REVIEW: Retro Stefson "Qween" (Kraak&Smaak and Hackman remixes) out on Rough Trade

Continuing their non-stop UK tour schedule, Icelandic pop force Retro Stefson have been invited by Radio 1’s Huw Stephens to play his stage at this year’s Latitude Festival. The septet celebrate this news by delivering a more chilled out & glitchy version of their unashamedly 90s house inspired gem ‘Qween’, remixed by prolific Dutch producering duo Kraak & Smaak. ‘Qween’, taken from Retro Stefson’s recent self-titled album, is released just ahead of Latitude Festival on July 20th.

Already an award winning, gold disc holding, chart topping band in their home country of Iceland, Retro Stefson maintain the intellect, depth and dynamism we’ve come to expect from Icelandic music, theirs is a bright & dazzling kaleidoscope of melodies and beats that is entirely unique.

Fronted by brothers Unnsteinn and Logi Stefánsson, they have been making music since they were 16 – a fact that goes some way to explain how a band quite so young sounds so mature. Their previous two LPs were released locally and eagerly devoured by the Icelandic audience, but on this third full length, Retro Stefson showcase a sound that demands attention the world over.

Taking influences equally from the worlds of dance, pop and indie, Retro Stefson’s new found 7-piece line-up create a live show that is truly extraordinary.

Dimitri Kechagias review: Iceland is a beautiful country not only because of its exceptional landscapes but also because Iceland is a great source of EDM talents like Retro Sefson. The beautiful Qween is a mesmerising retro pop track with sparkle and real magic to it. Its one of those track that when is played on radio you stop ironing or hoovering and you actually pay attention on the track. It has that romantic atmosphere that transfer you to other safer places and spaces. The real magic in this release are the fantastic remixes that will help the track to dominate the various charts. First of all the hot duo Kraak & Smaak service a magnificent deep techy chunky version that is hypnotic and marvellous with little electronic melodies here and there and amazing grooves to lock you in its soundscapes. Heckman remix is moving on the same deep tech house sound with some acid funk/garage house influences in it! Close your eyes and you feel the magic happening. Food for mind, body and soul, quality music always wins. Love iT!
