 10 ADE Playground things to look out for:
After celebrating their 20th Anniversary last year, German’s leading electronic label Kompakt will bring back their pop-up store to the Oz. studio in Amsterdam’s Red Light District. Visitors will have the opportunity to get their hands on new exclusives, meet the team and see daily performances from the likes of Michael Mayer, Tobias Thomas & Kölsch and more.

Kompakt Records!
With support from DGTL, the Kompakt Pop up store will be situated in the lovely Oz. studio and project space located right in the middle of Amsterdam's infamous Red Light District. From October 15th till 18th from 2-8pm we will not only have exclusive content in our shop but also daily performances by Kompakt mainstays and label friends downstairs.

During the event, a team of skilled illustrators will be crafting a series of hand-drawn sketches, depicting the day-to-day goings on throughout the conference. These will be available for viewing at the MixTup Gallery, which will be constantly updated as the conference goes on. Free access for ADE Card holders

Is drawing in any way related to dance culture? Can these disciplines find a symbiotic relationship while retaining their independent qualities? Drawing is an art form associated with solitude and isolation, without the instant gratification and unity provided by dance parties. But it’s surely possible to showcase the power of drawing by making an artistic impression of Amsterdam Dance Event.
The Open Draw is an international network of emerging and established drawing artists and illustrators who work with various aspects of drawing. In particular they seek each other out for creative innovation and experimentation in visual literacy.
Sketch artists will be sent out to document Amsterdam Dance Event culture, conference and party, each artist according to their own style. During ADE The Open Draw will present these sketches and artworks in a growing exhibition that is final only on the Sunday. It is the first of a kind artistically authentic visual document of the biggest dance event in the world.
The exhibition takes place at The Mixtup Project which opens it’s doors for this ADE Playground special.

3/ Uncovered: the art of the album cover
Over at Mini Galerie, ADE Playground will be presenting an exhibition highlighting some of the more original, hand designed artworks that have graced the scene’s LP sleeves over the past 12 months.

The Mini Galerie proudly presents Uncovered: The art of the album cover. For decades visual artists have been creating art for record covers. By the virtue of these artists the album cover evolved from a plain package to an object of desire in its own rights. The cover design has become an important and integral part of the music experience. The exhibition will uncover the original artworks by the artists Boris Tellegen, Maya Hayuk, Jeroen Erosie, Graphic Surgery, Ekta, Merijn Hos and Rop van Mierlo that have been used for the cover design of various dance records.
4/ Boy George at ADE MusicTalks
As part of this year’s ADE MusicTalks, Culture Club’s Boy George will be talking about his illustrious career, how he topped the charts and what life is like now as an international touring DJ. At ADE Playgrounds’ brand new hotspot 'De Brakke Grond', ADE will host a series of MusicTalks: Q&A’s with artists, free for music enthusiasts and fans holding an ADE Card and ADE delegates. Two days packed with some of the worlds’ biggest artists. Expect live Q&A’s with DJ’s who share their experience, passion and music! Questions allowed!
Boy George (UK)
Boy George has had an amazing career starting with Culture Club who were one of the biggest pop acts of the 80s, selling millions of records, and topping charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Nowadays he still is extremely active as a DJ and recording artist, has his own clothing line, B-Rude, and this summer played a series of sold out shows with the reformed Culture Club.
5/ ADE Ableton Playground Space
Ableton returns to ADE Playground where they’ll be hosting workshops relating to their Live 9 software package and innovative new Ableton Push MIDI controller while well-known artists will be dropping by to share their wisdom in the form of exclusive talks and performances.

As part of this year's ADE Playground (Location Compagnietheater), Ableton will present daily Ableton Push and Live 9 workshops, artist talks & performances, master classes and more. In addition we’ll host special artist sessions on the 4DSound system located in the same building.
Next to our gear-workshops and hands-on Push stations where you can try Ableton Push and Live 9 - visitors to the Ableton Playground space will have a chance to meet other Live users, product specialists and Ableton Certified Trainers. We look forward to seeing you at the ADE Playground!
6/ Focusrite Novation Showcases
Novation will also be returning to this year’s Playground, where the pioneering firm will be presenting a wide range of gear, including hardware synths like the Bass Station II and MiniNova, innovative MIDI controllers such as the Launchpad and Launchkey series, as well as an extended family of digital DJ controllers and accessories.

Playground Gear is the part of ADE that appeals to the gear freaks and technuts out there. The world’s leading artists, along with the newest and most innovative gear, will be present in a series of music panels and technology master-classes.
Two of the city’s central locations, The Flemish Cultural Centre De Brakke Grond and The CompagnieTheater, will offer unique and new experiences to this year’s Playground Gear attendees. The historical venues, located within a few minutes walk of each other, present themselves with showcase halls and presentation theatres. These new spaces will allow DJs and producers to roadtest gear, while engaging in high-brow discourse about their productions and career.
7/ Native Instruments Showcases
Native Instruments will be showcasing their latest production software, gear and DJ accessories, as part of this year’s Gear program. As with every year, the German music firm will have some of the biggest names in the dance scene to showcase their goods.

8/ Mix, Mingle & Move
Mix, Mingle & Move over at Amsterdam’s art’otel will combine funk, soul and hip-hop alongside photography and illustration exhibitions, providing what they describe as the perfect place for ‘mingling’ in an ‘unpretentious’ environment. Free access for ADE Card holders

9/ ADE Sound Academy presents: 4D Sound
The revolutionary 4D SoundSystem will be on display throughout ADE; a “spatial instrument” that allows users to “walk through space and experience sound from all directions”. Celebrated artists including Vladislav Delay, Max Cooper and Stimming will all play on the system over the course of the event. Read more about 4D Sound here.
